  2. <h3>Synopsis by Matthew Murray (mmurray@wsu.edu)</h3>
  3. <p>
  4. While Garibaldi and Zack Allen are walking down the corridor, Ivanova
  5. calls Garibaldi, telling him there is a code 7-R, and Garibaldi says he
  6. will be right there. Zack asks about the code, which he is unfamiliar
  7. with, but Garibaldi skirts the issue and leaves.

  9. <img align=right width=128 height=96 src="/lurk/gif/049/meeting.gif" alt="">
  10. He arrives at the meeting of the Babylon 5 war council where Delenn is
  11. talking about her ideas for the necessary gathering of new allies for
  12. the coming war. "Many times over the last million years," she
  13. explains, "the Shadows were fought to a standstill by the First Ones,
  14. races immeasurably older than our own. After the last war, a thousand
  15. years ago, we believe the First Ones went away forever, passing beyond
  16. the galactic rim where no human or Minbari has ever ventured. But the
  17. Vorlons remained. It is possible that some of the others may still be
  18. around." She explains that some had gone to rest where they would not
  19. be bothered, while still others walk among the stars on unknown
  20. errands. Marcus warns that the First Ones are very old, and possibly
  21. very dangerous, but Delenn says that they need all the help they can
  22. get. Since they must be found and contacted in person, Delenn has invited
  23. someone else to help: Draal. He approves of the idea, warning them
  24. that, though it may be extremely dangerous, it will definitely be
  25. "fun."
  26. <p>
  27. Draal explains that Epsilon 3 contains stores of information that may
  28. be helpful in locating the First Ones, though the information about the
  29. First Ones suggests no one approach their dwelling places. Sheridan
  30. agrees to go down to Epsilon 3, sort through the information, and
  31. discover how they can best proceed next.
  32. <p>
  33. Zack Allen meets Julie Musante, from the Ministry of Peace, in the
  34. docking bay. She explains that she will be on the station for a while,
  35. and would like her bags taken to appropriate quarters.
  36. <p>
  37. <img align=right width=128 height=96 src="/lurk/gif/049/newword.gif" alt="">
  38. G'Kar approaches Delenn while she shops at a kiosk, and asks how she
  39. and Minbar are doing. He expresses concern at the many closed meetings
  40. with Captain Sheridan she has been attending lately. She tries to
  41. explain it away, but when he asks what she knows about Rangers, she
  42. claims she knows nothing. G'Kar explains that his contacts speak of
  43. both human and Minbari Rangers, and she acknowledges that this does
  44. seem extremely unlikely. She leaves, but G'Kar promises to figure out
  45. this puzzle.<br clear=all>
  46. <p>
  47. <img align=right width=128 height=96 src="/lurk/gif/049/musante.gif" alt="">
  48. Sheridan arrives in his office, where Musante is waiting for him. She
  49. explains that she was assigned as a political officer for Babylon 5,
  50. since some of Sheridan's recent actions haven't been very politically
  51. astute, and that her position is to help Sheridan make decisions that
  52. reflect more favorably on the Earth government. Sheridan says that
  53. she isn't required on a military outpost, but Musante says that the
  54. station must answer to the demands of the Earth government. Sheridan
  55. refuses to share his authority with her, but she insists her job is
  56. merely to advise, and that the final decision has already been made.
  57. She sets up a dinner date with him to learn more about the station and
  58. recent events, and he tells her that, though he has a previous
  59. engagement, he will attend. He calls Ivanova at C&C and tells her that
  60. she will have to go to Epsilon 3 in his place.
  61. <p>
  62. Zack shows Musante to her quarters, and she explains that it will be
  63. his job to tell her everything she needs to know that Sheridan deigns
  64. not to tell her. Since he is a member of the Night Watch, he has
  65. priorities as well that must be fulfilled.
  66. <p>
  67. When Ivanova arrives on Epsilon 3, Draal is at first angered by the
  68. surprise, but she manages to convince him that surprises can be good
  69. things. He laughs, deciding he likes her, and ushers her further into
  70. the complex.
