  1. <h3>Synopsis by Matthew Murray (mmurray@wsu.edu)</h3>
  2. <p>
  3. While the station is being repaired, both inside and out, Sheridan goes
  4. to the rock garden, where he meets Ambassador Kosh. He tells Kosh
  5. that, ever since Kosh had saved his life the previous week, he hadn't
  6. thanked him
  7. properly, and that Kosh hadn't returned his calls. Sheridan asks Kosh
  8. if everything is all right.
  9. <p>
  10. "Being seen by so many at once was a great strain. I returned to my
  11. ship to rest. You have a question?" Kosh asks.
  12. <p>
  13. "Nobody knows it was you. Everyone saw something different, something
  14. from the legends of their own world. But it was still a terrible
  15. risk. After taking such...such care to hide what you really are, why
  16. take that chance?"
  17. <p>
  18. "It was...necessary."
  19. <p>
  20. "Well, as answers go: Short to the point, utterly useless, and totally
  21. consistent. What I've come to expect from a Vorlon."
  22. <p>
  23. "Good."
  24. <p>
  25. "You know... I just had a thought. You've been back and forth to your
  26. homeworld so many times since you got here, how do I know you're the
  27. same Vorlon? Inside that encounter suit, you could be anyone."
  28. <p>
  29. "I have always been here."
  30. <p>
  31. "Oh yeah? You said that about me too."
  32. <p>
  33. "Yes."
  34. <p>
  35. "I really hate it when you do that."
  36. <p>
  37. "Good," Kosh tells Sheridan as he leaves him alone in the garden.

  40. A large ship, piloted by a Drazi, blasts off from a planet, under
  41. constant fire from two orbiting stations. The ship flies toward the
  42. barrier around the planet, and manages to get through it, being
  43. slightly damaged in the process. After the ship breaks through the
  44. barrier, the pilot launches a smaller ship from it, which flies away,
  45. escaping just as the larger ship is destroyed. The smaller ship is fired upon
  46. and hit, but still able to make the jump to its pilot's destination:
  47. Babylon 5. In order to speed up the trip, the pilot orders all
  48. non-necessary life support power to the engines.
  49. <p>
  50. Sheridan tells Ivanova, who is with him in the docking bay, that he is
  51. tired of the unannounced visits of V.I.P's from Earth, since they are
  52. never given enough information. The man they are waiting for arrives
  53. and introduces himself as David Endawi, who asks that they go somewhere
  54. private, and that Ambassador Delenn join them.
  55. <p>
  56. Garibaldi brings the pilot of the small ship into the new Medlab
  57. facilities, and Franklin tells Garibaldi that he will have Dr. Sanchez do an
  58. examination, and inform him of the results. Garibaldi leaves, and
  59. Franklin examines the man, dressed in the uniform of a Ranger. He
  60. calls Sanchez to inform her he needs her help, but upon turning
  61. around, the Ranger is gone.
  62. <p>
  63. <img align=right width=128 height=96 src="/lurk/gif/045/mordbar.jpeg" alt="">
  64. Londo is sitting at a bar drinking when Morden arrives, per Londo's
  65. request. Londo tells Morden that he has been doing a great deal of
  66. thinking and now, that the Narn War is over, they should reconsider
  67. their relationship. He feels that the Centauri no longer need the help
  68. of Morden's associates. Morden asks Londo if he is being premature in
  69. his desire for them to disappear, since they might not know what lies
  70. ahead, but Londo tells him he is sure, and wants Morden and his
  71. associates to "go away." Morden agrees, telling him that he will meet
  72. Londo in his quarters later, after meeting with his associates, to
  73. discuss the dissolving of their partnership.
  74. <p>
  75. Sheridan, Ivanova, Delenn, and Endawi are in Sheridan's office when
  76. Endawi asks Delenn if, as a member of the older races, she has any
  77. information about the mysterious ship that Lt. Keffer recorded shortly
  78. before his death. Endawi asks what Keffer knew about the ship, and
  79. Sheridan and Ivanova insist they didn't know what he knew about it.
  80. Endawi explains that the ship is obviously from a highly advanced
  81. civilization, and that they are worried about the threat the ship might
  82. represent, and it is his job to gather information about it. Delenn
  83. apologizes to Endawi, but tells him she has never seen a ship
  84. of this type before. Endawi asks her if she's sure, but she insists she is.
