  1. <p> It is January 8, 2259. The Earth Alliance ship Agamemnon jumps
  2. into hyperspace. Its commanding officer, Captain John Sheridan,
  3. receives a gold channel message from General Hague of the joint chiefs
  4. of staff. General Hague tells Captain Sheridan that a Minbari warship
  5. has appeared several times in Earth-controlled space, only a short
  6. distance from Babylon 5. Hague believes that the ship may have hostile
  7. intent. Sheridan doesn't understand until Hague tells him that the
  8. ship is a renegade warship, which Sheridan correctly guesses is called
  9. the <cite>Trigati</cite>. The Earth Alliance is awaiting the arrival
  10. of a ship sent by the Minbari government to assist should the warship
  11. decide to attack. Sheridan is ordered to make personal contact with
  12. that ship to help with the search. Sheridan questions the wisdom of
  13. that action, remembering his previous encounter with the Minbari, when
  14. he destroyed one of their warships. Hague understands Sheridan's
  15. reservations, but tells Sheridan to proceed to Babylon 5 to perform one
  16. additional duty.
  17. <p>
  18. <img align=middle src="/lurk/gif/023/agamemnon.gif"> The Agamemnon.
  19. <p> On Babylon 5, Ivanova, currently in command of the station, walks
  20. through the halls and is bothered by several aliens, whom she sets in
  21. their place during an elevator ride. The action of the scene continues
  22. under her voice, a status report for the station: "It is now eight days
  23. since the death of Earth Alliance president Louis Santiago, and five
  24. days since Commander Sinclair was recalled to Earth without
  25. explanation--and the whole place has gone straight to Hell. I can only
  26. conclude that I'm paying off karma at a vastly accelerated rate.
  27. Security Chief Michael Garibaldi remains in critical condition in
  28. Medlab. Dr. Franklin's done all he can, but we still don't know if
  29. he'll recover. As for Ambassador Delenn, well, something's going on in
  30. her quarters. That's for sure."
  31. <p> General Hague contacts Ivanova and tells her that Commander
  32. Sinclair will not be returning to Babylon 5 and that he has been
  33. permanently reassigned to the Minbari homeworld as the first human
  34. ambassador to the planet. Hague informs her that Captain Sheridan is
  35. the new choice for the commander of Babylon 5, but Ivanova is unsure of
  36. the decision, claiming that it is "bound to be a controversial
  37. choice." Hague understands, but tells her that the decision has
  38. already been made. He ends the communication.
  39. <p> In Delenn's quarters, Lennier continues to maintain a vigil over
  40. the chrysalis in which Delenn is changing. Another Minbari, Hedronn,
  41. enters and addresses Lennier directly. "So...she's done it, hasn't
  42. she? She's in there. We told her to wait. `The prophecy will attend
  43. to itself,' we told her. Now we are committed to the path. I've
  44. spoken with the other members of the council. The Trigati has been
  45. seen in this sector. If it should appear, you must go to the humans
  46. and tell them what we told you. It's time they knew the truth."
  47. <p> An officer approaches Ivanova, and wants to talk to her about
  48. Sheridan's arrival. She orders him to have a full honor guard in place
  49. when he arrives, but he tells her that Sheridan's transport has already
  50. docked; there was a miscommunication about the time. She rushes off
  51. and meets Sheridan just as he comes aboard, and he officially takes
  52. command of the station. While his luggage is delivered to his
  53. quarters, Ivanova takes him on a tour of the station. He asks her what
  54. the status of the station is, and she recounts it for him. After
  55. hearing about Garibaldi, G'Kar, Delenn, and the ever-mysterious Kosh,
  56. the only reply he can come up with is "Interesting place you have
  57. here..."
  58. <p> Elsewhere on the station, there is another arrival -- a Minbari who
  59. asks the computer to show him the station, but walks away after hearing
  60. the description of the green sector -- the ambassadorial quarters.
  61. <p> Ivanova and Sheridan complete their tour and arrive in the new
  62. commander's quarters. She takes the opportunity to ask him about
  63. his appointment as head of the station. He tells her that he was
  64. President Santiago's second choice to head the station, probably
  65. because he had worked with many races, including the Minbari. This
  66. worries Ivanova, who reminds him that the Minbari still refer to him as
  67. "Starkiller," and guesses they won't be happy to learn he is in command
  68. of Babylon 5. He hopes they have forgotten, but doesn't believe they
  69. have. He asks her to help bring him up to speed. They talk about the
  70. crew's reaction to the President's death. Many of them are having a
  71. difficult time accepting the loss. Ivanova and Sheridan are no
  72. exceptions. Because of the recent turmoil around the station, Ivanova
  73. is especially glad to see Sheridan again; they had served together at the
  74. transport point near Io. They make plans to go to C&C so that he
  75. can deliver a "good luck speech" to the crew.
