  1. <h3>Synopsis by Matthew Murray (mmurray@wsu.edu)</h3>
  2. <p>
  3. Captain Sheridan is out helping to train Zeta Squadron against the
  4. Centauri, should the need to fight them ever arise. One of the other
  5. pilots is able
  6. to shoot Lt. Keffer quite easily, and is about ready to start
  7. again when Sheridan receives a call from Ivanova saying there's an
  8. emergency on Babylon 5. Sheridan orders Zeta Squadron to continue
  9. practicing the maneuvers and returns to the station.
  10. <p>
  11. Lennier enters the Zocalo where he finds Vir sitting there, nursing a
  12. drink. Lennier sits down next to him and says to Vir, "Sometimes I get
  13. so close, and yet it seems I'm shut out of the important things."
  14. <p>
  15. <img align=right width=128 height=96 src="/lurk/gif/044/nervous.gif" alt="">
  16. "It's a useless feeling," Vir replies. "The ambassador is definitely
  17. going through some changes. He even looks different."
  18. <p>
  19. "Indeed, and now with the military starting to stampede over everyone
  20. and everything..."
  21. <p>
  22. "The coming and going and secret meetings..."
  23. <p>
  24. "You never know what it's all about, until later, when it's too late."
  25. <p>
  26. "They never listen to us."
  27. <p>
  28. "It makes me nervous," they both say at once.
  29. <p>
  30. "Same time tomorrow?" Vir asks.
  31. <p>
  32. "Sure," Lennier replies as he leaves.<br clear=all>
  33. <p>
  34. Sheridan meets up with Ivanova who tells him that the Drazi and
  35. Pak'ma'ra ambassadors are waiting for him in his office with an urgent
  36. matter to discuss. Sheridan orders that all the fighter squads be put
  37. through extensive training so they will be ready to fight if
  38. necessary.
  39. <p>
  40. <img align=right width=128 height=96 src="/lurk/gif/044/soon.gif" alt="">
  41. Ivanova asks the Pak'ma'ra ambassador if he is certain that he is
  42. correct, and he assures her that he is. The Drazi ambasador explains
  43. that the Centauri have invaded both of their territories, taken command
  44. of listening posts, and are preparing to attack other races and other
  45. worlds. "War is spreading," the Drazi says. "Perhaps soon they even
  46. attack you."
  47. <p>
  48. Sheridan paces back and forth in his office as Ivanova arrives with
  49. Londo. The conversation is very tense as they discuss the movement of
  50. the Centauri forces. Sheridan asks why what the Centauri did to the Narn
  51. wasn't enough, but Londo insists that they are merely trying to
  52. stabalize the region, using the conquered worlds as a buffer zone,
  53. though the Drazi and Pak'ma'ra don't agree. Londo says his people merely
  54. want to establish a presence, and Sheridan demands to know where it
  55. will end. He tries to convince Londo that the Centauri are at the center
  56. of the trouble, but Londo refuses to listen. He warns Sheridan not to
  57. overstep his authority, which ends at Babylon 5.
  58. <p>
  59. Garibaldi tells Sheridan that Londo has been acting very differently,
  60. and that he can no longer be talked to or reasoned with. Sheridan asks
  61. Garibaldi how to get through to Londo, but Garibaldi says it can't be
  62. done as long as Londo is afraid, and that he isn't able to keep up with
  63. the climactic changes occurring all around him. Sheridan says that he
  64. made a full report to Earthdome, and with the new races involved, Earth
  65. can no longer ignore the problem. Ivanova calls Sheridan and tells him
  66. that Frederick Lantz, from the Ministry of Peace, has just arrived on
  67. the station, and Sheridan leaves to see him.
  68. <p>
  69. As Keffer and a fellow officer finish their training, they both admit
  70. that they are very tired and wish they knew what was going on with
  71. Sheridan. The officer suggests it might be the "ghost"--something
  72. several other officers say in hyperspace while returning from sector
  73. 14. She explains that they said it looked like a cross between "a
  74. spider and your worst nightmare."<br clear=all>
  75. <p>
  76. <img align=right width=128 height=96 src="/lurk/gif/044/arrival.gif" alt="">
  77. Sheridan meets up with Lantz, who introduces him to Mr. Welles, the man
  78. in charge of the Nightwatch. Sheridan introduces them to Ivanova, and
  79. Lantz tells Sheridan that he wants to interview Londo and the
  80. ambassadors of the worlds affected by the Centauri expansion. Mr.
