I would add to your point something like, Christ, can we knock it off with violence against women as convenient-yet-easily-dismissed plot point? Not that this hasn't been said before, a lot. But come on, aren't people at least bored by now?

This is probably why I like older movies so much. Obviously they're messed up, but I can view their social failures from a bit more distance, even when they're still agonizingly relevant.
