  22. <h3 align=center>Death Before Dishonor</h3>
  23. The Tuchanq, a newly discovered humanoid species, can be an
  24. important ally for the Earth Alliance commanded by President
  25. Clark. So Captain John Sheridan welcomes their ambassadors
  26. to Babylon 5, not knowing that among them is D'Arc - a mass
  27. murderer on the run hoping to escape into the unsuspecting
  28. worlds of the galaxy....
  29. <h3 align=center>Clark's Law</h3>
  30. But the unforgiving rules of space have a different fate in store
  31. for D'Arc. A terrifying accident wipes away D'Arc's identity and
  32. his evil... leaving behind a loving, innocent being with a child's
  33. mind - a being that must die because President Clark, a leader
  34. with his own secret agenda, orders his immediate execution.
  35. Now, as Babylon 5 physician Dr. Stephen Franklin begs Sheridan
  36. to defy Clark's law, the captain faces the greatest test of his
  37. command - and a far greater test of his manhood, which may
  38. end his career in shame or become a shining reminder of what
  39. being human truly means....
  40. <H2><A NAME="SY">Synopsis</A></H2>
  41. <H3>Prologue: Lies</H3>
  42. <P>
  43. "Earth: First Lie": Opening in November of 2242, we see the Captain of
  44. the
  45. Earth vessel which fired on the Minbari lie to the president and then
  46. Vice
  47. President Santiago about who
  48. fired first. Captain Ferdinand claims it is the Minbari who fired first.
  49. </P>
  50. <P>
  51. "Earth: Second Lie": The scene opens on now President Clark in October of
  52. 2258 (See <A HREF="#NO">Notes</A>.) Clark has been plotting to reinstate
  53. the death penalty to regain popularity among humans by maintaining
  54. control
  55. and re-initiating capital punishment. Clark's internal thoughts also
  56. turn to
  57. the problems with Earth's colonies without which Earth could not survive.
  58. The senate is tied on the vote about re-instating capital punishment.
  59. Clark lies when the speaker of the senate asks if it will be equally
  60. applied to both humans and aliens. Answering yes, the speaker of the
  61. senate agrees to pass the law.
  62. </P>
  63. <P>
  64. "Tuchanq: First Lie": The scene is inside a Narn battle cruiser as G'Kar
  65. drops Centauri plasma generators on Tuchanq. After a few days G'Kar
  66. lands
  67. the Narn cruiser offering the Tuchanq assistance in recovering from the
  68. devastation caused by the "Centauri."
  69. </P>
  70. <P>
  71. "Tuchanq: Second Lie": October 2259, we see D'Arc of the Tuchanq killing
  72. the last of the Narn on Tuchanq and then boarding a Narn cruiser to head
  73. for Babylon 5 in search of assistance. Tuchanq has suffered tremendous
  74. environmental damage from years of Narn enslavement.
  75. </P>
  76. <H3>Part One: Among Shadows (December 12, 2259, Day)</H3>
  77. <P>
  78. The story opens on Sheridan eating breakfast and trying to cope with the
  79. mounds of paperwork that he needs to deal with as well as his own
  80. discomfort in his role as commander of Babylon 5. His mind turns the
  81. phrase <CITE>"If you go to Z'ha'dum you will die"</CITE> over and over
  82. again
  83. as he contemplates life. (See In the Shadow of Z'ha'dum)
  84. </P>
  85. <P>
  86. Ivanova interrupts his inner turmoil in order to be briefed on the arrival
  87. of the Tuchanq delegation. She remarks on the unusual fact that they are
  88. quadrupeds and after some jokes about the paper horizon and stations
  89. vanishing, he leaves her in charge of the matter. The problem for the
  90. Tuchanq is that their world's ecosystem has been destroyed by the Narn
  91. occupation.
  92. </P>
  93. <P>
  94. <CITE>"The Corps is your friend. Trust the Corps"</CITE> Ivanova is still
  95. plagued with thoughts about her friendship with Talia and hears her
  96. whispered words, more than just the touch of bodies, the touch of minds.
  97. After shaking herself awake from her nap, she struggles to gain inner
  98. peace
  99. as the core shuttle heads towards arrivals. The inner struggle relates
  100. to
  101. her continued denial of her telepathic abilities and the need to hide it
  102. to avoid the Psi Cops.
