  2. At C&C, Ivanova delivers a message to Sheridan from Captain Maynard of
  3. the Cortez. The Cortez is coming to Babylon 5 to pick up supplies.
  4. Ivanova notices that they are asking for a lot of supplies, and
  5. Sheridan explains that it is because they have been travelling for five
  6. years. The Cortez is an Explorer ship, a rare sight for most people
  7. since such ships are nearly always out mapping the edges of known space.
  8. Sheridan is informed
  9. that the ship is coming through the jumpgate, and everyone is amazed by
  10. it; it's nearly as long as Babylon 5 itself. Sheridan tells
  11. everyone at C&C to take a good look.
  12. <p>

  15. <p>
  16. Sheridan and Captain Jack Maynard of the Cortez spend some time getting
  17. reacquainted. Maynard talks about some of the mapping he did on the
  18. rim, and says that he returned to fix one of the Euphrates jump gates
  19. and to resupply.
  20. <p>
  21. Delenn approaches them, and Sheridan introduces the
  22. two. Delenn makes a request to convene the council to discuss the
  23. problems in sector 19, and Sheridan agrees to do so. Maynard is
  24. confused about Delenn's apperance, not understanding how a Minbari can
  25. look so unusual.
  26. <p>
  27. "There's the story she told us," Sheridan explains, "but
  28. then the Minbari never tell you the whole truth."
  29. <p>
  30. Maynard agrees.
  31. They talk about Babylon 5, and Sheridan talks about how busy the job is
  32. keeping him. Maynard says that he never thought Sheridan would accept
  33. such an assignment.
  34. <p>
  35. Garibaldi is in MedLab, being examined by Dr. Franklin. Garibaldi says
  36. that he appreciates Franklin's help, but eats whatever he wants
  37. whenever he wants, and as much as he chooses. Dr. Franklin says that
  38. Garibaldi can no longer do that, as he is iron-deficient and has high
  39. blood pressure. Dr. Franklin says that, to remedy the situation,
  40. Garibaldi needs to be put on a restricted diet. Garibaldi objects,
  41. saying that it is almost time for him to make Bagna Cauda, an Italian
  42. fondue that contains olive oil, garlic, butter, anchovies, and other
  43. ingredients, but Franklin says he shouldn't have it, and that he should stay
  44. away from salt and bread especially. Garibaldi says that, without
  45. those things, he can't make Bagna Cauda. Dr. Franklin still won't
  46. allow Garibaldi to eat it, and gives him a list of other things he
  47. shouldn't eat. Garibaldi looks at the list and is angered that most of
  48. his favorite foods are there.
  49. <p>
  50. <img align=middle width=128 height=96
  51. src="/lurk/gif/026/diet.gif"> Unpleasant diet plan.
  52. <p>
  53. Dr. Franklin says that he is serious and that this gives him
  54. the opportunity to call in the ranking officers for a nutritional
  55. profile, as they probably all have poor eating habits.
  56. <p>
  57. Sheridan tells Maynard about his first day on Babylon 5, regarding the
  58. Narns and Centauri, the Vorlons, the Minbari's feelings toward him, and
  59. Delenn's chrysalis. Sheridan says he is handling things one day at a
  60. time. Maynard says that he never imagined Sheridan would be on the
  61. station. He wonders why the President would choose someone the Minbari
  62. didn't like. He also wonders how Sheridan is doing, since this job was
  63. not what he was trained for. Sheridan says that he can make a
  64. difference on Babylon 5, and that doing that is important. Maynard doesn't
  65. understand how Sheridan could be satisfied with a desk job, but
  66. Sheridan says, "Well, it's a hell of a desk to be tied to."
  67. <p>
  68. <img align=middle width=150 height=112
  69. src="/lurk/gif/026/toast.gif"> Toasting Sheridan's desk job.
  70. <p>
  71. Garibaldi reports to Sheridan about a recent wave of shoplifting cases.
  72. Sheridan is upset that Garibaldi
  73. would come to him with such a minor problem. He says that he is sure
  74. Garibaldi can handle the problem, and expects a full report as soon as
  75. the guilty parties are apprehended. Garibaldi thought that Sheridan
  76. wanted to know everything that happened on the station. Sheridan says
  77. he wants to know everything important that happens, but wants Garibaldi
  78. to take care of the details.
