Google did eventually [http://p1k3.com/2007/9/29 do something about this], to their credit.

<[Stephen]> That really sucks. You've inspired me to not leave my email all in gmail.

<[Brennen]> FWIW, I think you can download it all over POP, at least once.

<[Stephen]> Yeah you can, and multiple times too. But the last time I switched computers I just never bothered.

<[Brennen]> Until now, I've been pretty happy trusting Gmail - because I'd be perfectly happy to never spend another unpaid hour mucking around with a mailserver, and because Google's scale means they're better at dealing with the brokenness of e-mail (by which I mean spam) than I am ever going to be, and because it's kind of like mutt-in-a-browser.

But trust where you've got anything to lose is risky, so I'm thinking about ways around this - and wishing I could spend a couple hundred bucks on a redundant backup system right now.

<[Stephen]> Don't you have a oodles of space on Dreamhost?
|
|
|
|
<[Brennen]> More than I'm every likely to use, at least in theory - and it wouldn't be a bad idea to throw a mirror-to-Dreamhost component into a backup system. My experience so far hasn't indicated that they're terrifically reliable, though.

I think I might see what it'd cost to backup about 30 gigs to a service like Amazon's S3, until I can afford some decent hardware of my own...

Not reliable in what way? Network connection? Data loss? I've been using them for a couple of years now and haven't had any problems. If the problem is the network connection then at least the data will be there when you can get access to it. If the problem is data loss, then !

<[Brennen]> I haven't had any data loss yet, though I had some issues early on with losing access to files. I just haven't felt like their uptime is indicative of overall reliability - for quite a while I could be sure that some or all of my sites hosted with them would be down for at least a couple hours out of a given day. It seems to have improved in the last couple of months.

From what I can tell, your experience with Dreamhost is going to depend heavily on the server you're on and other random factors. Given the cost...
