I come squarely down on Brennen's side with this, a friendship (a true friendship anyway) is something to be cherished and treasured, not cheapened with banal formalities. If there is something to say or discuss that's one thing, but constant contact is not required. If such communications are your only contact then the friendship is over, or at least on hiatus.
