  1. <h3>Synopsis by Arturo Magidin (magidin@matem.unam.mx)</h3>
  2. <i>Garibaldi: "The Interstellar Alliance, based on the homeworld of
  3. the Minbari Federation, was founded in the Earth year 2261, shortly
  4. after the end of the Shadow War, twenty years ago. Twenty years of
  5. history. Those of us who have survived have seen it all. And those of
  6. us who understand, have been waiting, and dreading, the arrival of
  7. this day..."</i>
  8. <P>
  9. Sheridan is dreaming: he dreams about Lorien reviving him on Z'ha'dum
  10. (<a href="../guide/068.html">"Whatever Happened to
  11. Mr. Garibaldi?"</a>); and Lorien explaining that he will live for at
  12. most twenty years after his fall in Z'ha'dum (<a
  13. href="../guide/070.html">"Falling Toward Apotheosis"</a>). He
  14. wakes with a start, and begins to get up. Delenn wakes up and asks him
  15. where he is going, and he replies he only wants to get some air.
  16. <P>
  17. He dresses in the robes of Ranger One, and walks to a balcony, to
  18. await the comng of the day. Delenn joins him; she didn't go back to
  19. sleep, and wanted to see what Sheridan was up to. They sit together,
  20. and Sheridan explains he wanted to see the sun come up; he has never
  21. done it since he got to Minbar, and wants to carry the picture
  22. of it in his head.
  23. <P>
  24. "You had the dream again," says Delenn, more observation than
  25. question. It is the third night in a row, and both of them know what
  26. it means. It's been twenty years since Sheridan died on Z'ha'dum, and
  27. he is almost out of time. "Do you want me to send the messages?"
  28. Delenn asks. "Yes. Send them," he replies. The sun starts coming up,
  29. and they both watch the sunrise, embracing in silence.
  30. <P>
  31. On Earth, General Susan Ivanova's secretary is letting her know her
  32. schedule: nothing important, really... Ivanova is clearly tired of the
  33. whole thing. "I feel like an old war horse," she says, "trotted out
  34. after a parade so all the kids can point at it."
  35. <P>
  36. Suddenly, a Ranger bursts into the office. A security guard is thrown
  37. to the floor, and the captain of the guard follows apologizing for the
  38. intrusion. The Ranger insisted, but the captain didn't think it appropriate
  39. (even though Ivanova had given orders that any Ranger was to be shown
  40. in immediately). "I have a message", the Ranger says simply as way of
  41. explanation. "Who from?" asks Ivanova, and he replies: "I think you
  42. know." He hands her the message. She reads it silently, and then
  43. orders a shuttle readied so she can go to Minbar. She'll leave within
  44. the next fifteen minutes.
  45. <P>
  46. In Centauri Prime, a Ranger is escorted into Emperor Vir Cotto's
  47. bedroom, where he is "entertaining" two ladies. Vir's mood sobers when
  48. he sees the Ranger, and takes the message. He orders all his
  49. appointments cancelled for the next few days. He doesn't need to read
  50. the note; he already knows what it says.
  51. <P>
  52. On Mars, Garibaldi reads a newspaper, when Stephen Franklin comes in
  53. with Garibaldi's daughter. They've just been playing tennis. Garibaldi
  54. is still married to Lise and running Edgars Industries. Lise is out
  55. shopping, and Garibaldi promises his daughter he'll come out to play
  56. her soon. She leaves, and Garibaldi asks Franklin when he is due back
  57. on Earth. By tomorrow, says Franklin; as head of Xeno-Biological
  58. research, he has a lot of work that needs to be done.
  59. <P>
  60. Garibaldi's daughter silently escorts a Ranger in. The Ranger gives
  61. Garibaldi a card, which he opens and reads. "Is that what I think it
  62. is?" asks Franklin. "Yeah," Garibaldi replies, "Sheridan's dying. He
  63. wants us to come to Minbar for one last get-together before... well,
  64. before." Franklin's office can wait; he'll book a flight out. Should
  65. he book one for Garibaldi as well, he asks? "John and I may have had our
  66. differences in the past," Garibaldi says, "but he is a good man, and
  67. he is my friend." He is indeed going.
  68. <P>
  69. In Tuzanor, on Minbar, Sheridan again watches the sunrise.
  70. <P>
  71. Later, Franklin is checking Sheridan over. He never really understood
  72. what Lorien did, or how he kept Sheridan alive. He can't really tell
  73. much, but his best guess is that Sheridan has 4 or 5 days left, a week
  74. at most. Delenn comes in as Franklin heads out. But Sheridan doesn't
  75. want to talk about it: he wants laughts, a celebration, not a wake.
