  20. _________________________________________________________________
  21. Backplot
  22. * In the old days of the Centauri Republic, poison was a common
  23. political tool.
  24. * Some humans learned the Minbari language from POWs during the war.
  25. * The rebirth ceremony in [21]"The Parliament of Dreams" was just a
  26. small part of a much larger renewal ceremony, traditionally
  27. performed in response to, or in anticipation of, a great change.
  28. Lennier believes B5's inhabitants are currently between two such
  29. changes.
  30. * The Minbari prophecy foretells fire and darkness after the two
  31. halves of the Minbari soul unite to combat the ancient enemy.
  32. Unanswered Questions
  33. * How many more Nightwatch members are still on the station?
  34. * Did Garibaldi's people get rid of the artificial intelligence?
  35. * What else is buried in B5's computer system? (At least one
  36. unfriendly thing, as shown in [22]"A Spider In the Web.")
  37. * Who does Lennier believe Delenn is fated for? Sheridan? If so, is
  38. that due to his observation of the growing relationship between
  39. Delenn and Sheridan, or due to something in the prophecy?
  40. * What was Delenn planning to give up and to tell someone at the
  41. ceremony?
  42. Analysis
  43. * Londo is playing a dangerous game with Refa; Refa will no doubt
  44. not take kindly to having his life threatened, and may retaliate
  45. against Londo either overtly or behind the scenes. Refa seems to
  46. have much of the royal court in his pocket while Londo's influence
  47. has waned since he broke off his association with Morden. Londo
  48. may find that he's bitten off more than he can chew.
  49. * However, the extent of the risk he's taking is a good indication
  50. that his realization of the dark nature of his former pact with
  51. Morden is complete; after this it will be very hard to turn back.
  52. It's interesting to note, though, that his basic goal hasn't
  53. changed, only his methods; note that he tries to dissuade Refa by
  54. talking about how dangerous the current Centauri policies are to
  55. their people. Londo is still first and foremost a patriot, not
  56. unlike G'Kar (at least until Kosh's revelation in [23]"Dust to
  57. Dust.")
  58. * Londo and Sinclair have something in common; Londo's poisoning of
  59. Refa bears a passing resemblance to Sinclair planting a
  60. transmitter in G'Kar's intestinal tract. Or rather, claiming to --
  61. which raises the question, did Londo _really_ poison Refa, or just
  62. say so? Like Sinclair, Londo might figure that the poison that
  63. doesn't exist can't be flushed out by doctors.
  64. * How did the Nightwatch get so much information about the Minbari,
  65. especially the details of Delenn's means of getting the war
  66. cruisers to Babylon 5? It may be as simple as Earth's normal
  67. intelligence channels, which, under Clark, presumably make at
  68. least some of their findings available to the Nightwatch.
  69. * Boggs' claim that the Minbari "think [Delenn]'s the second
  70. coming!" indicates that many among the Minbari agree with Delenn's
  71. assessment of herself as the chosen one, the vehicle of prophecy
  72. (see also [24]"Comes the Inquisitor.") Marcus also hints at this
  73. when he tells Delenn that his brother believed in the Rangers and
  74. in her; apparently her involvement with them is richer in
  75. symbolism than has previously been hinted at. How, and whether,
  76. that relates to the nature of Sinclair's involvement remains to be
  77. seen.
  78. * This isn't the first time Delenn has been referred to as "the
  79. second coming," at least indirectly. G'Kar quoted a passage from
  80. the Yeats poem of the same name in [25]"Revelations," a passage
  81. visually accompanied by Delenn's first look at her new appearance.
  82. Ominously, _that_ Second Coming refers to the Antichrist.
  83. * The Army of Light is now dressed in black uniforms. Whether that's
  84. an intentional contrast on Delenn's part, or simply her fashion
  85. sense, only time will tell.
  86. Notes
  87. * The voice of Sparky the Computer, the artificial intelligence, is
  88. Harlan Ellison. Sparky's name is visible both in the ending
  89. credits and, very briefly, as the last line item in the computer's
  90. status messages when it reboots.
  91. * The recording Londo shows Refa is slightly wrong; Morden was
  92. sitting when he mentioned Refa's name ([26]"Matters of Honor.")
  93. * The station logo on the wall in C&C has changed. It used to be a 5
  94. with a pair of olive branches overlaid, presumably signifying
  95. peace; now it's a 5 over a sword. The new logo can also be seen on
  96. the top of the conference room table in the scene with Delenn and
  97. the officers from the Minbari ships.
  98. * There's a minor continuity glitch involving the new logo. When the
  99. command staff walks into C&C in the final scene, the camera pans
  100. across the side of C&C to show the startled techs. The new logo is
  101. visible on the wall between two computer displays. But in the next
  102. shot of the same wall, there's no logo there.
  103. * "Dem Bones" was also sung in the final episode of "The Prisoner."
