  1. <p> <cite>Midnight on the Firing Line</cite>, as well as the Babylon 5
  2. series, starts out at the Ragesh 3 colony, a Centauri agricultural
  3. colony. The colony finds itself suddenly under attack. As the
  4. station in orbit around the colony is about to contact its home
  5. world, Centauri Prime, the station is destroyed.
  6. <p>
  7. <img src="/lurk/gif/001/attacking-raghesh.gif" align=middle> The attack
  8. on Ragesh 3.
  9. <p> Meanwhile, on the Babylon 5 station. Lt. Commander Susan
  10. Ivanova, the new officer who is second in command of the station,
  11. interrupts the only quiet, restful part of Commander Jeffrey
  12. Sinclair's day--a time when he shuts off his comm-link and
  13. "escapes" from the rigor of his life. "There's a problem," she
  14. tells him.
  15. <p> Elsewhere on the station, Centauri Ambassador Londo Mollari is
  16. having a pleasant conversation with Security Chief Michael
  17. Garibaldi when Londo receives word that the Ragesh 3 colony has
  18. been attacked. He's informed, however, that nobody knows who the
  19. attackers are.
  20. <p> Londo and Sinclair meet concerning the incident. Sinclair
  21. tells Londo that Earth doesn't know anything more about the
  22. incident--the identity of the attackers is still a great mystery.
  23. Ambassadors Delenn (of the Minbari) and G'Kar (of the Narn), offer
  24. their condolences and also claim to know very little about the
  25. attack. Sinclair suggests that an emergency meeting of the Council
  26. be called to discuss the matter and lend aid to the Centauri
  27. colony.
  28. <p> Shortly after, on the bridge, Ivanova informs Garibaldi that
  29. they've received a distress signal from a trading ship near the
  30. station. She says that at first, she thought the incident might
  31. have had something to do with the Ragesh 3 incident, but that,
  32. instead, the ship claims to have been attacked by "raiders."
  33. Garibaldi takes a fighter out to try to come to the aid of the ship
  34. that was attacked. Right after Garibaldi leaves the bridge, Talia
  35. Winters--the commercial telepath on the station--enters the bridge
  36. and wants to speak with Ivanova. She says that because of Psi
  37. Corps regulations, she must report with the second in command, but
  38. that she hasn't been able to find Ivanova for quite a while.
  39. Ivanova rudely dismisses Talia, saying that she's rather busy right
  40. now.
  41. <p> Meanwhile, Sinclair is in his office, watching on "television"
  42. the latest news about the upcoming presidential election. Ivanova
  43. enters, and Sinclair informs her that there is not yet any further
  44. information on the Ragesh 3 incident. Ivanova notices the telecast
  45. and finds out from Sinclair that the presidential race is very
  46. close at the moment.
  47. <p> Londo is in his room when Vir, his gawky assistant, rushes in
  48. and tells him that a coded broadcast has just been received. As
  49. Vir shows the broadcast to Londo, Londo sees the incident that we
  50. saw at the beginning of the episode. He freezes the image of the
  51. broadcast and enhances the image of one of the attacking ships. He
  52. immediately recognizes it as a Narn warship, and heads out to
  53. confront his enemy G'Kar with this newly-found evidence.
  54. <p> Meanwhile, Garibaldi has found the ship that was attacked by
  55. the raiders. He finds it very badly damaged--and realizes that the
  56. weapons that were used to attack this ship must have been much
  57. stronger than the weapons the raiders have previously had.
  58. <p> Londo finds G'Kar and accuses him of deceit--since G'Kar said
  59. he previously knew nothing of the attack. G'Kar, somewhat
  60. surprisingly, tells Londo that he has just found out about the
  61. attack--but he confirms that it was indeed Narn forces that
  62. attacked Ragesh 3. "I'm sure there's some reasonable explanation,"
  63. he adds. Londo asks what reasonable explanation there could be for
  64. attacking a defenseless, agricultural colony. G'Kar refers Londo
  65. to a similar attack that the Centauri made years ago against Narn
  66. holdings--and expresses his indignity at the former Centauri
  67. subjugation of the Narn. One insult leads to the next, and a fight
  68. breaks out between the two ambassadors. The fight is eventually
  69. broken up by security personnel, but not before G'Kar threatens
  70. Londo that the Narn will eventually rise and destroy the Centauri.
  71. <p>
  72. <img src="/lurk/gif/001/wheel-turns-small.gif" align=middle>"The wheel turns, does it not, Ambassador?"
  73. <p> After the fight, Londo meets with Sinclair. He apologizes for
  74. his actions and says that he won't repeat the incident--but that he
  75. <em>will</em> eventually kill G'Kar. He explains that Centauri have
  76. strange premonitions of how, and even when, they will die--and that
  77. Londo has had a dream in which he will eventually die 20 years from
  78. now, with his hands wrapped around G'Kar's throat and vice-versa.
