  1. <p> A solemn-looking man, known to us only as "Knight Two," has
  2. arrived on Babylon 5. Shortly after his arrival, he sees another
  3. man ("Knight One") in the waiting area and moves over to him
  4. quietly.
  5. <p> Meanwhile, right outside the waiting area, a security officer
  6. named Benson is getting beaten up by two gamblers to whom he owes
  7. a significant sum of money. The gamblers threaten him with death
  8. if he does not pay them within 24 hours.
  9. <p> Knight Two has moved into his quarters. Knight One arrives,
  10. bringing a three-dimensional image projector with him. He
  11. activates it, and it shows a lifelike picture of Commander
  12. Sinclair. "I've identified the target," he says.
  13. <p> Sinclair and Garibaldi have summoned security officer Benson
  14. in order to question him about possible debts he's been accumulating.
  15. They inform Benson that B5 security officers are strictly
  16. limited in their gambling--if an officer becomes indebted to the
  17. "wrong people," he would become vulnerable to blackmail, resulting
  18. in a security risk to the station. Garibaldi claims to have
  19. information that Benson has been exceeding the gambling limits, but
  20. Benson insists that he's done nothing wrong. Sinclair, however,
  21. not wanting to take any chances, removes Benson from the active
  22. duty roster pending an investigation in the matter. After Benson
  23. leaves, Garibaldi comments that he believes Benson is lying.
  24. <p> "Everyone lies, Michael," replies Sinclair. "The innocent lie
  25. because they don't want to be blamed for something they didn't do,
  26. and the guilty lie because they don't have any other choice."
  27. Knight Two and Knight One are building a complex gadget in Knight
  28. Two's quarters. They have everything they need except for a power
  29. source; Knight One claims that it is impossible to smuggle an
  30. energy source onto the station because it would be picked up by the
  31. scanners. "So I improvised. It'll be here."
  32. <p> Benson, in the meantime, has stealthily made his way to a
  33. storage room ...
  34. <p> In the medical lab, Dr. Franklin is examining Delenn. He
  35. expresses his thanks to Delenn for allowing him to examine her; he
  36. says that he rarely gets the chance to examine Minbari--unless
  37. there's something wrong with one of them; he says that to have data
  38. on a healthy Minbari will give him a basis from which to operate.
  39. After the examination, Delenn rises and asks Franklin about a rumor
  40. she heard from one of the other doctors--that Franklin used to
  41. hitchhike aboard spaceships. Franklin confirms this rumor; he had
  42. "wanted to see it all," so he traded his services as a doctor in
  43. exchange for free passage on various ships. He explains how he did
  44. this until the Earth-Minbari war started, but then pauses. Delenn
  45. asks him if he was involved in the war. He replies that toward the
  46. end of the war, all xenobiologists were asked by Earth Force to
  47. turn over their notes on Minbari physiology so that effective
  48. genetic and biological weapons could be created. Delenn asks him
  49. if he did, indeed, hand over his notes.
  50. <p> "I took an oath that <em>all</em> life is sacred. I destroyed my
  51. notes rather than have them used for killing," he answers.
  52. <p> Delenn smiles and thanks him. When Franklin asks her,
  53. however, what her involvement in the war was, she only answers that
  54. the matter is "a topic for another time."
  55. <p> Benson, after securing an energy pod from the storage area,
  56. delivers it to Knight Two's quarters. The Knights promise to pay
  57. him promptly. After Benson leaves, the Knights connect the energy
  58. supply to the device they've been building. "I think we're ready
  59. to proceed," they agree.
  60. <p> Sinclair, asleep in his quarters, is having a traumatic dream
  61. about the Battle of the Line, the final battle of the Earth-Minbari
  62. war. Sinclair's squadron is fighting a Minbari cruiser. One of
  63. Sinclair's friends, Mitchell, ignores one of Sinclair's suggestions
  64. and breaks from formation, feeling that he can get a clear shot at
  65. the Minbari ship. Sinclair has a feeling, however, that Mitchell
  66. is entering a trap. Just as he realizes that his friend is about
  67. to die ... he wakes up and rises to get himself a drink. As he
  68. looks around his room, he notices that his computer is not working.
