IRC is an acronym for InternetRelayChat, a client/server protocol for reasonably simple text chat. While not the earliest form of realtime chat on the 'net, and certainly not the predominant form in a world rife with instant messaging systems, it may nevertheless represent the purest and most usefully feature-rich chat protocol.
There are great numbers of IRC clients available for most operating systems, in part because writing an IRC client appears to have at various times been a rite of passage for a certain breed of programmer, and in part because very few of these clients are actually much good (and no one can seem to agree for long on which few).
While dissent is welcome, the present editors of this wiki believe [http://www.mirc.co.uk/ mIRC], the dominant client on the Windows platform, to be the Reigning (and Largely Unchallenged) King of All IRC Clients, and indeed perhaps one of the few truly ''complete'' pieces of software ever written.