  79. Londo also explains that he had a nephew on Ragesh--a nephew for
  80. whom he deeply cares and is deeply concerned about. He vows that
  81. if his nephew has been harmed, there will be war--at any cost. He
  82. dismisses Sinclair's "galactic peace" arguments as nothing but
  83. silly paperwork and "games." "Only one thing matters: blood," says
  84. Londo.
  85. <p> Ivanova and Garibaldi are discussing the raiders' methods.
  86. Garibaldi says that trade routes are normally kept secret--to
  87. prevent the kind of attacks that recently happened--and Ivanova and
  88. Garibaldi come to the conclusion that there must be some leak of
  89. information from the trading companies.
  90. <p> Meanwhile, Sinclair goes to meet with Ambassador Kosh, the
  91. mysterious Vorlon representative who must wear an environmental
  92. suit at all times because of extreme differences between the
  93. Vorlons and the other races. Sinclair wants to know Kosh's
  94. position on the Ragesh incident, and asks Kosh if he will support
  95. sanctions against the Narn. "They are alone. They are a dying
  96. people; we should let them pass," enigmatically responds Kosh.
  97. "Who?" asks Sinclair. "The Narn or the Centauri?" Kosh's simple
  98. and almost humorous answer is merely "Yes."
  99. <p>
  100. <img src="/lurk/gif/001/sinclair-mask-small.gif" align=middle>Sinclair visits Kosh
  101. <a name="ivanova-console">
  102. <p> Garibaldi is meanwhile sitting at Ivanova's station on the
  103. bridge, researching the flight paths of the trading vessels. All
  104. incoming ships are tracked through Ivanova's console.
  105. </a>
  106. <p>
  107. Londo is lying down in his quarters, rather drunk. He is rather
  108. depressed, and tells Vir, his assistant, that he has received word
  109. from the Centauri government saying that they will do "nothing"
  110. about the attack on Ragesh. Londo is enraged--he feels that the
  111. Centauri government is made up of cowards, and he nostalgically
  112. pictures the former grandeur of his people--a grandeur that has all
  113. but evaporated. He suddenly gets the idea to ignore his government's
  114. message, and he forces Vir to comply with this. He tells
  115. Vir not to mention that the message was ever received--that if they
  116. can get the other powers to force sanctions against Narn, they can
  117. force their own government into cooperation. He says that he will
  118. go ahead with the emergency session of the Council--a session that
  119. will be used to decide on the actions to be taken against the Narn
  120. regime.
  121. <p> Talia Winters, in the meantime, finds herself in the elevator
  122. with Garibaldi. She tells him that she's upset that Ivanova is
  123. basically ignoring her, and she wants to know what she's done
  124. wrong. Garibaldi says that Ivanova takes a while to get to know
  125. people--especially while at work--and advises Talia to catch
  126. Ivanova in the casino after hours.
  127. <p> G'Kar and Sinclair meet in the station's arboretum. They have
  128. a sharp conversation where G'Kar tries to gain support for his
  129. people by telling Sinclair that the Narn race and humans are very
  130. much alike--and that, in fact, the Narn were one of the only people
  131. that were willing to supply weapons to the Earth in the Earth-Minbari
  132. war. Sinclair dismisses G'Kar's claim by saying that the
  133. Narn will simply supply weapons to anyone who can afford them--not
  134. out of any sense of brotherhood or similarity between cultures.
  135. Sinclair further criticizes the Narn cowardice because of their
  136. "sneak attack" on Ragesh. G'Kar is enraged.
  137. <p> Garibaldi presently finds that one trading company--which sold
  138. access to the "jump gates" that provide interstellar travel--seems
  139. to have had its information concerning the trade routes stolen from
  140. it. He informs Sinclair about these findings, and tells him that
  141. there's one ship which had bought routes from the company that was
  142. broken into and which still hasn't been attacked. Garibaldi says
  143. that they have only a few hours to come to the rescue of this ship.
  144. <p> Sinclair is meanwhile speaking with a representative of the
  145. government of the Earth Alliance--a superior of his. The representative
  146. is advising Sinclair to either delay the emergency session
  147. of the Council or to abstain from the vote; Earth cannot get
  148. involved in any type of war so soon before an election. Sinclair
  149. protests that this will hurt the Centauri case--that if Earth
  150. doesn't lend aid, others might not either. The representative
  151. doesn't seem to care, and closes the communications channel.
  152. During the conversation between Sinclair and the Earth official,
  153. Ivanova has arrived at Sinclair's room and has been standing
  154. outside of the door, waiting for Sinclair to finish. She has come
  155. to inform him that Garibaldi is going to leave on his mission to
  156. rescue the ship that was supposedly about to be attacked by the
  157. raiders. Suddenly, Sinclair seems to realize something about the
  158. allegedly-powerful raider weapons. He says that he will be
  159. replacing Garibaldi on the mission to rescue the ship. He orders
  160. Ivanova to continue the meeting; further, he tells her that she
  161. "never" heard the conversation that he had with the Earth official--and
  162. that as far as she last heard, Earth was voting for the
  163. sanctions, rather than abstaining.
