  61. Subject: 1. Introduction
  62. The Babylon Project was our last, best hope for peace. It failed.
  63. But, in the Year of the Shadow War, it became something greater:
  64. our last, best hope... for victory. The year is 2260. The place:
  65. Babylon 5.
  66. -- Commander Ivanova
  67. ------------------------------
  68. Subject: 2. The Setting of Babylon 5
  69. A hundred years ago, humanity made contact with its first alien civilization
  70. -- or more to the point, they made contact with us. Before the arrival of
  71. the
  72. Centauri, we were confined to our own solar system, forced to use slow
  73. sleeper
  74. ships to explore the universe. The Centauri gave us the stars, offered us
  75. the
  76. use of their "jumpgates" -- portals into hyperspace -- and later, taught us
  77. to
  78. make our own. In exchange for this and other technologies, they asked only
  79. for trinkets, novelties to sell back home.
  80. In the eighty years that followed, humanity flexed its muscles, expanding
  81. outward at a rapid pace. When a group of less powerful races was attacked
  82. by
  83. an invading army, Earth came to their aid, cementing its role as a major
  84. galactic power, if a young, brash one.
  85. The wave of euphoria came crashing down when humanity made contact with a
  86. mysterious race called the Minbari. The Earth-Minbari War began with a
  87. misunderstanding, a human captain and a Minbari commander too quick on the
  88. trigger. Thanks to bad luck or something darker, our first meeting with the
  89. Minbari resulted in the death of their supreme religious and political
  90. leader.
  91. To the Minbari, what followed was a holy war, vengeance for the murder of
  92. their spiritual leader. Earth was no match for the technologically superior
  93. Minbari, and they easily beat us back to our home planet.
  94. Then, without explanation, as their ships closed in on Earth and wiped out
  95. our
  96. last desperate defenses, the Minbari halted their advance and surrendered.
  97. Only an elite few knew why.
  98. The Babylon Project was conceived in the aftermath of the war. Modeled
  99. after
  100. the United Nations, it would be a meeting place, neutral ground where the
  101. powers could meet and work out their differences peacefully.
  102. The first three Babylon stations were sabotaged in mid-construction. The
  103. fourth was completed, but just as it was about to go online, it vanished
  104. without a trace. The Earth government would have stopped there, but some of
  105. the alien governments, seeing the value of a meeting ground, offered
  106. financial
  107. assistance for the construction of a fifth station. Naturally, there were
  108. strings attached.
  109. Babylon 5 is the story of the last of the Babylon stations, the last hope
  110. for
  111. a galaxy without war. It begins in the year 2257 with the opening of the
  112. Babylon 5 station.
  113. + + + + +
  114. Babylon 5 has failed in its mission. War has erupted, and is quickly
  115. pulling
  116. all the major races in. The station's original mission of peace may have
  117. failed, but it has become something greater: a chance for victory. The
  118. alliances formed are recent, though, and the players may not be ready to win
  119. the war. Meanwhile, the Earth goverment back home seems to have its own
  120. agenda, and will likely not be of any help in the fight against the
  121. darkness.
  122. ------------------------------
  123. Subject: 3. The Major Players
  124. ======== a. The Earth Alliance
  125. The Earth Alliance, headquartered in Geneva, is in charge of the station and
  126. the surrounding space. The corrupt administration of the EA, led by
  127. President
  128. Clark, has connections to the sinister activities of the Psi Corps, a
  129. government agency that tracks and trains human telepaths and increasingly
  130. seems to be running the government rather than serving it. An Orwellian
  131. agency called Night Watch is stifling any signs of dissent, carting people
  132. off
  133. to be reeducated if they don't cooperate. Earth has taken a questionable
  134. stance by allying itself with the expansionist Centauri Empire, hoping to
  135. save
  136. its own skin by allowing the Centauri to roll unhindered over the lesser
  137. races
  138. Earth once saved. Babylon 5's commander, Captain Sheridan, along with a
  139. small
  140. group, is covertly and subtly working to covertly wrestle control away from
  141. the current administration, bolstered by evidence that President Clark was
  142. directly involved in the assassination of his predecessor.
  143. ======== b. The Minbari Federation
  144. An old, highly spiritual race, Minbari are humanoid with exterior bone
  145. crests
  146. on their heads. Once an adversary of Earth, the Minbari Federation has
  147. continued to show interest and friendship with humanity, though how long
  148. that
  149. will remain the case is uncertain. The balance of power in the Minbari
  150. ruling
  151. body, the Grey Council, has shifted in favor of the warrior caste, many of
  152. whom are none too happy about the surrender to Earth twelve years earlier.