  103. </P>
  104. <P>
  105. Arriving in the customs area, things were already turning ugly. The
  106. Tuchanq were engaged in a bizarre ritual involving leaving blood on the
  107. floor of the arrival area. G'Kar had helped program a translator for
  108. Ivanova, but she turned out not to need it because they spoke System
  109. English. The ritual then involved cutting their throats and bleeding
  110. because their customs require returning something to the land.
  111. </P>
  112. <P>
  113. Anti-alien sentiments begin to break out and Ivanova realizes the
  114. situation
  115. is quickly escalating out of control.
  116. Then a Narn spots a Narn skull attached to one of the Tuchanq and
  117. fighting
  118. begins in earnest. Ivanova is finally forced to stun the delegation with
  119. her PPG to prevent further violence. Unfortunately the Tuchanq do not
  120. sleep, at least not as humans understand the concept, and by making them
  121. stop singing their songs of being and journey through the stunner, they
  122. are
  123. now all dead (insane.)
  124. </P>
  125. <P>
  126. The scene shifts back to Sheridan's office where G'Kar is imploring
  127. Sheridan to get the Tuchanq off the station and to make amends for the
  128. sole death from the incident -- a Narn. Sheridan refuses his request and
  129. G'Kar leaves in disgust.
  130. </P>
  131. <P>
  132. D'Arc awakens surround by Medlab personnel and quickly realizes that her
  133. Song of Being is
  134. broken. She attacks one of the Medlab people with a knife which she
  135. withdraws from some sort of body pouch and flees with her Song of Journey
  136. running strong. In order to be whole again, she would need to steal a
  137. new
  138. Song of Being from someone else.
  139. </P>
  140. <P>
  141. Londo Mollari meanwhile begins trying to jockey for a chance to meet with
  142. the Tuchanq. His conscience is still wracked with images of the
  143. bombardment of the Narn homeworld and their destruction of their
  144. civilization.
  145. Mollari meets up with Garibaldi who explains that the Tuchanq are
  146. "killing" each other to cure the insanity. Once the remaining sane
  147. Tuchanq
  148. break the Song of Journey they will be pronounced dead and be reborn with
  149. new Songs of Being and Journey. nu'Viel (their leader/mother) explains
  150. to
  151. Ivanova the urgency of catching D'Arc to which Ivanova points out the
  152. size
  153. of the station and their limited resources.
  154. </P>
  155. <P>
  156. Brian Grond would become D'Arc's target. He would not realize this yet,
  157. but his taste for perverse (See <A HREF="#NO">Notes</A>)
  158. sexual activities with aliens along
  159. with his need to record them would be his downfall. Grond was hoping to
  160. have an especially interesting encounter with Belladona with whom he had
  161. already had several encounters. Down Below he went to where he expected
  162. to
  163. find Belladona but she was not there. Then his eyes met those of D'Arc.
  164. He makes an offer to give her cash if she will take him to Belladona.
  165. D'Arc expresses her desire to murder him with a confusing discussion of
  166. the
  167. need to take his Song of Being, Grond merely replies yes and he heads off
  168. towards his death.
  169. </P>
  170. <P>
  171. The PPG he is carrying does not save him when in the middle of a cargo
  172. hold
  173. D'Arc pulls the knife from her pouch and kills him taking his Song of
  174. Being. In the process, a cargo loader impacts a crane in the cargo area
  175. leading to the possibility of the crane impacting the station's structure
  176. and causing a rupture.
  177. </P>
  178. <P>
  179. Franklin and other Medlab personnel head out to rescue the trapped crane
  180. operator. He goes out suited up because the area has become
  181. depressurized. Further he will have to amputate the crane operator's leg
  182. inside the suit. The timing is close to the wire and the crane does in
  183. fact impact the station but Franklin and the crane operator survive,
  184. barely.
