  1. <p> Shon, a young alien boy, has developed a "congested blockage
  2. in his upper air passages." When Dr. Franklin explains to Shon's
  3. parents that Shon's condition can be cured by a fairly routine
  4. surgical procedure, the parents seem bewildered. "You will cut him
  5. open?" they ask, and explain that the "Chosen of God" cannot be
  6. "punctured" -- for their souls will escape.

  11. <p> B5 has received a distress signal from the starliner Asimov,
  12. which has been immobilized because of a fire in its command and
  13. control center--unfortunately, the ship is now adrift in Raider
  14. territory. Ivanova (who pleas with Sinclair to send her instead of
  15. Garibaldi) is sent to lead a fighter wing to rescue the Asimov.
  16. <p> Dr. Maya Hernandez, one of the B5 doctors, tries to convince
  17. Shon's parents to allow the procedure, but they are quite determined
  18. not to allow it. Just as it becomes evident that the parents
  19. will not change their mind, Franklin suggests an alternate
  20. procedure. He admits that this procedure won't work as well, but
  21. it's better than nothing. After the parents leave to consider this
  22. new method, Dr. Franklin explains to Hernandez that, though this
  23. procedure will obviously not save Shon, it will at least give
  24. Franklin time to try to convince the parents to change their mind.
  25. Both doctors realize that there are only two options--surgery or
  26. death--but Franklin explains that it is sometimes necessary to
  27. "heal the family before you can heal the patient." Shon's parents
  28. return and say that they are willing to try Franklin's new
  29. procedure.

  33. Franklin comforts Shon.
  34. <p> Franklin, who is speaking with Sinclair, explains his dilemma.
  35. Franklin requests that Sinclair order him to perform the surgery,
  36. but Sinclair declines, commenting that it's a dangerous precedent
  37. to set. Franklin explains that that precedent has <em>already</em> been
  38. set--by Sinclair's ordering Dr. Kyle to save Ambassador Kosh
  39. (cf. <a href="/lurk/guide/000.html">"The Gathering"</a>)--and
  40. when Franklin brings up the idea of making
  41. this issue official by petitioning Sinclair with a formal request
  42. to operate, Sinclair asks him to try to find another solution.
  43. <p> Meanwhile, Franklin's "procedure" is obviously not working.
  44. When the parents become angered, Franklin pleads with them again,
  45. but they still refuse to allow surgery. Finally, Franklin
  46. threatens to suspend their parental authority if they will not
  47. allow him to operate--and he makes a formal request for Commander
  48. Sinclair to decide this issue.
  49. <p> Shon's parents go to Sinclair and request that he decide in
  50. their favor. Sinclair explains his dilemma--he must consider
  51. Franklin's request, but he must also act as the parents' advocate
  52. because the parents' race has no ambassador on the station. The
  53. parents express their objection--they don't like the situation and
  54. believe that Sinclair will rule against them because "Earth people
  55. always stick together."
  56. <p> The parents visit Ambassador G'Kar and ask for the Narn to
  57. intervene on their behalf, but G'Kar claims that the parents' world
  58. doesn't have much to offer to Narn--and claims the Narns don't
  59. casually enter into other people's affairs. The parents then visit
  60. Ambassador Mollari, who says that he sympathizes with them but
  61. explains that it would be too expensive to intervene--if the
  62. Council was called on this matter, there would be a whole array of
  63. costs that would have to be justified. Ambassador Kosh proves just
  64. as unhelpful to the parents: concerning the issue of a patient's
  65. safety versus the concerns of the patient's world, he simply says,
  66. "The avalanche has already started. It is too late for the pebbles
  67. to vote."

