<[[caeb]]> i like. the ending particularly.

speaking of bugs, did mom tell you about the long-tailed megarhyssa we found? freakiest fucking thing. none of us had ever seen anything like it before.

<[[caeb]]> i mean, we saw it doing this: http://www.whatsthatbug.com/ichneumons.html

<[[Brennen]]> We have those! I had no idea what they were called, but I've come across a couple of them doing that freaky eggifying-the-wood thing. I have some fuzzy pictures somewhere.

Interesting that the young prey on wood-boring insects. I had assumed that the young ''were'' wood-boring insects.

<[[caeb]]> yeah, i watched it for like an hour and took all these not-terribly-distinct shots, kind of at a distance because it looked like it might be capable of, you know, killing me. then mom came and caught it, identified it, found out it ate her enemies, and let it go again on a stump.

i feel kind of bad in retrospect--she was laying eggs on future firewood.

<[[caeb]]> (that is to say, the bug, not mom, was laying eggs...)
|
|
|

<[[Brennen]]> The first one I found was laying eggs on future firewood too, except I'm not sure I ever burned it, because it was too big for the stove and kind of crappy. I wonder if they're attracted to certain kinds of wood.

Does mom still have that yellow Kansas insect book?

<[[caeb]]> that's the book she found our friend in. i think it did say they liked certain trees, but i can't remember; will let you know.