  153. (Only the Council and a few outsiders know that the war was ended when the
  154. Council discovered that some humans carry Minbari souls.) The Minbari have
  155. been a major power for well over a millenium, and were instrumental in the
  156. defeat of the Shadows, an ancient enemy, when they last rose up a thousand
  157. years ago; many are now preparing for another confrontation.
  158. ======== c. The Centauri Republic
  159. The Centauri Republic, only months ago a fading empire, is currently on an
  160. expansionist path. A deal with unknown forces enabled Ambassador Londo
  161. Mollari to regain much of their past glory. It seems only a matter of time,
  162. though, before the deal runs its course and the Centauri find out its price.
  163. In terms of appearance, Centauri appear human at first glance, though that's
  164. deceptive. Women shave their heads; men wear their hair in fans, with
  165. length
  166. indicating social standing. The Centauri Emperor is a puppet, completely
  167. under the thumb of several royal houses who have risen to ascendancy with
  168. Londo's help.
  169. ======== d. The Narns
  170. Once a major power, the Narn Regime has been recently conquered in a brutal
  171. assault by the Centauri, especially humiliating since they were unwilling
  172. subjects of the Centauri Republic a hundred years ago and had broken free of
  173. their control. Former ambassador G'Kar, one of the few who knows that the
  174. Centauri aren't working alone, leads a resistance movement from Babylon 5,
  175. but
  176. his chances of reclaiming his homeworld seem slim. Narns have a reptilian
  177. appearance and are easily provoked. The strict new rules imposed by the
  178. Centauri (including the death of the killer's family if any Narn kills any
  179. Centauri) have forced them to move carefully.
  180. ======== e. The Vorlon Empire
  181. Very little is known about the Vorlon Empire. The Vorlons are an ancient
  182. race, the last remaining member of a group of elder races known as the First
  183. Ones who ruled the galaxy millions of years ago. The Vorlons have visited
  184. the
  185. lesser races for eons, possibly manipulating many of them for their own
  186. purposes. The fact that Vorlons appear as holy figures of legend to the few
  187. onlookers who see them outside their encounter suits -- different figures to
  188. different observers, no less -- seems to support that. The Vorlons are
  189. ancient adversaries of the Shadows, and it's to help wage war against them
  190. one
  191. last time that the Vorlons remained behind when most other First Ones went
  192. away. They are able to project images into people's minds, no doubt part of
  193. the reason for their subjective appearance.
  194. ======== f. The Shadows
  195. The Shadows are a dark power, ancient beyond even the Vorlons. They have
  196. fought fierce wars against the First Ones across millions of years. The
  197. last
  198. Great War against the Shadows was ten thousand years ago; after that,
  199. perhaps
  200. thinking the Shadows destroyed, most of the First Ones departed. A thousand
  201. years ago the Shadows rose again, and were defeated by an alliance of the
  202. few
  203. remaining First Ones and others, including the Minbari. Now, with no First
  204. Ones other than the Vorlons to oppose them, their victory seems certain;
  205. what
  206. their ultimate goals are, nobody knows, except perhaps their human
  207. representative, Morden. The Shadows generally choose to make themselves
  208. invisible, though some can sense their presence anyway.
  209. ======== g. The Rangers
  210. The Rangers are an underground "army of light," comprised of Humans and
  211. Minbari, formed to gather information and perform covert operations in the
  212. war
  213. against the Shadows. Organized with the help of Minbari Ambassador Delenn,
  214. Sinclair (former Babylon 5 commander and current Earth ambassador to Minbar)
  215. and Captain Sheridan, the Rangers have pledged their lives to fight the
  216. coming
  217. darkness. Rangers are identified by a pin which depicts elements of human
  218. and
  219. Minbari appearance.
  220. ------------------------------
  221. Subject: 4. The Characters
  222. ======== a. Main Cast (appearing in most episodes throughout the season)
  223. i. Humans
  224. CAPTAIN JOHN SHERIDAN Bruce Boxleitner
  225. The commander of Babylon 5 and representative of the Earth Alliance. One of
  226. the few heroes of the Earth-Minbari War, Sheridan scored Earth's only major
  227. victory of the war, something which has earned him the hatred of the Minbari
