  25. <li>@@@864600713 Sheridan's forces have liberated Proxima 3. In the
  26. process, several additional Earth Alliance cruisers defected to his
  27. side. Some are remaining to guard Proxima 3 against retaliation
  28. by President Clark.
  29. <li>@@@864600713 During the Earth-Minbari War, G'Kar personally supervised
  30. the sale of Narn weapons to Earth.
  31. <li>@@@864600713 Londo and G'Kar have agreed to throw the support of their
  32. respective governments behind Sheridan. The nonaligned worlds have
  33. apparently dissolved their mutual defense pacts with Earth and are
  34. staying out of the conflict, aside from loaning ships to help defend
  35. Babylon 5 itself.
  36. <li>@@@864605370 Garibaldi has left the station for Mars, and never intends
  37. to return. He plans to try to help free Earth, but not in concert

  41. <ul>
  42. <li>@@@864667703 What exactly will come of the declaration of support by
  43. Centauri Prime and Narn? Will they provide military support to
  44. Sheridan? Did he know the declaration was coming?
  45. <li>@@@865125941 Does Londo's declaration mean that he has voided the
  46. nonagression treaty between Centauri Prime and Earth
  47. (<a href="044.html">"The Fall of Night?"</a>)
  48. Does the implantation of a Keeper on at least one Centauri official
  49. (<a href="073.html">"Epiphanies"</a>)
  50. spell trouble for Centauri support of Sheridan's cause?
  51. <li>@@@865180478 What was Vir writing when he fell asleep?
  52. <li>@@@866393918 What business did Garibaldi have in Centauri space?

