  1. <p> Jason Ironheart, Psi-Corps Level 10, has stolen a transport
  2. vessel but is being pursued. His pursuers order him to stop, but
  3. he ignores them. Suddenly, there is a strong explosion, and only
  4. one ship emerges: Ironheart's ship, headed toward Babylon 5.
  5. <p>
  6. <img src="/lurk/gif/006/ironheart-pursuit.gif" align=middle> Pursuing Ironheart.
  7. <p> On Babylon 5, Sinclair and Catherine Sakai, his girlfriend,
  8. have just woken up. Catherine explains that she's working on
  9. finalizing a contract with Universal Terraform, an important
  10. corporation from Earth.
  11. <p> Meanwhile, Ironheart has arrived on Babylon 5.
  12. <p> Talia Winters is having a conversation with a businessman from
  13. Universal Terraform who wants to use her services in an upcoming
  14. negotiation. They enter an elevator (turbolift?) which Garibaldi
  15. is also currently using. The businessman asks what it's like to be
  16. a telepath; Winters responds that it's often difficult to block out
  17. the thoughts around her--while casual thoughts are simple to
  18. ignore, strong emotions can somehow break through whatever mental
  19. barriers she can set up. Suddenly, she turns around at Garibaldi
  20. (who has been experiencing his own "strong emotions" while staring
  21. at Winters) and elbows him in the stomach.
  22. <p> Elsewhere on the station, Bester and Kelsey, two Level-12
  23. "Psi-Cops," have just come aboard Babylon 5. They telepathically
  24. "ask" a minor official to bring them to Sinclair.
  25. <p> Catherine Sakai is meeting with the businessman from Universal
  26. Terraform--the businessman who has brought Winters along. The
  27. businessman is concerned with the confidentiality of the planet
  28. which Catherine wishes to survey (because the planet, known as
  29. Sigma-957, may have some deposits of Quantium-40, a material
  30. important to the construction of jumpgates)--and so, following
  31. orders from his superiors, he asks Sakai to promise not to mention
  32. the planet to anyone--not even Sinclair. He has brought Winters
  33. along to verify that Sakai is telling the truth when she says she
  34. will not tell anyone about the planet--and, indeed, Winters does
  35. confirm this. The businessman also notes that, since the planet in
  36. question is in a contested region of space, they need the consent
  37. of one other major party--in this case, G'Kar, representing the
  38. Narn, will give that consent and will collaborate concerning Sigma-957.
  39. <p> Bester and Kelsey arrive at Sinclair's office, and begin to
  40. have a telepathic conversation with him. Sinclair gets quite
  41. annoyed, telling them that he doesn't like people "rummaging around
  42. in my head." He questions them, asking about the rules governing
  43. such use of telepathic abilities. They tell him that they are
  44. psi-cops, and because of their important responsibilities, they are
  45. given a wider latitude than other telepaths. They tell Sinclair
  46. that they are on a mission to track down a rogue telepath--one who
  47. may be putting the Earth Alliance's military structure at tremendous risk. Sinclair is hesitant to offer assistance, but they insist
  48. that he hold a meeting with the station's resident telepath
  49. (Winters), as well as security and command personnel.
  50. <p>
  51. <img src="/lurk/gif/006/psi-cops.gif" align=middle> Bester and Kelsey consult
  52. Sinclair.
  53. <p> Ironheart is standing in his newly-rented quarters when he
  54. suddenly appears to get a terrible headache. He clutches his head,
  55. but is apparently unable to make the pain go away. Suddenly, the
  56. entire room starts shaking, almost as if to reflect his pain.
  57. <p> The meeting that Bester and Kelsey requested has begun.
  58. Winters, Ivanova, Garibaldi, and Sinclair are present. Bester asks
  59. Winters if she knows (or ever knew) Ironheart; she replies that
  60. Ironheart was her instructor in the Psi-Corps Training Academy.
  61. Kelsey explains that one year before, Ironheart had been reassigned
  62. to work on a covert operation with Earth Force Military Intelligence.