  228. warrior caste, though since his appointment he has generally gotten along
  229. with
  230. the Minbari. Working with a General back home, he is involved in a
  231. "consipiracy of light," a covert effort to wrestle control away from the
  232. corruption spreading in EA government. When he found out that the Shadows
  233. were responsible for the loss of his wife Anna, he pledged himself to help
  234. defeat them. Along with Delenn, Sheridan is in charge of the Rangers on
  235. Babylon 5.
  236. COMMANDER SUSAN IVANOVA Claudia Christian
  237. Second in command and in charge of the day-to-day operations, along with
  238. some
  239. ambassadorial duties, on Babylon 5, Ivanova is an ambitious career officer,
  240. hoping one day to command B5 or her own starship. She can be quirky or
  241. pessimistic at times, but she has a dry sense of humor that shows itself in
  242. the rare moments she is able to relax among others. Having poor success in
  243. relationships, most recently in losing Talia, she is not an easy person to
  244. get
  245. to know. Born in St. Petersburg, Russia, and raised abroad on Earth,
  246. Ivanova
  247. is a latent telepath, "not even a P1," but has spent her life hiding her
  248. talent from Psi Corps after their legally-mandated drug treatments drove her
  249. mother to suicide. She is a member of Sheridan's "conspiracy of light."
  250. SECURITY CHIEF MICHAEL ALFREDO GARIBALDI Jerry Doyle
  251. In charge of security on Babylon 5. Though he has a troubled past, bouncing
  252. from position to position and trying to overcome alcoholism, he seems to
  253. have
  254. found his home on Babylon 5. Garibaldi is something of a smart-aleck,
  255. always
  256. ready to crack a joke, but given to bouts of self-doubt and introspection
  257. when
  258. nobody's looking. His natural sense of paranoia wasn't reduced when he was
  259. shot in the back two years ago by his own second-in-command while he was
  260. investigating the death of President Santiago. He is working with Sheridan
  261. in
  262. the fight against the corruption on Earth, and assists in dealings with the
  263. Rangers. His rank is "Chief Warrant Officer."
  264. DR. STEPHEN FRANKLIN Richard Biggs
  265. Dedicated and assured, a specialist in xenobiology (alien biology), and in
  266. charge of Medlab on Babylon 5. His background is mainly in experimental
  267. medicine, so his bedside manner is occasionally not what it should be. His
  268. strong sense of personal morality is at times in conflict with his duties as
  269. the chief medical provider for aliens from hundreds of worlds and cultures,
  270. some of whom view his obligations rather differently. Bordering on the
  271. obsessive, Franklin overworks himself frequently, to the point of abusing
  272. medical stimulants to keep himself going. He is known to operate outside
  273. the
  274. rules when he feel the issue is important: he runs a free clinic in the
  275. Downbelow section for those who cannot afford medical care; he serves on an
  276. "underground railroad" for telepaths who do not want to be found by the Psi
  277. Corps; he is also part of Sheridan's work against the corruption back on
  278. Earth. In his middle thirties now, he spent years hitchhiking through
  279. space,
  280. offering his medical services in exchange for the opportunity to examine new
  281. life forms.
  282. ii. Ambassadors
  283. AMBASSADOR LONDO MOLLARI Peter Jurasik
  284. The representative of the Centauri Republic. Once on an inconsequential
  285. assignment, Londo has become one of his government's most powerful figures
  286. due
  287. to a Faustian bargain struck with new "friends" he knew nothing about, a
  288. deal
  289. that has spun far out of control. With their help, and the help of a few
  290. other ambitious Centauri, his government decimated the once powerful Narn
  291. Regime. Once jovial and indulgent, Londo is now deadly serious as he comes
  292. to
  293. realize what the consequences of his association with the Shadows really
  294. are.
  295. AMBASSADOR DELENN Mira Furlan
  296. Represents the Minbari. Once a member of Minbar's ruling body, the Grey
  297. Council, she lost her position after her controversial decision, following a
  298. prophecy, to undergo a transformation that gave her human characteristics.
  299. Religious, with a strong sense of fate and justice, she believes that she is
  300. the chosen one, who will lead in the upcoming fight against the Shadows.
  301. G'KAR Andreas Katsulas
  302. The ambassador of the Narn Regime when there was a Narn Regime to represent,
  303. G'Kar is now a refugee in exile, wanted by the Centauri Republic. Sheridan
  304. granted him asylum on Babylon 5, which G'Kar is using as a base of
  305. operations
  306. from which to organize a movement to retake his homeworld from the Centauri.
  307. With limited resources, his authority challenged by the other Narn, G'Kar's
  308. position is truly desperate. Ironically, he was among the first to realize
  309. that the Shadows were helping the Centauri, but nobody heeded his warnings.
  310. G'Kar is well-read, deeply spiritual, and extremely intelligent.
  311. AMBASSADOR KOSH NARANEK Ardwight Chamberlain
  312. (translation)
  313. Chris Franke (voice effects)
  314. Jeffrey Willerth (in the suit)
  315. and animatronics
  316. In order to save Sheridan's Life, Kosh finally has shown himself outside of
  317. his encounter suit, which he would wear even in his own methane-filled
  318. quarters when receiving visitors. Kosh is still very much an enigma; to
  319. many
  320. species, he appears as a holy being of light -- an angel, for instance.