  54. <li>@@@864605370 How does Sheridan hope to use the frozen telepaths?
  55. </ul>
  56. <h2><a name="AN">Analysis</a></h2>
  57. <ul>
  58. <li>@@@864667703 Sheridan told Commander Levitt the League wasn't getting
  59. involved because he wanted this to be a clean fight, presumably
  60. meaning no alien involvement. But in fact, aliens are already
  61. involved; the crew of the White Star fleet is largely Minbari,
  62. and the ships themselves are a Minbari/Vorlon concoction.
  63. <p>
  64. Earth forces being attacked by Minbari-made vessels with Minbari
  65. crews would seem perfect propaganda fodder for Clark, further
  66. "evidence" that Sheridan has gone over to the Minbari side as
  67. suggested in
  68. <a href="074.html">"The Illusion of Truth."</a>
  69. <p>
  70. Of course, it could be argued that many Minbari are part human anyway
  71. (<a href="075.html">"Atonement"</a>)
  72. and thus aren't completely out of place in a human civil war,
  73. but that argument would likely do little to dampen the effect of
  74. Clark's propaganda, should he choose to concoct any.
  75. <p>
  76. <li>@@@865017413 Patriotism and its effects played a key thematic role in
  77. this episode. Sheridan's patriotism (as described when he spoke to
  78. the other captains about the ideals of the Alliance) drove him to
  79. attack his own people. Garibaldi's patriotism, if his conversation
  80. with Vir is to be believed, is strong as well, but Sheridan's
  81. methods are abhorrent to him. Londo's patriotism led him to forsake
  82. his friends, and now he finds himself alone. G'Kar's patriotism
  83. lost him his eye.
  84. <p>
  85. Perhaps even Clark believes he's acting in Earth's best interest,
  86. though that puts him on a collision course with Sheridan.
  87. <p>
  88. <li>@@@865184651 Did Garibaldi tell Edgars about Sheridan's imminent
  89. campaign? If so, Edgars doesn't appear to have relayed the information
  90. to Earth Force, since the commanders at Proxima 3 were unaware Sheridan
  91. was on the move. On the other hand, Garibaldi didn't know the
  92. particulars of the first phase of the campaign.
  93. <p>
  94. <li>@@@865180152 Garibaldi apparently
  95. didn't visit G'Kar to say goodbye (or at least, no such visit was
  96. shown.) Why not, especially given what G'Kar went through while
  97. searching for him?
  98. <p>
  99. <li>@@@865180478 G'Kar is apparently still working on the book he started
  100. while in prison
  101. (<a href="052.html">"Messages from Earth."</a>)
  102. <p>
  103. <li>@@@865798185 When Londo asked about G'Kar's eye, G'Kar responded,
  104. "It sees." His eye is therefore probably not, at present, the "eye
  105. that does not see" from Lady Morella's prophecy
  106. (<a href="053.html">"Point of No Return."</a>)
  107. Was his natural eye in fact the one referred to by the prophecy?
  108. Since it needs to be recharged nightly to continue seeing
  109. (<a href="075.html">"Atonement"</a>)
  110. and since it's not in evidence 17 years in the future, when G'Kar
  111. and Londo kill each other
  112. (<a href="061.html">"War Without End, Part Two"</a>)
  113. the artificial eye may yet turn out to be the one Morella was referring
  114. to.
  115. <p>
  116. <li>@@@865180478 Londo offered a toast to the humans, who he regards as
  117. a bridge between the Centauri and Narn. This echoes Delenn's statements
  118. (<a href="037.html">"And Now For a Word,"</a>
  119. <a href="077.html">"Lines of Communication"</a>)
  120. that humanity's greatest strength is the ability to form communities
  121. of diverse people.
  122. <p>
  123. <li>@@@865016822 The drink Londo referred to while talking to G'Kar was in
  124. <a href="031.html">"The Coming of Shadows,"</a>
  125. bought by G'Kar after he learned the Centauri Emperor had come to
  126. make peace with the Narn.
  127. <p>
  128. Shortly thereafter, Londo did have some inkling that he was losing
  129. his friends thanks to his activities; he offered Garibaldi a drink in
  130. <a href="034.html">"Acts of Sacrifice,"</a>
  131. acknowledging that the two were still "friends, if only for a little
  132. while."
  133. <p>
  134. <li>@@@865533963 Londo's rationale for the joint declaration was nearly
  135. identical to Sheridan's argument for allowing the White Star fleet
  136. to patrol Narn and Centauri space
  137. (<a href="078.html">"Conflicts of Interest."</a>)
  138. However, since Sheridan apparently decided not to publicize the
  139. fact that both the Narn and Centauri had agreed to the patrols
  140. (assuming the Narn agreed -- it's only been explicitly stated that
  141. the Centauri did) this joint declaration is the first official
  142. act of unity that's been shown.
  143. <p>
  144. <li>@@@865180152 Vir's nightmare presumably related to the assassination
  145. of Cartagia
  146. (<a href="071.html">"The Long Night."</a>)
  147. It's odd that he cried out, "I didn't do it," when in fact he did
  148. kill Cartagia, perhaps an indication that part of him still doesn't
  149. believe what he did.
  150. <p>
  151. On the other hand, it's possible he was dreaming of something else,
  152. perhaps one of the precognitive dreams Centauri have. In that case,
  153. one candidate that'd fit his exclamation would be his discovery of
  154. the dead bodies of Londo and G'Kar
  155. (<a href="061.html">"War Without End, Part Two."</a>)
  156. <p>
  157. One other Centauri has been shown awakening from a nightmare recently:
  158. the Regent in
  159. <a href="073.html">"Epiphanies,"</a>
  160. who awoke to discover he had a Keeper attached to his neck.
  161. <p>
  162. <li>@@@864920269 Earth appears to have improved its scanning technology;
  163. White Star ships were hit more than once during the battle. Previously,
  164. Earth weapon systems haven't been able to lock onto Minbari ships (e.g.
  165. <a href="023.html">"Points of Departure."</a>)
  166. Presumably the White Stars, which incorporate much more advanced
  167. Vorlon technology as well, are even harder to get a fix on. Perhaps
  168. the Shadows supplied Earth with some technical tips.
  169. <p>
  170. It's possible manual targeting was used (novel
  171. <a href="/lurk/novels/007.html">"The Shadow Within"</a>)
  172. and the Earth ships simply got in a few lucky shots, but that runs
  173. counter to Sheridan's message to the other captains that he wouldn't
  174. consider them hostile if their weapons didn't lock on. That message
  175. wouldn't make sense if they weren't capable of locking on anyway.
  176. On the other hand, since Sheridan wanted to test the hostility of
  177. the Earth ships, he may have ordered the White Stars to turn off
  178. their countermeasures. In
  179. <a href="023.html">"Points of Departure"</a>
  180. Minbari ships were able to make themselves trackable by the station's
  181. scanners as desired.
  182. <p>
  183. Either way, only one White Star was seen to have been destroyed,
  184. and then only because it smashed into a cruiser seconds after being
  185. hit. Possibly the White Stars are advanced enough that a momentary
  186. loss of control is the only real impact from a single hit by Earth
  187. weapons.
  188. <p>
  189. <li>@@@865277191 While Marcus was gathering information on the hostility of
  190. the Earth cruisers, his contact on Proxima 3 was under attack by ground
  191. forces. What happened to the ground forces after the space battle?
  192. Sheridan appeared to consider the planet liberated once the commander
  193. of the Heracles capitulated; did she have authority over all Earth
  194. forces in the region, or are there still holdouts on the surface?
  195. <p>
  196. <li>@@@865277191 Sheridan promised to liberate Proxima, then take the battle
  197. to Mars and finally to Earth. What about the colony on Orion 7, which
  198. seceded from the Earth Alliance at the same time Proxima 3 did?
  199. (<a href="054.html">"Severed Dreams"</a>)
  200. Perhaps it has already fallen, or maybe it's not under as much duress
  201. as Proxima was, so Sheridan felt the best way to liberate it was to
  202. take back Earth. Or perhaps it's a small colony and Clark didn't
  203. deem it worth the effort to take back.
  204. <p>
  205. <li>@@@865016930 In
  206. <a href="060.html">"War Without End, Part One"</a>
  207. the White Star's Vorlon technology adapted its defenses to shrug off
  208. blasts from Shadow fighters after it was hit. Will the surviving
  209. White Stars from the battle at Proxima 3 now be more resistant to
  210. Earth's weapons, and thus even more potent weapons?
  211. <p>
  212. <li>@@@865708521 Commander Levitt knew that the League worlds had sided
  213. with Sheridan. How did she know, if Babylon 5 is officially cut off
  214. from Earth? The most likely answer is that she'd been watching the
  215. Voice of the Resistance broadcasts, which indicates that they are
  216. indeed reaching the colonies.