  185. </P>
  186. <P>
  187. Lyta Alexander appears briefly as we see her thoughts turning to the need
  188. to stay out of site and her desire to be able to visit the Vorlon
  189. homeworld. Garibaldi interrupts her reverie and asks for a telepathic
  190. favor
  191. involving Tuchanq. In a moment that recalls Lyta's first role in the
  192. pilot, she enters the Isolab to scan Tuchanq. Lyta explains that D'Arc is
  193. like a newborn child with <EM>no memory</EM> at any level of the events
  194. that resulted in Grond's death.
  195. As Lyta leaves Medlab she starts to hear the song, Kosh's song and
  196. realizes
  197. that nothing separates her from the Vorlons except some empty space --
  198. and
  199. she does know how to deal with that.
  200. </P>
  201. <P>
  202. This section of the book ends with a Gold Channel transmission from Earth
  203. ordering
  204. Sheridan to hold D'Arc for the death penalty.
  205. </P>
  206. <H3>Part Two: Hunting Shadows (December 12, 2259, Night)</H3>
  207. <P>
  208. This section opens on Jacintha Grond's arrival at Babylon 5 customs. (See
  209. <A
  210. HREF="#NO">Notes</A>). She is surprised to be greeted by the ubiquitous
  211. press, specifically Debora Devereau of Channel 57 News. (See <A
  212. HREF="#NO">Notes</A>). Grond is bombarded with a barrage of questions
  213. about how she feels on a variety of issues -- "What will you do if they
  214. won't release his body?". A security officer finally takes her hand and
  215. leads her away from the media frenzy.
  216. </P>
  217. <P>
  218. Mollari meanwhile is scheming to provide assistance to the Tuchanq. With
  219. the help of Vir he manages to arrange a meeting with nu'Viel and her
  220. chorus. Exploiting their hatred of the Narn, Mollari is able to extend a
  221. credible offer of assistance.
  222. </P>
  223. <P>
  224. Sheridan gets a chance to meet with Jacintha Grond who is rather confused
  225. and upset at this point. He explains to her that he can not release the
  226. body because it is needed for evidence and that she will have to
  227. basically
  228. deal with the situation. She explains that she intends to be on a return
  229. shuttle in 16 hours. Grond also takes her anger out on Sheridan
  230. explaining that she holds him personally responsible for the situation.
  231. Sheridan's inner frustration and turmoil is evident but he merely invites
  232. her to remain on the station and explains he will do the best he can.
  233. </P>
  234. <P>
  235. Franklin's overuse of stims is starting to have a noticeable effect. His
  236. first chance of sleep is interrupted by the arrival of the executioner.
  237. The
  238. executioner wants to use the life giver machine,
  239. <A HREF="/lurk/guide/021.html">Quality of Mercy</A> to perform the
  240. execution and demands it from Franklin. Franklin resists and the
  241. executioner summons Garibaldi who seems to have been waiting for this
  242. eventuality. Garibaldi recommends that Franklin comply by providing some
  243. bits and pieces to fool the executioner in the meanwhile.
  244. </P>
  245. <P>
  246. Sheridan approaches Delenn in search of assistance and guidance. He is
  247. disappointed to realize that Delenn has already been approached by Earth
  248. Gov and has reluctantly agreed not to interfere. The reason she explains
  249. has to do with her post-chrysalis state and the likelihood that the Grey
  250. Council would overrule her.
  251. </P>
  252. <P>
  253. On a core shuttle, G'Kar is attacked by Tuchanqs. G'Kar survives with
  254. only minor injuries and a closer examination reveals that someone has
  255. equipped humans with changeling nets to make them look like Tuchanqs.
  256. </P>
  257. <P>
  258. Garibaldi was already plenty busy, he had found the executioner bludgeoned
  259. to death in the Mosque where he had gone to pray while Franklin produced
  260. the life-giver machine. A decision is made to pay n'Grath a visit to
  261. find
  262. out where the changeling nets came from.
  263. </P>
  264. <P>
  265. Garibaldi has his teams scan red sector so that he can learn where n'Grath
  266. is to meet him. He stops in on Ivanova and they end up fighting about
  267. the
  268. upcoming execution. Ivanova fairly clearly against and Garibaldi somewhat
  269. indifferent to pro-execution. Their attempts to communicate are
  270. interrupted
  271. by Garibaldi's comm indicating that n'Grath has been located.