  81. Welles says that he wants to speak with the members of the Nightwatch
  82. aboard Babylon 5. Ivanova tells them that she can't believe they came
  83. to Babylon 5 -- she never thought they would. Lantz explains that
  84. Earth can't sit still forever, but it
  85. is good to know firsthand whether they're about to make the right choice.
  86. <p>
  87. Keffer meets up with another pilot in the Zocalo and asks him about the
  88. ghost he saw. The officer, Mitch, tries to avoid the subject, but
  89. Keffer is able to provide a flawless description of the ship, telling
  90. him that he saw it as well, but that he wasn't able to record it or get
  91. any other information about it. Mitch tries to convince Keffer that he
  92. shouldn't try to search for it again.<br clear=all>
  93. <p>
  94. <img align=right width=160 height=120 src="/lurk/gif/044/044-1.gif" alt="">
  95. While discussing the situation with the Drazi and the Pak'ma'ra and
  96. other tidbits of information about Earth with Ivanova,
  97. Lantz explains that he wants
  98. to leave his grandchildren a good legacy, and that is what he hopes to
  99. accomplish by working for the Ministry of Peace.
  100. <p>
  101. On C&C, a jump point is detected opening up on the other side of
  102. Epsilon 3, where it can only be detected by Babylon 5. It turns out to
  103. be a Narn war cruiser, which hails them. The captain tells Sheridan that,
  104. when the Centauri attacked the homeworld, his ship was on a deep-space
  105. assignment, but that he hopes that they can help liberate the
  106. homeworld again, and to do that, they need the help and sanctuary of
  107. Babylon 5.<br clear>
  108. <p>
  109. <img align=right width=128 height=96 src="/lurk/gif/044/tea.gif" alt="">
  110. Ivanova is just about to eat when Mr. Welles enters and asks to speak
  111. with her. He asks her if she is happy, and she tells him that she
  112. supposes she is. He says he likes to know as much as possible about
  113. the people he works with, and that her record is exemplary, and asks
  114. what her plans for the future are. She says she's happy on Babylon 5
  115. for now, but isn't sure what the future holds for her; she may
  116. like to captain a starship. Welles tells her that, with the help of
  117. the Nightwatch, she can get her ship years earlier than she otherwise
  118. might, and he offers to pull
  119. some strings for her if she will help them discover disloyal people and
  120. potentially dangerous problems forming on Babylon 5. She tells him
  121. that she has learned all about the Nightwatch, and was worried
  122. about what she learned, and that she has no intention of violating her
  123. personal beliefs to advance her career.
  124. <p>
  125. Sheridan informs G'Kar about the Narn war ship, and says that it is
  126. safe for the time being. G'Kar is happy about the news, and glad that
  127. Sheridan plans to give them sanctuary. Sheridan tells G'Kar about
  128. Lantz's visit; G'Kar is delighted to hear that Earth is prepared to
  129. take sides, and rushes off to try to meet with Lantz.<br clear>
  130. <p>
  131. <img align=right width=128 height=96 src="/lurk/gif/044/report.gif" alt="">
  132. Mr. Welles addresses the Nightwatch members aboard Babylon 5 and is
  133. pleased with their progress, except that of Zack Allan, who hasn't been
  134. reporting much, such as a shopkeeper's vocal complaints about new import
  135. regulations. Zack tries to defend himself saying that he didn't see
  136. anything wrong with such talk, but Welles disagrees, saying that this
  137. is precisely the kind of thing they should be informed of. He tells Zack to be
  138. extremely careful about anything suspicious, no matter how innocent it
  139. may seem. Zack is still very uncomfortable about the situation, but
  140. admits that the reports about the shopkeeper
  141. are true. Welles is pleased by this, and tells Zack that he shows
  142. great promise.
  143. <p>
  144. Mitch goes to Keffer and gives him a data crystal containing
  145. information about sensor readings of the Shadow ship that may help
  146. Keffer locate it. Mitch warns him that he may be risking his own life
  147. by searching for the ship, and that he no longer wants any part of the
  148. mysterious vessel.<br clear>
  149. <p>
  150. <img align=right width=128 height=96 src="/lurk/gif/044/snub.gif" alt="">
  151. Lantz finishes meeting with the last ambassador of the League of
  152. Non-Aligned worlds and prepares to meet with Londo when G'Kar arrives,
  153. asking for five minutes of his time. Lantz refuses, though G'Kar does
  154. his best to convince him otherwise.
  155. <p>
  156. The captain of the Narn ship tells Sheridan that the repairs are going
  157. slowly due to lack of power.
