WareLogging, [Notebook]. A MoleskineNotebook clone, down to color coding on the packaging. [Borders] has 'em. They are way cheap. $4.99 for a medium, same size as the Moleskine large which go for $15-19 or so ca. October 2008.
* [http://piccadillyinc.com/products_notebooks.php official site] - I'm pretty darned sure the top image there is actually a Moleskine notebook.

Manufacture differs a bit. Squarer, stiffer binding, different ribbon material, less substantial back pocket (appears to be the same paper as the pages), slightly narrower elastic. Paper is maybe a bit rougher. Haven't tried it with many writing implements yet. Generally a little rougher around the edges than recent Moleskines. Not sure how it'll hold up to use. All that said, I wouldn't be surprised if this was coming off a line that had produced official Moleskine-branded books at some point. There's nothing subtle about the intent here whatever.
<[Saalon]> Would you recommend it despite the slight differences, or are they enough to make it a less attractive buy?
<[Brennen]> I haven't used it enough yet to say whether it's really an acceptable replacement, but I think they're cheap enough to be worth checking out if you find one in the area (if you check out a Borders, they probably won't be near the Moleskine display or the regular notebooks - look around for a discount section). I mean, the pocket size I used to carry everywhere is $4. I paid that for a beer last night.
I've got some concerns about, you know, the high probability that people are making $0.04 an hour or whatever to put these things together, but I suspect that the same concerns apply to the Moleskine-branded stuff.