  79. <p>
  80. Sheridan, Ivanova, Warren Keffer, and the leader of Zeta Squadron are
  81. in the officer's lounge, listening to some of Captain Maynard's stories
  82. about the rim. Maynard says he wants to hear their stories, but the
  83. others say that his stories are more interesting. Keffer asks Maynard
  84. where he is headed next, and Maynard says that he is going back to the
  85. rim to build jump gates so the area can be explored. Ivanova asks
  86. about Maynard's experiences in hyperspace, but Maynard is unsure what
  87. she means. Keffer tells Maynard about the Universe Today article a few
  88. months earlier asking if something was living in hyperspace. Maynard
  89. isn't sure about the answer to that, but does say that he has seen
  90. something out there, and that it is "stranger than any one of us can
  91. imagine."
  92. <p>
  93. Sheridan escorts Maynard back to his quarters, and asks if his comments
  94. about hyperspace were true, or if he made it up. Maynard says that
  95. they were true. "Well," he continues, "it wasn't in hyperspace,
  96. though. But you know, things can get kind of weird out on the rim,
  97. too. It's funny. You never know what you're going to find when you
  98. look over the edge of what's known and into what's not. We were in
  99. sector 857. I took my nav officer, Lietuenant Patrick, with me for a
  100. look around in one of our scout ships. Well, I noticed that we'd
  101. gotten out of sight of the Cortez, and I was, I was just about ready to
  102. turn back when I saw something. It was maybe a thousand kilometers
  103. away--black against space. Now, the reason that I knew it was there is
  104. that it blotted out the stars behind it. I don't know the exact shape
  105. of it, but...it was big. I turned to Pat, to ask him if he could see
  106. it, and when I looked back, it had vanished."
  107. <p>
  108. Sheridan tells Maynard
  109. that he is the second person in a month to tell him that something
  110. strange is happening out on the rim. He asks if Lieutenant
  111. Patrick saw anything. Maynard says he only saw a blink--a change in
  112. space. "He doesn't know what it was any more than I do," Maynard
  113. continues. "But it's there. And it was real. It still sends a shiver
  114. up my back when I think about it."
  115. <p>
  116. Garibaldi is talking with a young man named Orwell. Orwell tells
  117. Garibaldi that it will be very difficult to obtain the items he wants.
  118. Garibaldi says he can pay for it, but Orwell thinks it will be
  119. difficult to obtain because Garibaldi won't accept substitutes, and it
  120. is extremely difficult to find the items. Garibaldi offers a bonus and
  121. tells Orwell not to
  122. mention anything about it to Dr. Franklin.
  123. <p>
  124. <img align=middle width=128 height=96
  125. src="/lurk/gif/026/orwell.gif"> "How much to tell <em>nobody?</em>" "You
  126. couldn't afford it."
  127. <p>
  128. Meanwhile, Sheridan is in
  129. MedLab, talking to Dr. Franklin, who says that Sheridan should lose ten
  130. pounds, and should avoid meat, fat, and should eat lots of vegetables.
  131. <p>
  132. "I'm not sure I understand the intent of this meeting, Teronn," Delenn
  133. tells the Minbari who is speaking with her.
  134. <p>
  135. He explains that the other
  136. Minbari on the station are afraid that Delenn is no longer one of
  137. them.
  138. <p>
  139. "I am more 'one of us' at this moment, than I have ever been.
  140. More than you will ever know," she tells him. She says that she
  141. appreciates the concern, but says she can't tell him anything else.
  142. <p>
  143. He tells her that they need to understand what has happened.
  144. <p>
  145. "Understanding is not required. Only obedience."
  146. <p>
  147. <img align=middle width=128 height=96
  148. src="/lurk/gif/026/delenn.gif">
  149. <p>
  150. Teronn says that
  151. they would be obedient if they could be assured that she was still one
  152. of their own kind. He says they have the right to know if she is. "If
  153. you can not give us what we need," he continues. we will ask permission
  154. to send a representative to speak directly with the Grey
  155. Council...unless you object." She does not object. Teronn leaves.
  156. <p>
  157. Dr. Franklin tells Ivanova that she too needs to go on an increased
  158. diet in order to replenish deficiences in calcium, iron, and other
  159. minerals that are hampering the healing of her leg. He hands her a
  160. food plan, and after looking at it, she protests that she will gain
  161. weight. As she leaves angrily, she says, "Figures. All my life, I've
  162. fought against imperialism. Now, suddenly, I AM the expanding Russian
  163. frontier." As she leaves, Dr. Franklin adds, "But with very nice
  164. borders."