  321. Kosh
  322. has taken a great interest in Sheridan, and is attempting to train him for
  323. the
  324. upcoming fight against the Shadows. He communicates through a complex
  325. sequence of musical tones, translated into English by a device on his
  326. encounter suit. When he speaks, his words are few and sound cryptic, but
  327. often have a strange truth to them.
  328. ======== b. Supporting Characters (also in the opening credits)
  329. iii. Ambassador assistants
  330. LENNIER Bill Mumy
  331. Delenn's aide, recently out of a monastery on the Minbari homeworld. He
  332. reveres Delenn as an almost holy figure and accepts her physical
  333. transformation without question. He has pledged his life to her, in fact,
  334. and
  335. is perfectly willing to die by her side. Still something of an innocent
  336. thanks to his isolated upbringing, Lennier has learned some of the art of
  337. diplomacy during his tenure on Babylon 5. First appears in "The Parliament
  338. of
  339. Dreams."
  340. VIR COTTO Stephen Furst
  341. Diplomatic Attache to Ambassador Londo. Vir feels strongly that the choices
  342. Londo has made over the past year and a half are taking the Centauri down a
  343. self-destructive and morally wrong path, and he's getting less and less shy
  344. about expressing that opinion to Londo. He feels somewhat powerless in his
  345. position, close to the major decisions but always on the sidelines. He is
  346. being groomed for career advancement, although that may be just Londo's way
  347. of
  348. getting him out of the way.
  349. iv. Humans
  350. MARCUS COLE Jason Carter
  351. A Ranger permanently stationed on Babylon 5, he oversees the flow of
  352. information from rangers stationed in the area. Often flamboyant and
  353. acerbic,
  354. Marcus has picked up the Minbari language and fighting skills from his
  355. tenure
  356. on Minbar. He has taken a liking to Commander Ivanova, though she's
  357. approaching the relationship with more than a little caution. Unlike many
  358. Humans who felt a calling to become a Ranger, he says he joined their number
  359. only after his brother was killed by Shadows.
  360. ZACK ALLAN Jeff Conaway
  361. Garibaldi's principal lieutenant, Zack is earnest and trustworthy, if not
  362. necessarily the brightest person on the station. He is a member of the
  363. Nightwatch, though he's having second thoughts now that he sees how it's
  364. being
  365. used to persecute and harass innocent people. First appears in "A Spider in
  366. the Web."
  367. ======== c. Recurring and Past Characters
  368. +-----------------------------------+
  369. | This section lists characters |
  370. | that are seen from time to time |
  371. | on Babylon 5. Characters that |
  372. | have appeared in the past, and |
  373. | may have some relevance to the |
  374. | current season, are listed here |
  375. | as well, to provide context. |
  376. +-----------------------------------+
  377. AMBASSADOR JEFFREY DAVID SINCLAIR Michael O'Hare
  378. The commander of Babylon 5 and representative of the Earth Alliance for its
  379. first two years of operation. Officially, he's on the Minbari homeworld as
  380. Earth's ambassador, but his main function is as the head of the Rangers.
  381. Sinclair is of special importance to Delenn, and though she hasn't fully
  382. explained why, it's likely he carries a Minbari soul of some stature. A
  383. glimpse into the future when he was head of Babylon 5 revealed that he will
  384. be
  385. involved in the theft of Babylon 4, and will possibly be witness to the
  386. eventual destruction of Babylon 5 at Garibaldi's hands.
  387. PRESIDENT WILLIAM MORGAN CLARK Gary McGurk
  388. The president of the Earth Alliance, not much of an advocate of Babylon 5's
  389. interests. When President Santiago was killed in an "accidental" explosion,
  390. Clark took office and immediately began his own corrupt agenda. He
  391. personally
  392. assigned Sheridan to his position, unaware of Sheridan's interest in
  393. fighting
  394. the mounting corruption in Earth government. First appears in "Chrysalis."
  395. ALFRED BESTER Walter Koenig
  396. A Psi-Cop, one of an elite unit of the Psi Corps whose function is to track
  397. down rogue telepaths, among other things. Perhaps in part because of his
  398. P12
  399. psi rating -- more than twice as high as Lyta's -- he seems to have risen to
  400. a
  401. position of some importance in the Corps. Bester ruthlessly pursues his
  402. agenda, which most of the time is the same as the Corps'. First appears in
  403. "Mind War."
