  1. <h3>Synopsis by Arturo Magidin (magidin@matem.unam.mx)</h3>
  2. <p>
  3. <i>"It was the middle of the Earth year 2260," recalls Sheridan. "The
  4. Year Between Wars, and the beginning of a new age. The Shadow War was
  5. over, but there was still a darkness waiting for us back
  6. home. President Santiago had been assassinated, and his successor,
  7. president Clark, was turning Earth into a prison camp. We'd broken
  8. away from Earth, and in retaliation they had quarantined us, trying to
  9. strangle our supply lines. We were desperate, and we couldn't afford
  10. to lose even a single supply ship. In the midst of all of this, we
  11. made contact with Thirdspace, and we almost didn't survive it... I
  12. only hope we never come across it again. Because the next time, no one
  13. is going to survive it."</i>
  14. <P>
  15. A supply ship is under attack by raiders, and the raiders are under
  16. attack by Starfuries, led by Ivanova. Ivanova tells the raider leader
  17. that their forces are too evenly matched, and it will be at best a
  18. stalemate. But the ship carries Quantium 40, too rich a prize for the
  19. raiders to ignore. So they call in their heavy cruiser, which
  20. functions as their base. And then, Ivanova springs her mouse trap:
  21. Sheridan, in command of several White Star ships, arrives and takes
  22. care of the cruiser. Hopelessly outnumbered and outgunned, the
  23. raiders surrender. Sheridan takes the prisoners to a Drazi freeport,
  24. and Ivanova takes the wing of Starfuries back to B5. She'll spread the
  25. news; hopefully, if raiders believe any shipment could be a trap, they
  26. will think twice before attacking.
  27. <P>
  28. Back on B5, Lyta Alexander is mediating a private dispute, but she
  29. keeps getting flashes of a ship or artifact in hyperspace. It
  30. discomforts her greatly, and quickly excuses herself. Meanwhile, in
  31. hyperspace, Ivanova's wing detects something lost there,
  32. adrift. They make a lifeline of Starfuries to reach it before it drifts away
  33. and is lost (<a href="../guide/026.html">"A Distant Star"</a>).
  34. It is a huge construct, of unknown origin. Ivanova requests Babylon 5
  35. send White Stars and all available starfuries to tow the enormous find
  36. back to the station.
  37. <P>
  38. As the artifact passes through the gate, Lyta has a vision: the Zocalo
  39. in ruins, bodies everywhere, herself hurt and bleeding, and a strange
  40. shadow stalking her...
  41. <P>
  42. Later, Vir talks with Sheridan and Delenn. Londo is away on Centauri
  43. Prime, and the League has asked him to talk on their behalf. The
  44. League want access to the artifact, and the possible advanced
  45. technologies it represents. But Sheridan is wary of having everyone
  46. poking at the artifact, pulling in all directions at once. He promises
  47. they will share anything they find with the League. Vir does not think
  48. the League will be satisfied with promises, but agrees to relay
  49. Sheridan's answer to them.
  50. <P>
  51. But as Delenn points out, Babylon 5 is not equipped to handle
  52. research of such proportions. "So it will take us a little longer,"
  53. answers Sheridan possessively.
  54. <P>
  55. A maintenance bot is sent to take a surface sample from the artifact,
  56. but its energy is drained, and strange markings of some kind shine
  57. briefly on the artifact's surface. And in her quarters, Lyta is
  58. furiously scribbling on the walls "There is danger. Remember." over and
  59. over again...
  60. <P>
  61. Soon after, a ship from InterPlanetary Expeditions (IPX) arrives and
  62. requests a meeting with Sheridan. The leader of the expedition is
  63. Dr. Elizabeth Trent. Despite the Earth embargo on B5, IPX would like
  64. access to the artifact. Because of its line of work, IPX maintains
  65. contacts with other worlds and outside of Earth-controlled space, and
  66. Earthgov turns a blind eye towards them for business' sake. Dr. Trent
  67. points out that B5 is not set up to investigate the find, and it
  68. could even be dangerous to be poking around blindly. Sheridan agrees
  69. to given them access, provided IPX meets some conditions: they are to
  70. keep him and the station informed at all times, and give them full
  71. access to their finds; he also wants first shot at any new
  72. technologies found; and anything that could be used by Earth against
  73. the other races will not leave B5; Sheridan is willing to destroy the
  74. artifact if necessary to prevent such information from
  75. leaving. Finally, since IPX can come and go as they please, they will
  76. bring needed supplies and foodstuffs to the station. "If you're
  77. going to work here," explains Sheridan, "you are going to have to
  78. bring lunch. I just want to make sure you bring enough for everybody."
