22. Babylon 5, designed to be a place of peace in a troubled universe, has
23. erupted with riots as visiting cultures clash and passions explode.
24. Security chief Garibaldi must use all his skills to quell the violence
25. between races. But the troubles escalate as terrifying nightmares
26. plague
27. everyone on board from Captain Sheridan to Vorlon Ambassador Kosh. It
28. seems as if some "force" is touching them all...

32. Then an alien presence appears. A long, twisting band of green light
33. nine million miles long stretches out against the darkness of
34. space on a collision course with Babylon 5. Since it remains invisible
35. to
36. computer sensors, some are calling it an illusion, others are calling it
37. an
38. evil life force. Still others are calling it God. Now it is up to
39. Captain Sheridan and Garibaldi to find out, risking there lives, and
40. perhaps their souls, to venture forth among the stars to meet the
41. unknown...

43.
Synopsis

44.

45. The novel opens with Garibaldi sitting on a transport near the Euphrates
46. sector jump gate. A friend who owes him from a World Series bet
47. is taking him back home on a rickety transport. Almost as soon as they
48. arrive, the friend offers to buy a drink. After Garibaldi refuses, his
49. link beeps, ending any thoughts of peace and quiet. Garibaldi reports to
50. Brown deck as request.
51.

52.

53. The Consortium of Live Eaters had gotten down to Brown deck and started
54. rioting. Meanwhile a fight was breaking out at the Trinocular Film
55. Festival and the Life in Transition group was starting a fight in the
56. Main
57. Hall. The LITs as they were called had created quite a stir, their
58. belief that life was just a "mistake," led to a large counter protest
59. outside the hall. Garibaldi convinces them to return to their conference
60. room and posts several guards to keep them there.
61.

62.

63. Garibaldi finally gets a chance to meet with Sheridan who apologizes for
64. bringing the Security Chief's leave to such an abrupt end. Ivanova
65. arrives
66. and Sheridan explains to them how the entire station has been erupting
67. in
68. violence. Also, a number of people have been having particularly
69. violent
70. nightmares. Dr. Franklin arrives late and explains that he hasn't been
71. able to find a source for the disturbances. Garibaldi reiterates the
72. request to lock the conferees up, but Sheridan explains that a number of
73. the ambassadors have complained. (See Notes.) After
74. ending the meeting, Garibaldi stays and asks the Captain if he has been
75. having the nightmares too. Sheridan admits to having them without saying
76. more.
77.

78.

79. Psi Corps member Martina Coles attempts to sleep and she feels
80. something and yet nothing reaching out to her. Kosh stands in
81. contemplation as something shakes "Kosh to the core of [its] alien
82. being." (See Notes.) Ambassador Delenn, dreaming,
83. finds a curved
84. scimitar in her hand. A voice cries out to her, warning her to defend
85. herself or die. The voice belongs to Sheridan, who kills her all the
86. while talking about the end of a time for talking. (See <A
87. HREF="#NO">Notes.)
88. G'Kar dreams about destroying the Centauri ships as a hero in war. But
89. the Centauri, specifically Londo use a new kind of weapon to disable the
90. Narn and prevent victory. Garibaldi finds himself in a shuttle with
91. Ivanova. The two argue about the controls with him finally attempting
92. the
93. landing. As they were about to make it, he realizes a battle is underway
94. and he wakes screaming 'No!' and covered in sweat. His link beeps,
95. trouble
96. in Security Central among other locations.
97.

98.

99. After breaking up a fight between two of his officers by throwing them in
100. the Brig, Garibaldi goes to handle the Fermi's Angels. The Angels are
101. motorcyclists in space. Meanwhile, Sheridan plans a meeting along with
102. Ambassadors
103. for the next day about the incidents on the station. The invitation also
104. includes Coles who Sheridan feels may have information. Then Ivanova
105. calls from the observation dome asking him to come see something.
106.

107.