  85. Endawi asks if
  86. a ship like this had entered Babylon 5 space, and Sheridan says no. Endawi
  87. asks for
  88. quarters to stay in until he has been able to talk to the
  89. other ambassadors, and Ivanova escorts him out. After they leave,
  90. Sheridan asks if the ship belongs to the Shadows, who Delenn had told him
  91. about several months earlier. Delenn acknowledges this, saying that it
  92. is important to convince the Shadows that they are unaware of the Shadow's but
  93. that she didn't lie: she had never actually seen on of their ships before.
  94. She says
  95. that Shadow ships are relentless and nigh invincible, but Sheridan
  96. doesn't believe it. She tells him that he will only feel that way
  97. until he sees what they can do. "Take a good look, John. That is the
  98. face of our enemy."
  99. <p>
  100. Lennier meets Delenn and tells her that someone is looking
  101. for her. When she tries to brush him off, Lennier changes her mind by
  102. presenting the
  103. badge of the man brought into Medlab, which Delenn recognizes immediately.
  104. <p>
  105. <img align=right width=128 height=96 src="/lurk/gif/045/lonendaw.jpeg" alt="">
  106. Endawi meets with Londo, and asks him what he knows about the ship from
  107. Keffer's recording. Londo tells Endawi that this is the ship he has seen in
  108. a dream
  109. where he is standing on Centauri Prime, with similar ships passing
  110. overhead, until their numbers grow so great, they blot out the sun. But,
  111. Londo says that's all he knows about the ship, and apologizes that he
  112. couldn't be of more help. Endawi thanks Londo, and leaves.
  113. <p>
  114. Delenn and Lennier, in disguise, venture into Downbelow and enter a
  115. tavern, where they sit down. The ranger comes up to them and gives
  116. them drinks, which they initially do not accept, but soon do in order
  117. to avoid drawing attention. Lennier tastes the drink and discovers it has no
  118. alcohol in it. The Ranger, who identifies himself as Marcus, says it
  119. proves he was waiting for them, since very few know of alcohol's
  120. effects on Minbari. Marcus tells Delenn he needs her help, but would
  121. prefer to discuss it in private. They leave the tavern, but are
  122. followed. They soon run into a group of thugs, who insist they give
  123. over their possessions. Marcus pulls out a Mimbari staff, and begins fighting
  124. the thugs. Delenn and Lennier join in, and the thieves are soon
  125. defeated. The three of them quickly run away.
  126. <p>
  127. <img align=right width=128 height=96 src="/lurk/gif/045/initiatv.jpeg" alt="">
  128. Ivanova enters Sheridan's office, where he, Garibaldi, Delenn, Lennier,
  129. and Marcus are already waiting for them. Sheridan tries to explain the
  130. Rangers to her, but she has already known about them for a long time.
  131. Marcus tells all of them that the he came from Zagros VII, a Drazi
  132. world, where there is a Ranger training camp, created partly for
  133. safety, and partly because certain Minbari are uncomfortable with
  134. the Rangers. Marcus explains that the planet was blockaded two weeks
  135. earlier by the Centauri and that he believes the Ranger camp is the target.
  136. He pleads for Sheridan to help the Rangers
  137. evacuate. Garibaldi says that they don't have the means for such an
  138. attack, since it would require a powerful warship and crew, but Marcus
  139. tells him they have the means, if Sheridan and the others have the will.
  140. Ivanova reminds Sheridan of Endawi, and Sheridan tells Garibaldi to take
  141. charge of him while the others prepare to go to Zagros VII. They soon
  142. board a shuttle, file a fake destination in the station's log, and
  143. they, and an accompanying Minbari flyer, head out.
  144. <p>
  145. Morden tells Londo that he wants to make sure that the Centauri are
  146. clear on the details of their separation. He brings up a map of the
  147. galaxy and draws a line on it, showing the quarter of it which the Centauri may
  148. conquer at will. As long as they don't trespass into the territory of
  149. Morden's associates,
  150. there won't be any problems. Londo asks how he can be sure that Morden's
  151. associates won't attack him, and Morden says he can't, but
  152. that they have what they want, and aren't concerned with the rest.
