  1. <h3>Synopsis by Arturo Magidin (magidin@matem.unam.mx)</h3>
  2. <p>
  3. Number One, formerly of the Mars Resistance (<a
  4. href="../guide/076.html">"Racing Mars"</a>) is trying to enter
  5. Babylon 5, but the computer does not recognize her passport. When Zack
  6. arrives, she explains her name is Tessa Halloran, a member of the
  7. Mars Provisional Government; under the terms of the new treaty (<a
  8. href="../guide/087.html">"Rising Star"</a>), Mars is authorized
  9. to issue its own passports and money, but Earth is dragging their feet
  10. in terms of updating they systems, in an effort to harass them;
  11. forcing Mars citizens to use Earth documents. But Number One will not
  12. put up with the blackmail. Fortunately, Franklin happens by and
  13. vouches for her to Zack, so she is allowed in.
  14. <P>
  15. Number One is looking for Garibaldi. Garibaldi is in his quarters with
  16. Lise. He is vomiting, going through detox, when Franklin and Number
  17. One arrive, just in time to hear more retching. Number One explains
  18. that in the next few days, someone will try to kill Garibaldi and
  19. Lise.
  20. <P>
  21. Once Mars declared independence, the corporations with ties to Earth
  22. ran for cover; they had been exploiting and strip mining Mars, so they
  23. were scared. The Provisional Government went for their records, and
  24. offered immunity to those who would help. They now have sources inside
  25. all major corporations still on Mars; among them, Edgars Industries,
  26. which Lise now owns. The company ran several black projects for
  27. Clarke, but Lise didn't know about them.
  28. <P>
  29. Garibaldi puts it all together now: someone is afraid she'll find out
  30. something she shouldn't, so they want her out of the way. Number One
  31. confirms it, and adds that since Garibaldi can help her, they want him
  32. out too. She doesn't know who is behind it, or who will do the
  33. killing, but she does know it will happen before Lise and Garibaldi
  34. leave for Mars. Franklin is surprised to hear Garibaldi is leaving,
  35. but happy for him that he is getting together with Lise.
  36. <P>
  37. G'Kar is on his way to see Lyta; armed security protects him, and
  38. keeps his admiring Narn at bay, including one holding a stattuette of
  39. G'Kar, who yells more insistently than the rest. G'Kar enters the cell
  40. alone. Lyta has been told about G'Kar's offer; it makes sense, she
  41. admits, but isn't too happy. She also suspects G'Kar has an ulterior
  42. motive: he wants to keep his access to telepath DNA. G'Kar is saddened
  43. by her attitude: "That's why you think I'm doing this? Just that, my
  44. own personal interest?" "Well, yeah," replies Lyta. G'Kar looks
  45. pityingly at her, and says: "Then my decision was even more correct
  46. than I imagined." He will make sure all the arrangements are made for
  47. her.
  48. <P>
  49. Franklin and Zack brief Sheridan on the situation, and Sheridan tells
  50. Garibaldi their plan: Garibaldi and Lise will stay out of sight and
  51. under guard. Then, an elaborate going away ceremony will be staged for
  52. G'Kar, Garibaldi, and Lise. Since this will be his only shot, the
  53. assassin will have to act then. Zack will have the place crawling with
  54. security, and will take the assassin down when he moves. Garibaldi is
  55. somewhat surprised to find out this is Zack's idea. "You taught him
  56. well," says Sheridan.
  57. <P>
  58. Sheridan now also knows Garibaldi is leaving for Mars. Garibaldi
  59. explains he and Lise are getting married, and he knows he is not
  60. getting his job as Head of Intelligence back. Sheridan does not
  61. contradict him, but congratulates him on the wedding.
  62. <P>
  63. A lone security guard is joined on a lift by a man. The man
  64. efficiently and silently stabs him, and takes his link, replacing it
  65. with another one. The body is found later, and the switch goes
  66. unnoticed. Zack doesn't understand why the security guard was killed, but he
  67. knows it was a professional. In his quarters, the assassin tries to modify the
  68. link to gain access to security channels. After some work, he
  69. succeeds.