108. The Worm is 9 million miles long and half a million miles wide but aside
109. from a green luminescence, it does not show up on anything but through
110. direct observation. Sheridan orders a science team to investigate and
111. they begin planning. He also contacts Earth Dome and the president's
112. aide
113. already knows about the vent. Sheridan is surprised that they are
114. willing
115. to admit that they have a mole on the inside.
116.

117.

118. Two things touched Martina Coles' mind. One was that strange thing
119. that had brushed across the other day. The other was an alien. A
120. Vorlon,
121. Kosh. After shaking off the shivers and cold sweat that the feeling had
122. brought on she goes to the ambassador's quarters. She asks him to stay
123. out of her mind and he responds "You are . . . not ready to hear me."
124. They "argue" a bit about whether there will be a time when she is ready
125. to
126. hear, but Martina flees the quarters in afraid that continuing will not
127. get
128. her anywhere and that she might loose her cool. She finally makes it
129. back
130. to her quarters in a state of terror.
131. Garibaldi manages to handle the Angels by convincing them that he is
132. 'hip'.
133. And they give him a jacket and offer to give him a ride.
134.

135.

136. At the briefing the next day, the table was crowded. Ivanova had already
137. positioned herself next to the door so that after Londo and G'Kar
138. entered
139. they would not leave and would stay at the table. The science team that
140. Ivanova was organizing had not yet left. And Sheridan tried to get any
141. information about the incidents. Kosh was of course absent from the
142. meeting. Martina Coles balks at reading aliens for Sheridan in an attempt
143. to figure anything out. She explains that her temporary contract has a
144. clause excusing her from such requests. Garibaldi makes a reference to
145. the
146. alleged bomb planted in Londo by saying 'Boo!' and that calms Londo down
147. again. After the meeting adjourns, Delenn talks to Sheridan and warns him
148. that the station may be in worse danger based on her dreams. She warns
149. that the races may all turn on each other and explains her dream in which
150. he tries to kill her.
151.

152.

153. In the Observation Dome, Ivanova is surprised that the Worm is moving
154. towards the station at a rapid click. The Worm would arrive within
155. forty-eight hours. Lennier meanwhile was beginning to be affected by the
156. Worm. When Coles accidentally brushed against him in the hall, he began to
157. simmer angrily. Returning to his quarters he smashed a mirror and began
158. to
159. recall his dreams of roaming the halls with a spear and a loincloth. His
160. goal, targeting the non-Minbari. The blood from his knuckles brought
161. unconsciousness and sleep.
162.

163.

164. Franklin was under a tremendous amount of stress from the influx of minor
165. injuries as well as the concern about the unknown plague that was
166. afflicting the station. Garibaldi meanwhile also had his hands full with
167. chaos throughout the station. He attempts to break into Coles' quarters,
168. but she arrives before he enters. They argue briefly and she passes out.
169. Garibaldi offers some aid and seems convinced that Coles is at the least
170. not working against them.
171.

172.

173. Sheridan and Garibaldi discuss Coles and Garibaldi thinks she knows
174. something but is too frightened to discuss it. Sheridan also explains
175. that
176. Earth Central is afraid of the Worm but unwilling to assist with sending
177. troops. Back in Command and Control, Ivanova monitors the large science
178. probe they sent to the Worm. Nothing. Not even video. They agree to
179. prepare another probe, this one with a weapon to give off a little shock.
180.

181.

182. Sheridan sleeps fitfully. He dreams of the Minbari Grey Council. They
183. ask what he fears. Delenn enters the circle from behind and asks if
184. Sheridan fears her. The council disappeared and in darkness he found
185. himself staring into a lit mirror, his face Minbari.
186.

187.

188. Again the Worm invades Martina Coles' mind and she screams in terror. And
189. then a dream, actually a memory comes. Psi Corps had let a Narn come to
190. her
191. when she was sixteen to breed. Psi Corps hoped that it would be more
192. powerful than anything they had ever produced. Martina ran away and
193. nothing was ever said of it again. When she awakens, Martina reaches out
194. to Kosh and asks to speak to him.
195.

196.