  76. <P>
  77. At dinner, Garibaldi is telling a story involving a Pak'ma'ra, a dead
  78. cat, and a data crystal; Franklin, Delenn, and Sheridan are laughing,
  79. while Vir listens intently. Ivanova sits silently, absorbed in her own
  80. thoughts.
  81. <P>
  82. When the story is over, Vir recalls another incident. Once, on Babylon
  83. 5, he and Londo happened to hear a group of Pak'ma'ra singing; a very
  84. rare occassion, done for religious reasons but a couple of times a
  85. year. It was, Vir says, the most beautiful sound he had ever heard,
  86. full of sadness, and hope, wonder, and a terrible sense of loss. Even
  87. Londo was moved, a year running down his face at the sound. "When it
  88. was over," Vir continues, "Londo turned to me and said 'There are
  89. forty-nine gods in our pantheon, Vir; to tell you the truth I never
  90. believed in any of them. But if only one of them exists, then God
  91. sings with that voice.' It's funny. After everything we have been
  92. through, all he did... I miss him."
  93. <P>
  94. Sheridan proposes a toast: "To absent friends, in memory still
  95. bright."
  96. <P>
  97. They raise their glasses. Garibaldi: "G'Kar."
  98. <P>
  99. Vir: "Londo."
  100. <P>
  101. Delenn: "Lennier."
  102. <P>
  103. Franklin: "Ma..." but Ivanova interrupts: "Marcus."
  104. <P>
  105. Later that night, Vir is fast asleep on the balcony, as Franklin,
  106. Sheridan, and Garibaldi talk. Ivanova looks at them, still silent, and
  107. moves away. Delenn follows her, and asks if she is all right. But
  108. Ivanova claims she is. Ivanova asks Delenn how she handles it;
  109. Delenn has had twenty years to prepare. As much as anybody can be
  110. ready, she is ready. "But I'm going to miss him terribly, Susan."
  111. <P>
  112. "So will I," Ivanova says. "I've buried so many friends, Delenn. I'm
  113. beginning to resent it, and I don't want to. It seems like, some days,
  114. there's no one left to play with. There's no joy any more."
  115. <P>
  116. Ivanova tries to change the subject, asks where David is. Sheridan and
  117. Delenn's son is away on a Ranger training mission, and they made it
  118. clear when he joined that he would not receive special
  119. treatment. Besides, Sheridan wanted to see his old friends, and wants
  120. David to remember his father the way he was.
  121. <P>
  122. There is something else Delenn wants to talk with Ivanova about. When
  123. Sheridan refused to accept re-election as the President of the
  124. Interstellar Alliance two years ago, Delenn was elected. Unable to
  125. devote her attention to the Rangers, she passed the mantle of Ranger
  126. One to Sheridan. When he leaves, she will have to choose a new leader
  127. for the Rangers, and she would like a human to maintain the sense of
  128. balance she and Sheridan have achieved. In fact, she would like
  129. Ivanova to take the job. Delenn knows Ivanova is not happy with her
  130. responsibilities at home, and here there will be no politics or
  131. bureaucracy in her way. She can create something new, answering only
  132. to Delenn. Ivanova thanks Delenn for the offer, but she'll have to
  133. think about it for a while. She thanks Delenn for everything, and goes
  134. off to bed.
  135. <P>
  136. Sheridan joins Delenn, who tells him the others are putting Vir to
  137. bed. They head to bed themselves, but Sheridan is not
  138. sleepy. Tomorrow, he says, is Sunday. As a kid, his father used to
  139. take them out for a drive every Sunday. And he is going to go for a
  140. drive tomorrow. He'll go early, before the others are up. They've had
  141. their time together, said what they wanted to say. And Sheridan wants
  142. to feel space again, for he belongs in space.
  143. <P>
  144. Besides, he adds, the Alliance, Sheridan and Delenn... it has all become
  145. half legend, half mythology. If it ends on Minbar, prosaically... But
  146. if it ends in space, he can add to the mythology, make it easier for
  147. Delenn to hang on to everyone after he's gone. There will be more
  148. legend to remember.
  149. <P>
  150. In the morning, Sheridan dresses in his old Army of Light uniform, and
  151. prepares to leave before sunrise. Delenn, dressed up in white, greets
  152. him in the corridor. After all, it's Sunday, and one dresses up on
  153. Sundays. It's a perfect day for a drive. But if he really wants to go,
  154. he must leave now; the others will awake soon.
  155. <P>
  156. "Good night, my love," Sheridan tells her as they embrace for the last
  157. time, "the brightest star in my sky." "Good night," answers Delenn, a
  158. tear running down her cheek. "You were my sky, and my sun, and my
  159. moon." Tears in his eyes, Sheridan lets go, and slowly leaves, not
  160. looking back.
