  18. Watch For:
  19. * A man shouts at Garibaldi and Sinclair; what he says might provide
  20. clues about the nature of the opponents in another scene.
  21. * Look closely at what's inside a transparent case given to Delenn.
  22. It's an object that's been shown in a previous episode.
  23. _________________________________________________________________
  24. Backplot
  25. * Babylon 4 was stolen by people from the future, apparently at
  26. Sinclair's behest during that time period, to act as a base of
  27. operations in a tremendous war being fought between the forces of
  28. light and darkness.
  29. * Sinclair will be a great leader, possibly _the_ leader, of the
  30. forces of light in that war.
  31. * At some point, long before he participates in Babylon 4's
  32. disappearance, Sinclair will flee a place (most likely Babylon 5,
  33. cf. [20]"Signs and Portents") that is about to be overrun by some
  34. evil creatures. Garibaldi will stay behind to fight, but will
  35. force Sinclair to leave. A [21]transcript of the scene in question
  36. is available.
  37. * The Grey Council stopped the war because of a prophecy. Valen (a
  38. revered figure, see [22]jms speaks) said that humans, or some
  39. among them, had a destiny with which the Minbari could not be
  40. allowed to interfere.
  41. * Delenn is on Babylon 5 to study humanity, to determine whether the
  42. prophecy is correct.
  43. Unanswered Questions
  44. * Will Babylon 4 appear again? If so, when?
  45. * Was it really Sinclair in the suit? If not, who or what was it?
  46. * What was Sinclair trying to prevent from happening?
  47. * Who was waiting for Delenn and Sinclair?
  48. * Will Delenn keep her position on the council?
  49. * What is the purpose of the triluminary?
  50. * What was happening in Sinclair's flashforward? Who or what was
  51. attacking the station? Is it related to the destruction of the
  52. station as foretold in [23]"Signs and Portents?"
  53. * What was the crazed man referring to when he shouted about
  54. "monsters" and said, "I see you... you think I can't?" (see
  55. [24]Analysis)
  56. * Is the Grey Council's cruiser the same place Sinclair was taken
  57. during the Battle of the Line? (cf. [25]"And the Sky Full of
  58. Stars")
  59. * Why is Delenn so convinced she must remain on Babylon 5, even at
  60. the risk of her standing in the Council?
  61. * What "change" does Delenn believe is coming?
  62. Analysis
  63. * None of the races have demonstrated an ability to travel through
  64. time. Yet within Sinclair's lifetime, such technology will either
  65. be developed, discovered, or introduced by people from the distant
  66. past or future. Does it exist already? If so, who has it? Zathras'
  67. people may be the ones to provide the technology.
  68. * The voice that speaks to Sinclair sounds like Delenn's, but her
  69. face is intentionally not shown. Presumably there is a reason for
  70. that; Delenn may be due to change in some way that will alter her
  71. appearance.
  72. * After Babylon 4 completes its time jump, a voice (presumably a
  73. computer) announces that the atmosphere was breathable. Why wasn't
  74. it breathable before? Zathras clearly had no trouble breathing in
  75. the past, so is something about the future Sinclair different that
  76. prevents him from breathing a normal atmosphere?
  77. * In the past, when we've seen Grey Council members, they have had
  78. silver triangles on their foreheads ([26]"And the Sky Full of
  79. Stars" and [27]"Signs and Portents" during Morden's visit to
  80. Delenn.) Yet no such triangles were visible this time. What do the
  81. triangles mean, and what causes them to appear? (see [28]jms
  82. speaks)
  83. * The attacking force in Sinclair's vision of the future seemed to
  84. be invisible. Witness the fact that Garibaldi's men were firing in
  85. seemingly random directions, as if they didn't know where the
  86. enemy was. It also seems unlikely that they'd use a flamethrower
  87. if they could aim at their opponents. When the unknown force
  88. finally cut through the wall, it was forced inward, but nothing
  89. could be seen forcing it. This also explains what the crazed man
  90. on B4 was talking about; he'd seen visions of a battle against
  91. invisible foes too.
  92. The only instance of invisibility seen in the series up until this
  93. episode was in [29]"The War Prayer," and it was developed by the
  94. Earth Alliance military, suggesting perhaps that the attackers
  95. might be humans.
  96. * Garibaldi flashed back to an event two years earlier. That may
  97. suggest that Sinclair's flashforward (if indeed that's what it
  98. was) was to two years in the future, which would put the scene
  99. somewhere in the year 2260, season three of the series.
  100. Notes
  101. * Babylon 4 is larger than Babylon 5.
  102. jms speaks
  103. * The one I'm most looking forward to writing just now, though, is
  104. "Babylon Squared," in which we finally show what happened to
  105. Babylon 4, and in the process ask more questions than we answer
  106. (though at least we DO answer the questions we asked about the
  107. fate of that station in general...you'll know what happened to it,
  108. just not yet what it means). The end of this episode will cause
  109. more speculation and consternation and astonishment than anything
  110. you've seen on TV in a long, long, very long time.
