  50. <h1>The Earth-Minbari War and the Battle of the Line</h1>
  51. <h3>Originally written by J. Michael Straczynski on GEnie</h3>
  52. <p>
  53. The Earth/Minbari war began as a misunderstanding. The first time a
  54. Terran ship encountered a Minbari starship, they studied each other closely.
  55. The Minbari ship made a move that they thought would be considered non-
  56. threatening. It wasn't. Even in the present of our story, no one is quite
  57. sure who fired first. The Minbari ship was greater in power, but taken by
  58. surprise, was destroyed, and the Earth ship limped back to base with tales of
  59. a terrible new enemy. Minbari ships, arriving to investigate, were
  60. interpreted to be the first wing of an invasion force by the base commander,
  61. and ships were launched in response before receiving formal authorization from
  62. Earth Central.
  63. <p>
  64. The war put a great strain on the Minbari, who have always been strongly
  65. divided between the religious caste, and the military caste, who were now
  66. forced to work together. The religious caste were quietly opposed to the war,
  67. but were generally vague about their reasons when asked.
  68. <p>
  69. The war went badly for Earth, with one loss after another; the Minbari had
  70. an overwhelming technological advantage. During the entire course of the war,
  71. Earth scored only one major victory, when a young officer named
  72. John Sheridan destroyed the Minbari war cruiser Black Star and
  73. several accompanying vessels. It was all downhill from there.
  74. <p>
  75. <h2><a name="line">The Battle of the Line</a></h2>
  76. The climax of the war was the Battle of the Line. Earth had all but lost
  77. the war. In a last-ditch attempt to save Homeworld, every available ship left
  78. in the armada was positioned around Earth itself. It was, everyone knew, a
  79. suicide mission. And that's, indeed, how the Battle of the Line started out
  80. to be.
  81. <p>
  82. <img src="/lurk/gif/008/line1.gif" align=middle> The Battle of the Line, from
  83. <a href="/lurk/guide/008.html">"And the Sky Full of Stars"</a>.
  84. <p>
  85. In the course of that battle, a lone ship -- a one-man fighter with very
  86. little in the way of armaments -- took several heavy hits. His instruments
  87. failing, other ships blowing up all around him, he aimed his ship at the
  88. nearest Minbari cruiser, deciding to ram it in the hopes of destroying at
  89. least that one ship. He kept his ship on course for as long as he could hold
  90. out. Then, abruptly, he blacked out.
  91. <p>
  92. When he awoke, he was still in his ship. Drifting. He fired up the
  93. engines, ready to continue, only to discover two things: first, that he had
  94. been out of it for a full 24 hours.
  95. <p>
  96. Second...the war was over.
  97. <p>
  98. <img align=right width=140 height=136 alt="" src="/lurk/gif/line_medal.gif">
  99. And, incredibly, the Minbari had surrendered. On the very verge of
  100. success in the war, they had rolled over and sued for peace. No one in the
  101. Earth Alliance quite knew why, but they weren't about to debate the issue, and
  102. accepted minimal compensation for the war.
  103. <p>
  104. Now, ten years later, the Earth Alliance is no closer to figuring out why
  105. the Minbari surrendered. It is, in fact, one of the great puzzles of that
  106. era, debated on a hundred different worlds. Only a few strange clues have
  107. slipped out. One is that the military genius who led the Minbari into the war
  108. committed suicide the day of the surrender, though it is unclear if his death
  109. took place before or after the surrender. And the rift between the military
  110. and religious castes apparently came to some sort of climax, with the
  111. religious caste taking complete control. There are rumors of some sort of
  112. religious vision, of a prophecy of great things, and a prophecy of complete
  113. doom. But since almost nothing is known of Minbari religion, what this might
  114. be, no one knows.
  115. <p>
  116. <img align=right width=80 height=100 alt="" src="/lurk/gif/chars/sinclair.gif">
  117. At the conclusion of the war, those Terrans who fought in the Battle of
  118. the Line were proclaimed heroes. One of these men was Jeffrey
  119. Sinclair...the pilot who still cannot account for the 24 hours he was out of
  120. contact with Earth Central. (cf.
  121. <a href="/lurk/guide/008.html">"And the Sky Full of Stars"</a>)
  122. <p>
  123. Commander Jeffrey Sinclair has come far in the 10 years since the war.
  124. He's had some rough times, but overall he's progressed. And he has at last
  125. been given a major assignment, perhaps the most important job of his life,
  126. concomitant with his promotion to Commander.