  76. <p>
  77. <img align=middle src="/lurk/gif/023/sheridan.gif"> Sheridan describes his
  78. speech.
  79. <p>
  80. Elsewhere on the station, Hedronn notices someone he recognizes -- the
  81. Minbari who was on his way to the ambassadorial sector of Babylon 5 -- as
  82. Kalain. Hedronn runs after Kalain, who grabs and threatens him,
  83. claiming that the Grey Council betrayed the Minbari. Kalain explains
  84. that he has intercepted a message saying that Sheridan had been chosen
  85. to lead Babylon 5. When Hedronn protests that the wishes of the Grey
  86. Council were ignored, Kalain asks if Delenn also ignored the
  87. Council. Kalain says his people have supporters in the Grey
  88. Council, who have told them that Sinclair is on Minbar, though Kalain
  89. does not believe that Sinclair being an ambassador is the whole story.
  90. Kalain lets Hedronn go, warning him to leave while he still can.
  91. <p>
  92. <img align=middle src="/lurk/gif/023/kill.gif"> "Minbari do not kill other
  93. Minbari!"
  94. <p>
  95. After she goes to check on Garibaldi's condition, Ivanova finds
  96. Sheridan and tells him that the officers on C&C are ready for him. He
  97. enters and begins his speech, talking about the visit he made when he
  98. was twenty-one to Tibet and the Dalai Lama. After eating a very simple
  99. dinner, the Dalai Lama asked if he understood. Sheridan didn't. "Good
  100. beginning," the Dalai Lama said to him. "It will be even better when
  101. you begin to understand what you do not understand."
  102. <p>
  103. During Sheridan's
  104. speech, a call from security says that a Minbari is demanding
  105. to speak to Sheridan. Sheridan and Ivanova leave. While they are on
  106. their way, Kalain attempts to enter the green sector, but is stopped by
  107. a security officer, whom he attacks. Kalain steals the officer's weapon and
  108. proceeds into the green sector.
  109. <p>
  110. It turns out that the Minbari who wanted to speak with Sheridan was
  111. Hedronn, who has some important information regarding Kalain. Hedronn
  112. tells Sheridan and Ivanova that Kalain was second in command of one of
  113. their flagships during the Earth-Minbari war and that he vanished when
  114. the war ended. Ivanova asks why Hedronn believes Kalain is here to
  115. cause trouble, but Hedronn just answers that he has his reasons.
  116. <p>
  117. Sheridan suspects the ship Kalain was second in command of was the
  118. Trigati. Ivanova has never heard of the ship, but Hedronn explains
  119. that at the end of the war, Sineval, one of their warship commanders,
  120. committed suicide rather than obey the Grey Council's order to
  121. surrender. When that happened, Kalain took command of the ship, and it
  122. vanished. Sheridan says that, while the ship had been seen over the
  123. years, it had never attacked. Hedronn suspects that its recent
  124. reappearance suggests it might be "out of retirement."
  125. <p>
  126. Sheridan doesn't understand, however, why Hedronn, who claimed that he
  127. was from the Ministry of Culture, knew Kalain, a high-ranking member of
  128. the warrior caste after twelve years. Hedronn doesn't respond, saying
  129. only that he would answer if he recognized Sheridan's authority, but he
  130. doesn't because the Minbari government was not consulted on Sheridan's
  131. appointment. Sheridan tells Hedronn that the president decided on him
  132. because the Minbari had too much influence over an Earth outpost.
  133. <p>
  134. "And
  135. the day that a man such as yourself is given a position of this
  136. importance is a dark day indeed," Hedronn says. "We lost many of our
  137. best warriors because of you. And we do not soon forget such things.
  138. If there is a doom on this station, it is because you brought it
  139. here." Hedronn then leaves abruptly.
  140. <p>
  141. Because of Hedronn's attitude, Sheridan believes that he is a member of
  142. the Grey Council, because no one else would know someone so high in the
  143. warrior caste so well. Sheridan then admits that Ivanova was correct,
  144. that the Minbari don't want him in command of Babylon 5. She
  145. points out that they are a prideful people, and that he did destroy
  146. their flagship, the Black Star. She asks how he destroyed it.
