[http://bhg.fws.gov/Literature/BillDebuys.htm An good essay]:
:These days we are well aware of our obligation to take care of certain elements within specific ecosystems. In the forest, it may be the spotted owl or the Jemez Mountain salamander. But taking care of individual species is not so easy. What we have learned over the years is that, in managing ecosystems, attempts to maximize individual variables in those complex, multi-variant systems tend to cause the system to falter or crash. It doesn't matter really what that variable is. It might be board feet of lumber. It might be animal unit months of grazing. It might be spotted owls. The bottom line is that if you are pushing for just one variable, you will place the entire system at risk and you are going to get in trouble.