  71. <p>
  72. <img align=right width=128 height=96 src="/lurk/gif/049/dinner.gif" alt="">
  73. At dinner with Musante, Sheridan tries to convince her that the
  74. Centauri will continue to move in on the League of Non-Aligned Worlds,
  75. but Musante insists that Earth would never align with a hostile
  76. government. She tells Sheridan he should find ways to express these
  77. concerns without causing problems on Earth. She tells him that Earth
  78. has managed to solve most of its problems, since all of the trouble on
  79. Earth with poverty, the homeless, criminals, and prejudice are caused
  80. by those who refuse to work and those who are mentally unstable. She
  81. explains that, sometimes, the only way to deal with problems is to
  82. redefine them. Sheridan accuses her of ignoring the problems, but she
  83. says it isn't necessary to point out society's flaws to their leaders,
  84. and that anyone that does so is a troublemaker and unpatriotic. She
  85. says that these are examples of the things she wants to help Sheridan
  86. with, and that she only wants to help Earth and protect Babylon 5. She
  87. says that she doesn't want to see him hurt and that she could come to
  88. like him... quite a lot.<br clear=all>
  89. <p>
  90. <img align=right width=128 height=96 src="/lurk/gif/049/ivanmach.gif" alt="">
  91. Draal and Ivanova approach the matrix, where Draal's physical body
  92. rests within. The image of Draal vanishes, and he removes his body
  93. from the matrix. Ivanova puts hers in. He tells her to relax and open
  94. her mind. "But whatever you do, do not stray from the Path."
  95. <p>
  96. Ivanova finds herself travelling through the depths of space. "I can't
  97. breathe."
  98. <p>
  99. "It's all right," Draal tells her. "Try to calm your mind. Focus.
  100. All life forms are connected. Look for the Path. Look for the Path."
  101. <br clear=all>
  102. <p>
  103. <img align=right width=128 height=96 src="/lurk/gif/049/path.gif" alt="">
  104. "I see it," she says as a strange ribbon of blue begins to form before
  105. her eyes.
  106. <p>
  107. "It is the power that binds us, one to another, across the darkness of
  108. space. Focus on the First Ones, on the most ancient of ancients. Let
  109. the Path take you to them."
  110. <p>
  111. As Draal speaks, the Path becomes more and more solid and visible, and
  112. Ivanova begins her journey upon it. After a few moments, she arrives
  113. at a familiar planet. "I know this place... I've seen it on the star
  114. charts. Sigma 957. They were here. I can feel their footprints in
  115. the sand. Hear their words... whispered on the wind." She travels
  116. around the planet, seeing it from all sides, and it seems to change,
  117. some of it nearly vanishing into surrounding space, while other, more
  118. mysterious forms come to its surface. "It's beautiful. They're coming
  119. back again... soon. I can... Draal? Draal, something's wrong. Draal,
  120. I'm not alone." She looks away from the planet. It sees me. It knows
  121. I'm here. It... It's pulling me in. Can't stop it." In the fabric of
  122. space, four points of light, which look very much like eyes, begin to
  123. form and approach her.
  124. <p>
  125. "It is the enemy," Draal warns. Pull away! Go back to the Path!"
  126. <p>
  127. "I can't. It... It knows I'm here. It knows my name!"
  128. <p>
  129. "Break off! I can't pull you off without killing you. Pull away!
  130. Don't look at it!" Ivanova succeeds in looking away just as the
  131. fingers of light are about to reach her, while still others appear, as
  132. if they were reinforcements.
  133. <p>
  134. "That's it," Draal tells her as the image ends. "Come back now..."
  135. <p>
  136. "Wait... there's something else," Ivanova says as she finds herself in
  137. a new new place, orbiting Jupiter, over a year ago. "That's EarthForce
  138. 1 before it exploded! I can warn them! I can save the President!"
  139. <p>
  140. "No, it's too late. You're seeing the shadow of things long gone."
  141. <p>
  142. <img align=right width=128 height=96 src="/lurk/gif/049/clark.gif" alt="">
  143. The image freezes, and a new one appears, drenched in static. It is
  144. the form of Vice-President Clark, sitting at a desk. "I have wanted
  145. Santiago dead for so long," he says. "I wasn't sure we could really
  146. pull it off. You're sure it's done?"
  147. <p>
  148. Another voice, a deep male voice, that of Morden, responds.
  149. "EarthForce 1 will never return from Io. The power is now yours,
  150. Clark. Mr.... President."
  151. <p>
  152. This image vanishes in a sea of static, and Ivanova once again sees
  153. herself above Jupiter watching EarthForce 1 explode. She turns her
  154. head away, and the image ends. Draal helps her out of the machine.