  404. MORDEN Ed Wasser
  405. A member of the same expedition Sheridan's wife was on, Morden was captured
  406. by
  407. the Shadows and now works for them. He is often accompanied by one or two
  408. of
  409. them, though they're invisible to most people. Never a major player, he is
  410. always ready to talk to Londo and pass messages to and from his
  411. "associates."
  412. Delenn and G'Kar have met him, but only Delenn has any idea who he is.
  413. Morden
  414. is meticulously polite, but nonetheless is a menacing presence who can
  415. casually discuss the deaths of tens of thousands of Narn as easily as most
  416. people talk about the weather. And, it appears that he is involved with the
  417. dark activities going on back on Earth as well. First appears in "Signs and
  418. Portents."
  419. BROTHER THEO Louis Turenne
  420. A Dominican monk, establishing residence on the station to study the
  421. religious
  422. beliefs of alien races. Willing to trade the services of his order for the
  423. ability to stay on the station. First appears in "Convictions."
  424. JACK Macaulay Bruton
  425. He was Garibaldi's seemingly loyal assistant until he shot him in the back
  426. as
  427. soon as Garibaldi discovered a conspiracy to assassinate President Santiago.
  428. Garibaldi identified him as his assailant, but he disappeared while being
  429. transferred to earth for prosecution. Possibly associated with the Psi
  430. Corps.
  431. First appears in "Mind War."
  432. LORD REFA William Forward
  433. A ruthless, unprincipled Centauri noble with whom Londo is cooperating in a
  434. bid for power. Refa and his cohorts are more or less in charge of the
  435. Centauri Republic; the Emperor is simply a figurehead who follows their
  436. lead.
  437. As Londo has grown uncomfortable in his dealings with his mysterious allies,
  438. Refa has taken to dealing with them himself. First appears in "The Geometry
  439. of Shadows."
  440. (Second) LIEUTENANT DAVID CORWIN Joshua Cox
  441. Third in command in C&C, after Sheridan and Ivanova. Corwin is shy but
  442. well-intentioned, a loyal officer. First appears in "Signs and Portents."
  443. LYTA ALEXANDER Patricia Tallman
  444. A former Psi Corps telepath -- the first one assigned to the station, in
  445. fact.
  446. Three years ago she scanned Ambassador Kosh, an experience that left her
  447. forever altered, though she has told nobody the full extent of it. Shortly
  448. thereafter she was recalled to Earth for questioning. Now she's on the run
  449. from the Corps, even working to expose some of its machinations. First
  450. appears in "The Gathering."
  451. DRAAL John Schuck
  452. The steward of the vast machinery below on Epsilon 3. He is a Minbari who
  453. was
  454. looking for a new purpose in life when he heeded the call to become
  455. caretaker
  456. of the planet. He has offered his services in the upcoming Shadow War as
  457. well
  458. as in Sheridan's "consipiracy of light." First appears in "A Voice in the
  459. Wilderness" (part 1).
  460. TALIA WINTERS Andrea Thompson
  461. Operating as Babylon 5's resident telepath for nearly two years, Talia left
  462. the station when her unwilling involvement in a classified Psi Corps
  463. experiment was exposed and changed her forever. Her whereabouts -- or her
  464. fate -- are not known.

  473. After B5's commander, Jeffrey Sinclair, is reassigned, Captain Sheridan
  474. takes
  475. over command of the station, unaware of his fate. G'Kar realizes that there
  476. is a new race lurking in the shadows. Delenn emerges, transformed to be
  477. half
  478. human, though not fully explained. The mystery of the Minbari surrender is
  479. finally revealed: The Minbari discovered that Minbari souls were being
  480. reborn
  481. in humans. The situation on Earth is getting worse; an unknown "Bureau 13"
  482. is
  483. working in the background and the "Night Watch" program is stomping down on
  484. dissidents; meanwhile, Sheridan is part of an underground movement to gain
  485. control back from the corrupted government; he brings his trusted officers
  486. into the fold. On the eve of an historic speech that would have prevented a
  487. Narn-Centauri War, Londo calls upon his unknown agents to attack a major
  488. Narn
  489. colony, starting the war. The mysterious shadows behind the Centauri
  490. brutality are finally revealed to Sheridan; it has been known that this
  491. ancient race has been building up strength; Delenn and Kosh enlist Sheridan
  492. to
  493. help in the upcoming war against the shadows. The Centauri, with the aid of
  494. the shadows, end the war with the Narn decisively by bombing the Narn home-
  495. world "into the stone ages." The Centauri soon begin annexing other worlds,
  496. Kosh has finally revealed himself, and a shadow has been caught on camera.
  497. The Great War is begun.