  165. <p>
  166. Sheridan escorts Maynard to the Cortez. Sheridan tells Maynard that he
  167. wishes he were going along. Maynard says he understands Sheridan's
  168. feelings, but does regard his job as just a job. He says that
  169. interesting things don't happen very often, but Sheridan doesn't
  170. agree. "The adventure is out there, Jack. A man has to go meet it."
  171. <p>
  172. Maynard says that sometimes, you don't need to find it, because it will
  173. find you. Captain Maynard is then called to the Cortez. He and
  174. Sheridan say their goodbyes and leave. Sheridan goes to C&C, where he
  175. gives the final departure clearance to the Cortez. He watches it enter
  176. the jumpgate and disappear.
  177. <p>
  178. Later, Ivanova is in Sheridan's office, talking to him about problems
  179. she is having with two of the delegations on board. He tells her that
  180. such problems should be her concern, but she informs him that they will
  181. not accept a solution from anyone but him. Sheridan reluctantly agrees
  182. to help solve the delgations' problems, but Ivanova is not completely
  183. satisfied. She tells him that she feels he has been acting strangely
  184. ever since the Cortez arrived. She asks him if he wants to talk about
  185. it.
  186. <p>
  187. "I command starships, Susan," he explains to her, "not cities in
  188. space. These problems, the...the petty complaints, the endless
  189. bickering, the constant negotiations. Jack Maynard said this isn't
  190. what I was trained for, and he's right. I mean, I am constantly
  191. sandbagged, swamped, drowned, and snowed under by nothing but trivia.
  192. I mean, look at this desk. I can't find a thing on it. You know me.
  193. Is this me? Huh?"
  194. <p>
  195. She tries to tell him that command a starship and
  196. commanding Babylon 5 are two different challenges, but that one is not
  197. more difficult than the other. She doesn't accept this as an answer
  198. because he never had difficulty with problems such as these on a
  199. starship.
  200. <p>
  201. He says that Captain Maynard was right. "They have turned
  202. me into a bureaucrat, a politician."
  203. <p>
  204. Ivanova asks him if he believes
  205. President Clark was wrong in assigning him to the post.
  206. <p>
  207. "I don't
  208. know," Sheridan answers. "Maybe he was, and it's just taken this long
  209. to sink in."
  210. <p>
  211. The Cortez is in hyperspace when an explosion rocks the ship.
  212. After they completed the jump, their fusion reactor spiked, dropping
  213. power to 30%, and causing the ship's tracking system to malfunction.
  214. This caused them to lose their lock to the jump point and rendered them
  215. incapable of leaving hyperspace. Though they are flying blind, they
  216. continue to move through hyperspace, hoping to eventually locate a jump
  217. point through which they can exit.
  218. <p>
  219. Ivanova, Garibaldi, and Sheridan are sitting at a table together,
  220. eating dinner. They eye the plates before them with great distate, not
  221. seeing the types of food they would normally eat. Garibaldi explains
  222. that he was able to solve the problems with the shoplifters. Sheridan
  223. tries to eat some
  224. of his salad, but can't. He points at Garibaldi and accuses him of
  225. being at fault for the food plan. Garibaldi tries to absolve himself
  226. of blame, but the three find a better solution: Ivanova gives her food
  227. to Garibaldi, who gives his to Sheridan, and Sheridan gives his to
  228. Ivanova. They are all about to eat the meals they would prefer when
  229. Dr. Franklin walks by and catches them. They all quickly switch plates
  230. around again and begin eating their proper meals.
  231. <p>
  232. <img align=middle width=128 height=96
  233. src="/lurk/gif/026/meal.gif"> Almost enjoying a meal.
  234. <p>
  235. The Cortez is still flying blind, and while power has returned, they do
  236. not have the time necessary to fix the navigational systems of the
  237. ship, as it would take them 48 hours, by which time they would no
  238. longer be able to locate the jump gate's signal. Captain Maynard
  239. orders their communications officer to send a mayday. Though the
  240. officer doesn't believe it could travel far enough in hyperspace to be
  241. of any use, they send it anyway. Babylon 5 receives the mayday, and
  242. Sheridan responds to it, saying that help is on the way. He orders all
  243. available pilots to their squadron bays. Ivanova reminds Sheridan that
  244. no ship has ever escaped from hyperspace in such a situation. Sheridan
  245. knows that, but rushes off to prepare anyway.