  69. He calls a maintenance team, but there is no response. Worried, he
  70. calls security; again, there is no response. He gets dressed
  71. quickly and leaves his quarters, running to the bridge.
  72. <p>
  73. <a href="/lurk/ftp/Pictures/Scenes/sinclzoc.gif"><img
  74. src="/lurk/gif/008/sinclzoc.gif" align="middle"></a>Sinclair on his
  75. way to the bridge.
  76. <p>When he
  77. gets to the bridge, however, it is empty, and the computer is not
  78. activated. He tries communicating with Earth Central, but does not
  79. receive a response. Finally, he attempts to activate the computer;
  80. at length, the computer responds. Sinclair, slightly relieved,
  81. asks the computer if an evacuation of B5 has been ordered; the
  82. computer replies that there was no evacuation. Sinclair then asks
  83. the computer to scan for other life forms on B5; sure enough, the
  84. computer finds one other life form and notifies Sinclair of the
  85. life form's position. Sinclair runs to the location, but finds
  86. nothing at first. "What the hell is going on around here," he asks
  87. himself.
  88. <p> Suddenly, the lights in the corridor start flashing off, one
  89. by one, and a mysterious voice answers him. "Maybe you're asleep.
  90. Maybe you're insane. Maybe you're dead. Maybe you're in Hell.
  91. Not that it matters much, Commander Sinclair, because wherever you
  92. are, wherever you go, you're mine!" Sinclair turns around to find
  93. Knight Two staring at him.
  94. <p>
  95. <a href="/lurk/ftp/Pictures/Scenes/knight2-1.jpg"><img
  96. src="/lurk/gif/008/knight2-1.gif" align="middle"></a>"You're mine."
  97. <p> Delenn has arrived at Garibaldi's quarters. She appears
  98. concerned and tells Garibaldi that she was supposed to meet with
  99. Sinclair an hour before. Garibaldi calls Sinclair and receives no
  100. response; sharing now in Delenn's concern, he begins to search for
  101. Sinclair personally.
  102. <p> Sinclair angrily asks Knight Two what he's done to Babylon 5;
  103. Knight Two replies that he hasn't done anything. He explains to
  104. Sinclair that they are both inside a "cerebral matrix" (a "virtual-reality
  105. cybernet"). "It's shadow-play," explains Knight Two,
  106. "without form or substance. But I'm real, commander, and you're
  107. real. And the pain--the pain for you is also real." Knight Two
  108. steps back, and a "cerebral discharge" surrounds Sinclair, putting
  109. him through agonizing pain.
  110. <p> Garibaldi has rushed to Sinclair's quarters. When he enters
  111. the quarters, however, he finds them empty. Alarmed, he contacts
  112. Ivanova and explains the situation to her.
  113. <p> Knight Two, outside the matrix, orders Knight One to cut the
  114. cerebral discharge. Inside the matrix, he begins to speak with
  115. Sinclair again. He notices how important the station is to
  116. Sinclair--how his thoughts seem to be rooted in Babylon 5. He
  117. explains to Sinclair that they will "walk together across the
  118. bridge of synapses and neurons into the very heart of your
  119. memories" in order to find the truth about what happened to
  120. Sinclair at the Battle of the Line. Knight Two tells Sinclair that
  121. he doesn't believe the testimony that Sinclair gave to Earth Force
  122. Defense after the war: that, during the twenty-four hour period
  123. where he was out of contact with Earth Force Defense, he merely
  124. blacked out. "We're finally going to get to the truth," Knight Two
  125. says, "even if it kills you."