  153. Londo quickly agrees to Morden's conditions, but Morden tells him there is one
  154. more condition. There is one world, on the edge of the Centauri
  155. boundaries, that his associates want custody of, and he has already
  156. convinced Lord Refa to secure it until his associates can arrive. When
  157. Londo asks if he might be able to see the ships of Morden's associates one day,
  158. Morden tells Londo ominously to ensure no Centauri remain near Zagros VII
  159. when his associates get there.
  160. <p>
  161. The shuttle and the flyer pull out of hyperspace and arrive near a
  162. beautiful, strange, magnificent ship. "Her name," Marcus tells them, "is the
  163. White Star. And she's yours, Captain."
  164. <p>
  165. <img align=right width=128 height=96 src="/lurk/gif/045/know.jpeg" alt="">
  166. Endawi protests to Garibaldi that he was assured Sheridan and Ivanova
  167. were available, but with some quick double-talk, Garibaldi
  168. convinces Endawi that he isn't allowed to let himself know where they
  169. went. He suggests that Endawi talk to G'Kar unofficially, since the
  170. Centauri-Earth treaty prohibits official contact with the Narn.<br clear=all>
  171. <p>
  172. <img align=right width=128 height=96 src="/lurk/gif/045/engine.jpeg" alt="">
  173. As they explore the ship, Delenn explains that the White Star is a new
  174. type of Minbari warship--smaller and faster than normal, an amalgam of
  175. Minbari and Vorlon technology. It looks just different enough so that
  176. it cannot be identified. She takes them to the bridge, where the crew,
  177. consisting of members of the religious caste, busily prepares the ship
  178. for its mission. Sheridan tries to order them to Zagros VII, but
  179. Lennier says he must act as interpreter, since most of the crew isn't
  180. familiar with English. The ship blasts off toward Zagros VII.<br clear=all>
  181. <p>
  182. <img align=right width=128 height=96 src="/lurk/gif/045/gquanshd.jpeg" alt="">
  183. Endawi asks G'Kar if he knows anything about the mysterious ship.
  184. With an exclamation of relief G'Kar turns an opened Book of G'Quan
  185. toward Endawi, where there is a picture which bears a striking resemblance
  186. to the Shadow ship. "They came to our world over a thousand of your years ago,
  187. long before we went to the stars ourselves. They set up a base on one of our
  188. southern continents. They took little interest in us. G'Quan believed they
  189. were engaged in a war, far outside our own world."
  190. <p>
  191. "G'Quan?" Endawi asks.
  192. <p>
  193. "One of our greatest spiritual leaders. The Book of G'Quan is copied
  194. by hand from the original with every note and line precisely drawn.
  195. This ship and your ship are the same. I tried to warn the others that
  196. the ancient enemy was returning. But no one listened... Perhaps now
  197. they will."
  198. <p>
  199. "But if this is correct, why would they just disappear for a thousand
  200. years?"
  201. <p>
  202. "To all things, there is a time, Mr. Endawi. Perhaps this is theirs."
  203. <p>
  204. <img align=right width=128 height=96 src="/lurk/gif/045/bridge.jpeg" alt="">
  205. While on their way to Zagros VII, Ivanova asks how Marcus became a
  206. Ranger, and he explains it was because of his brother, who died trying
  207. to warn him about a Shadow attack on the mining colony where he was working.
  208. Marcus promised his brother he would carry on the mission. The White
  209. Star comes out of hyperspace, near Zagros VII, and approaches the
  210. planet. They call the Rangers and tell them to be ready to escape.
  211. The White Star destroys the mines and stations around the planet, but
  212. too easily. Sheridan can't believe there wouldn't be a
  213. Centauri warship guarding it, and asks Lennier if the scanners are
  214. working properly. To prove they are, Lennier shows him, displaying
  215. more of the White Star's unique abilities. Ivanova detects a
  216. disturbance, and they put it up on the screen. It is the ship they all
  217. saw from Lt. Keffer's flight recorder: A Shadow ship.