  104. * The formation in which one of the Starfuries peels away as the
  105. squadron performs a fly-by of the caskets is called the Missing
  106. Man formation. It is used today whenever a flyby is part of
  107. military honors at a funeral.
  108. * As Delenn and Marcus wait for Lenann, a "Wet Floor" sign can be
  109. seen in a corridor in the background.
  110. * Sheridan's closing line, "Babylon 5 is open for business," echoes
  111. Laurel Takashima's in [27]"The Gathering." In both cases it marked
  112. a new beginning for the station.
  113. * Sheridan's line to Ivanova, "My hypocrisy only goes so far," is a
  114. Mark Twain quote.
  115. * Don Stroud got his scar by jumping into a crowd of men with knives
  116. to stop a woman from being raped, according to former story editor
  117. Larry DiTillio.
  118. * The eulogy recited by Sheridan is the same one spoken by Ivanova
  119. in [28]"Soul Hunter."
  120. jms speaks
  121. * As it happens, episodes 8, 9 and 10 ("Messages," "Point of No
  122. Return," and "Severed Dreams") are kind of a triptych, linked at
  123. the hip and designed to pull together/blow out several major
  124. hanging plot threads once and for all, and send the show spinning
  125. off in an entirely different direction. The hardest one to write
  126. was 10, because it's a very emotional episode for the characters,
  127. and for me.
  128. And next is #11, which I begin to write this weekend...and #11,
  129. year three, is the *exact* midpoint of the 5 year story. This is
  130. the hump, the dead center of the journey. It took so long to get
  131. here, and suddenly we're halfway finished.
  132. * The episode is in the halfway mark, and that IS its significance,
  133. because it signals a major change.
  134. When we were midway through that episode, the halfway mark of the
  135. whole series, John, Doug and I were given these spiffy leather
  136. script books with silver inlaid initials by the crew, to
  137. commemmorate the event. It was really nifty.
  138. * _About Delenn and Lennier_
  139. As for Lennier...it's an unusual relationship, which you'll learn
  140. a LOT more about in "Ceremonies of Light and Dark." Which is all I
  141. can say for now.
  142. * I was kind of afraid that after the big Stuff Blowing Up Episode,
  143. anything afterward would be a let down because it couldn't have
  144. the same level of huge action (without killing everyone making the
  145. show). So the way to deal with that is to go in an entirely
  146. different direction; I was hoping that'd work, and glad that so
  147. far it has.
  148. * Earthgov sees B5 in much the way China now sees Taiwan. (Though on
  149. reflection that may not be the best metaphor....)
  150. * You only send an ambassador if you recognize something as
  151. legitimate, and EA will never recognize an independent B5.
  152. * _Why didn't G'Kar join in the ceremony?_
  153. Because he saw the actual co-running of security, and their
  154. duties, more important...that is physical, and concrete, and he
  155. feels is his surest way to win a seat in the new council. Actions,
  156. not ceremonies. He's very direct that way. (Which is pretty much
  157. what he said at the time.)
  158. * _Was this the same ceremony as in [29]"The Parliament of Dreams?"_
  159. Yes, it's the same ceremony; Delenn states as much in the episode.
  160. * _Was this one of Londo's chances for redemption?_
  161. No, this wasn't an opportunity for redemption. It would be flagged
  162. as much more important than this.
  163. * I don't think Londo feels he needs to be redeemed; his reasons as
  164. stated were quite sincere.
  165. * _Is Delenn being "destined for another" part of the prophecy?_
  166. It is now.
  167. * Certainly various sorts of love was at the core of the episode,
  168. and what we do for one another.
  169. But no, not all relationships have to end badly (despite my own
  170. general history in that regard).
  171. * _Is Lennier really satisfied with Delenn's destiny lying
  172. elsewhere?_
  173. Well, there was certainly that little catch in his voice, that
  174. hesitation, before he added "...in my heart."
  175. * "...note on Lennier: "a pure, higher love"? Pshaw, I've heard that
  176. before and seen the results in my own life. Are Minbari so
  177. different?"
  178. One would certainly hope so.
  179. And there are such different kinds of feelings even among humans;
  180. yes, you're right, often it doesn't work out that way...and
  181. sometimes it does.
  182. * I didn't see or intend any element of Lennier being racist; but
  183. there are definitely differences in culture and physiology between
  184. Minbari and humans. Minbari are very careful about personal space,
  185. and they don't like to be talked to a certain way. Marcus
  186. momentarily forgot himself, and acted inappropriately. Lennier
  187. corrected him.
  188. * _Delenn, Lenann, Lennier. What does "len" mean?_
  189. Basically, I went through and came up with common suffixes and
  190. prefixes for Minbari names, the way Russian names have
  191. combinations of certain letters (-ovna, -ova, -vich), and
  192. associated various backgrounds and castes and houses (fanes) to
  193. them. So you have Delenn, Rathenn, and others of similar name.
