  1. <h3>Synopsis by Katrina Glerum (kat@midwinter.com)</h3>

  4. The command staff arrives for breakfast to find Sheridan leaned up against
  5. the wall carrying on a conversation with himself. Their attempts to engage
  6. him don't get through, but his occasional outbursts of laughter disturb
  7. their conversation. Trying to form the non-aligned worlds into a union
  8. again is a daunting task, they agree, but one that must be done.
  9. <p>
  10. With an exultant shout, the Captain stands up and comes over to their
  11. table. "There has got to be an easier way to do this!" he enthuses, with
  12. his characteristic "I've got an idea" gleam in his eye. He orders Marcus
  13. to take three White Stars to a sector of Centauri border space and wait
  14. there for orders.
  15. <p>
  16. As he leaves in a hurry, Ivanova gets up and sniffs his empty coffee mug.
  17. "Just checking..." she remarks only half in jest. Franklin laughs that
  18. this is after Delenn has only been gone three days.
  19. <br clear=all>

  22. There is no laughter for Delenn, however. Lennier reports fighting in the
  23. capital, the opening salvo of civil war. In the next days she passes
  24. time in a chamber watching scenes of the capital city in all its
  25. splendor, and she weeps to think of it in flames. "Did I do this, when I
  26. broke the Grey Council?" she asks. Valen predicted that she would, but
  27. since he was Sinclair, he could not have known what would pass after the
  28. breaking. There is no prophecy to steer her course now.
  29. <p>
  30. What she does know is that the fighting must be stopped immediately, or
  31. they will all face a millenium of war. And so she goes to rendezvous with
  32. the leaders of the religious caste. She has also invited her old enemy
  33. Neroon of the warrior caste to meet her there.
  34. <br clear=all>
  35. <p>
  36. <img align=right width=128 height=96 alt="" src="/lurk/gif/079/sherlondo.jpeg">
  37. Ambassador Mollari is baffled that the Captain is asking him to deny that
  38. the White Stars are patrolling the borders of Centauri space, especially
  39. since their presence there was for the sole purpose of inspiring the League
  40. worlds to allow White Stars on their own borders. As Londo launches into a
  41. tirade about human psychology, Sheridan reaches out comfortingly and
  42. smiling broadly says, "Trust me."
  43. <p>
  44. Delenn strides purposefully on board the waiting Minbari war cruiser into
  45. palpable tension, as she finds Neroon and a small party of warriors lined
  46. up opposite a welcoming party from the religious caste. Apparently
  47. Neroon's presence aboard the religious caste vessel has been met with a
  48. hostility just shy of violence. Delenn states that he is under her
  49. personal protection and demands to speak with him at once. She stares his
  50. adjutants down until they make way for her passage.
  51. <p>
  52. Lennier turns toward the religious caste leaders, and as he passes by they
  53. hiss their anger at the honor with which she treats Neroon. Loyal as
  54. ever, Lennier simply states that they must wait for Delenn to speak for
  55. herself.
  56. <br clear=all>
  57. <p>
  58. <img align=right width=128 height=96 alt="" src="/lurk/gif/079/plan.jpeg">
  59. Alone with Neroon at last, Delenn asks for his help. When he reminds her
  60. that the last time they met he intended to kill her to keep her from taking
  61. control of the Rangers, she states that despite their differences he has
  62. always acted honorably and to serve their people. She explains that
  63. neither the warrior caste nor the religious caste can win the war because
  64. it will unbalance their society.
  65. <p>
  66. With a fragile trust they sit to discuss. He argues that their "world gone
  67. mad" cannot be stopped easily, but she has a plan. Even though it will expose
  68. them both to the mistrust of their respective castes, he offers her his
  69. temporary support. Meanwhile, panicked civilians flee through the burning
  70. capital.
  71. <p>
  72. The Drazi Ambassador pounces on Sheridan in the Zocalo to ask about the
  73. White Stars which have been sighted on the borders of Centauri space. At
  74. first amiably and then curtly the Captain refuses to comment, leaving the
  75. Drazi more frustrated than ever.
  76. <br clear=all>
  77. <p>
  78. <img align=right width=128 height=96 alt="" src="/lurk/gif/079/shootrocks.jpeg">
  79. After standing by waiting with his three White Stars for the Captain's
  80. orders, Marcus is not pleased to hear that he's gone all that way to
  81. destroy asteroids.
  82. <p>
  83. "I see," he says, mystified. "Shoot a bunch of rocks, and then leave."
  84. <p>
  85. Sheridan appears almost annoyed at being questioned, and tells Marcus to
  86. follow orders. Ivanova tries to question him too, but he blithely agrees
  87. that it was an unusual command and departs to find Franklin.
  88. <br clear=all>
  89. <p>
  90. <img align=right width=128 height=96 alt="" src="/lurk/gif/079/denial.jpeg">
  91. The Drazi Ambassador calls upon Londo for an explanation as well, but only
  92. meets with a categorical denial and a heap of insults thrown in for good
  93. measure. He is now deeply worried and quickly huddles with the other
  94. League ambassadors in the corridor. At that moment Franklin finds them and
  95. asks them each to ask their governments to send extra blood supplies for
  96. their species, just in case of an attack.