  218. <p>
  219. Sheridan declares that the Shadows must have come for the Rangers who he
  220. promises not to abandon. Delenn insists they aren't yet ready to fight, but
  221. they aren't given much of a choice when the Shadow ship attacks. The White Star
  222. manage to maneuver out of the way of its attack, which shocks Delenn,
  223. since the Shadows never miss. After they clear the last mine blockading
  224. the Rangers, they tell the Rangers to clear out. Sheridan tells Lennier
  225. to proceed to the jumpgate since the Shadows won't suspect that the
  226. White Star can open a jump point because of its small size, and he wants to
  227. keep every advantage he can. Delenn says the ship will follow them
  228. wherever they go, and Sheridan says he's counting on it. The White
  229. Star enters the jumpgate, with the Shadow ship following close behind.
  230. <p>
  231. <img align=right width=128 height=96 src="/lurk/gif/045/shadgate.jpeg" alt="">
  232. Delenn pleads with Sheridan to call for help. They don't have any
  233. chance of destroying the ship alone, since it is so much bigger than they
  234. are. Alluding to the Black Star Sheridan tells her that he has heard that
  235. before.
  236. As they continue through hyperspace, Sheridan asks Ivanova what would happen if
  237. they were to open a jump point while inside a jumpgate, and Ivanova
  238. explains that it would be suicide: the energy released would be too
  239. great to escape from. Sheridan asks Lennier if the White Star is
  240. quick enough to escape, and Lennier says he doesn't know. Sheridan says
  241. that they are probably near sector 45, and that they should use that
  242. gate to try the maneuver. It is the jumpgate near the Markab
  243. homeworld, which other races have been using the strip the planet
  244. bare. The White Star opens the jumpgate, while activating her jump engines.
  245. Just as the point forms, the White Star escapes the jumpgate which explodes
  246. in a
  247. fierce burst of energy, which damages the White Star, but destroys the
  248. tailing Shadow
  249. ship.
  250. <p>
  251. The original shuttle and Minbari flyer arrive back on Babylon 5 to be
  252. met by Mr. Endawi, who demands to know why they lied about where they
  253. were going and what they were doing. Sheridan and Delenn say that they
  254. had to tow a Minbari diplomatic shuttle to a nearby jumpgate. They
  255. apologize, but Endawi is on his way back to Earth. He tells them he
  256. has all the information he needs, and that he will send a copy of the report.
  257. <p>
  258. <img align=right width=128 height=96 src="/lurk/gif/045/earthdom.jpeg" alt="">
  259. Back on Earth, Endawi presents his information to a senator in Earth
  260. Dome, telling her what he found, though he reached nothing conclusive.
  261. She tells him that she will inform him of what they find. Soon after
  262. he leaves, two other men come into her office. One of them is Morden,
  263. and the other is a Psi Cop. She tells them that there is
  264. little information, and that the ship is a complete mystery to everyone
  265. on Babylon 5 except legends. Morden suggests that the Earth government
  266. dismiss it as an isolated incident, but the telepath disagrees, saying that a
  267. threat to planetary security could be useful in speeding up the program at
  268. home. Intrigued, Morden asks him to explain.<br clear=all>
  269. <p>
  270. <img align=right width=128 height=96 src="/lurk/gif/045/warroom.jpeg" alt="">
  271. Sheridan, Ivanova, Garibaldi, Franklin, Delenn, and Marcus sit around a
  272. large table while Sheridan outlines his plan for a War Council: Whatever anyone
  273. learns they will share every two weeks, in hopes that together they can achieve
  274. more than they can working separately. Sheridan tells them that they
  275. can say anything they like during these meetings.
  276. <p>
  277. Franklin says, "Well, then, I have a question. Granted, I am stuck in
  278. Medlab most of the time, and granted, I'm usually the last to know
  279. anything around here, and granted, we've all been pretty busy lately,
  280. but could someone please tell me what the hell these Shadows are?"
  281. <p>
  282. Sheridan indicates to Delenn that she should explain, which she does.
  283. "There are beings in the universe billions of years older than any of
  284. our races. They walked among the stars like giants, vast and
  285. timeless. They created great empires, taught the new races, explored
  286. beyond the Rim... The oldest of the Ancients are the Shadows. We have
  287. no other name for them..."