  158. Sheridan suggests shutting down the jump engines so they can use the
  159. extra energy to assist in repairs, and Sheridan assures the captain
  160. that Babylon 5 will protect them. Lantz arrives at C&C and asks Sheridan
  161. about conducting fighter exercises against Centauri combat models.
  162. Sheridan tells him that it is true, and Lantz orders him to stop with
  163. the drills. Lantz also informs them that he has been authorized by
  164. Earth to sign a non-aggression treaty with the Centauri, forming an
  165. Earth-Centauri alliance to keep Earth safe. "We will, at
  166. last, know peace in our time," Lantz says.
  167. <p>
  168. As Welles walks down the corridor, he is approached by a technician
  169. from C&C who was unable to attend the meeting. She does, however, have
  170. other information for him.
  171. <p>
  172. <img align=right width=128 height=96 src="/lurk/gif/044/shrapnel.gif" alt="">
  173. Sheridan can't believe the idea of the non-aggression treaty, and
  174. Ivanova agrees; it protects Earth and leaves
  175. the Centauri free to attack other worlds. Sheridan tells Ivanova that
  176. he no longer feels as proud to be in Earth Force as he once did, and
  177. Ivanova tells him that, as 2260 is nearly upon them, it may be a year
  178. to make the uniform mean something again. She presents him with a
  179. small wrapped present, for Christmas or Hannukah. He opens it up and
  180. finds a piece of metal inside that he doesn't recognize. She tells him
  181. that she located a piece of the Black Star and wanted to give it to him
  182. as a reminder that sometimes it is possible to achieve something others
  183. believe can't be done. Londo calls Sheridan and tells him that he
  184. has learned that Babylon 5 is hiding a Narn warship and orders the ship
  185. and crew turned over to the Centauri. Sheridan ends the transmission
  186. and wants to know how Londo found out about it, and Ivanova suggests it
  187. was the Nightwatch that was responsible. The two of them rush
  188. back to C&C.
  189. <p>
  190. Sheridan orders a channel opened up to the Narn ship and tells the
  191. captain that the Centauri know they are there.
  192. A jump point opens and a Centauri battle cruiser
  193. arrives, blocking the Narn ship from fleeing through Babylon 5's jump gate.
  194. Sheridan, who promised G'Kar he'd do whatever he could, sends out Zeta
  195. Squadron to escort the Narn ship. Lantz arrives at C&C and asks
  196. Sheridan to explain his actions. Sheridan tells him that he promised
  197. Sanctuary to the Narn ship and will do whatever he can to keep that promise.
  198. Lantz tries to protest Sheridan's actions, but Sheridan has him taken
  199. out of C&C as Zeta Squadron launches. He opens up a line with Londo
  200. and tells him that the Narn ship will be granted free passage.
  201. Sheridan tells Londo that, if the
  202. Centauri opens fire on the Starfuries, Babylon 5 will respond with
  203. deadly force. He sends a copy of the transmission to the Centauri
  204. cruiser and orders the defense grid activated.<br clear=all>
  205. <p>
  206. <img align=right width=128 height=96 src="/lurk/gif/044/slice.gif" alt="">
  207. With the Starfuries in position, the Narn ship begins to move toward
  208. the jumpgate. The Centauri cruiser changes its position, opens its gun
  209. ports, and targets the Narn ship, Zeta Squadron, and Babylon 5 itself.
  210. Sheridan targets the Centauri warship and tells Keffer to fire if fired
  211. upon. The Centauri lock onto Babylon 5, but Sheridan refuses to fire
  212. until the Centauri do, which happens after only a few seconds.
  213. Sheridan fires interceptor shots and continues to defend Babylon 5
  214. and the Narn ship as it is escorted toward the jump point. Babylon 5
  215. is hit a couple of times, and Sheridan orders all weapons fired
  216. on the Centauri ship. The Narn ship
  217. makes it through the jump point; the Centauri ship, severely damaged
  218. by the station's attack, explodes.
  219. <p>
  220. Lantz tells Sheridan that the Centauri are extremely upset over
  221. Sheridan's actions, and despite the fact that morally and legally
  222. Sheridan made the correct choice, Lantz refuses to accept Sheridan's
  223. actions. Lantz tells Sheridan that the Centauri have accused them of
  224. moving out of neutrality and into a pro-Narn position. Welles tells
  225. Lantz and Sheridan that the joint chiefs agreed with Sheridan's
  226. actions, which were in accordance with Earth Force regulations, though,
  227. had Sheridan informed them of the Narn warship earlier, things may have
  228. turned out differently. Lantz tells
  229. Sheridan that the Centauri are willing to drop the entire thing if
  230. Sheridan apologizes. Sheridan is outraged at this, though Welles tells
  231. him that he has been ordered by the president himself, and that, should
  232. Sheridan go against those orders, he would be removed from command of Babylon
  233. 5. Welles explains that a meeting among all the ambassadors has been
  234. set up in the Zen Garden.
