Heaping abuse on BASIC was practically a professional requirement for academic computer scientists for decades. On the other hand, it's pretty much the only IDE I've ever liked, and for years it was the only readily available language/interpreter that I was aware of on the DOS / Windows 3.x PCs I was stuck with as a kid.
