  1. <h3>Synopsis by Arturo Magidin (magidin@math.berkeley.edu)</h3>
  2. <P>
  3. In the customs area, a man carrying a large bag has nothing to declare
  4. except his genius. Inside the bag, a small man holds up a small
  5. device, which also declares nothing but Rebo's genius. Rebo and Zooty have
  6. arrived on Babylon 5.
  7. <P>
  8. Lochley, Sheridan and Garibaldi are on their way to meet the comedy
  9. duo. Lochley mentions that the Brakiri have asked to buy a part of
  10. Babylon 5 for a night, for religious reasons.
  11. <P>
  12. Outside his quarters, Londo is accosted by a Brakiri salesman, who is
  13. offering a skull-shaped candy. On recognizing Londo as the Centauri
  14. Emperor-to-be, he offers the candy as a gift, and asks Londo whom he
  15. would like to meet from among the dead. "The first Emperor," replies
  16. Londo as he accepts the candy. He asks the salesman what sort of
  17. festival this is. "Tonight is the Day of the Dead," the Brakiri
  18. replies. "Tonight the dead return."
  19. <P>
  20. Delenn is alone in her quarters when Lennier arrives, dressed in a
  21. Ranger uniform. He is between training cycles, and having read once
  22. about the Brakiri Day of the Dead, which occurs only once every 200
  23. years, he decided to visit. Since Babylon 5 is easier to get to than
  24. Brakir, he came to the station.
  25. <P>
  26. Sheridan is hosting a cocktail party for Rebo and Zooty, and confers
  27. upon them the Freedom of Babylon 5. Rebo gives a speech, interspersed
  28. with physical comedy. Most in attendance find it hilarious, but
  29. Lochley is not amused. She leaves for an appointment with the Brakiri
  30. ambassador. G'Kar overhears about the appointment and looks worried.
  31. <P>
  32. In Lochley's office, the Brakiri ambassador explains to the Captain
  33. that they must own part of the station by nightfall, so it will be
  34. part of Brakir for the celebration. He assures Lochley it will be
  35. returned in the morning. Lochley explains the usual operations of
  36. Babylon 5 do not allow this, but she is ready to make an
  37. exception. Before the transaction is over, G'Kar bursts into the
  38. office and warns Lochley that selling the station would be foolish and
  39. dangerous. But Lochley reminds him that according to the declaration
  40. of principles of the Alliance, religious beliefs are sacrosanct. Over
  41. G'Kar's objections, the transaction is completed.
  42. <P>
  43. Later, the Brakiri ambassador explains to Garibaldi that part of the
  44. station is now part of Brakir. Garibaldi's quarters are on the Brakiri
  45. side, and he goes in just as the Day of the Dead begins.
  46. <P>
  47. Sheridan arrives to his quarters with Rebo and Zooty for
  48. dinner. Delenn welcomes them, and Zooty's machine says something in
  49. Minbari: a pun, to which Delenn reacts by laughing heartily. Rebo
  50. explains they have studied Minbari and Narn humor, among other
  51. forms. When Delenn escorts Zooty to the table, Sheridan mentions to
  52. Rebo that he was hoping to talk to Zooty without the machine. Rebo
  53. explains that Zooty never breaks character. After ten years, Rebo has
  54. only heard Zooty say one word without the machine: "Why?" He doesn't
  55. undertand it either.
  56. <P>
  57. In her quarters, Lochley is reading some reports when night falls. The
  58. area of the station purchased by the Brakiri is surrounded by a
  59. shimmering energy field; at the same time, Lennier sits down to
  60. meditate in his quarters, and Londo drinks some Brevare.
  61. <P>
  62. In C&amp;C, Corwin is trying to emulate one of Rebo and Zooty's hat
  63. tricks, when G'Kar enters, dressed for bed. His quarters are on the
  64. Brakiri zone, so he would like to sleep in C&amp;C for the night. Corwin
  65. lets him.
  66. <P>
  67. In Lochley's quarters, the power suddenly goes out, replaced by
  68. emergency lights. Lochley is unable to contact anyone on the link.