  126. <p> Garibaldi, Ivanova, and Dr. Franklin are discussing strategies
  127. to find Sinclair. Garibaldi has organized a search party, drawn
  128. from all nonessential B5 personnel, but that the search still might
  129. take a few days. Franklin warns that "a few days" might be too
  130. long if Sinclair were injured. Ivanova has contacted a nearby
  131. station and asked them to track any ships that have left B5 in the
  132. last eight hours. Garibaldi suggests that they also send a few
  133. maintenance "bots" to patrol the hull of B5--"If someone shoved
  134. [Sinclair's body] outside, the station's gravity won't let it get
  135. far. Just in case."
  136. <p> "Mr. Garibaldi," Ivanova replies, "there are days I'm very
  137. glad I don't have to think the way you do."
  138. <p> Meanwhile, inside Sinclair's mind, Knight Two is continuing
  139. his probing into Sinclair's mind. "Your name is Jeffrey David
  140. Sinclair. Rank: commander. Age: 39. Born on Mars Colony, May 3,
  141. 2218, 9:15 A.M., Earth Standard Time. Enlisted in Earth Force
  142. Defense, 2237; promoted to fighter pilot, 2240; promoted again to
  143. squad leader less than a year later.... Smart money said you'd make
  144. admiral one day. So what happened, <em>commander</em>? Why'd you
  145. fall off the merry-go-round?"
  146. <p>
  147. <a href="/lurk/ftp/Pictures/Scenes/jsdrill.jpg"><img
  148. src="/lurk/gif/008/jsdrill.gif" align="middle"></a>Sinclair listens to his
  149. dossier.
  150. <p> Sinclair merely tells him to "go to hell." He refuses to tell
  151. Knight Two anything. "I'm betting you don't have a lot of time.
  152. Security's probably tearing this place upside down, looking for
  153. me."
  154. <p> "Assuming you're still on Babylon 5," replies Knight Two.
  155. Proceeding with his search for information, Knight Two tries to get
  156. Sinclair to reveal "the truth" by conjuring up an image of
  157. Mitchell, Sinclair's old friend and fellow officer who died in the
  158. Battle of the Line. Knight Two's plan appears to be working,
  159. because as soon as Sinclair sees Mitchell, his old memories of the
  160. Battle of the Line spring to the forefront of his mind. Sinclair
  161. relives the battle--he sees again what he saw in his dream, except
  162. that this time, he actually sees Mitchell's ship exploding. After
  163. that part of the battle plays itself out, Mitchell begins to speak
  164. with Sinclair again. At first, Sinclair refuses to speak with
  165. Mitchell; he tells himself that Mitchell's image is just an
  166. illusion. When Mitchell, however, accuses Sinclair of being a
  167. traitor ("We fought for you. We fought beside you on the Line. We
  168. swore we would all go down together, but you're alive, and we're
  169. dead, because of you!" says Mitchell), Sinclair feels that he has
  170. to respond. He replies, "I tried! I tried!"
  171. <p> "Tried to do what, commander?" asks Knight Two.
  172. <p> Sinclair answers by reliving the part of the Battle of the
  173. Line where he tries to ram the Minbari cruiser. Knight Two urges
  174. Sinclair to continue because, as Sinclair himself said, all of the
  175. incidents which Knight Two has seen so far were in Sinclair's
  176. original report of the battle ten years ago. Sinclair, however,
  177. claims that he cannot continue--"I don't remember. I blacked out.
  178. I've never been able to remember!"
  179. <p> Knight Two moves closer to Sinclair. "You don't want to
  180. remember! You don't want to remember the twenty-four hours in
  181. which you betrayed your own race. The day you became a traitor.
  182. The day you sold out--"
  183. <p> "That's enough!" screams Sinclair. As he says this, he
  184. suddenly hits Knight Two in the stomach. Knight Two, taken by
  185. surprise, vanishes from the matrix without a trace. "Well, well.