  63. Bester and Kelsey refuse, however, to explain the nature of
  64. his covert operation. They only say that what is in Ironheart's
  65. brain would compromise Earth Force's position and possibly lead to
  66. the deaths of covert operatives on other worlds; they believe that
  67. Ironheart wishes to sell this information to alien governments.
  68. They refuse to give any other information (particularly, they
  69. refuse to tell Sinclair what type of danger Ironheart poses to the
  70. station); they only Sinclair to find and bring back Ironheart
  71. ("Alive if possible; dead if necessary")--"We'll do the rest." The
  72. Psi-Cops asks Winters if she has had any contact with Ironheart;
  73. she replies that, since she left the academy, they have
  74. corresponded only through letters. The Psi-Cops, however, do not believe
  75. her--they order her to submit to a mental scan so that they can be
  76. sure of what she's saying. She cringes at the possibility, for
  77. mental scans can be quite painful--nonetheless, she is forced to
  78. comply. The scan is performed, and the Psi-Cops are surprised to
  79. find that Winters has been speaking the truth. "Surprising," says
  80. Kelsey, "given their prior involvement." The Psi-Cops then leave,
  81. ordering everyone (but especially Winters) not to speak with or
  82. approach Ironheart if he is found on the station.
  83. <p> A short time after Winters has left the meeting, Ironheart
  84. approaches her in dark corridor. She attempts to leave quickly,
  85. explaining that she was ordered not to see him. He says that he is
  86. aware of the Psi-Cops (and also that he was aware of their scan of
  87. her mind--which is why he waited until after the scan to contact
  88. her), and promises to simply explain the whole situation to Winters
  89. if she'll give him the chance.
  90. <p> Sakai, meanwhile, is quite annoyed at G'Kar's involvement with
  91. the mission at Sigma-957. He explains that he has involved himself
  92. only in order to protect Sakai--"Sigma-957 is not a healthy place.
  93. Strange things happen there." Sakai, however, doesn't believe him,
  94. and explains that she thinks he and the Narn just want Sigma-957
  95. for themselves. He denies her suspicions, telling her that she
  96. shouldn't believe everything she's heard about G'Kar--"No one here
  97. is exactly what he appears," says G'Kar. "Not Mollari, Delenn, not
  98. Sinclair, and not me. My warning is sincere; ignore it at your own
  99. peril." She still, however, doesn't believe him, saying that she
  100. will, if necessary, "go over his head" and communicate with her own
  101. contacts in the Narn regime.
  102. <p> Ironheart, in Winters's quarters, explains that one year
  103. before, he volunteered for an ambitious Psi-Corps experiment--an
  104. experiment that, if successful, would greatly increase the powers
  105. of telepaths. He volunteered because he was told that the
  106. experiment was necessary for Earth Force Defense--each race wants
  107. to make sure that its telepaths are powerful enough. After months
  108. of the experiment, his telepathic abilities expanded beyond his
  109. belief--he could "cut through any block without even trying--all I
  110. had to do was to look at them." However, such development was a
  111. mixed blessing, because he finally realized the true purpose of the
  112. experiment: to develop "stable" telekinesis. Winters recalls the
  113. telekinesis tests she took at the academy--"I tried for days to
  114. make [a penny] move with my thoughts; I couldn't do it." He
  115. explains that only one in every thousand humans is telepathic; and
  116. only one out of every ten-thousand telepaths is telekinetic--but
  117. that half of these telekinetics are clinically insane. But the
  118. experiment was successful, says Ironheart, "It worked beyond
  119. anyone's wildest dreams."
  120. <p>
  121. <img src="/lurk/gif/006/talia-ironheart.gif" align=middle> Ironheart and
  122. Winters.
  123. <p> Garibaldi tells Sinclair that he has found something which
  124. might help him track down Ironheart: one of the ships which
  125. recently arrived at Babylon 5 was a stolen transport that came from
  126. Ironheart's previous location. Garibaldi says that he is checking
  127. the guest quarters on the station. He comments that he's working
  128. as quickly as possible--he doesn't like the idea of rogue telepaths
  129. <strong>or</strong> Psi-Cops on the station. "There's just something creepy about
  130. [Psi-Cops]," explains Garibaldi, "The way they look at you like
  131. you're some kind of bug." Just then, Bester arrives on the bridge,
  132. and Garibaldi leaves relatively quickly. Bester stares at
  133. Garibaldi as he's walking away and "replies," somewhat annoyed,
  134. "Anatomically impossible, Mr. Garibaldi, but you're welcome to try,
  135. any time, anywhere."