  161. <P>
  162. Sheridan makes his way to Babylon 5 on a ship by himself. The place
  163. seems empty, a single bored guard at the entrance. The commander
  164. rushes in, apologizing for being elsewhere, unaware Sheridan was
  165. coming. "I was just in the neighborhood and thought I'd stop by," says
  166. Sheridan, and asks where everyone is.
  167. <P>
  168. Well, the commander explains, nobody really goes there anyomore. The
  169. station has been superseded by the Alliance, has become
  170. redundant. Only the shutdown crew and a few others are still on
  171. board. Babylon 5 was returned to Earth a few years ago, but budgetary
  172. concerns will force it to close; they are getting ready to shut it
  173. down, and they'll have to scuttle her then, to prevent the station from
  174. becoming a hazard to navigation.
  175. <P>
  176. "Looks like we are still tied together," Sheridan tells the station,
  177. "even now." He goes for a quick look around, showing signs of
  178. fatigue. In an empty Zocalo, he finds Zack Allan, back in EarthForce
  179. security uniform, and limping.
  180. <P>
  181. Zack went back to Earth for a while, but got bored and came back;
  182. which explains why Sheridan's message didn't find him on Earth. Zack
  183. wanted to be on the station till they turned the lights off. He asks if
  184. Sheridan is staying for the decommissioning ceremony, but Sheridan
  185. simply says he can't stay, not even to grab a quick bite with Zack; he
  186. doesn't have time.
  187. <P>
  188. "I just wanted to come and have one last look around," Sheridan
  189. explains. He is on his way to the Coriana system, where they won the
  190. Shadow War (<a href="../guide/072.html">"Into the Fire"</a>).
  191. <P>
  192. Sheridan arrives at Corianna six, his life running out. Delenn, alone
  193. in bed back on Minbar, starts crying, as his ship floats, hanging in
  194. space. Sheridan turns all the systems off, and looks at the stars as
  195. he starts to fade out.
  196. <P>
  197. A bright light brings him back to consciousness, as Lorien's voice
  198. rings our, asking the questions that defined the sides in the Shadow
  199. War:
  200. <P>
  201. "Who are you? What do you want? Why are you here?"
  202. <P>
  203. And suddenly, Lorien is besides him, and continues: "Where are you
  204. going?"
  205. <P>
  206. Did you think we had forgotten you?" he adds with a faint
  207. smile. "We have been waiting for you." "Beyond the rim," Sheridan
  208. finishes for him, and Lorien nods.
  209. <P>
  210. "Can I come back?" Sheridan asks. "No," replies Lorien. "This journey
  211. is ended. Another begins. Time to rest now." Sheridan smiles, and
  212. light engulfes the inside of the ship. "Well, look at that," Sheridan
  213. says, looking into the light. "The sun's coming up." The light fades
  214. out, leaving the ship dark.
  215. <P>
  216. <i> Ivanova: "An expedition to Coriana space found Sheridan's ship a
  217. few days later, but they never found him. All the airlocks were
  218. sealed, but there was no trace of him inside. Some of the Minbari
  219. believe he'll come back some day, but I never saw him again in my
  220. lifetime."</i>
  221. <P>
  222. Ivanova joins Vir, Zack, Garibaldi, Delenn, and Franklin at the
  223. decommissioning ceremony of Babylon 5. They leave the station in a
  224. shuttle, passing between two rows of ships from all the races. The
  225. lights in the station are turned off, and it stops spinning. As the
  226. ships depart, the station is blown up, level by level, section by
  227. section.
  228. <P>
  229. <i>"Babylon 5 was the last of the Babylon stations. There
  230. would never be another. It changed the future, and it changed us. It
  231. taught us that we had to create the future, or others will do it for
  232. us.</i>
  233. <P>
  234. Garibaldi returns to his wife and family on Mars.
  235. <P><i> "It showed us that we have to care for each other, because if
  236. we don't, who will?</i>
  237. <P>
  238. Franklin returns to his job on Earth, helping heal both aliens and
  239. humans.
  240. <P><i>"And that strength sometimes comes from the most unlikely of
  241. places.</i>
  242. <P>Zack goes to Centauri Prime and works for Emperor Vir Cotto.
  243. <P><i>"Mostly, though, I think it gave us hope that there can always
  244. be new beginnings, even for people like us.</i>
  245. <P>Ivanova accepts the position of leader of the Rangers.
  246. <P><i>"As for Delenn, every morning for as long as she lived, Delenn
  247. got up before dawn and watched the sun come up..."</i>