  147. Sheridan explains that, because their weapons could not lock on to the
  148. ship, due to some sort of stealth technology, he mined the asteroid
  149. field between Jupiter and Mars with fusion bombs, which don't need
  150. direct targets. It destroyed the Black Star and three other heavy
  151. cruisers. "It was the only real victory we had in the whole damn war,
  152. and I am not about to apologize for it!"
  153. <p>
  154. Sheridan
  155. suddenly remembers Hedronn's statement that Kalain felt betrayed by
  156. the Minbari homeworld, and deduces that, in such a situation, it would be
  157. natural to attack the representative of that world. Realizing they
  158. might not have much time, Sheridan and Ivanova rush to Delenn's quarters to
  159. find Kalain
  160. pointing a gun at Lennier. They are able to easily apprehend Kalain,
  161. but when Sheridan attempts to get a close look at the chrysalis, Lennier
  162. stops him.
  163. Ambassador Delenn is indisposed, he says, and Sheridan should come back
  164. later...much later.
  165. <p>
  166. <img align=middle src="/lurk/gif/023/lennier.gif"> Lennier defends Delenn.
  167. <p>
  168. Sheridan and Ivanova interrogate Kalain, asking him about the Trigati
  169. and why he has suddenly appeared on Babylon 5. Sheridan can't believe that
  170. Kalain's goal was to murder Lennier and Delenn; he had ample time to kill
  171. both of them.
  172. <p>
  173. "Everyone knows Minbari do not
  174. kill Minbari," Kalain says. Sheridan doesn't accept that as an answer
  175. and again asks Kalain about his presence. "Perhaps everyone is
  176. wrong."
  177. <p>
  178. Sheridan concludes that Kalain never intended to kill
  179. them, but that something else was going on. "Perhaps you are the
  180. problem," Kalain replies.
  181. <p>
  182. Ivanova tries to intervene, claiming that
  183. they are getting nowhere, but Sheridan has one more question for
  184. Kalain. "I'm told that after the death of your commanding officer, you
  185. took command of a Minbari war cruiser. But if you're here, where's
  186. your ship?"
  187. <p>
  188. Sheridan and Ivanova leave. Lennier catches up to the two of them
  189. outside and apologizes for his earlier behavior. He says that he
  190. needs to speak to both of them. "It concerns," he explains, "the
  191. reason you were sent here, the relocation of commander Sinclair, and
  192. the reason we surrendered at the Battle of the Line." When they
  193. reach Sheridan's office, Lennier begins his story:
  194. <p>
  195. "After three years, the Holy War that began when our leader was killed
  196. by an Earth explorer division was almost over. To avenge Dukhat's
  197. death, we had pursued your forces all the way back to your homeworld.
  198. The few surviving Earth ships that were ordered to defend your world at
  199. any cost... were not an obstacle. The Grey Council had come to oversee
  200. the final victory of our forces."
  201. <p>
  202. The scene shifts, back to the
  203. inside of the Grey Council ship, where the Grey Council is in session
  204. surrounded by a display showing the battle raging outside.
  205. <p>
  206. <a href="/lurk/gif/023/bravely.jpg"><img src="/lurk/gif/023/bravely.gif"></a>
  207. <p>
  208. "They fight bravely. They cannot harm our ships, but they continue to try,"
  209. says Delenn.
  210. <p>
  211. Hedronn dismisses her comment.
  212. "Whether they fight or not, they know they will die anyway.
  213. So really, is this bravery or simple desperation?"
  214. <p>
  215. "Perhaps they are the same thing. We should bring one of them
  216. aboard for questioning. If our next step is the final
  217. assault on their world, we must know their defenses."
  218. <p>
  219. "Very well, Delenn. Choose, but quickly. We are fast running out of
  220. candidates."
  221. <p>
  222. Delenn sees a Starfury making a suicide run at their ship.
  223. "That one," she says. A beam immobilizes the Starfury, and it is
  224. brought aboard.
  225. <p>
  226. Lennier continues his story. "This was the first time the Grey Council
  227. would have direct contact with a human, in this case Sinclair. He was
  228. tortured, interrogated, scanned. During the course of the scan, the
  229. Council discovered something terrible. At first, they refused to
  230. believe it, so they took in other humans and had them scanned as well.
  231. But it was true."
  232. <p>
  233. "What was true?" asks Ivanova.
