Ryokan was a 19th century Japanese Zen monk and, unless you take his word for it, poet.

DavidJamesDuncan writes about him in an essay titled "Who owns the West: Seven wrong answers", or something close to that. In translation at least, his words are simple and clear, and he sounds, perhaps, like the kind of person one would be better off for knowing.
