  20. Backplot
  21. * The Grey Council ordered the surrender at the Battle of the Line.
  22. * Many among the Minbari warrior caste do not approve of the
  23. surrender, a fact which has caused something of a rift between the
  24. religious and warrior caste.
  25. * Caste membership is determined by heritage. Membership in the
  26. religious caste takes precedence if one parent is in the religious
  27. caste and the other is a warrior. (This is ambiguous; Delenn's
  28. statement on the matter could be interpreted to mean that the
  29. mother's caste takes precedence over the father's.)
  30. * The Earth-Minbari War began with the death of Dukhat, the head of
  31. the Grey Council at the time.
  32. * The war was regarded as a holy war among the Minbari, and had the
  33. full support of the religious caste at least part of the time.
  34. * One of the warleaders (heads of the military clans?) committed
  35. suicide rather than obey the order to surrender.
  36. * Telepaths are highly regarded among the Minbari, and are fed and
  37. clothed by people in exchange for providing their services.
  38. * The Narn keep alien slaves, or at least are reported to do so.
  39. Unanswered Questions
  40. * What is the significance of the word "chrysalis?" Note that this
  41. is the title of the first-season finale.
  42. * How was Delenn able to sense that she was being probed?
  43. Analysis
  44. * Delenn's identity doesn't seem to be a secret among the warrior
  45. caste, or at least its upper echelons. The warriors seem to be
  46. playing along and keeping her secret safe.
  47. * As JMS mentions below, in the original airing order, this episode
  48. came after [18]"Babylon Squared." If that is the intended
  49. chronological order of the two episodes, then Delenn's statement
  50. to Neroon that she speaks for the entire Grey Council takes on
  51. different connotations; it is plausible in that case that she is
  52. lying and hadn't even consulted the Council.
  53. * Likewise, the device used to stun the guard appears to be a
  54. triluminary; its presence makes much more sense if this episode is
  55. after [19]"Babylon Squared." Its exact function is still a
  56. mystery; did it in fact stun the guard, put him in some sort of
  57. stasis, or something else?
  58. Notes
  59. * The only first season script that was developed outside the B5
  60. offices.
  61. jms speaks
  62. * Originally, this ep was to be broadcast later in the run, because
  63. I didn't want two PsiCorps episodes back-to-back, and for one
  64. little detail that will become clearer after "Babylon Squared"
  65. airs; it would've been better to have followed that episode, but
  66. again, these eps are made to be watched in just about any order,
  67. so it's okay in the long run.
  68. * Yeah, the audio thing with Talia is something I thought of during
  69. the final audio mix. We wanted to convey somehow her trying to get
  70. through and initially it was just distortion. Then I figured, wait
  71. a second, she is going to be thinking what she's going to say
  72. before she says it, why not pre-lap the dialogue? Unfortunately,
  73. for some damned reason, the high-tech studio wasn't set up to do
  74. that effect, so we took Talia's dialogue, digitized it, laid it in
  75. on a second side track, and played the one over the other, one
  76. preceding the other by I think about 20 frames or so. The key was
  77. to make the *second* voicing the one synched to her lips, not the
  78. first one. Worked out pretty cool.
  79. * You will see some of the warrior caste in "Legacies," coming up in
  80. July. You don't see them much because they only go where they're
  81. needed.
  82. * Generally, the religious caste takes precedence over the warrior
  83. caste.
  84. * From cradle to grave, the Minbari are taught that there is no
  85. greater goal, no nobler thing than to serve. They are raised to be
  86. totally self-sacrificing. The only exception is when someone in
  87. the religious caste believes he or she has received a calling,
  88. which if sincerely felt cannot be contravened (since usually this
  89. too involves serving). So for a Minbari telepath, this is their
  90. means by which they may serve, and they are given great respect.
  91. It never even occurs to them to do otherwise.
  92. Lately, there has been a bit of a change brewing; "a
  93. self-involvement above the needs of others" (as someone notes in
  94. "Voice") that has begun creeping into the Minbari race. And
  95. they're not happy about it.
  96. * Overall, I'd say that "Legacies" came out better than "War
  97. Prayer," because Dorothy had more time to get to know the
  98. characters, and because it was better directed. (As a
  99. parenthetical, Larry DiTillio has developed some of his own
  100. scripts as well, specifically "TKO" and "Eyes." "Legacies" is the
  101. one I'd say was developed "outside the office" in the sense of
  102. being a freelance effort. Everything else was either an assigned
  103. premise or done in-house by staff.)
  104. * Stuff like wearing gloves is only enforced if you're a member of
  105. Psi Corps; Allysa wasn't. In addition, though she had P10
  106. *potential*, the talent was sporadic, came and went.
  107. * Regarding "Legacies," there's one brief blip in there that we're
  108. going to see again; I'm not sure I'd call it a clue, but certainly
  109. a cue...a hint of something to come. You won't have to wonder what
  110. it is; it'll be shown in a flashback in that particular yet-to-air
  111. episode.