  234. <p>
  235. "It is our belief that every generation of Minbari is reborn in each
  236. following generation. Remove those souls, and the whole suffers. We
  237. are diminished. Over the last two thousand years, there have been
  238. fewer Minbari born into each generation. And those who are born do not
  239. seem equal to those who came before. It almost as if our greater souls
  240. have been disappearing. At the Battle of the Line, we discovered where
  241. our souls were going. They were going to you. Minbari souls are being
  242. reborn, in part or in full, in human bodies."
  243. <p>
  244. "So you stopped the war to avoid harming your own souls?"
  245. <p>
  246. Lennier confirms that, and continues.
  247. "But the Council knew that our people, and yours, were not ready for
  248. this information. It could unravel our entire society. So we could
  249. not tell our generals the reason for the surrender. We had all memory
  250. of the examination erased from Sinclair's mind, and we let him go. It
  251. has been our secret. Now it is yours. It must be kept."
  252. <p>
  253. "I don't understand. If this is such a secret, why tell us?"
  254. <p>
  255. "Because
  256. changes are coming. Commander Sinclair was the first. There will be
  257. more."
  258. <p>
  259. The meeting is interrupted by a call from C&C--a Minbari cruiser, on an
  260. attack vector, is coming through the jumpgate. Warren Keffer, the
  261. leader of Zeta Squadron, watches with the other people in his
  262. squad, but can't believe what he is seeing. Sheridan arrives at C&C
  263. and orders a red alert. He activates the defense grid and puts all
  264. squadrons on standby. While this happens, Kalain, in his detention
  265. cell, removes a tooth from his mouth. He opens it, revealing a blue
  266. liquid. He puts the tooth in his mouth and swallows.
  267. <p>
  268. <img align=middle src="/lurk/gif/023/tooth.gif"> Kalain practices poor
  269. dental hygeine.
  270. <p>
  271. Captain Sheridan communicates with the warship, which the commander
  272. identifies as the Trigati. She demands that Kalain be returned, since
  273. he did not kill or harm anyone aboard Babylon 5. When Sheridan
  274. refuses, she launches her fighters. Sheridan counters, launching the
  275. fighters aboard Babylon 5. He informs her that an attack could be
  276. considered an act of war.
  277. <p>
  278. "The war has already
  279. begun, Captain. All that remains now is honor and death."
  280. <p>
  281. This remark
  282. puzzles Sheridan, since no one has yet been killed. He suddenly
  283. realizes what's going on: they are attempting to start a war, but since
  284. Kalain hasn't killed anyone and the Trigati hasn't attacked, they must
  285. be trying to frame Babylon 5. This is confirmed when security reports
  286. that Kalain has killed himself. Ivanova can't believe that Minbari
  287. would attack after learning they were sharing Minbari souls, but
  288. Sheridan reminds her that the Trigati was not informed of that. The
  289. Minbari fighters close in on the station, and Sheridan orders his fighters to
  290. intercept and engage.
  291. <p>
  292. While the Babylon 5 fighters move to intercept, Sheridan looks at a
  293. display of both groups of fighters; somehow Babylon 5 is able to track
  294. the Minbari fighters, even though it's using the same kind of tracking
  295. system Earthforce used during the war.
  296. <p>
  297. Sheridan orders his
  298. fighters not to attack. He gives a message to Ivanova, telling her to
  299. transmit it through the jumpgate without the Trigati intercepting it.
  300. She does so, but doesn't think it will work if it is a distress signal,
  301. as no one could arrive in time.
  302. <p>
  303. <a href="/lurk/ftp/Clips/laser.avi"><img src="/lurk/gif/movie.xbm" align=middle
  304. alt="[Movie]"></a>
  305. A tight-beam transmission using the station laser.
  306. <p>
  307. The Trigati's fighters continue to
  308. advance, but Sheridan orders his fighters to maintain position. When
  309. the Trigati's fighters reach the Earth ships, they do not
  310. attack -- they fly past and return to the Trigati. Another Minbari
  311. ship suddenly comes through the jumpgate. Ivanova is afraid that the
  312. Trigati fighters were waiting for reinforcements, but Sheridan tells
  313. her that, since he knew another Minbari ship was looking for the
  314. Trigati, he figured they must be waiting in hyperspace.
  315. <p>
  316. <img align=middle src="/lurk/gif/023/flyby.gif">
  317. <a href="/lurk/ftp/Clips/2away.avi"><img src="/lurk/gif/movie.xbm" align=middle
  318. alt="[Movie]"></a>
  319. The Minbari fighters fly past.
  320. <p>
  321. The other cruiser orders the Trigati to surrender. Sheridan continues
  322. to explain to Ivanova that, because they could track the Minbari
  323. fighters, that probably meant the Minbari wanted to be destroyed. The Trigati
  324. was in exile for twelve years, and could not go home, fight without
  325. causing a war, or surrender without being dishonored. If Babylon 5 was
  326. forced to attack, they would die at human hands, thereby becoming
  327. martyrs.