  69. <P>
  70. Londo is in his quarters, talking to a portrait of the first Emperor,
  71. but the portrait is silent. His lights go out as well, and behind him
  72. a figure materializes: Adira Tyree (<a href="../guide/003.html">"Born
  73. to the Purple"</a>). Londo is overjoyed. He tells her he is to become
  74. Emperor, but would give it all away just to have Adira by his
  75. side. She embraces him and they they kiss.
  76. <P>
  77. Garibaldi is asleep in his bed, but the shower turns itself on. He
  78. pulls a PPG from under the pillow and orders whoever is there to come
  79. out. A woman's voice answers and then steps out: Dodger, the gropo (<a
  80. href="../guide/032.html">"GROPOS"</a>). Garibaldi is utterly confused;
  81. without lowering the gun, he wonders if it is a clone, a robot, or
  82. maybe the latest from Bester's bag of tricks. She assures him it is
  83. nobody's trick. "Happy Day of the Dead," she says with a smile.
  84. <P>
  85. In her quarters, Lochley is trying to communicate with the rest of the
  86. station, which the link claims is out of range. A small blond teenager
  87. materializes coughing, and says "Lizzie? Is that you?" Lochley is
  88. overcome and stands staring dumbly at the girl. "Zoe?" gulps Lochely,
  89. forcing back tears.
  90. <P>
  91. Lochley and Zoe sit on the bed and talk, both of them crying. They
  92. were runaways together, and did drugs. It's been 20 years since Zoe's
  93. death. Zoe asks Lochley what happened after her death. Lochley found
  94. Zoe's body, dead from a drug overdose. She got scared, called her parents,
  95. and her father arrived
  96. ten hours later. She later enrolled in OTC. Lochley asks Zoe something
  97. she's always wondered: "Did you do it on purpose?" but Zoe claims she
  98. doesn't remember.
  99. <P>
  100. Sheridan and Delenn's quarters are outside the Brakiri zone. Dinner is
  101. almost over when Sheridan gets a call from Corwin, to tell him that a
  102. piece of the station is missing: the part sold to the
  103. Brakiri. Sheridan walks over to investigate and finds the shimmering
  104. wall. He throws a fire extinguisher at the wall, but it bounces
  105. back. He goes to C&amp;C to talk to Corwin.
  106. <P>
  107. Garibaldi finally puts the PPG back under the pillow. Although still
  108. perplexed, he is taking it all in stride now. Garibaldi and Dodger
  109. start to talk.
  110. <P>
  111. Lennier is meditating when a voice says: "Good evening, Ranger
  112. Lennier." It is Morden, although Lennier cannot place him
  113. immediately. He eventually does, however: "You worked for the
  114. Shadows," accuses Lennier. "I did lots of things, yes," replies
  115. Morden. "Looking back on it, though," he continues, "I just tried to
  116. make people happy. Anyway, it is all ancient history now, and I paid
  117. for all my crimes, huh?" he concludes with a smile.
  118. <P>
  119. Lennier asks him why he came, and Morden replies that he is dead,
  120. and thus it is his job. Then Morden asks Lennier why he came back. "I
  121. came for wisdom," answers Lennier. "You don't come to the Dead for wisdom,
  122. Lennier," replies Morden. He says his head is still rotting outside the
  123. Centauri Royal Palace, but Lennier insists he wants wisdom.
  124. <P>
  125. "Wisdom?" muses Morden. "Let's see: Delenn does not love you as you
  126. love her, and she never will." "I know that," replies Lennier. "No,
  127. you don't," counters Morden. "Not in your heart." Lennier tells Morden
  128. to go away, but he does not; now that Morden has been raised, Lennier must
  129. listen. Lennier tries to leave, only to find the shimmering
  130. wall outside. He starts to run, but soon collapses.