  186. Looks like the pain is real for both of us," comments Sinclair.
  187. <p> Delenn is talking with Ivanova; Delenn explains how concerned she
  188. is and offers her assistance in finding Sinclair, but Ivanova says
  189. that they're already doing everything they can to find Sinclair.
  190. Delenn suggests the use of the station's telepath, Talia Winters,
  191. but Ivanova explains that Winters is only a P-5 and, consequently,
  192. needs to be in close proximity with people in order to scan them.
  193. Winter's isn't trained, according to Ivanova, for a search-and-recover
  194. mission.
  195. <p> Knight One, meanwhile, is concerned about Knight Two, who
  196. snapped out of the cybernet suddenly. Knight Two, however, claims
  197. that he's all right. He says that he needs to be put back into the
  198. cybernet quickly, for Sinclair was right--they don't have much
  199. time. Knight One estimates that the search parties on the station
  200. will find them on B5 in about four hours. "He's tough. Breaking
  201. him isn't going to be easy," says Knight Two. Knight Two orders
  202. Knight One to increase both the power of the cybernet and the
  203. dosage of psychotropic drugs with which Sinclair is being injected.
  204. "We're close.... The more I walk through his mind, the more I'm
  205. convinced he's hiding something," explains Knight Two.
  206. <p> One of the security officers is giving a report to Garibaldi.
  207. He explains how, although the search teams have covered a lot of
  208. territory, there still is no sign of Sinclair. Garibaldi orders
  209. the officer to split the search teams into even smaller units--he
  210. also orders the officer to bring in every possible available
  211. officer. The officer explains how he's already brought in
  212. everyone--"even Benson." Garibaldi is annoyed that Benson was
  213. brought back to duty, but the security officer explains that he
  214. checked Benson's record, and Benson isn't in any debts. In fact,
  215. he says, there's even a surplus in Benson's account. Garibaldi,
  216. however, is suspicious, for the other day, the account was empty.
  217. He checks the account again and finds that one very large deposit
  218. was made, followed by numerous withdrawals. Garibaldi assumes that
  219. these withdrawals were used to pay off debts--and notes that the
  220. large deposit was made only four hours before Sinclair was known to
  221. be missing. Garibaldi orders the security officer to find and
  222. bring back Benson for questioning.
  223. <p> Knight Two has reentered the cybernet. Again, he asks
  224. Sinclair for the truth about the Battle of the Line. Sinclair
  225. suddenly finds himself surrounded by a circle of people wearing
  226. grey cloaks. "What are you doing here?" he asks. "What do you
  227. want?" Before he receives an answer, however, one of the grey
  228. figures shoots him.
  229. <p> Meanwhile, Benson has arrived at Knight Two's quarters. When
  230. Knight One answers the door, Benson frantically asks for protection.
  231. "You've got to help me. The whole station's looking for me.
  232. They think I had something to do with the commander's disapp--"
  233. Suddenly, Benson hears a scream from the back of the room. He
  234. curiously enters the quarters and is surprised to find Commander
  235. Sinclair attached to the cybernet device. He's not given the
  236. chance to think about it for too long, however, for Knight One
  237. shoots Benson almost immediately.
  238. <p> Back in the cybernet, Knight Two confronts Sinclair about the
  239. grey figures. He asks Sinclair to reveal what he's hiding, but
  240. Sinclair insists that he's not hiding anything.
  241. <p> "We all hide things, commander. That's why we bounced back
  242. [to the station] again, isn't it? This is where you hide, behind
  243. duty and responsibility and obligation," says Knight Two.
  244. <p> "Things you'd never understand!" replies Sinclair.
  245. <p> Knight Two disagrees, however. "We're both patriots in our
  246. own way. If I fail, more will come after me until the job is
  247. finished." He presses Sinclair again, telling him that they're
  248. going to find out what Sinclair is hiding.
  249. <p> Some security officers have found a body floating outside the
  250. hull of Babylon 5. The body turns out to be Benson's.
  251. <p> Meanwhile, in the cybernet, Knight Two is again expressing his
  252. disbelief at Sinclair's rendition of the events at the Line.