  328. <p>
  329. The Trigati attempts to back off and open up a jump
  330. point, but the war cruiser cuts off their
  331. engines with a beam. They order the Trigati to surrender and be
  332. boarded, but the Trigati refuses, and replies with only one word:
  333. "honor." The Trigati self-destructs in a ball of flame, apparently
  334. from their fusion reactors. A signal comes in from the war cruiser;
  335. Sheridan greets the Minbari commander.
  336. <p>
  337. <img align=middle src="/lurk/gif/023/cut.gif">
  338. <a href="/lurk/ftp/Clips/shipcut.avi"><img src="/lurk/gif/movie.xbm" align=middle
  339. alt="[Movie]"></a> The Trigati is attacked.
  340. <p>
  341. "Perhaps to you," the Minbari on the other end says to Sheridan, "this
  342. was a tactical problem to be solved. For us, this has been a great
  343. sorrow. The crew of the Trigati were heroes to many of our people.
  344. Their death will be mourned, and your name will be remembered." The
  345. Minbari war cruiser cuts off the communication and vanishes into
  346. the jump gate.
  347. <p>
  348. Later, Sheridan is in his quarters, looking through his belongings, which
  349. have recently been delivered. Ivanova arrives and asks Sheridan if something
  350. is wrong. "When I got my orders," Sheridan explains, "I figured this
  351. place was a great opportunity. And now I wonder if coming here was
  352. irresponsible. This whole mess with the Trigati might not have
  353. happened if I hadn't been here. I mean, my presence, my...actions in
  354. the war...I'm to blame for bringing all this trouble to Babylon 5.
  355. What was it our friend in the Grey Council said? 'If there is a doom
  356. on this station, it is because you brought it here.' Well maybe he was
  357. right. I spoke with the president. He is the only other human who
  358. knows why the Minbari surrendered, and he doesn't believe this stuff
  359. about us sharing Minbari souls, and I can't say that I do either. But
  360. they believe it. That's why they chose Sinclair to run this place...
  361. that's why they've picked him to live on their world. He was their
  362. first human contact. Him they trust. But me? I don't know. If
  363. Sinclair had been here instead, maybe they might not have attacked."
  364. <p>
  365. Ivanova tells Sheridan to give himself the benefit of the doubt.
  366. Before she leaves, she tells him that he can talk to her any time, if
  367. he needs to.
  368. <p>
  369. Lennier is busy preparing candles in Delenn's quarters, and setting
  370. them around her chrysalis. "I told them, Delenn, as I was ordered. I
  371. only wish I could have told them the rest -- about the great enemy that
  372. is returning and the prophecy that the two sides of our spirit must
  373. unite against the darkness or be destroyed. They say it will take both
  374. of our races to stop the darkness. I am told that the Earthers will
  375. discover all this, soon enough, on their own. I hope they are right.
  376. Because if we are wrong, no one will survive our mistake." He
  377. says good night, and leaves right before the chrysalis begins moving,
  378. and Delenn begins to emerge.
  379. <p>
  380. <img align=middle src="/lurk/gif/023/prophecy.gif"> "I only wish I could
  381. have told them the rest."
  382. <p>
  383. Ivanova, Dr. Franklin, and Keffer discuss the recent events in a
  384. nightclub on the station. Keffer asks what they think of the new
  385. captain, and Dr. Franklin and Ivanova both believe that he will be
  386. okay. He was supposed to meet them there for drinks, but Franklin says
  387. that when he last saw Sheridan, he was going to the C&C to deliver his
  388. good luck speech.
  389. <p>
  390. "It was an early earth president, Abraham Lincoln, who best described
  391. our situation. 'The dogmas of the quiet past are inadequate to the
  392. stormy present. The occasion is piled high with difficulty, and we
  393. must rise to the occasion. We cannot escape history. We will be
  394. remembered in spite of ourselves. The fiery trial through which we
  395. pass will light us down in honor or dishonor, to the last generation.
  396. We shall nobly save, or meanly lose, or last best hope of Earth.'"
  397. Though there is no one else on C&C, he has still delivered his speech
  398. in time. He leaves C&C to begin the second day of his new
  399. command.