  97. <br clear=all>
  98. <p>
  99. <img align=right width=128 height=96 alt="" src="/lurk/gif/079/poison.jpeg">
  100. The religious leaders are also busy trying to figure out what Delenn is up
  101. to. She must intend to surrender, some say. One of them even eavesdropped
  102. on her conversation with Neroon enough to hear her say that the religious
  103. caste should not win the war. Another argues that killing someone so
  104. revered would split their caste deeply. So the first replies that they
  105. must martyr themselves and the entire ship to prevent her from reaching
  106. homeworld. They place a small time-release cask of toxic material in an
  107. air duct and prepare their hearts for death, unaware that Lennier has
  108. observed their scheming.
  109. <br clear=all>
  110. <p>
  111. <img align=right width=128 height=96 alt="" src="/lurk/gif/079/story.jpeg">
  112. The Voice of the Resistance is about to begin broadcasting when Sheridan
  113. casually steps into the War Room. Just as casually he asks Ivanova to
  114. report that nothing happened today in sector 83x9x12. It won't be a lie,
  115. he argues, because it's true. Keeping bewilderment just barely at bay, the
  116. Commander goes on the air the next moment with this announcement, and
  117. advises everyone to please remain calm. This message and the intelligence
  118. that three White Stars engaged an apparently invisible enemy in an asteroid
  119. field drives the perturbed League ambassadors deeper into the arms of
  120. paranoia.
  121. <br clear=all>
  122. <p>
  123. <img align=right width=128 height=96 alt="" src="/lurk/gif/079/minor.jpeg">
  124. Standing in contemplation in the cruiser's battle command center, Neroon is
  125. suddenly attacked by one of his retainers. Delenn is furious. After
  126. Neroon is taken away for care and the attacker thrown in the brig, she asks
  127. the religious leaders to watch over him because his caste believes he will
  128. surrender to her, and thus will do anything to stop him. The religious
  129. caste members exchange a
  130. quick look, and one asks if they really don't intend to surrender.
  131. <br clear=all>
  132. <p>
  133. <img align=right width=128 height=96 alt="" src="/lurk/gif/079/steady.jpeg">
  134. "Don't be foolish," she retorts, and explains again that neither side can
  135. surrender to the other or there will be chaos. She shakes her head in
  136. dismay at the warrior caste who are so full of extremism that they would
  137. attack one of their own. Her compatriots' remorse only grows as she says
  138. gratefully, "But you. You are the steady rock beneath my feet." They
  139. realize that it is now too late to prevent their own pointless suicide.
  140. <p>
  141. But they did not count on Lennier, who is able to reach the cask in time to
  142. shut off the valve just as the poison begins to escape. "Have we fallen so
  143. far that we cannot even trust ourselves?" he asks them as he collapses from
  144. the effects of the fumes.
  145. <p>
  146. Neroon reports that Lennier is being tended by his personal physician, but until
  147. he recovers there is no explanation for how he was exposed to the toxin.
  148. When pressed, Delenn admits how deeply she cares for Lennier, that she is
  149. training him the way she was trained by Dukhat, and that she utterly relies
  150. on him.
  151. <p>
  152. Neroon tells Delenn that if their people are ever to understand why she
  153. treated him with honor, it will be because she taught them, and ruefully
  154. admits that he is finally coming to see why Dukhat chose her to succeed
  155. him. "I do not know what lies ahead, Delenn. But I do know that it is
  156. right that we are here."
  157. <br clear=all>
  158. <p>
  159. <img align=right width=128 height=96 alt="" src="/lurk/gif/079/league.jpeg">
  160. The League ambassadors call a hasty council meeting. When Sheridan
  161. arrives, they present him with their demands. He must supply them with the
  162. same defense he is providing the Centauri. He balks, but they insist. He
  163. is only able to obtain the concession that they will give his ships the
  164. authority to intercept ships on their borders, and they will support his
  165. fleet in the event of a greater danger. Then they dismiss him. He is only
  166. able to contain his glee until he reaches the first lift.
  167. <p>
  168. Lennier regains consciousness only to tell Delenn that he smelled a leaking
  169. valve, but he denies the suggestion of warrior caste sabotage. As soon as
  170. she leaves, the religious leaders cluster around to ask him why he didn't
  171. tell her the truth. He explains that she lives in a world where everyone
  172. is better than they really are. When they thank him, he replies angrily,
  173. "I did it for her; I did not do it for you." Her faith in their goodness
  174. was more valuable to him than her knowledge of their weakness. And so they
  175. depart, deeply chastened.
  176. <br clear=all>
  177. <p>
  178. <img align=right width=128 height=96 alt="" src="/lurk/gif/079/betrayal.jpeg">
  179. The Voice of the Resistance announces the League's new border patrol
  180. initiative, and asks for news of the events on Minbar. Meanwhile, Neroon
  181. leaves the war cruiser stealthily. In his first message to his caste
  182. leader he announces with satisfaction that he possesses the religious
  183. caste's plans and victory is at hand.