  155. <p>
  156. "I do not understand! A normal human mind should not have been able to
  157. do that!"
  158. <p>
  159. "I saw it... I saw it all," she tells him. "The image I saw... the
  160. message. Can you record it?"
  161. <p>
  162. "Yes, but how..."
  163. <p>
  164. "Do it, please. It's the proof we've needed that President Santiago
  165. was assassinated, that Clark was behind everything. We've got it.
  166. We've got it."
  167. <p>
  168. <img align=right width=128 height=96 src="/lurk/gif/049/seduce.gif" alt="">
  169. Sheridan takes Musante into his quarters, where he fixes her a drink.
  170. While he is busy, she takes the opportunity to undress, and comes over
  171. to him. He tries to refuse her advances, but changes his mind and
  172. lunges into a deep kiss with her when an image of Ivanova appears. She
  173. soon vanishes when she sees what she interrupted, and Sheridan breaks
  174. out of the embrace. He quickly enters another room, where Ivanova is
  175. waiting. She tells him that she knows where the First Ones are, but
  176. they will have to hurry. He says he is occupied, but tells her to
  177. contact Garibaldi. She begins to tell him about Clark's message, but
  178. doesn't have time. Musante calls out to him, and Ivanova knows she has
  179. to leave. "Good luck, Captain. I think you're about to go where
  180. everyone has gone before." She vanishes just as Musante enters. Musante
  181. is quite perplexed when he hurries out again.
  182. <p>
  183. G'Kar approaches Garibaldi, asking where Ivanova is, and Garibaldi tells
  184. him that she was called away on urgent business. G'Kar prods Garibaldi
  185. further, but he won't say anything, which incenses G'Kar. He asks
  186. Garibaldi if what the Centauri have done has removed from him the
  187. respect he has earned, since he can't get a straight answer from
  188. anyone. G'Kar says that, though the two of them had never been
  189. friends, they had also never been strangers. Garibaldi says that he
  190. doesn't know anything that could help out him or the Narns. G'Kar
  191. tells him that perhaps he can help Garibaldi instead, and rushes off.
  192. <p>
  193. Zack approaches Musante, who is eating her breakfast. He asks how her
  194. meeting with Sheridan went. "When it comes to your union situation
  195. here," she tells Zack, "he must be a very good negotiator. I've never
  196. seen anyone come up with so many creative ways of saying 'no' to a
  197. simple proposition." Zack says that he prefers saying yes, but doesn't
  198. get much further. She tells him that she has called a meeting to go
  199. over political protocol, and that she expects him to be there. He
  200. leaves, but Garibaldi, sitting nearby, has seen the entire exchange.
  201. <p>
  202. Ivanova arrives on the bridge of the White Star, expecting to see
  203. Lennier, but finding Marcus instead. He explains that he speaks
  204. Minbari, and she tells him to set course for Sigma 957.
  205. <p>
  206. <img align=right width=128 height=96 src="/lurk/gif/049/nightwch.gif" alt="">
  207. Musante addresses the members of the Night Watch, telling them that,
  208. from this point on, it is no longer appropriate for EarthForce
  209. personnel to publically criticize the government or its decisions, and
  210. that Night Watch investigations have been expanded to include past
  211. associations. Several members of the Night Watch, including Zack, seem
  212. distressed by this, but she explains that, in the future, certain
  213. individuals in the government will be expelled under charges of
  214. sedition, spying for alien governments, and immoral conduct. "With our
  215. basic freedoms at stake, no response can be too extreme." She says
  216. that the "abridgements" of traditional rights are only temporary and that
  217. everyone will have to do their part to keep Earth "safe and
  218. ideologically pure."
  219. <p>
  220. <img align=right width=128 height=96 src="/lurk/gif/049/ships.gif" alt="">
  221. The White Star arrives at Sigma 957, finding nothing. Marcus tells Ivanova
  222. that there is nothing to do but wait, and that she should take time out
  223. for herself occasionally. Ivanova gets angry at him talking about her
  224. personal life, but is interrupted with a sensor beep. The space near
  225. Sigma 957 fills with a web of energy, from the center of which
  226. springs an enormous black vessel, with many strangely-shaped
  227. protusions, and covered in dancing lights of all colors. As the ship
  228. approaches, the White Star's energy begins to drain, and as they move
  229. away, a small stream of energy extends toward them. On the bridge, an
  230. image of one of the First Ones appears, and Ivanova tells it of their
  231. situation. Though it registers no comprehension of what she is saying,
  232. when she mentions that they have sided with the Vorlons, the figure is
  233. not happy. She asks for their help fighting the Shadows, but the image
  234. vanishes as the First Ones consider their decision.