  253. Knight Two asserts that Sinclair could not have simply blacked out,
  254. for his ship "disappeared" from the sensing screens. Sinclair,
  255. however, counters that the postwar hearings proved that the screens
  256. malfunctioned. Knight Two explains what he believes to be the
  257. sequence of events that occurred at the Line: The Minbari (Knight
  258. Two says) realized the extent and power of Earth Force defense and
  259. realized how difficult it would be to invade Earth. Therefore,
  260. they surrendered and decided to work through more covert means. At
  261. the Battle of the Line, Sinclair surrendered to the Minbari rather
  262. than give up his life. The Minbari took him aboard and asked him
  263. to work for them--to be a covert operative. "You agreed [to work
  264. for them]. You and God-knows-how-many-other people."
  265. <p> "You're insane. I never betrayed Earth," insists Sinclair,
  266. but Knight Two questions him--if Sinclair doesn't remember what
  267. happened, how can he be sure he wasn't a traitor?
  268. <p> Sinclair, however, becomes annoyed with Knight Two: "That's
  269. enough! You talk about the war. You talk about Mitchell and the
  270. rest, but you didn't know them. They were my friends. I watched
  271. them die, one by one. For years afterwards, whenever I saw a
  272. Minbari, I had to fight the urge to strangle them with my bare
  273. hands.... We never had a chance.... When I looked at those ships,
  274. I didn't just see my death. I saw the death of the whole damn
  275. human race."
  276. <p> "Then why did they surrender?" asks Knight Two.
  277. <p> "I don't know. Maybe the universe blinked. Maybe God changed
  278. his mind. All I know is that we got a second chance."
  279. <p>
  280. <a name="minbari-assassin">
  281. Knight Two is still skeptical. He asks Sinclair if anything
  282. has ever made him doubt his story--that he simply "blacked out."
  283. Sinclair replies that nothing ever made him question it--except for
  284. what the Minbari who tried to kill Ambassador Kosh said to
  285. him: "There is a hole in your mind."
  286. </a>
  287. (cf: <a href="/lurk/guide/000.html">"The Gathering"</a>)
  288. At Knight Two's further prompting--and after Knight Two convinces
  289. Sinclair that Sinclair, himself, wants to know what happened--
  290. Sinclair allows his memories to overcome him again. He again
  291. experiences the Battle of the Line. He sees what he has seen
  292. before; except, this time, the take him further. The Minbari
  293. cruiser stops his attempt to ram into it. The cruiser uses some
  294. type of energy field to pull Sinclair's ship in. Sinclair is taken
  295. aboard the cruiser and transported to a room where a bunch of grey
  296. figures stand. At first, he is hanging in the air, arms bound to
  297. the bottom of a triangular metal frame. One of the figures holds
  298. up a small metal device (cf.
  299. <a href="/lurk/guide/020.html">"Babylon Squared"</a>) that shimmers
  300. with some kind of energy.
  301. <p>
  302. Later, the grey figures form a circle around Sinclair, who has been
  303. freed.
  304. Suddenly, he moves over to one of the grey figures and pulls back
  305. the veil that covers the figure's face. "I know you. I know who
  306. you are. I <em>know</em> you," says Sinclair. Before he can say any
  307. more, however, another grey figure shoots him and knocks him out.
  308. <p> Outside the cybernet, however, Sinclair gathers up enough
  309. strength to break the shackles that bind him to the cybernet
  310. device. As he disconnects from the machine, the feedback knocks
  311. out Knight Two. Knight One storms into the room, but Sinclair
  312. punches him, knocking him out. He picks up a gun and escapes from
  313. the room. He is delusional, however; he mumbles to himself about
  314. how the Minbari have broken through and how he must get back to his
  315. ship.
  316. <p> Sinclair begins running through B5's corridors. One officer,
  317. a member of the search party, sees Sinclair and beckons to him.