  246. <p>
  247. Dr. Franklin is examining Delenn in MedLab. She objects to being
  248. examined so much, but he says that, in addition to curiosity, he has a
  249. responsibility to make sure she is healthy after her change. She says
  250. that she is, and has suffered only minor problems, such as dizziness and
  251. fatigue. He asks if anything else is bothering her, and she says no.
  252. He also asks if the other Minbari are accepting the change without
  253. question.
  254. <p>
  255. "Of course," Delenn says. Changing the
  256. subject, she asks Dr. Franklin about a new delegation coming to the
  257. station. Dr. Franklin doesn't understand, but Delenn explains that
  258. Garibaldi was waiting for them. "I believe," she tells him, "they're
  259. called Bagna Cauda?"
  260. <p>
  261. Sheridan and Ivanova are in the squadron bays, addressing the pilots
  262. who will go out to attempt to rescue the Cortez. Sheridan says that
  263. they must try, even though no ship has been found when lost before.
  264. They don't know where the ship is, but they do know that, while the
  265. first mayday sent by the Cortez was strong, they are fading now.
  266. <p>
  267. Galus, the leader of Zeta squadron, asks how they can find the ship if
  268. they do not even know how to begin looking.
  269. <p>
  270. Sheridan says that he has
  271. an idea, although it is a risky one. "The first fighter will stop just
  272. inside the gate, and lock onto the gate's signal," Sheridan explains.
  273. "The second fighter will proceed 1000 kilometers further in, and lock
  274. onto the signal of the first one. The third fighter will lock onto the
  275. signal of the second one, and so on." He also says that they could
  276. increase the range, if necessary, by moving subsequent fighters further
  277. out. While it is a dangerous mission, all the pilots understand and
  278. prepare to leave, though both Sheridan and Ivanova wish they were
  279. going with them.
  280. <p>
  281. Sheridan addresses all fighters as they prepare to leave on the
  282. mission. "An old friend of mine once quoted me a ancient Egyptian
  283. blessing: `God be between you and harm, and all the empty places we
  284. must walk.' Bring the Cortez home." The fighters then leave the
  285. station and enter the jumpgate, to search for the Cortez.
  286. <p>
  287. There is no longer a signal from the Cortez, but the fighters are
  288. positioned inside the jumpgate, relaying the message to each other, and
  289. broadcasting it in hopes that the Cortez will receive it, though there
  290. hasn't been a response yet. Soon, the Cortez does receive the signal
  291. from Babylon 5, and responds, saying that their lock-on
  292. still isn't functioning. Sheridan orders the Cortez to continue
  293. broadcasting their mayday so that a fighter can find them and
  294. lead them out of hyperspace. The fighters chosen for this are Galus
  295. and Keffer. They have difficulty locating the Cortez, because the radio
  296. locator "doesn't want to settle." Eventually, the fighters move out so
  297. far that they lose contact with Babylon 5.
  298. <p>
  299. <img align=middle width=128 height=96
  300. src="/lurk/gif/026/furies.gif"> Starfuries to the rescue.
  301. <p>
  302. Ivanova and Sheridan are both in C&C, anxiously awaiting any
  303. information about the Cortez, but they hear nothing. Sheridan asks
  304. Ivanova to take a break, but she doesn't want to any more than he
  305. does. Sheridan says that Maynard is too good a friend to leave his
  306. post. "If this turns into a wake," he says to Ivanova, "I want to be
  307. here." Sheridan explains that Maynard was his first commanding officer;
  308. Sheridan worshipped him. Ivanova understands his feelings, and
  309. says that she will be there for him if the Cortez does not make it
  310. back, but asks him to remember the Egyptian blessing, given him by
  311. Maynard, in the meantime.
  312. <p>
  313. Keffer locates the mayday from the Cortez, and radios Galus, telling
  314. him so. Galus tells Keffer to go, saying that he will maintain
  315. position while Keffer finds the Cortez. Keffer soon finds the Cortez,
  316. and approaches it. Keffer loses contact with Galus when a Shadow ship
  317. appears in hyperspace and collides with Galus' ship, destroying it.
  318. On its way, the Shadow ship also collides with Keffer's ship, though
  319. luckily it only sends it spinning away, stabilizers offline.
  320. <p>
  321. Maynard and the Cortez
  322. manage to locate Keffer's ship, but notice only that he repeatedly
  323. fires in the same direction as his ship spins. Captain Maynard determines
  324. that this must
  325. mean Keffer wants him to go in the direction of the fire. They begin
  326. to lay in the course when they regain contact with Keffer's Starfury.