  164. <p> As Sinclair leaves, the session of the Council is begun.
  165. G'Kar stands up and announces that the Narn regime has a valid
  166. claim to Ragesh 3 because the planet was originally Narn territory
  167. before it was invaded by the Centauri. Delenn succinctly rebuts
  168. this argument, saying that if the Narn hold a grudge for so long,
  169. peace will never come, and an endless cycle of wars will result.
  170. G'Kar claims that he doesn't want a war--he's only exercising a
  171. valid claim to the planet. Further, he claims that the Ragesh
  172. colony invited the Narn there--that the Narn never invaded the
  173. colony. To support this claim, he opens up a live link with
  174. Ragesh. Carn Mollari, Londo's nephew, appears on the screen and
  175. recites a message--clearly forced--saying that the Ragesh colony
  176. did indeed invite the Narn regime in to restore order in the
  177. colony. After the message is completed, Londo says that the
  178. message was clearly forced at gunpoint and is of no validity.
  179. However, G'Kar silences Londo by revealing that he knows that the
  180. Centauri government has taken the position that they will not
  181. intervene--he asks Londo why he is using the Council to enact a
  182. personal vendetta. G'Kar proceeds to call a vote to dismiss all
  183. charges against the Narn regime.
  184. <p> Sinclair is meanwhile pursuing the raiders. After successfully
  185. saving the trading ship, he outwits the raiders and finds their
  186. command base.
  187. <p>
  188. <img align=middle src="/lurk/gif/001/battle1-small.gif">The battle at the trading ship
  189. <p> If Londo was desperate before, he's certainly desperate now.
  190. He is entirely outraged at the preceding events in Council, and has
  191. decided to take matters into his own hands. He assembles a gun
  192. from parts that he's hidden around his quarters and proceeds to
  193. attempt to kill G'Kar. As he's walking toward G'Kar's quarters,
  194. however, he bumps into Talia, who, despite her training, accidentally
  195. senses Londo's intense, emotional thoughts. She quickly
  196. informs Garibaldi, who intervenes and stops Londo from committing
  197. the murder of G'Kar.
  198. <p> Sinclair has returned to Babylon 5 and carries evidence with
  199. which he immediately confronts G'Kar. Sinclair has found a Narn
  200. agent on the raiders' base; it seems that the Narn were supplying
  201. weapons to these raiders, and when Narn supply weapons, they always
  202. include a Narn agent to instruct their customers on how to use the
  203. weapons and to make sure that the weapons are not resold to a third
  204. party. Further, this Narn agent had been found with logs of the
  205. communication between the attacking force on Ragesh 3 and the Narn
  206. homeworld. The logs of this communication confirm that the attack
  207. was, indeed, uninvited and unprovoked. Faced with this evidence,
  208. G'Kar is forced to tell Narn to withdraw the forces from Ragesh.
  209. <p> Talia meanwhile has found Ivanova in the casino, just as
  210. Garibaldi advised. Talia asks Ivanova if she had done anything to
  211. offend her. Ivanova apologizes to Talia and admits that the acted
  212. rude.
  213. <a name="ivanova-mom">
  214. Ivanova explains that her mother was a telepath--however,
  215. she had kept this as a secret to herself and had never joined the
  216. Psi Corps. On her mother's 35th birthday, the Psi Corps caught up
  217. with her and gave her three alternatives: to either join the Corps,
  218. go to prison, or take telepathy-inhibiting drugs. She chose the
  219. latter; however, as Ivanova explains, the drugs were very strong
  220. and destroyed her mother's will and personality. After 10 years,
  221. after her family thought her mother could no longer survive, her
  222. mother took her own life.
  223. </a>
  224. Ivanova explains that she doesn't blame
  225. Talia as an individual for what happened to her mother, but says
  226. how these types of events are part of every member of the Psi
  227. Corps. However, Ivanova explains to Talia that Talia is just as
  228. much of a victim as Ivanova's mother was. When Talia responds that
  229. she does not feel like a victim, Ivanova rejoins that she hasn't
  230. yet figured out if that feeling is good or bad. When Talia
  231. suggests that they might start off on better terms the next day,
  232. Ivanova says that she very much doubts it.
  233. <p> In the meantime, Garibaldi is sitting in his quarters, showing
  234. Delenn his "second favorite thing in the universe"--old "Duck
  235. Dodgers in the 23rd-and-a-half century" cartoons.
  236. <p> Sinclair is resting in his quarters, watching with what
  237. appears to be disappointment that Santiago, the incumbent president,
  238. has been declared the victor of the election. As he is about
  239. to retire for the night, he receives a call from Ivanova:
  240. "Commander, there's a problem." It seems that a commander's job is
  241. never done ... in fact, it has just started.