  235. <p>
  236. Zeta Squadron sticks with the Narn warship until Keffer's ship's
  237. computer informs him that there is an elevation in neutrino levels -- one
  238. of the signals from Mitch's data crystal. Sending the rest of
  239. the squadron and the Narn ship on ahead, Keffer breaks off to
  240. investigate.
  241. <p>
  242. Sheridan, in his dress uniform, practices his apology. "I
  243. apologize. I'm sorry. I'm sorry we had to defend ourselves against an
  244. unwarranted attack. I'm sorry that your crew was stupid enough to fire
  245. on a station filled with a quarter million civilians, including your
  246. own people. And I'm sorry I waited as long as I did before I blew them
  247. all straight to hell. As with everything else," he muses, "it's the
  248. thought that counts." He leaves to go make the speech.
  249. <p>
  250. Keffer,
  251. following the computer signals, finally spies the Shadow ship and
  252. orders the computer to begin recording.<br clear=all>
  253. <p>
  254. <img align=right width=128 height=96 src="/lurk/gif/044/pursuers.gif" alt="">
  255. All the ambassadors and their assistants have gathered in the Zen
  256. garden, waiting for Sheridan's speech as Sheridan makes his way there.
  257. As he approaches the transport tube, he is noticed by two young
  258. Centauri. In the garden, Ivanova notices that G'Kar has arrived. She
  259. tells him that he shouldn't be there, and he tells her that he has come
  260. to speak on Sheridan's behalf, and that the League of Non-Aligned
  261. Worlds may listen to him. Delenn and Kosh move off together to talk
  262. in private.
  263. <p>
  264. Keffer is scanned by the Shadow ship. He orders
  265. the computer to attach a homing beacon and eject the system record.
  266. The beacon has barely had time to leave the ship when the Shadow vessel
  267. turns toward Keffer, and he is enveloped, screaming, in a blinding
  268. white light.<br clear=all>
  269. <p>
  270. <img align=right width=128 height=96 src="/lurk/gif/044/fall1.gif" alt="">
  271. Sheridan enters the transport tube and finds a place to sit down for
  272. the trip. When the car arrives at the second transport station,
  273. everyone except Sheridan leaves the car. When the car recommences its
  274. motion, Sheridan hears a strange noise and notices that an explosive
  275. device has been placed on a seat nearby and is nearly ready to
  276. explode. Sheridan orders the computer to override and open the shuttle
  277. doors. He springs out the door and the car explodes behind him.
  278. <p>
  279. The explosion -- and the rapidly falling Sheridan -- capture the attention
  280. of those in the Garden below, but
  281. there is very little time. "In Valen's name!" Delenn says.
  282. <p>
  283. "Oh my God!" Ivanova exclaims. "Emergency alert. We've got an
  284. explosion in the core shuttle. We need rescue jetpacks and we need 'em
  285. now."
  286. <p>
  287. "What are you trying to do?" G'Kar asks.
  288. <p>
  289. "He's more or less weightless," Ivanova explains. "But the ground is
  290. rotating at sixty miles an hour. If we can't catch him, he'll be
  291. killed by the impact."
  292. <p>
  293. "You won't have time!" G'Kar offers.
  294. <p>
  295. Delenn turns to Kosh, standing by her in a deserted section of the
  296. garden. "Kosh, you know what's at stake. If you are going to do
  297. anything, you must do it now!" The headpiece of Kosh's encounter suit
  298. opens up, a brilliant blue light shining from within.
  299. <p>
  300. Sheridan continues to fall as Ivanova receives another communication,
  301. saying that the rescue team can't get there for two minutes. Ivanova
  302. tries to get them to hurry, since they have only thirty seconds.<br clear=all>
  303. <p>
  304. <img align=right width=128 height=96 src="/lurk/gif/044/kosh1.gif" alt="">
  305. Delenn looks up at Kosh as he emerges from his encounter suit. As Kosh
  306. soars into the air, she recognizes him as a tall, winged Minbari, the
  307. bone on his head carved into the shape of a crown. He is glowing with
  308. white and yellow light as he flies toward Sheridan.