  136. <p> Meanwhile, Sakai is on her way to Sigma-957.
  137. <p> G'Kar is in his quarters, speaking on a secure channel with
  138. Narn Military Headquarters. He says he requires a well-armed heavy
  139. fighter for a mission to Sigma-957.
  140. <p> Ironheart, still in Winters's quarters, explains to Winters
  141. that at first, he thought that the Psi-Corps wanted telekinesis for
  142. "big jobs"--heavy construction in 0-G, telekinetic shields on
  143. ships. He explains that the Psi-Corps, however, wanted increased
  144. control of smaller objects--the smaller the better. If precise
  145. control over small objects were perfected, telekinetics could
  146. become the ideal assassins: "Murder without a trace. No fingerprints,
  147. no poisons." Suddenly, as he speaks, the room begins to
  148. shake again. He tells Winters to run--to leave the room quickly --
  149. for he cannot control this side-effect of his new telekinetic
  150. powers. This time, however, it's not just his room that starts to
  151. shake--it's an entire section of Babylon 5.
  152. <p> Sinclair is walking with Bester and Kelsey when the vibrations
  153. reach him. The Psi-Cops immediately recognize the situation as a
  154. "mind-quake." When Sinclair finds Garibaldi, Garibaldi comments
  155. that he has pinpointed the source of the disturbance, but that the
  156. entire level of the station where the disturbance is coming from is
  157. blocked by some type of energy shield. Sinclair angrily mentions
  158. that, when he asked Bester what type of danger Ironheart represented,
  159. Bester replied that Sinclair didn't need to know. He calls a
  160. meeting with Bester and Kelsey.
  161. <p> Sinclair accuses the Psi-Cops of placing the station in danger
  162. by withholding information from Sinclair. They merely reply that
  163. they were following orders, but Sinclair dismisses that excuse. He
  164. confronts the Psi-Cops, ordering them to explain the precise danger
  165. that Ironheart poses. Bester only replies that Ironheart is no
  166. longer entirely "human"--other than that, the Psi-Corps doesn't
  167. know exactly what he is.
  168. <p> Ironheart is meanwhile sitting in the middle of the rubble
  169. caused by his telekinesis. He is trying, with some success, to
  170. calm his thoughts down and stop the accidental destruction.
  171. <p> At the meeting between Sinclair, Ivanova, Bester, and Kelsey,
  172. Bester explains the basics of Ironheart's experiment to Sinclair.
  173. Bester says that, toward the end of the experiment, Ironheart began
  174. to show signs of paranoia, stress, and psychosis. One night,
  175. Ironheart left his room, killed the head researcher of the
  176. experiment, and escaped. Kelsey comments that Ironheart's
  177. telekinetic abilities grew stronger and more violent as time
  178. progressed. Bester tells Sinclair that Ironheart, in his present
  179. state, is a valuable commodity--and the Psi-Corps cannot allow him
  180. to fall into the hands of any alien government. He adds that the
  181. Psi-Corps wanted to keep the whole incident quiet in order that
  182. alien governments not find out about Ironheart's abilities--this
  183. reason is why they withheld the information about Ironheart's
  184. condition. "It was a calculated risk," comments Bester. (Ivanova
  185. expresses her disgust with the way the Psi-Corps have no ethical
  186. problem with taking inhumane, calculated risks). Sinclair asks how
  187. the Psi-Cops plan to stop Ironheart if he is so powerful. They
  188. explain that, during the experiment, Ironheart was programmed with
  189. a "fail-safe code," which, when sent into his brain by a powerful
  190. telepath, has the ability to shut down Ironheart--to "put him to
  191. sleep"--but not kill him. Bester and Kelsey believe that, between
  192. the two of them, they will be able to overcome any defenses that
  193. Ironheart has set up--but they can only send the fail-safe code if
  194. Ironheart is in their line of sight.
  195. <p> Winters walks up to one of the shields that Ironheart has set
  196. up around the level of B5 which was shaken by his thoughts. She
  197. tries to speak with him--to shout to him through the shields. When
  198. he hears (or senses) her, he drops the shields for a moment so that
  199. she can pass through. When she finally arrives to where Jason is
  200. standing, he is glad to see her. He explains that he came to
  201. Babylon 5 in order to see her--that he felt that being with her
  202. would be enough to calm his thoughts, "shut out the voices," and
  203. rest "for a little while ... before the end." He admits that he
  204. shouldn't have come to the station--he has inadvertently put people
  205. at risk, though he didn't want to hurt anyone. He tells Winters
  206. what he has learned of the Psi-Corps--that, although people believe
  207. that the government controls the Corps, the reverse is coming to be
  208. true. "[The Psi-Corps is] more powerful than you can begin to
  209. imagine. Telepaths make the ultimate blackmailers, Talia. I've
  210. seen it all." He tells Winters that he is currently undergoing a
  211. tremendous change--and that he is no longer Jason Ironheart.