  235. <p>
  236. Sheridan and Garibaldi watch the recording of Clark's transmission with
  237. Morden. Sheridan is excited that they finally have the proof they
  238. need, but Garibaldi asks what they can do with it, without raising too
  239. many questions. Sheridan says he will send it to General Hague, and
  240. with built-in security measures assuring the recording's validity, the
  241. evidence will finally put them where they need to be.
  242. <p>
  243. <img align=right width=128 height=96 src="/lurk/gif/049/zog.gif" alt="">
  244. The waiting continues, and eventually the First Ones reach their
  245. verdict: "Zog." When the ship begins to move away, Ivanvoa and Marcus
  246. interpret it to mean no. Ivanova insists that she will not let them
  247. leave until they agree to help, and a sarcastic comment from Marcus
  248. gives her an idea. She opens a comm channel and tells the First Ones
  249. that the Vorlons said that they wouldn't be up for a fight, and that they are
  250. not needed to help. "Come to think of it, we've got the Vorlons. We
  251. really don't need much more help, do we?" As she continues to praise
  252. the Vorlons, the First Ones become more and more angry. She promises
  253. to move away and let them know when the fighting is over. The First
  254. Ones seem to get more and more angry, but eventually the previous image
  255. of the First Ones reappears. "When it is time, come to this place.
  256. Call our name. We will be here." The ship vanishes, leaving the
  257. White Star alone.
  258. <p>
  259. Garibaldi and the rest of his security team watch an ISN broadcast
  260. about the release of evidence linking Clark to Santiago's death; the
  261. Senate is opening investigations. Garibaldi tells the team to try to keep
  262. everything under control, and says that Musante has been recalled to Earth.
  263. Zack especially is unable to grasp the idea of an assassination, but
  264. Garibaldi is in no mood to hear it, since he knows that Zack told her
  265. more than he should. He says that, after what happened earlier, it was
  266. a long time before he could trust anyone. Zack says that Garibaldi
  267. doesn't trust him, since code 7-R doesn't exist. Zack asks him what is
  268. really going on. "Night Watch says the only people who have to worry
  269. are the ones with something to hide," Zack says. Garibaldi asks
  270. him if he has a charge to make, but Zack says he doesn't, and that he's
  271. walking a tightrope, and that he doesn't know what to do. Zack
  272. leaves, telling Garibaldi not to talk to him for the rest of the day.
  273. <p>
  274. Ivanova reports the events of the mission to Sheridan, who tells her
  275. that they will need all the First Ones they can find. She asks about
  276. the situation with President Clark, and Sheridan tells her that
  277. everything is a mess, but the truth has been released.
  278. <p>
  279. Zack escorts Musante to the docking bay. She tells him that she
  280. doesn't expect to be gone very long and that this situation is exactly
  281. what she hoped to avoid. Zack asks her about code 7-R, but she tells
  282. him she never heard of it. She hears the boarding call for her ship,
  283. and says she needs to go, promising that they will find who is
  284. responsible and punish them.
  285. <p>
  286. <img align=right width=128 height=96 src="/lurk/gif/049/book.gif" alt="">
  287. Late at night, Garibaldi is asleep when he is awakened by his door
  288. chime. He groggily turns the lights up low, gets up, and answers the
  289. door, to find G'Kar there. "I told you I could help," he says,
  290. thrusting a large tome into Garibaldi's hands. "The Book of G'Quan.
  291. Read it. We'll talk afterward."
  292. <p>
  293. "I... I don't read Narn," Garibaldi protests.
  294. <p>
  295. "Learn!" G'kar says as he leaves hastily.
  296. <p>
  297. "He hates me," Garibaldi says to himself as he makes his way back to
  298. bed. "They all hate me. That's why they're doing this. To make...
  299. me... crazy." He flops onto his bed, issuing one last command before he
  300. goes to sleep. "Lights."
