In Medieval times, nature was very much ''feared''. The notion of nature as a beautiful, harmonious wonderland only started with the poets of the Enlightenment ("the first tree-huggers," as my college Western Civ professor put it). There was very little sense of "belonging" up to that point. And, of course, this all appears to ignore the East, which has a completely different set of viewpoints.