  309. <p>
  310. Lennier also recognizes him instantly. "Valeria!" he exclaims.
  311. <p>
  312. The Drazi ambassador sees Kosh as well, but sees him differently.
  313. "Droshalla," he shouts out as he sees a light
  314. ensconced Drazi rise into the air on her wings.<br clear=all>
  315. <p>
  316. <img align=right width=128 height=96 src="/lurk/gif/044/kosh3.gif" alt="">
  317. "G'Lan," G'Kar says breathlessly, referring to the Narn clad in pure
  318. white who is flying up to Sheridan to rescue him.
  319. <p>
  320. Londo looks up as well, puzzled.<br clear=all>
  321. <p>
  322. <img align=right width=128 height=96 src="/lurk/gif/044/kosh5.gif" alt="">
  323. As Sheridan falls, he too sees something different. A human male, clad
  324. all in white, and outlined by a warm yellow glow against his wings,
  325. holds his hands out to Sheridan, who grasps them. The figure,
  326. appearing as an angel to Sheridan, helps him to the ground, again in
  327. the secluded part of the garden. When he arrives, Sheridan is
  328. astounded. "Kosh?" he asks. The figure nods.
  329. <p>
  330. Delenn enters Sheridan's quarters. She was worried about him, but
  331. Sheridan says he is fine. "The whole station's talking about what
  332. happened. Every race that was in the garden saw something different...
  333. yet the same. A being of light."
  334. <p>
  335. "Yes," Delenn affirms. "Each according to his or her type."
  336. <p>
  337. "But it was Kosh, wasn't it?" Sheridan asks Delenn, and she nods.
  338. "That's what he meant when he said that if he left his encounter suit,
  339. he'd be recognized by... everybody," Sheridan concludes.
  340. <p>
  341. "For millions of years, the Vorlons have visited other worlds, guided
  342. them and..."
  343. <p>
  344. "Manipulated us? Programmed us so that... when we saw them, we would
  345. react the right way?"
  346. <p>
  347. "It is, as you say, a matter of perspective," Delenn tells Sheridan
  348. solemnly. "What matters is that he has revealed himself to those who
  349. understand--you, me... and those who have been watching. The Shadows
  350. will know what Kosh has done. They will worry, afraid that he would
  351. not reveal himself unless the Vorlons were prepared to stand against
  352. them."
  353. <p>
  354. "Are they?"
  355. <p>
  356. "I do not think so. But as long as the Shadows believe the rest of us
  357. are unaware of their existence, we have time to prepare."
  358. <p>
  359. "Well, let's just hope that nobody find out about them until..."
  360. Sheridan is interrupted by a call from Ivanova saying that Zeta
  361. Squadron has returned, but Keffer has not.
  362. <p>
  363. In the Zocalo, a Narn and Drazi both describe what they saw in the
  364. garden. The Narn leaves, but the Drazi asks Londo, sitting nearby,
  365. what he saw. "Nothing," Londo replies. "I saw... nothing." He turns
  366. and leaves.
  367. <p>
  368. Londo shouts angrily in the council chamber as Ivanova, in voiceover,
  369. explains.
  370. "It was the end
  371. of the Earth year 2259, and the war was upon us. As anticipated, a few
  372. days after the Earth-Centauri treaty was announced, the Centauri
  373. widened their war to include many of the Non-Aligned Worlds. And there
  374. was another war brewing closer to home, a personal one whose cost would
  375. be higher than any of us could imagine."
  376. The shopkeeper Zack informed on is forced out of his shop, closed by
  377. the Ministry of Peace "pending
  378. allegations of sedition." Ivanova, in her quarters, silently and solemnly
  379. lights her menorah. "We came to this place because
  380. Babylon 5 was our last, best hope for peace. By the end of 2259, we
  381. knew that it had failed. But in so doing, it became something
  382. greater. As the war expanded, it became our last best hope... for
  383. victory. Because sometimes, peace is another word for surrender. And
  384. because secrets have a way of getting out."
  385. <p>
  386. <img align=right width=128 height=96 src="/lurk/gif/044/shadow.gif" alt="">
  387. The image of the Shadow ship, seen from the beacon Keffer sent out
  388. appears as an announcer explains. "When our ship
  389. encountered a distress beacon attached to an EarthForce recording
  390. device, these images, released exclusively to ISN, were found on that
  391. recording. Strategic analysts in EarthDome have indicated they don't
  392. know who this new race might be... but promised to find out." The
  393. Shadow vessel turns toward the camera and fires, reducing the image to
  394. static.