  131. <P>
  132. Sheridan enters C&amp;C to find G'Kar asleep on the deck. Sheridan asks
  133. Corwin to contact the Brakiri homeworld.
  134. <P>
  135. Morden tosses Lennier back into his quarters. He explains that the
  136. other side of the corridor is 200 million light years away; no way to
  137. get there by foot. Morden continues to talk, and tells Lennier that he
  138. is destined to betray the Rangers; Lennier does not believe
  139. him. Morden then implies Lennier will die soon, and Lennier angrily
  140. denies him again; finally, Lennier settles down to meditate, saying
  141. "Our talk is done." "Your loss," sighs Morden, as he sits down to read
  142. the newspaper.
  143. <P>
  144. In Lochley's quarters, Lochley is again trying to contact the rest of
  145. the station. Zoe points out that they are now in part of the Brakiri
  146. homeworld, and although Lochley doesn't believe it, she manages to
  147. contact Garibaldi, who is talking to Dodger. Lochley orders Garibaldi to
  148. hack into Stellar Com and route a call to C&amp;C.
  149. <P>
  150. In Londo's quarters, Adira and Londo are in bed. Lochley appears on
  151. the screen and says normality will be restored soon. "She is right,"
  152. says Adira ruefully. "And when this night is done, so am I. And you
  153. will go on to become Emperor Mollari." "I don't want to become
  154. Emperor," replies Londo. "I want to stay here, with you." "Londo, I'm
  155. a dream," says Adira. "In the morning I'll be gone, and you will rule
  156. 40 billion Centauri. But not one of them will ever know you the way I
  157. know you." She settles down on Londo's chest as they both smile
  158. contentedly.
  159. <P>
  160. In his quarters, Garibaldi is hacking the communications system, much
  161. to Dodger's frustration; Garibaldi succeeds, and lets Lochley know
  162. before settling down to talk to Dodger for the remaining hours of the
  163. Day of the Dead.
  164. <P>
  165. In Sheridan's quarters, Rebo is expressing to Delenn his admiration
  166. for how calm and collected Delenn and Sheridan are in the face of this
  167. emergency. He confides to Delenn that they both admire the two of them
  168. a lot, and in fact that Rebo and Zooty plan to give up show business
  169. for politics. Sheridan comes back, and Delenn tells him of Rebo and
  170. Zooty's decision. Sheridan tries to talk them out of it, but Rebo says
  171. that no one takes comedians seriously, and they want to be taken
  172. seriously. Besides, he says, the real comedy all happens in the Senate.
  173. <P>
  174. Lochley's call comes in then, and she tells Sheridan everything is
  175. fine, and will probably go back to normal in the morning. This is also
  176. what the people in Brakir told Sheridan.
  177. <P>
  178. Morning finds Lennier meditating and Morden reading the paper; shortly
  179. thereafter, Morden disappears. Dodger and Garibaldi are talking and
  180. laughing together. Dodger senses that her time is up, and sobers
  181. up. She kisses Garibaldi on the forehead, stands up and disappears.
  182. <P>
  183. Zoe finishes telling Lochley a message she was given for
  184. Sheridan. Before leaving, she finally tells Lochley that she does
  185. remember her own death, and she did it on purpose because she couldn't
  186. stand her life any more. She disappears, and normality returns.
  187. <P>
  188. Later that morning, Sheridan and Lochley are talking. Lochley refuses
  189. to give details of her experience, saying that it was intensely
  190. personal; the same thing everyone else has told Sheridan. No one
  191. really knows what happened, though. She does give Sheridan the message
  192. she got for him. It is from Kosh: "When the long night comes, return
  193. to the end of the beginning."
  194. <P>
  195. Lochley leaves and is later joined by G'Kar. Lochley expects him to
  196. say I told you so, but instead he points out he was wrong; the people
  197. who were in the Brakiri territory seem more at peace with
  198. themselves. G'Kar wonders what he would have seen had he been there.
  199. <P>
  200. Then they see Londo, Rebo and Zooty walk by, followed by
  201. reporters. Londo is quite amused, and promises never to miss their
  202. show from now on. He also asks them to perform at his inauguration.
  203. <P>
  204. Before he leaves, Zooty calls the just arrived Sheridan aside, and
  205. whispers something in his ear, pointing at his device: "Because it
  206. tells me to."