  222. has survived and is apparently now patrolling Proxima 3 to guard
  223. against retaliation by Clark's forces.
  224. <li>@@@865016309 The Vesta's logo (visible on the bridge) is a stylized
  225. flame in a brazier. Vesta is the Roman goddess of the hearth.
  226. The Heracles' logo appears to incorporate arrows in the "H" at
  227. the bottom, probably a reference to Heracles' poison arrows from
  228. Greek mythology.
  229. <li>@@@865277191 The ship that withdrew from the battle was the Juno.
  230. In Roman mythology, Juno was the goddess of light and birth. In Greek
  231. mythology she was called Hera.
  232. <li>@@@866783759 The names of two of the ships that surrendered had
  233. symbolic relation to Sheridan's campaign. The Furies were goddesses
  234. who punished crimes against one's kin. Nemesis was the goddess who
  235. punished hubris -- putting oneself above the gods.
  236. <li>@@@865533511 The Pollux was named after Greek mythology as well.
  237. Castor and Pollux, the two main stars of the constellation Gemini,
  238. were brothers. When Pollux was killed, Castor was so despondent that
  239. Zeus agreed to turn them both into stars so they could always be
  240. together.
  241. <li>@@@865533369 Possible continuity glitch: Just before Garibaldi's
  242. arrival, Vir drops his pen while he's asleep. When he stands up,
  243. he's holding the pen again. Of course, he might have picked it

  263. the numbers I perceived in this Ep) should have been able to deal with

  265. <p>
  266. Yeah, if all you want is to slaughter fellow humans and
  267. officers; if you want to try to minimize the body count of your fellow
  268. officers, who you want to eventually side with you, it's more
  269. difficult, you have to keep the kid gloves on...which endangers you in
  270. the long run.
  271. <p>
  272. <li>@@@865446689 "were these White Stars tired or something? I would've
  273. expected that a couple of them could just go slice-slice, sever the

  275. <p>
  276. Sure, if all you're interested in is slaughtering the opposition...they
  277. were designed for "destroy"...when you have to pull your punches to
  278. avoid just going in and killing EVERYthing in sight...which will only
  279. work *against* you in the long run, it becomes more difficult.
  280. <p>
  281. <li>@@@865492857 <em>There were a lot of ethical decisions on all
  282. sides, something you don't usually see in military SF. Were you
  283. in the military?</em><br>
  284. No, I wasn't in the military, just having missed the Vietnam
  285. draft. The points you mention are all the ones I wanted to get into
  286. with that episode, and the ones a lot of folks have overlooked in
  287. suggesting that it should have been an episode about slicing-and-dicing
  288. the enemy (the enemy in this case being our own species). The show, at
  289. root, is about ethics, among other things, and the ethical choices will
  290. continue to get more difficult the deeper you go. There is a very fine
  291. line that Sheridan's walking in all this.
  292. <p>
  293. <li>@@@865492857 It's certainly an issue I care about quite a lot, and the
  294. delicate balance between orders and conscience, between what you think
  295. you should be doing vs. what you feel you *must* do, is the heart of
  296. 99% of all drama.
  297. <p>
  298. <li>@@@865578466 "G'Kar seems to know that it's Mollari at his door -- why
  299. else would he wait so long to call, "Enter?" But how did he know --
  300. was it an official request by Londo?"
  301. <p>
  302. If you recall, when Garibaldi visited Vir, Vir mentioned that
  303. Londo was arranging a meeting with G'Kar, so it was definitely set up
  304. in advance.
  305. <p>
  306. <li>@@@865269464 The Londo/G'Kar stuff was nifty...and yes, he's
  307. struggling toward redemption as best he can, making a real effort, which
  308. is important, because if he's going to end up with a Keeper on him
  309. eventually, as we've seen, best to feel for him, which you can't if
  310. he's a bad guy.
  311. <p>
  312. Set 'em up, knock 'em down....
  313. <p>
  314. <li>@@@865492857 If G'Kar came around too easily or quickly, it would
  315. ring false; it had to go through some time and reflection. But even

  317. G'Kar has to try and overcome that and even transcend it.
  318. </ul>