197. Sleep deprivation is hitting the command staff badly. Franklin has
198. created a vile looking sleep pill that will enable a few hours of sleep
199. without interruption by dreams. Delenn informs Sheridan that her world is
200. now on full alert since they are afraid the Worm is a prelude to war.
201. Sheridan gives Delenn one of the pills to assist her in sleep. As she
202. falls asleep in his office she says she could never kill him, and
203. Sheridan
204. responds with the same.
205.

206.

207. Three hours of truly restful sleep was a great aid to Garibaldi who
208. quickly
209. prepared to go underground in search of the transmitter that was giving
210. Earth Dome the inside track on station events. But, his investigation
211. does not turn up anything immediately except that black marketers from
212. Down Below
213. have already begun to leave the station out of fear.
214.

215.

216. The Reverend Bobby James Galazy of the Universal Church of Solar
217. Illumination has found the ideal opportunity to stir up further debate.
218. He calls the Worm a chance to drive the heathen from Babylon 5. He
219. claims
220. that only humans are made in God's image and the others must be destroyed.
221.

222.

223. Meanwhile, a Centauri ship is heading towards the Worm. With Londo's
224. help
225. they manage to get the ship to return to the station with only minimal
226. difficulty. The command staff agrees that everyone should be involved
227. and
228. share in the results when the station sends out its shuttle later.
229.

230.

231. Kosh tells Coles she is ready and to come to him. But Coles is already
232. having second thoughts, but finally relents and heads towards Kosh. Kosh
233. then opens a portion of his mind to her, revealing what he has determined
234. about the Worm.
235.

236.

237. Ivanova is called upon to meet with the Consortium of Live Eaters and
238. procure the return of a Centauri who had been abducted. They are a race
239. that live in an acidic atmosphere and were not visited by members of the
240. staff. After donning a special environmental suit she enters their
241. chambers. They explain that they are preparing for termination of their
242. community during the "Feast and Dissolution Ceremony" and the Centauri
243. entered "willingly." They agree to return the Centauri and proceed with
244. their ceremony without the Centauri. Ivanova watches them consume
245. themselves in just a few brief moments.
246.

247.

248. Hilton Dowd, Clark's aide, explains to Sheridan how displeased the
249. President is with Sheridan's responses thus far. Dowd mentions that
250. military action is being considered. When Sheridan explains that
251. anything
252. like that should wait till after the manned shuttled expedition, Dowd
253. explains he already knows of that and is expecting the results.
254.

255.

256. Ivanova and her scientific team including several techs and a Dr. Creighton
257. Laramie of Barker Industries on Earth approach the Worm.
258. As the shuttle draws closer,
259. sensors turned up nothing. As Dr. Laramie described it, there is just the
260. illusion of brightness. Ivanova contacts Sheridan before they agree that
261. the shuttle will go through the Worm. As Sheridan agrees, one of the
262. techs comes out like a loony with a spanner in hand. Another tech
263. explains that a third tech is already badly injured and they need to
264. return
265. to the station to save his life. Laramie puts up a small fight about the
266. need to return to the station, but relents.
267.

268.

269. When they get back to the station things have gotten out of control.
270. Ivanova is sent to try and handle the bikers while Garibaldi tries to
271. handle a situation between the Narn and Centauri in the Zocalo. After
272. locating G'Kar, Garibaldi heads to the Zocalo. Mollari is already dead
273. drunk and next to one of Garibaldi's guards in the Zocalo.
274.

275.

276. Ivanova has little success with the bikers till Garibaldi checks in via
277. link and he convinces them to cut her some slack. They take off to come
278. help Garibaldi in the Zocalo. Meanwhile, Garibaldi is pinned down with
279. G'Kar but he notices that Mollari had been kidnapped by the Narn. G'Kar
280. attempts to help them but given the general chaos little seems likely.
281.

282.

283. Once again Ambassador Delenn's dreams are intruded upon by the image of a
284. fight
285. with Sheridan. This time the setting is a joust in which Sheridan
286. finally
287. kills her as she pleads for him not to take her life.
288.