  194. * _About the slow buildup of the Delenn/Sheridan relationship_
  195. What you say about relationships is quite true. The slow process
  196. of getting to know somebody, the courtship, the parries and feints
  197. and false starts are 85% of the fun. It's the process of getting
  198. into somebody's mind, discovering who they are. And that's what
  199. these two are doing. It's an awful lot of fun.
  200. * The "romance angles" aren't "late additions," but you don't just
  201. leap into a romance right off. You couldn't have had the
  202. Delenn/Sheridan thing right in the beginning of year two, it had
  203. to be built, and grow gradually. Things are introduced as it is
  204. time for them to be introduced. The shadows weren't even named
  205. until season two, and didn't make their first appearance until
  206. late in season one. Is that a late addition?
  207. * I'm doing a lot to deepen up Marcus and Lennier, to let people see
  208. parts of them we might not have seen before. Everyone grows on the
  209. show; even at this point, compare Lennier to the wide-eyed
  210. innocent who first arrived at the station and couldn't even bring
  211. himself to look Delenn in the eyes.
  212. The computer voice, Sparky, wasn't really a nod of any kind to
  213. Hitchhiker's. (And 2001's HAL beat them to the punch a long time
  214. before that in any event.) No, I just figured, if the computer
  215. system had a glitch, what would it sound like? Answer...Harlan.
  216. * Actually, we had 3 more quickie scenes with the computer voice,
  217. but the ep ran long over time, and we were locked into some
  218. walk-and-talks where we couldn't make other trims.
  219. * _Is the name Sparky a reference to anything?_
  220. No, just figured it'd be a great name.
  221. * I also like the look between Marcus and Delenn as they stand in
  222. the customs area...he looks like he desperately wants to say more,
  223. and she like she desperately wants to hear it...but he turns and
  224. walks away, the moment lost.
  225. * _About female fans' reaction to Marcus_
  226. It's okay...so are most of the women who work in the editing bays
  227. at B5. The first few days of this season, as his stuff started
  228. coming in, one of them pulled me aside, and with hand firmly on my
  229. arm, to let me know she meant business, said, "Listen very
  230. carefully: I want to see a LOT more of Marcus."
  231. * _Was Marcus' beard different before?_
  232. Your memory is correct. Just before he did the first episode, he
  233. had to shave his full beard for some commercial audition. It
  234. hadn't grown all the way back, and we had to darken it down a bit
  235. to make it work. It's all back now.
  236. * _The Nightwatch members looked a lot more sinister than in the
  237. past. _
  238. I went just a little here for a kind of metaphorical approach;
  239. prior to this, Nightwatch folks have always been presented as
  240. starched, scrubbed, visually appealing...the face they wanted
  241. others to see. Now we see their true face, the scarred, dark,
  242. empty eyes, no longer pretending to hide. So we kinda cast in that
  243. direction.
  244. * _Boggs' scar wouldn't have moved like it did._
  245. The physical dynamics of the scar *would* have worked as seen,
  246. actually, mainly because that wasn't a piece of makeup, that's a
  247. real scar, and it does work that way.
  248. * The scar is real. He had some rough times a few years ago.
  249. (Actually, he also appeared with the scar as it's seen here in
  250. "TKO," as Garibaldi's corner man, though there it was hidden a
  251. bit.) He's still doing a lot of work though.
  252. (The funny thing was seeing the occasional comment on the nets
  253. saying how fake they thought the makeup looked, and why couldn't
  254. we manage to do something a bit more realistic looking?)
  255. * Actually, no, the song in "Ceremonies" was not intended as a
  256. Prisoner riff or homage of any kind. If the song originated with
  257. The Prisoner, that'd be one thing, but the song goes back a long,
  258. LONG ways before The Prisoner was even thought of.
  259. What happened, actually, was this...I'm a big fan of the Red Clay
  260. Ramblers, a terrific group that does sort of bluegrass but very
  261. offbeat. I was writing that episode, and I was playing with the
  262. torture aspect, and had one of their albums on. At just the moment
  263. I got to that scene, up came their rendition of "Ezekiel in the
  264. Valley of the Dry Bones." The notion was perfect, so I went back
  265. to the original version of the song, which is public domain
  266. (rather than their variation on it), and used it. Synchronicity.
  267. * _About the uniforms_
  268. I wanted it to have a crossed look, certain Minbari elements and
  269. textures, lines that are reminiscent of the Rangers, but also of
  270. Earthforce. Hence, the result.
  271. * There's a certain perverseness in making those on the side of
  272. light wear black uniforms. It reverses our expectations.
  273. * In general, it's my understanding that the cast really like the
  274. new uniforms. They're lighter, easier to move around in, cooler
  275. under the lights, and they like the styling, the rogue element to
  276. it, and the Minbari aspect.
  277. * _Couldn't Refa just have all his food and drink tested?_
  278. Of course the flip side of this is that you'd have to check every
  279. single thing you ate or drank every day, every week, for the rest
  280. of your natural life. Not the kind of life *I'd* like to live.