  111. * What a weird day...filming "Babylon Squared," and one minute I'm
  112. standing in the anteroom/hallway of a Minbari cruiser that leads
  113. into the Great Hall and the chambers of the Grey Council...a few
  114. minutes later I'm standing in a section of Babylon 4, and the
  115. whole atmosphere of the crew is *very* different, the whole
  116. sensibility is strange... very strange.
  117. "Babylon Squared" has a *very* different look to it, and a very
  118. eerie and foreboding feel about it, which I like a lot. Jim
  119. Johnston, who directed "Soul Hunter" and several others is doing
  120. it. Very moody.
  121. * Yesterday, I got the final air-check versions of "Babylon Squared"
  122. and "Chrysalis" to QC before delivering them to PTEN. Watched both
  123. of them three times in the same day. They're just stunning.
  124. Probably the two best episodes of the entire season.
  125. * Yes, you will see the Major Conflict that leads to the situation
  126. with Babylon 4. We're building toward a massive conflagration
  127. here.
  128. * Yes, you will definitely, at some point, see the flip side of the
  129. B2 episode.
  130. * No, actually, B2 was structured for maximum jarring effect, thus
  131. the sudden cuts back and forth, the sickly green light in
  132. B4...makes the person watching feel unexplainably anxious, which
  133. was a subliminal but definite intent. So no, nothing much was cut.
  134. And yes, eventually we will see the flip-side of the B4 story.
  135. * In B-squared, we saw the present events in the vanishment of B4;
  136. in a future episode, we'll actually see our characters make the
  137. decision to go back in time and yank B4 forward, what went wrong,
  138. and so on.
  139. * _The One's suit was very similar to the suits in "2001."_
  140. Re: the suit...that wasn't an intentional 2001 nod...we went to
  141. Modern Props to get a space suit for Babylon Squared, and the only
  142. one they had on hand that would work for us was one left-over from
  143. 2010, which I asked the folks in costume to change as much as
  144. possible...though it was pretty much what it was regardless. So
  145. that one wasn't intentional.
  146. * Nope; Zathras is one of his race, which aren't offspring of any
  147. other two groups.
  148. * When Zathras shows up in time, it'll definitely be recognizeable
  149. as Zathras.
  150. * B5 is smaller than B4 because they sunk most of their budget into
  151. B4; on B5 they had to get outside funding, and scrimped.
  152. * B1-B4 were located in roughly the same sector, with B4 using some
  153. of the materials from 1-3 leftover. B5 was constructed about 3
  154. hours (traveling time in real-space) from the location of B4.
  155. * No commander had yet been assigned to Babylon 4. One Major Krantz
  156. had been assigned to oversee the final stages of construction, and
  157. was on board -- along with about 1300 others in the construction
  158. crew -- when the station vanished. The station had only been on-
  159. line 24 hours, and the discussions of a commanding officer had
  160. just begun when it disappeared.
  161. * Major Krantz wasn't so much in charge of B4 as he was (as noted in
  162. dialogue) assigned to oversee the final stages of construction.
  163. His job was to get the station finished, then turn it over to
  164. someone else to run.
  165. * Why no triangles on the Council's heads?
  166. While the triangle is one element of the Grey Council symbology,
  167. it is not present and visible at all times and under all
  168. circumstances; it has a particular purpose or meaning.
  169. * The triangle only manifests itself for specific reasons, at
  170. specific times, neither of which were appropriate to that moment.
  171. And yes, the Triluminary is much cooler...and does something quite
  172. interesting.
  173. * Valen was the one who brought Minbari civilization together, he is
  174. their Christ-figure. And yes, the heavyset Grey Council member is
  175. the same one as in "Sky."
  176. * _Does the Grey Council live permanently on that ship?_
  177. They stay on the cruiser almost entirely during their tenure in
  178. the council, only leaving for personal family crisis/situations
  179. and the like.
  180. * Garibaldi's closing lines in Sinclair's flashforward are
  181. reminiscent of "Aliens."
  182. When you're shooting a show, invariably you get to the stage and
  183. find that you have, for instance, three lines, one per character
  184. in the room...and you're trying to get them out the door, and it
  185. moves better if you give one line to one character and the other
  186. two to the other character. That sometimes happens. But rarely. In
  187. the Garibaldi's yell case, it was written as a quick shot, he
  188. yells and we're out. The director wanted to extend the shot a bit,
  189. visually. I wasn't in the studio at the time, so Jerry improvised
  190. a series of yells.