289.

290. Coles awakens to Garibaldi who has brought her back from Kosh's quarters.
291. He gives her one of the sleeping pills. When Coles awakens, Sheridan and
292. Garibaldi question her about what she learned from Kosh. She says she
293. learned nothing, just that it felt like a ghost of something.
294.

295.

296. Sheridan resolves to speak to Kosh and goes to visit him. Kosh explains
297. that Coles saw a fragment and that he is studying the worm, but can tell
298. Sheridan nothing. As Sheridan pushes Kosh, he senses that the Worm is
299. affecting Kosh also and Kosh finally withdraws asking Sheridan to leave
300. firmly.
301.

302.

303. In one of the docking bays, Ivanova is trying to keep people from leaving
304. the station. The crowd's mob mentality overwhelmed Ivanova and they
305. stormed towards the freighter. The freighter attempts to take off, but
306. the only thing that it succeeds in doing is rupturing itself, the hull and
307. taking a number of lives with it.
308.

309.

310. Reverend Bobby James Galaxy continues to dream up his Final Plan. Dreams
311. of destroying the aliens. Mass destruction, which he truly believed in.
312. Franklin found that even with the pills, dreams came, terrible dreams.
313. Him
314. in Medlab being the subject of study. Franklin contacts Sheridan and
315. explains that the pills can not be used repeatedly or that perhaps the
316. ever-increasing proximity of the Worm is reducing their effectiveness.
317.

318.

319. Garibaldi was having no luck locating Londo, but he did discover that
320. Laramie was the spy. Sheridan has Laramie put in the brig but before
321. long
322. Earth Central is on the comm with a pardon for Laramie.
323.

324.

325. Lennier begins acting out his dreams and puts on a loincloth and enters
326. the
327. halls of the station and begins attacking people. In Command and
328. Control,
329. Earthforce fighters have entered the sector through the jump gate and are
330. heading directly towards the Worm. Sheridan contacts Earth and demands
331. an
332. explanation and asks that the ships be called back. Sheridan heads off
333. with the station's Starfuries to intercept the Earthforce fighters and
334. deter them from attacking the Worm. Through bullying, Sheridan is able
335. to
336. get them to head back to the station with him.
337.

338.

339. Then a jump point opens and a Centauri battle cruiser emerges near the
340. Worm. To make matters worse, renegade Narn fighters led by G'Kar arrive
341. and begin a space battle. (See Notes.) The three
342. underground fighters continue the attack on the Centauri despite
343. Sheridan's request that the come back to the station. G'Kar is captured
344. by the Centauri creating a dual hostage standoff. But, the Centauri
345. battle cruiser is also crippled from the battle.
346.

347.

348. Sheridan has Garibaldi bug Laramie's lab before allowing Laramie to be
349. released. Garibaldi also discovers that as yet Laramie has discovered
350. nothing of value. The two hostage holding parties each make demands for
351. release of their respective hostages and then set simultaneous execution
352. times.
353.

354.

355. As the Worm drew closer, Coles lay in a fetal position trying to ignore
356. the memories inside her mind. Lennier sat making weapons like a madman.
357. Delenn locked herself in her quarters and fell into nightmares in which
358. she and Sheridan battled over and over. Sheridan saw himself transformed
359. into a Minbari. Everywhere, chaos. Reverend Galaxy awakens with a plan.
360.

361.

362. Ivanova explains that a mad man, Galaxy, together with the Fermi Angels,
363. was planning to blow up Babylon 5
364. as the Worm passes over. Garibaldi goes to Laramie and after some
365. arguing, Laramie admits him. Laramie agrees to help.
366.

367.

368. Lennier and Garibaldi end up in a tussle that results in Garibaldi being
369. stabbed. Delenn summons Sheridan to the garden where she attempts to
370. kill
371. him, first offering a weapon to the Captain. Sheridan is possessed with
372. anger and begins to slash at her and then the power went out.
373.

374.

