<[BrentNewhall]> Yeah, I'm having a difficult time understanding why Morris Berman makes the statement you quote. In Medieval times, nature was very much ''feared''. The notion of nature as a beautiful, harmonious wonderland only started with the poets of the Enlightenment ("the first tree-huggers," as my college Western Civ professor put it). There was very little sense of "belonging" up to that point.
