  56. The Babylon Project was our last, best hope for peace. It failed.
  57. <p>
  58. But, in the Year of the Shadow War, it became something greater: our last,
  59. best hope... for victory. The year is 2260. The place: Babylon 5.
  60. </cite> - Commander Ivanova
  61. </blockquote>
  62. <p>
  63. Babylon 5 has failed in its mission. War has erupted, and is quickly pulling
  64. all the major races in.
  65. <p>
  66. <img align=right width=80 height=100 alt="" src="/lurk/gif/chars/sheridan.gif">
  67. The <strong>Earth Alliance</strong>
  68. is in charge of the station and the surrounding space. The corrupt
  69. administration of the EA, led by President Clark, has connections to the
  70. sinister activities of the
  71. <strong>Psi Corps,</strong> a government agency that tracks and trains
  72. human telepaths and increasingly seems to be running the government rather
  73. than serving it. An Orwellian agency called <strong>Night Watch</strong> is
  74. stifling any signs of dissent, carting people off to be reeducated if they
  75. don't cooperate. Earth has taken a questionable stance
  76. by allying itself with the expansionist Centauri Empire, hoping to save its
  77. own skin by allowing the Centauri to roll unhindered over the lesser races
  78. Earth once saved. Babylon 5's commander, Captain Sheridan (pictured here,)
  79. along with a small group, is working to covertly wrestle control away from the
  80. current administration, bolstered by evidence that President Clark was
  81. directly involved in the assassination of his predecessor.
  82. <br clear>
  83. <p>
  84. <img align=right width=80 height=100 alt="" src="/lurk/gif/chars/londo.gif">
  85. The <strong>Centauri Republic</strong>, only months ago a fading empire,
  86. is currently on an expansionist path.
  87. A deal with unknown forces enabled Ambassador Londo Mollari (pictured) to
  88. regain some of their past glory. It seems only a matter of time, though,
  89. before the deal runs its course and the Centauri find out its price.
  90. In terms of appearance, Centauri appear human at first glance, though that's
  91. deceptive. Women shave their heads; men wear their hair in fans, with length
  92. indicating social standing. The Centauri Emperor is a puppet, completely under
  93. the thumb of several royal houses who have risen to ascendancy with Londo's
  94. help.
  95. <br clear>
  96. <p>
  97. <img align=right width=80 height=100 alt="" src="/lurk/gif/chars/gkar.gif">
  98. Once a major power, the <strong>Narn Regime</strong> has been recently
  99. conquered in a brutal assault by the Centauri, especially humiliating since
  100. they were unwilling
  101. subjects of the Centauri Republic of old. Former ambassador G'Kar, one of
  102. the few who knows that the Centauri aren't working alone, leads a
  103. resistance movement from Babylon 5, but his chances of reclaiming his
  104. homeworld seem slim. Narns have a reptilian appearance and are easily
  105. provoked. The strict new rules imposed by the Centauri (including
  106. the death of the killer's family if any Narn kills any Centauri) have forced
  107. them to move carefully.
  108. <br clear>
  109. <p>
  110. <img align=right width=80 height=100 alt="" src="/lurk/gif/chars/lennier.gif">
  111. Once an adversary of Earth, the <strong>Minbari Federation</strong> has
  112. continued to show interest and friendship with humanity,
  113. though how long that will
  114. remain the case is uncertain. The balance of power in the Minbari ruling body,
  115. the Grey Council, has shifted in favor of the warrior caste, many of whom
  116. are none too happy about the surrender to Earth twelve years earlier. (Only
  117. the Council and a few outsiders know that the war was ended when the Council
  118. discovered that some humans carry Minbari souls.) The Minbari have been a
  119. major power for well over a millenium, and were instrumental in the defeat of
  120. the Shadows when they last rose up a thousand years ago.
  121. <br clear>
  122. <p>
  123. <img align=right width=80 height=100 alt="" src="/lurk/gif/chars/kosh.gif">
  124. Very little is known about the <strong>Vorlon Empire</strong>. The Vorlons
  125. are an ancient race, the last remaining member of a group of elder races known
  126. as the First Ones who ruled the galaxy millions of years ago. The Vorlons
  127. have visited the lesser races for eons, possibly manipulating many of them
  128. for their own purposes.
  129. The fact that Vorlons appear as holy figures of legend to the few onlookers
  130. who see them outside their encounter suits -- different figures to different
  131. observers, no less -- seems to support that. The Vorlons are
  132. ancient adversaries of the Shadows, and it's to help wage war against them
  133. one last time that the Vorlons remained behind when the other First Ones
  134. went away. They are able to project images into people's minds, no doubt
  135. part of the reason for their subjective appearance.
  136. <br clear>
  137. <p>
  138. <img align=right width=80 height=100 alt="" src="/lurk/gif/chars/morden.gif">
  139. The <strong>Shadows</strong> are a dark power, ancient beyond even the Vorlons.
  140. They have fought fierce wars against the First Ones across millions of years.
  141. The last Great War against the Shadows was ten thousand years ago; after that,
  142. perhaps thinking the Shadows destroyed, most of the First Ones departed. A
  143. thousand years ago the Shadows rose again, and were defeated by an alliance
  144. of the few remaining First Ones and others, including the Minbari. Now, with
  145. no First Ones other than the Vorlons to oppose them, their victory seems
  146. certain; what their ultimate goals are, nobody knows, except perhaps their
  147. human representative, Morden (pictured.) The Shadows generally choose to
  148. make themselves invisible, though some can sense their presence anyway.
  149. <br clear>
  150. <p>
  151. <!--img align=right width=80 height=100 alt="" src="/lurk/gif/chars/ranger.gif"-->
  152. The <strong>Rangers</strong> are an underground "army of light" formed to
  153. gather information and perform covert operations in the war against the
  154. Shadows. Organized with the help of Delenn, Sinclair
  155. (former Babylon 5 commander and current Earth ambassador to Minbar) and
  156. Sheridan, the Rangers have pledged their lives to fight the coming
  157. darkness. Rangers are identified by a pin which depicts elements of human
  158. and Minbari appearance.
  159. <br clear>
  160. <p>
  161. Babylon 5's original mission of peace may have failed, but it has become
  162. something greater: a chance for victory. The alliances formed against the
  163. Shadows are recent, though, and the players may not be ready to win the war.
  164. Meanwhile, the Earth goverment back home seems to have its own
  165. agenda, and will likely not be of any help in the fight against the darkness.