  71. Shon's parents plead with Kosh.
  72. <p> When the parents plea with Delenn, she says that she
  73. sympathizes entirely, but she also says that the Minbari are
  74. reluctant to get involved with the religious affairs of other
  75. people--especially because they've seen what happens when other
  76. races interfere with Minbari religious affairs. Delenn explains
  77. that both Dr. Franklin and the parents believe they are doing
  78. what's "right" -- yet how can either of them prove it?
  79. <p> Meanwhile, Ivanova's team has found the Asimov--but they have
  80. also picked up the signal of an approaching Raider vessel.
  81. <p> Sinclair explains to Garibaldi how distraught he is--the buck
  82. keeps being passed back to him. Earth Central refuses to advise,
  83. and the other ambassadors refuse to take action. Later, when
  84. Sinclair visits Shon, Shon explains that, though he doesn't want to
  85. die, he doesn't want the surgery either.
  86. <p> When Sinclair finishes speaking with Shon, Dr. Franklin asks
  87. him what his decision on the request will be. Sinclair explains
  88. that it's a difficult decisions: both sides, according to their
  89. own beliefs, are morally "right." "Who should I believe?" asks
  90. Sinclair. "You [Dr. Franklin], because we share the same beliefs?
  91. Or do we? ... What makes a religion false? If any religion is
  92. right, then maybe they all have to be right. Maybe God doesn't
  93. care how you say your prayers, just as long as you say them ...
  94. What we hold sacred gives our lives meaning. What are we taking
  95. away from this child? ... I have to refuse to sign the order. I
  96. can't allow you to perform the operation."
  97. <p> When Franklin angrily confronts Sinclair, Sinclair explains
  98. that he really had no choice in the matter. According to his
  99. personal beliefs, he would sign the order right away--but as
  100. commander of B5, he wants to ensure the neutrality of the station.
  101. He explains that he can't just set other races' beliefs aside
  102. whenever it's convenient or whenever they violate human beliefs.
  103. He also says that, though he is violating the precedent set when he
  104. ordered Dr. Kyle to operate on Kosh, that particular precedent must
  105. be stopped somewhere.
  106. <p> Meanwhile, Shon's condition is worsening. Franklin calls
  107. Shon's parents, who say how grateful they are for Sinclair's
  108. wisdom, and who tell Shon how proud they are of him that he is
  109. dying honorably. When Shon's parents leave, however, Franklin
  110. decides to operate on Shon anyway--he can't allow a simple legal
  111. order to get in the way of what's "right," according to him. Dr.
  112. Hernandez decides to help him.

  117. <p> The Raider ship that is approaching Ivanova is meanwhile

  119. contrary, breaks formation and pursues this Raider ship--as the
  120. rest of the squadron escorts the Asimov back to B5. Ivanova
  121. successfully destroys this ship, but notes a large squadron of
  122. Raider ships approaching after her. She reverses her thrusters,
  123. trying to escape.
  124. <p> Franklin's operation was successful, and Shon--who is now
  125. <em>physically</em> fine--comments that he doesn't feel spiritually any
  126. different than he did before. When his parents arrive, however,

  134. they are both interrupted by Hernandez, who summons them to the Med

  136. they appear a little more complacent. They say that if it were in
  137. their power to forgive Franklin, they would--because he meant no
  138. harm, and because he did what he did out of compassion. They
  139. leave, after wrapping Shon in a "travelling robe."
  140. <p> A little later, when Franklin and Hernandez are researching
  141. the customs of Shon's race, Franklin comes across a description of
  142. a "travelling robe." Suddenly, he rushes out of the Med Lab, runs
  143. through the corridors, and arrives at Shon's room--only to realize
  144. that he is too late, that the parents have already killed Shon.
  145. The parents, however, don't see why Franklin is so upset--they
  146. comment, "This was not our son. This was only a shell. There was
  147. nothing to do but end the pain of the shell."

  152. <p> Later, Sinclair tells Franklin that he won't ask for his
  153. resignation--this time. However, he comments that Franklin
  154. shouldn't have made the request--then, he wouldn't have had to
  155. violate it. Franklin is quite upset with himself, however, for not
  156. knowing that the parents would kill Shon. Franklin wonders if
  157. things might not be better or easier if nobody cared about life or
  158. religion.
  159. <p> "What makes us human is that we care--and because we care, we
  160. never stop trying," replies Sinclair.
  161. <p> Meanwhile, Ivanova and her squadron have returned safely.

  165. explains the events of the preceding days to Ivanova.