375. The Worm passed through the station. The power surge met Laramie's
376. counter
377. surge and all power went out. After the worm passed, the Centauri agree
378. to release G'Kar for Mollari and vice versa. The station and the people
379. on it begin to return to their senses, somewhat embarrassed about what
380. they
381. had done.
382.

383.

384. As some things begin to return to normalcy, there are apologies for bad
385. judgments. And a final meeting about the Worm. Little was learned;
386. Laramie, Coles, and Kosh each offer nothing of substance. Garibaldi is
387. given free reign to deal with all of the resulting conflicts and claims
388. and basically locks all the various parties in a conference room until
389. they can settle the difficulties.
390.

391.

392. The book ends inside Kosh's mind. The alien had sensed a presence, "What
393. are you...?", Kosh had asked. And a reply came as the Worm receded,
394. "What
395. are you?"

410.
The very suggestion that there are phenomenon in the universe that
411. the
412. Vorlons can not even comprehend is a nice touch. All too often, powerful
413. races seem to be able to comprehend everything. This portrayal of the
414. Vorlons suggests that they are creatures just like the humans, only more
415. advanced.

416.
The willingness of Clark to show his hand in this book fits
417. remarkably

420. loyal followers.

421.
One does have to wonder if Clark is at all involved in any of the
422. groups that we have seen in early episodes such as the Home Guard.

423.

424. The dream where Sheridan sees himself as a Minbari is rather interesting
425. in light of the suggestion that some or many Humans carry Minbari souls.
426. This may suggest that Sheridan, like Sinclair, has one.
427.

428.

429. The suggestion that Kosh is a powerful telepath is unsurprising, but the
430. ambassador's ability to communicate at such a distance seems rather
431. remarkable given what we know about telepathy among the other races and
432. the need for some physical proximity. Although, Ironheart, <A

440. The book refers to G'Kar as an ambassador, given the alleged time setting
441. of the book this is inaccurate. However, if you just assume that

448. The book refers to Delenn as being a member of the Grey Council still.
449. This was not true during the time setting of the book, but it perhaps
450. should be interpreted to mean that someone of high birth or position in
451. Minbari society does not typically wield weapons. But that notion is
452. also
453. contradicted by Delenn's fighting scene with Marcus in

457. The arrival of Narn fighters seems implausible given the time setting and
458. the probable use of any remaining fighters to attack the Centauri back
459. home.

464.
Gerald, the reality is that as humans, we're all flawed.
465. Errors and inconsistencies in something as big as a novel, written by
466. someone who doesn't work on the show, isn't involved in it day to day,
467. are gong to slip through. That is inevitable. I try to keep track of
468. it all, read as much as I can, to keep it in line, but the *only* way
469. to keep it 100% canon is to invest all the time I currently spend doing
470. that on the series, which is a 24 hour a day job.
471.

472. A writer comes in, has a notion for a book, or gets one
473. assigned to him; the writer then goes away and around that notion
474. writes 100,000 words or so. I don't see it again until the finished
475. manuscript comes in, almost always at the last minute. The *only* way
476. to make sure that every word of that is canon is to work hand in glove
477. with the writer through every page. The reason the B5 series is as
478. consistent as it is, is because that's what I do, day in and day out.
479.

480. So the broad strokes are always going to be pretty much
481. consistent with the series; of the next batch, we'll probably do some
482. backstory in the B5 universe taken from my notes. But some of the
483. details will always be off a bit, because you're turning the work over
484. to the hands of others. There is simply no other way to do it short of
485. my adding Editor and Publisher to my list of hats.
486.
It's either their ignorance or they don't care...but you're
487. correct, in the B5 universe you can't have two races interbreeding just
488. like that. (In fact, I seem to recall pointing this out in my notes on
489. the manuscript; odd that it hasn't been attended to, from what you're
490. saying. I can only assume that it slipped between the cracks.)
491.
Initially Dell kept going for one-word titles, and I generally don't
492. like that, so I told them to have the writers come up with more
493. interesting titles.