  212. <p> Sakai has finally arrived at Sigma-957. She enters into an
  213. orbit above the planet and beings to conduct environmental
  214. research. She laughs to herself about G'Kar's warnings concerning
  215. Sigma-957.
  216. <p>
  217. <img src="/lurk/gif/006/skydancer-probe.gif" align=middle> The Skydancer
  218. launches a probe.
  219. <p> Winters, after leaving Ironheart, finds Sinclair and tells him
  220. that she has seen Ironheart. She requests to speak with Sinclair
  221. privately; he agrees. When they are in private, she explains the
  222. situation to Sinclair. She tells Sinclair that Ironheart wants to
  223. see him. Sinclair asks what exactly was between Ironheart and
  224. her--why he came to this station. She explains that they had been
  225. lovers--and that Ironheart came to B5 to see Winters. "He was
  226. everything to me--the perfect model of what it meant to be in the
  227. Corps. Do you know what it's like when telepaths make love,
  228. commander? You drop every defense, and it's all mirrors.... It's
  229. a feeling so profound it makes you hurt. It's the only moment in
  230. a telepath's life when you no longer hear the voices. He came to
  231. say goodbye, commander."
  232. <p> Meanwhile, Sakai, at Sigma-957, suddenly sees <strong>something</strong> near
  233. Sigma-957. Neither she nor her computer can identify it, but her
  234. computer's power level is reduced drastically. Her orbit is
  235. decaying, and she will crash into the planet in less than two
  236. hours. She tries to open an emergency channel with Babylon 5, but
  237. there is not enough power to establish a link.
  238. <p> Sinclair and Winters arrive to where Ironheart is sitting. He
  239. greets Sinclair politely, but gets rights into the purpose of his
  240. discussion. "The Psi-Corps is dedicated to one thing, commander:
  241. control." He explains to Sinclair what he had previously explained
  242. to Winters. "But there is something even more powerful--something
  243. they didn't even know existed until I crossed the line. Not mind
  244. over matter, mind over energy.... I look at you, commander, and I
  245. see not a man, but a galaxy of subatomic particles which I can ...
  246. rearrange with a casual thought." Ironheart explains that he feels
  247. humans aren't ready for these types of powers; but if the Psi-Corps
  248. find him and bring him back, they will study him to try to figure
  249. out the combination of drugs which caused this phenomenon.
  250. <p> Sinclair, however, asks why he should trust Ironheart over the
  251. Psi-Cops. Ironheart explains that if he meant any harm, he could
  252. vaporize Sinclair instantly. When Sinclair mentions that Ironheart
  253. has already caused harm and destruction on the station, Ironheart
  254. explains that the "mind-quake" was an accident. Ironheart claims
  255. he never wanted to hurt anyone; however, as his telekinetic powers
  256. expand, it takes him a while to learn how to control them.
  257. Sinclair mentions the head researcher that Bester said Ironheart
  258. killed; Ironheart claims that he didn't want to kill the researcher--but
  259. since that researcher was the only one who could duplicate
  260. the experiment, he had no choice. "There must never be any more
  261. like me," he says earnestly. Ironheart explains that he only wants
  262. Sinclair's trust--and a little bit of help. He says that he needs
  263. to leave the station so that he can be free to become whatever it
  264. is that he's becoming. At length, Sinclair agrees, and arranges
  265. with Ivanova and Garibaldi to escort Ironheart off the station to
  266. the stolen transport which is docked outside.
  267. <p> Meanwhile, very soon before Sakai's ship would have burned up
  268. in the atmosphere of Sigma-957, Sakai's computer detects the
  269. arrival of two ships. The ships open a communication channel with
  270. her--they explain to her they are Narn vessels dispatched on the
  271. order of G'Kar to rescue her in the event that anything strange
  272. should happen in Sigma-957. They grapple Sakai's ship and escort
  273. it back to Babylon 5.