  79. <P>
  80. Dr. Trent wants to think about it, but just then Ivanova links in:
  81. their tests suggest the artifact is at least a million years old. This
  82. is more than enough for Trent, who agrees to the deal Sheridan
  83. proposed.
  84. <P>
  85. In her quarters, Lyta is dreaming of the artifact. In her dream, it is
  86. covered in some sort of writing. She wakes up and leaves. As she is
  87. going up on a lift, she is joined by Zack. She, however, is still lost
  88. in her visions, mouthing the words "there is danger, remember" over
  89. and over. The lift stops suddenly: the station has been
  90. experiencing power fluctuations for the past couple of hours. Zack,
  91. meanwhile, uses the pause to ask Lyta out; he is taken aback by her
  92. silence and detachment, thinking it is rejection. He eventually backs
  93. off, and requests that the whole conversation be forgotten.
  94. <P>
  95. Later, as more work continues around the artifact, dozens of maintbots
  96. accelerate towards it on a collision course. They are destroyed by
  97. starfuries before they impact, and when security breaks into
  98. Maintenance, they find Lyta standing over the unconscious bodies of
  99. the personnel. "We have to stop it, we have to stop it," she says, and
  100. falls to the ground unconscious. Later, she tells Dr. Franklin she
  101. cannot remember anything since the previous evening. Although
  102. Dr. Trent wants her in custody, Sheridan refuses. He will treat this
  103. as an isolated incident.
  104. <P>
  105. The preparations around the artifact are complete, and the IPX team
  106. begins deep magnetic scans on the artifact. They figure it is not a
  107. ship, but rather some sort of mechanism. Dr. Trent even has some ideas
  108. about what it is...
  109. <P>
  110. In the Zocalo, a man starts dreaming of a city in space, with a spire
  111. in the middle, and dark tentacles reaching for him. He awakes
  112. screaming. All over the station, similar events are occurring: fights
  113. are breaking out, people are locking themselves up in their rooms,
  114. screaming...
  115. <P>
  116. In Downbelow, Deuce (<a href="../guide/015.html">"Grail"</a>) is
  117. looking up; he is seeing the same city, and mutters to himself "It is
  118. beautiful." Ivanova also dreams of the city, and even sees Vir
  119. there. A dark tentacle reaches over from behind her, and she wakes up
  120. screaming.
  121. <P>
  122. In the morning, Bill Marishi, the second in command of the IPX group,
  123. is working over breakfast. Suddenly, he is surrounded by silent people
  124. who are staring at him intently. Among them is Deuce, who tells him
  125. IPX isn't moving fast enough. "You have to move faster," he tells
  126. Marishi. "You have to make it work."
  127. <P>
  128. Despite her progress, Dr. Trent has not shared her findings with
  129. Sheridan, and he is getting suspicious. Although he is not a
  130. xenoarchaelogist, from his years with Anna he knows they should be
  131. further along than Dr. Trent is letting on. But Dr. Trent claims the
  132. situation is unique and calls for slow progress. Sheridan then notices
  133. some of her notes, and recognizes that the writing on the surface of
  134. the artifact is Vorlon. Dr. Trent should know that, and moreover
  135. should have shared the information. Sheridan gives her 48 hours to get
  136. a report to him, otherwise he'll pull the plug.
  137. <P>
  138. Faced with the deadline, Trent tries to push up the schedule. She
  139. wants to crack the artifact's technology before anyone else takes it
  140. away from her. But Marishi disagrees, and since he is second in
  141. command his agreement is needed. So she reveals what she knows: the
  142. way Dr. Trent figures it, the artifact will open a gateway to another
  143. space, different from both normal and hyper; she calls it
  144. "thirdspace." As far as she can tell, it operates under a whole
  145. different set of rules: a ship traveling through thirdspace would be
  146. able to travel almost instantanously between points that would take
  147. days or weeks through hyperspace; the technological, and more
  148. importantly the military, potential is enormous. Although cautious,
  149. Marishi agrees to go ahead and try to turn the artifact on, and open a
  150. gateway to thirdspace.
  151. <P>
  152. In a lift, Ivanova meets Vir. Since it is considered good luck among
  153. Centauri, Vir mentions he saw her in his dreams last night. Soon,
  154. Ivanova realizes it was the same dream she had, and that this is
  155. connected to the strange happenings all around the station, and to the
  156. artifact itself. She rushes to tell Sheridan about it.
  157. <P>
  158. But Trent has put her plans in action. The work crew plugs in a power
  159. cell to the artifact, which springs to life.
