It may have fallen by the wayside in the age of Google define:whatever searches and Wikipedia, but dict is still one of my favorite tools.

On Debian-based systems, do:

 sudo apt-get install dict

Then you can do nifty things like

 dict -s soundex word

Where -s specifies a matching strategy, and can include things like Knuth's SOUNDEX algorithm and regular expressions.