  274. <p> Bester and Kelsey have meanwhile discovered that Sinclair is
  275. attempting to escort Ironheart off of the station. They meet up
  276. with Ironheart as he is trying to escape; they attempt to send the
  277. fail-safe code, but Ironheart's defenses are too powerful.
  278. Ironheart is, however, forced to kill Kelsey in the struggle. He
  279. successfully escapes from Bester, then enters his ship and leaves
  280. the station.
  281. <p>
  282. <img src="/lurk/gif/006/bester.gif" align=middle> Bester takes a shot
  283. at Ironheart.
  284. <p> Sinclair and Winters, along with Garibaldi and Ivanova, watch
  285. Ironheart's ship leave Babylon 5. Shortly after, the station's
  286. sensors detect a strong energy surge; suddenly, Ironheart's ship is
  287. no longer there, and in its place is a strange configuration of
  288. floating energy. The energy entity--the new Jason Ironheart--
  289. speaks with Winters on the bridge. As a parting gesture, he gives
  290. her "the only gift I have to give"--suddenly, a bright flow of
  291. energy enters Winters's head, knocking her unconscious.
  292. <p> "Goodbye, commander," says Ironheart, "I will see you again in
  293. a million years."
  294. <p> Afterwards, Sinclair is speaking with a somewhat-depressed
  295. Bester, who complains that his superiors will believe none of what
  296. just happened. Sinclair agrees, "Especially since in about an
  297. hour, we'll have a small accident in data storage that'll erase the
  298. file you just saw." Garibaldi suggests an alternative report:
  299. "That Ironheart's ship escaped Babylon 5 but exploded before it
  300. could enter the jumpgate." If Bester refuses to use this suggestion
  301. in his report, Sinclair threatens that he will make it known
  302. how Bester withheld information, put the station in danger, and,
  303. through his interference, cause the death of his fellow Psi-Cop.
  304. Sinclair also makes Bester promise to have his report indicate that
  305. Winters was under Ironheart's control during the incident--and that
  306. she was not responsible for her actions during the incident.
  307. Bester agrees reluctantly and leaves quietly.
  308. <p> After Bester leaves, Garibaldi asks Sinclair if Sinclair will
  309. report to "the senator" (probably the senator with whom Sinclair
  310. communicates periodically) what Ironheart accused the Psi-Corps of.
  311. Sinclair says that he doesn't think it will do any good--Ironheart
  312. was feverish and paranoid, so what he said might not be true. Even
  313. if it is true, without Ironheart available to testify, it would
  314. just be his word versus that of the Corps. However, they agree to
  315. keep their eyes open for anything threatening. Garibaldi then
  316. wonders out loud what Ironheart's gift to Winters was. Sinclair
  317. comments that he doesn't think she would tell Garibaldi even if he
  318. were to ask.
  319. <p> Meanwhile, Winters is in her quarters. She has placed a penny
  320. on the table, and when she focuses on it, she finds that he can
  321. make it move using only her thoughts....
  322. <p> Catherine Sakai has arrived safely with the help of the Narn
  323. ships. She finds G'Kar and thanks him for his help. She asks him,
  324. however, why he went to the trouble of rescuing her. "Why not?" he
  325. replies. When she comments that that isn't an answer, G'Kar
  326. replies, "Oh, yes it is. It's simply not an answer you like or the
  327. answer your expected. There's a difference. Narns, humans,
  328. Centauri--we all do what we do for the same reason: because it
  329. seemed like a good idea at the time. There was no profit--no
  330. advantage--in letting you fall to an untimely and most uncomfortable
  331. death. It would distress the commander to no good end." She
  332. seems to accept this reason, then asks if G'Kar knew what it was
  333. that she saw near Sigma-957. He explains that it is a phenomenon
  334. which they cannot explain: "There are things in the universe
  335. billions of years older than either of our races. They are vast,
  336. timeless ... They are a mystery, and I am both terrified and
  337. reassured to know that there are still wonders in the universe--
  338. that we have not yet explained everything. Whatever they are, Ms.
  339. Sakai, they walk near Sigma-957. They must walk there alone."
  340. Catherine only stares in wonder.