  160. <P>
  161. People start converging on the observation dome, the Zocalo, and the
  162. cobra bays, entranced by the artifact. Some are trying to stop the
  163. starfuries from launching. When Zack tries to clear them out, fights
  164. erupt. The artifact is now draining power from the whole station. Zack
  165. links in to Sheridan: fights are breaking out everywhere, and people
  166. seem to be under some kind of telepathic influence or trance; he won't
  167. fire on them, which makes things that much harder. Some starfuries
  168. launch and start firing at the artifact from a distance, but the
  169. artifact seems to be protected by an energy shield now. Slowly, the
  170. artifact begins to open...
  171. <P>
  172. Sheridan goes to see Lyta, and is met by Delenn. They find Lyta
  173. taken over by a presence, an "echo of what was." The presence explains
  174. what the artifact is: thousands of years ago, the Vorlons, believing
  175. themselves to be just short of godhood, constructed the artifact as a
  176. gate to heaven. In their arrogance they didn't stop to consider the
  177. consequences and dangers. On the other side, they found a powerful
  178. race bent on the destruction of all other life in that universe. With
  179. the gate open, they came into our universe to do the same. Strong
  180. telepaths, they even managed to take over some Vorlons. The Vorlons
  181. managed to fight them back and close the gate, but before the artifact
  182. could be destroyed, those who had been taken over flung it into
  183. hyperspace. Now the door is opening again, and the artifact must be
  184. destroyed. For the aliens to come through, the door must be open on
  185. both sides, so this will suffice. The presence imparts to Sheridan the
  186. knowledge needed to destroy the artifact.
  187. <P>
  188. Outside, the gate is opening and small ships are coming through. They
  189. easily take care of the few starfuries that have launched...
  190. <P>
  191. Inside, Sheridan is ready to go ahead. Delenn will get some Minbari
  192. heavy cruisers, and Sheridan has a mission of his own. Ivanova goes to
  193. see Trent, and finds Bill Marishi dead, shot from the back: Dr. Trent
  194. has been taken over as well. Before she can strike again,
  195. Ivanova disarms her and knocks her unconscious. She then
  196. leaves to lead the arriving White Stars, as more alien fighters come
  197. through the gate.
  198. <P>
  199. The alien fighters are very powerful and tough, and even the White
  200. Stars and the Minbari cruisers are having trouble holding their
  201. own. Meanwhile, Sheridan goes to the armory and takes a tactical nuke,
  202. before going out on a powered spacesuit. The defending fleet
  203. concentrates its fire on the front of the artifact, opening up a hole
  204. in the defensive shield on the back. Sheridan slips through it to the
  205. inside of the artifact.
  206. <P>
  207. As the fights rage on outside and inside the station, Sheridan places
  208. the tactical nuke in the center of the artifact. He arms it, and on
  209. his way out he finds his way blocked by creatures which look like
  210. those in Ivanova's and Lyta's visions. He manages to escape them
  211. barely, as a giant alien ship starts coming through the gate. Before
  212. it can emerge, however, the bomb goes off, destroying the artifact and
  213. the alien ship.
  214. <P>
  215. The combined defenders slowly and painfully destroy the remaining
  216. alien fighters, as the people inside Babylon 5 slowly awaken from their
  217. telepathic takeover. The station, and the universe, have survived.
  218. <P>
  219. Later, Dr. Trent is apologizing for her behavior, not all of which
  220. was telepathically induced. She acknowledges she was wrong and will
  221. take a leave of absence to take stock of her life. "I didn't like the
  222. part of me that thing brought out," she tells Sheridan. She also gives
  223. him all the information she found about the artifact. It may prove
  224. useful, some day.
  225. <P>
  226. <i>"I was sure she didn't give me all the information," remembers
  227. Sheridan. "She just wanted out of there. And if a little lie got her
  228. out the door, that was fine with her. Fine with both of us,
  229. really. Because as Mr. Garibaldi has been known to say from time to
  230. time, `we all lie.' When the dust settled and people wanted
  231. explanations, we gave them one. We said that the device was a weapon,
  232. a mouse trap, which was true. We told them that it used a telepathic
  233. trigger and caused an outbreak of fighting, and we told them that it
  234. was finally destroyed. It's all true.
  235. <P>
  236. "And of course, it's all a lie. Because there are times we don't need
  237. the whole truth. The Vorlons made an error thousands of years ago, and
  238. we paid the price for it today. Why encourage any one else to do the
  239. same? No, we have more than enough troubles of our own, we don't need
  240. to inherit anyone else's mistakes. We got through it alive, and
  241. everyone's okay, and that's the important thing. And this isn't the
  242. kind of problem that's likely to ever happen again."</i><P>
  243. In the Observation Deck, Lyta is staring sadly at the stars, saying to
  244. herself: "One mistake. One mistake out of so many, so many others..."