  318. Sinclair, however, in his delusional state, believes she is a
  319. Minbari and shoots at her. Fortunately, he does not kill her, and
  320. she links in with Ivanova. She begins to explain that she has seen
  321. the commander; however, before she can finish, Knight One shoots
  322. her in the back.
  323. <p> Knight One follows Sinclair; they shoot at each other
  324. unsuccessfully. Garibaldi finally finds Sinclair, but is utterly
  325. surprised when he is shot at by his commander. Dr. Franklin, a few
  326. seconds later, links in and informs Garibaldi that he has found the
  327. room where he believes Sinclair was held. Franklin believes that
  328. Sinclair may have been given large dosages of psychotropic drugs
  329. and may consequently be delusional or even dangerous.
  330. <p>
  331. <a name="recognize-delenn">
  332. As Garibaldi is hiding under a table, Delenn enters the room
  333. and approaches Sinclair slowly. She ignores Garibaldi's warnings
  334. and continues her approach. When she gets close enough to
  335. Sinclair, she tells him that he's safe now and that nobody will
  336. harm him. He doesn't listen to her, however; he can only picture
  337. the unveiling of the grey figure ten years ago--the grey figure who
  338. he now knows to be Delenn, though she looked younger then and had
  339. a silver triangle on her forehead. "I know you!" he tells her.
  340. </a>
  341. <p> "I'm your friend, commander. Ambassador Delenn. Your
  342. friend," she replies.
  343. <p> "No!" he says, as he raises his gun. For a moment, it appears
  344. as if he's going to shoot her. Instead, however, he points his gun
  345. in a slightly different direction and shoots Knight One, who had
  346. just arisen and was about to shoot at Sinclair. Knight One drops
  347. to the floor, dead.
  348. <p> "Welcome home," says Delenn.
  349. <p> One day later, Sinclair awakes in the medical lab. Dr.
  350. Franklin has finally flushed the psychotropic drugs from Sinclair's
  351. system. Sinclair asks to see Knight Two, who has been taken;
  352. Garibaldi replies, however, that Knight Two is about to leave the
  353. station. Earth Central has decided to exercise jurisdiction in
  354. this case because they believe Knight Two to be a member of an
  355. organization which wishes to implicate members of the government as
  356. being traitors to the Minbari (in fact, there are even rumors that
  357. the organization is a covert operation run from within the
  358. government itself). Franklin explains that he doesn't think the
  359. trial will reveal much, because when Sinclair disconnected himself
  360. from the cybernet device, the feedback "fried most of [Knight
  361. Two's] memory." Sinclair still, however, wishes to see his former
  362. captor. As expected, Knight Two reveals little information--in
  363. fact, he even claims that he cannot remember his own name.
  364. However, just as he's walking away from Sinclair, he turns around
  365. and says, "Commander Sinclair, there's something in my head. It
  366. says, 'Maybe you're still inside. Maybe we're both still inside.'"
  367. <p>
  368. <a name="delenn-knows">
  369. Sinclair goes to visit Delenn in her quarters. He thanks her
  370. for her help in rescuing him--he notes that it's strange that
  371. seeing her was the only thing that could help him. As he is about
  372. to leave her quarters, she asks him if he remembers anything
  373. concerning the Battle of the Line? He pictures in his mind the
  374. unveiling of the mysterious grey figure; aloud, however, he says
  375. that he cannot, unfortunately, remember anything.
  376. It is not clear whether Delenn knows he's lying or not.
  377. </a>
  378. <a name="sinclair-kill">
  379. After Sinclair
  380. leaves, a Minbari man, silver triangle on his head, arrives from
  381. another room in Delenn's quarters.
  382. "He must <em>never</em> know what happened. If he should find
  383. out, he must be killed. Do you understand, Delenn?" says this man.
  384. </a>
  385. Delenn replies that she does, indeed, understand.
  386. <p> Sinclair, alone finally in his quarters, is making an entry in