  327. They offer to come and retrieve him, but Keffer says that both vessels
  328. will be lost if they waste time picking him up.
  329. Maynard understands, and orders the Cortez
  330. to be taken back to Babylon 5.
  331. <p>
  332. Sheridan, Ivanova, and the others
  333. are relieved at the safe return of the Cortez and most of the
  334. Starfuries, though saddened that two fighters did not make it back.
  335. <p>
  336. Orwell is waiting impatiently for Garibaldi, who soon arrives. Orwell
  337. explains that he had difficult obtaining the items Garibaldi wanted,
  338. but did manage to do so, and opens a case for Garibaldi's inspection.
  339. Garibaldi begins examining the contents when he is interrupted by
  340. Dr. Franklin, who realized that Orwell had the ability to gather the
  341. ingredients for Bagna Cauda so far away from Earth. Orwell leaves, and
  342. Garibaldi says that he wants Bagna Cauda for his birthday. Dr.
  343. Franklin doesn't accept this as an excuse until Garibaldi
  344. explains further. "My father always made Bagna Cauda for me on my
  345. birthday. Pop was a great cook, and Bagna was his speciality. When he
  346. used to cook it, I mean, the smell, oh man, the smell would fill the
  347. whole place. It's funny, you know. When I watched him cook, I knew he
  348. was doing it because he loved me. He just could never say it, so he
  349. did that instead. He's been gone a long time. So, now, I make it
  350. myself once a year, honoring him, you know. It's...it's the only part
  351. of him I got left." Franklin believes the story, and tells Garibaldi
  352. to make enough for two people.
  353. <p>
  354. Sheridan is in the arboretum when Delenn comes in. She expresses her
  355. sympathy over the loss of the two Starfuries. Sheridan says that the
  356. hardest part of command is sending others out to die. She tries to
  357. tell him that because he did so, they managed to save others; he was
  358. in the right place.
  359. <p>
  360. <img align=middle width=128 height=96
  361. src="/lurk/gif/026/delenn-sheridan.gif">
  362. <p>
  363. He asks
  364. what makes her think that he belongs on Babylon 5, and she answers.
  365. "The universe puts us in places where we can learn. They are never
  366. easy places. They are right. Wherever we are is the right place at
  367. the right time. Pain sometimes comes. It is part of the process of
  368. constantly being born."
  369. <p>
  370. Sheridan says he thinks she's been doing thinking
  371. about this on her own.
  372. <p>
  373. "Perhaps," she tells him. "We are both, I
  374. suppose, going through transitions. But the universe knows what it's
  375. doing."
  376. <p>
  377. Sheridan says that he wishes he had the faith in the universe
  378. that she did.
  379. <p>
  380. "Then I will tell you a great secret, Captain," Delenn
  381. says to him. Perhaps the greatest of all time. The molecules of your
  382. body are the same molecules that make up this station, and the nebula
  383. outside, that burn inside the stars themselves. We are starstuff, we
  384. are the universe, made manifest, trying to figure itself out. As we
  385. have both learned, sometimes the universe requires a change of
  386. perspective."
  387. <p>
  388. Keffer is still lost in hyperspace, and running out of air, though he
  389. finally gets his thrusters back on-line. He cannot, however, locate
  390. the jumpgate because his lock-on systems are not functioning.
  391. Suddenly, another Shadow ship appears, flies a brief distance, and
  392. vanishes. Keffer tells the computer to analyze its flight path and
  393. tells it to correlate with the last sighting.
  394. <p>
  395. <img align=middle width=128 height=96
  396. src="/lurk/gif/026/shadow.gif"> An unlikely savior.
  397. <p>
  398. Sheridan is about to
  399. give up on Keffer's return when the jumpgate activates, and Keffer
  400. comes through it, requesting permission to dock. Sheridan happily
  401. agrees.
  402. <p>
  403. Keffer proposes a toast to Commander Galus. Ivanova asks Keffer if he
  404. could determine anything about the object that hit him, and indirectly,
  405. saved him. He says he couldn't tell anything about it, but that
  406. because he knew its position when it first appeared relative to his
  407. position, he was able to find his way out, using its origination point
  408. the second time as a reference. But he didn't know what it was. "There
  409. was just this feeling that something dark and dangerous had gone by,"
  410. he explains.
  411. <p>
  412. Maynard agrees that the feeling is powerful. Keffer
  413. wants to learn what the object was, but Ivanova says there are more
  414. important