  191. This sort of thing is *extremely* rare on the show; the actors and
  192. directors know they *cannot* change dialogue on the set without
  193. approval from me or Larry. On any given script, no more than about
  194. 3-6 lines get modified for staging purposes once we get to the
  195. set. And always with approval required. This is an absolute, hard
  196. and fast rule. The only reason the Garibaldi thing happened is
  197. that they figured it was just a yell, so nothing could get messed
  198. up story-wise (which is the primary reason this is so strict;
  199. change one word in a line and it could screw up plot points three
  200. episodes down the road) by having him yell a few specific lines.
  201. If I'd been there for that scene, I would've written him something
  202. a little less reminiscent of "Aliens."
  203. * The script called for Garibaldi to take up the Big Massive Gun and
  204. fire, with a primal YELL that went on forever. Any dialogue at
  205. that point which replaced the yell came from the actor. The
  206. "you're already dead" was only relevant to the scene, not T2.
  207. * Re: Garibaldi in the flash-forward scene...no, it wasn't any kind
  208. of "homage" to Aliens. (And for the most part, I try and stay
  209. clear of any kind of homage unless it's primarily a throwaway; I
  210. want my story to be MY story, not a bunch of homages.)
  211. The single most moving kind of story for me is the "last man on
  212. the bridge"...the last defender who has to hold the line while
  213. others get away, knowing he will probably not survive it. This has
  214. great power for me, and for many others, which is why it shows up
  215. again and again in films, literature, TV and other venues. The
  216. Garibaldi scene has NOTHING to do with Aliens, and everything to
  217. do with that figure.
  218. Re: *why* it is that humans are special...has nothing to do with
  219. sacrifice, or dedication (well, that's not quite true, it has
  220. something to do with it), but that's not the totality of it.
  221. There's one more element you don't know about yet, that won't be
  222. revealed until season two, episode one, "Points of Departure."
  223. Once you see that episode, you'll fully understand that there is
  224. one very particular thing about humans that is very special
  225. indeed.
  226. * I kinda *have* to play fair with the story; if you hear Delenn's
  227. voice, then you can be sure it's Delenn.
  228. In one form or another.
  229. * "So who IS the One? Some of the evidence points to Sinclair, but
  230. other bits seem to indicate Delenn. Yet neither seems to fit all
  231. the facts above."
  232. Exactly.
  233. What you have here in your message are two pieces of the puzzle.
  234. You're confounded by the fact that somehow they don't quite seem
  235. to fit into one another. That's because there's one last piece
  236. missing in this part of the picture, which fits in between them.
  237. The intent is to put this piece into clear view in year three,
  238. probably between episodes 8 and 11 approximately. At that point,
  239. the question of the One will be fully answered.
  240. * Re: Sinclair as the One...funny how all this time very few folks
  241. have really commented much on how it was that Zathras could look
  242. right into Sinclair's face and say, "NOT the One."
  243. * _Garibaldi's eyes glow for one frame in the flashforward scene._
  244. (sigh) Our rotoscope EFX guy was waiting for a bunch of PPG EFX to
  245. finish rendering in that battle scene, and was bored, and like
  246. many such EFX types, filled in the eyes of Garibaldi with weird
  247. stuff while waiting around. When the other scene finished
  248. rendering, he got out, believing that he had not saved that one
  249. frame. Unknowingly, he had.
  250. Nobody caught it until after broadcast.
  251. We talked.
  252. * "It has been divulged that Sinclair is coexisting in a parallel
  253. dimension Babylon 4."
  254. Actually, this has *not* been divulged...what it is is a
  255. speculation based on an offhand comment by Michael at a
  256. convention. I jump in here only because, well, that ain't it. B4
  257. is not in an alternate dimension, neither is there an alternate
  258. Sinclair. Just a course correction to the discussion.
  259. * With only one exception, you won't see time travel anywhere in the
  260. five-year run of the B5 story.
  261. * _Which do you do first?_
  262. Fasten, button.
  263. Levi's Jeans forever!
  264. * _Why wasn't Franklin delivering the autopsy report?_
  265. Garibaldi is head of security, and Franklin would likely give him
  266. the report, which Garibaldi then relays. In such things there is a
  267. chain of command. And as you say, it seemed pointless to bring in
  268. the actor just for one half-page scene.
  269. * _Credits for two Gray Council members?_
  270. Mark Henrickson was the...rounder of the two Minbari. The one with
  271. the staff wanted to go uncredited.
  272. No real reason, he just felt it would be better for the character
  273. to remain mysterious; and since it really wasn't a big part, it
  274. wouldn't make a real difference one way or another in his credits
  275. and resume. (I know that sounds weird, but as near as I can
  276. determine, that's the reason. He did a great job, and we're
  277. looking forward to having him again.)
  278. * Does the triluminary have anything to do with the sculpture in
  279. Delenn's quarters?
  280. Yes, the Triluminary does have a function in the device she's been
  281. making.