  70. <P>
  71. Sheridan is seeing Number One, who reports Earth still treats Mars as
  72. a colony, making everything go through Earth. Also, dissention among the
  73. Resistance is coming to the surface. As Sheridan poins out,
  74. independence wars are often followed by civil wars. Number One agrees,
  75. and thinks Earth is increasing the pressure on the Provisional
  76. Government to cause a civil war; then they can come back and rescue
  77. everyone, and take over for the "general good." As far as she can
  78. tell, her best options are to expand her contacts. Sheridan
  79. offers to set up a diplomatic office on Minbar and an account outside
  80. of Earth jurisdiction. Number One is very happy to hear it and is very
  81. thankful. In exchange, Sheridan wants her to stick around a bit. He
  82. would rather not say why, but he has just had an idea he wants to kick
  83. around for a while. Number One, intrigued, agrees.
  84. <P>
  85. The preparations for G'Kar's going-away are under way in the
  86. Zocalo. G'Kar observes from a distance, and sighs sadly. Suddenly, behind
  87. him stands the Narn who was trying to talk to him earlier. He has heard
  88. G'Kar is leaving. He claims G'Kar has an obligation to either stay and
  89. teach, or go to Narn and lead. G'Kar tries to explain that his only
  90. obligation is to his own principles, but the Narn isn't listening. He
  91. spent all his money to come to Babylon 5. "We put you in this position,
  92. G'Kar," the Narn says. "Our reverence is our gift to you. And you are
  93. responsible to us. You owe us. Without us... you are nothing." "Then I
  94. am nothing," says G'Kar, and tries to leave. The Narn doesn't let him
  95. go, and shows him the statuette which he has made and is selling, his
  96. way to honor G'Kar. G'Kar takes the stattuette he is holding, and
  97. snaps it in half. "Go home," he tells him, and leaves.
  98. <P>
  99. "Don't; don't tell me to go home," the Narn pleads to no
  100. effect. "Don't turn your back on me, G'Kar!"
  101. <P>
  102. Zack arrives in MedLab to take the guard's personal effects home. He
  103. discovers that the link has some sort of adhesive on the back. This is
  104. very unusual; links are matched to their owners, and adhere using a
  105. special molecular binding material, tailor made to them. He now has a
  106. lead: the guard was killed for his link, which means it was the professional
  107. assassin after Garibaldi.
  108. <P>
  109. In his quarters, the assassin prepares to leave for G'Kar's going away
  110. bash, now under way. The Zocalo is full of Narn, and a few others,
  111. cheering G'Kar. The assassin blends in as G'Kar, Lise, Garibaldi, and
  112. Sheridan make their way to the podium.
  113. <P>
  114. Sheridan announces that Garibaldi is leaving, as is G'Kar. He praises
  115. both for their work on Babylon 5, and expresses his admiration for
  116. G'Kar. G'Kar stands up to speak. Zack orders a piercing noise to be sent to the
  117. assassin's link. The assassin lurches in pain,
  118. betraying himself, and is quickly taken down by security. The threat
  119. to Lise and Garibaldi is over.
  120. <P>
  121. But not the threat to G'Kar. The disgruntled stattuette maker steps
  122. forward, a PPG in his hand. "You are not worthy of us!" he yells and
  123. prepares to fire. Zack notices, and pushes G'Kar out of the way... and
  124. the shot hits Lise in the shoulder instead. She falls unconscious.
  125. <P>
  126. In MedLab, Franklin works on her wound, as Garibaldi looks on. G'Kar
  127. arrives to inquire on Lise's condition, but Garibaldi says they won't
  128. know anything for a while. Franklin comes out and says they've done
  129. everything they can for Lise; the rest is up to her.
  130. <P>
  131. Garibaldi leaves and runs into Zack, who wants to talk to him about
  132. pressing charges on the Narn. But Garibaldi wants five minutes with
  133. the assassin. Zack tells him he can't do that, but Garibaldi
  134. insists. Either Zack lets him in, or he will have to shoot Garibaldi
  135. to stop him. Garibaldi takes the assassin to Lyta, so she can find
  136. out who hired him. Lyta doesn't want to help, but Garibaldi makes it a
  137. deal-breaker: either she does, or his whole deal with her (<a
  138. href="../guide/107.html">"Wheel of Fire"</a>) is off.
  139. <P>
  140. Lyta begins scanning. The assassin is well trained, and blocks her
  141. for a while, but is no match for her enhanced powers. She slips in
  142. and knocks him out so he won't remember anything. She also gets the
  143. information. He was hired by the Board of Directors of Edgars
  144. Industries. Not one of the directors, but the entire board. They
  145. promised to back each other up if things went badly. And there is no
  146. proof, so Garibaldi can't do anything about it. At least not legally.
  147. <P>
  148. In his quarters, G'Kar is packing when Sheridan arrives. Sheridan was
  149. hoping G'Kar would stay until Delenn returned from Minbar, but the
  150. events of the last hours have convinced G'Kar that he must leave as
  151. soon as possible, or put everyone at risk. G'Kar has purchased a long
  152. range survey ship, and is ready to leave.
  153. <P>
  154. "I've always had the greatest respect for you," says Sheridan. "I'll
  155. miss you."
  156. <P>
  157. "Unnecessary," answers G'Kar. "You see, I believe that when we leave
  158. a place, part of it goes with us and part of us remains. Go anywhere
  159. in the station, when it is quiet, and just listen. After a while, you
  160. will hear the echoes of all our conversations. Every thought and word
  161. we've exchanged. Long after we're gone, our voices will linger in
  162. these walls for as long as this place remains. But I will admit that
  163. the part of me that is going will very much miss the part of you that
  164. is staying."
  165. <P>
  166. After Sheridan leaves, G'Kar dictates a message for later delivery.
  167. <P>
  168. In MedLab, Garibaldi has fallen asleep by Lise's side by the time she
  169. wakes up. Garibaldi is relieved: according to Franklin, if she woke up
  170. she would be all right. And Garibaldi has a surprise: a minister
  171. waiting outside. He wants to get married as soon as possible, before
  172. the Universe throws anything else at them. Lise happily agrees.
  173. <P>
  174. In the embarkation bay, G'Kar is looking over his ship when Lyta
  175. arrives, escorted and handcuffed. He asks that the handcuffs be
  176. removed, but Lyta easily takes them off herself; she only kept them on
  177. because it made everyone feel safe. The guards leave them alone. On
  178. the way to the ship, she looks around, but nobody is there to see her off. As
  179. they approach the ship, Zack steps from behind some crates and watches
  180. her leave.
  181. <P>
  182. On Mars, the Board of Edgars Industries has convened, and receives a
  183. call from Garibaldi. The Board claims their investigation has
  184. established that the head of security hired the assassin, and later
  185. committed suicide, leaving a note taking all responsibility. Nothing
  186. else can be proven.
  187. <P>
  188. Garibaldi, however, has information about the members of the board:
  189. adultery, children out of wedlock, even some questionable "accidents"
  190. that caused deaths. And he is fully ready to use this information. How
  191. did he get it? Although not the Head of Intelligence anymore, he knows
  192. who the new person on the job is, and introduces her: Number One.
  193. <P>
  194. According to her information, the Board is actually responsible for
  195. many of the problems Mars has been facing since independence. If she
  196. makes half of that information public, they will be skinned alive by
  197. the mobs.
  198. <P>
  199. Garibaldi asks her to leave the room, and continues to talk to the
  200. board. He wants all of them to resign. And he will deposit a
  201. substantial sum of money in the bank. If anything should happen to him
  202. or Lise, anything at all, it will be paid out to certain individuals
  203. who will take out every former member of the board. Enough money, in
  204. fact, to have every bounty hunter in the system after them. The former
  205. members of the Board have little choice.
  206. <P>
  207. Franklin and Number One are having a drink. She figures her new
  208. position will let her help Mars even more than when she was there. She
  209. certainly didn't expect the new job when she got to Babylon 5, but is
  210. happy with it. Since Franklin is leaving for Earth, their relationship
  211. (<a href="../guide/077.html">"Lines of Communication"</a>)
  212. wouldn't work out anyway. They can, however, "celebrate" one more time
  213. before he goes back on duty.
  214. <P>
  215. Delenn arrives back from Minbar, and is greeted by Sheridan. The
  216. Alliance Headquarters are almost ready, a week more at the most, and
  217. they can move in any time. They run into Garibaldi and Lise, who are
  218. about to leave for Mars. They say goodbye, and Garibaldi, the last of
  219. the original command crew, leaves.
  220. <P>
  221. "Of all the recent partings, I think this will be the hardest," Delenn
  222. tells Sheridan; "You think he'll be all right?" "Yeah, oh yeah,"
  223. answers Sheridan. "But you're right. The place won't be the same
  224. without him."
  225. <P>
  226. "We're next, you know," says Delenn. "It occurs to me I have never
  227. walked the length of this place end to end." "It's five miles long,"
  228. says Sheridan. "I know," she replies. "Coming?"
  229. <P>
  230. He smiles, takes her hand, and they start walking.