  272. </P>
  273. <P>
  274. G'Kar and Vir encounter each other again and Vir is clearly still trying
  275. to
  276. figure out how to help G'Kar and the Narns. There last meeting had been
  277. several months back and had not gone well. G'Kar asks Vir whether or not
  278. Mollari had him attacked and G'Kar
  279. nonetheless hounds him further and leaves Vir feeling very uncomfortable.
  280. Vir of course is aware that Mollari did in fact plot the attack. (See <A
  281. HREF="#NO">Notes</A>.)
  282. </P>
  283. <P>
  284. Vir goes and tells Londo about his meeting with G'Kar and accuses Londo
  285. directly. Mollari refuses to answer the question, and provides no useful
  286. information about whether or not he had G'Kar attacked.
  287. </P>
  288. <P>
  289. Garibaldi arrives in Red Sector too late to for n'Grath. The creature is
  290. bleeding and he calls for an emergency team to assist the alien. n'Grath
  291. refuses to divulge information providing only a name "Askari" and an
  292. admission that he did sell the nets. Garibaldi turns and catches the
  293. motion of a gun; instead he gets a blast in his face of a PPG. The
  294. faceplate of his suit ruptured.
  295. </P>
  296. <P>
  297. G'Kar decides that he will handle Askari, a Centauri himself.
  298. Approaching
  299. Askari he grabs him and demands to know who hired him. Askari admits it
  300. was Mollari. G'Kar then leaves him for dead from the dagger wound.
  301. </P>
  302. <P>
  303. Violence begins to erupt on the station as protesters for and primarily
  304. against the execution begin to start filling common areas. Grond is
  305. starting to have a crisis about what to do and resolves to go see D'Arc.
  306. </P>
  307. <P>
  308. G'Kar comes in and attacks Mollari with his dagger. He leaves Mollari
  309. for dead with the dagger in his back. Vir arrives and removes the dagger
  310. and conceals it before summoning Medlab. G'Kar leaves with the intention
  311. of committing suicide.
  312. </P>
  313. <P>
  314. In Medlab, Garibaldi comes around and then Kosh shows up and
  315. enigmatically
  316. mentions that "Obligation is a hangman's noose.". Meanwhile Ivanova
  317. brings nu'Viel to Sheridan to help lodge a protest against the death
  318. penalty being applied to D'Arc. As they are talking a gold channel
  319. transmission puts Sheridan in charge of everything -- trial and
  320. execution. After the transmission, nu'Viel decides that perhaps the
  321. Centauri a better choice to pursue aid from.
  322. </P>
  323. <H3>Part Three: Becoming Shadows (December 13, 2259, Day)</H3>
  324. <P>
  325. Jacintha Grond heads to security to visit D'Arc. She sees that D'Arc is
  326. clearly suffering from brain damage based on the erratic behavior D'Arc
  327. is
  328. demonstrating in the holding cell. Jacintha then decided to rent a room
  329. for the night and stay for a bit.
  330. </P>
  331. <P>
  332. Vir continues to hide the dagger from security as Londo suffers in
  333. Medlab. Franklin has to put Mollari in cryo-stasis since without
  334. assistance of donor organs it will be impossible to save him. The idea
  335. of using
  336. the life-giver device comes up and Vir promises to try and seek
  337. volunteers. He discovers that none will assist Londo, they are all
  338. afraid
  339. of him. And Centauri Prime already has a replacement ambassador on the
  340. way.
  341. Vir also attempts to enlist the help of the Minbari who will not assist
  342. because of religious beliefs concerning diminishment of the soul. (Cf.
  343. <A HREF="/lurk/guide/002.html">Soul Hunter</A>.) Vir also thinks of
  344. asking
  345. Kosh after he bumps into him, but decides against it after getting a
  346. sense
  347. of someone walking over his grave when talking.
  348. </P>
  349. <P>
  350. Sheridan will not agree to Franklin's request to order people to donate
  351. life energy but agrees to assist in broadcasting a request for assistance
  352. on the station network.
  353. </P>
  354. <P>
  355. G'Kar was still alive because without his dagger he could not perform
  356. suicide. Sheridan visits G'Kar and G'Kar shows him a different dagger
  357. thus "tricking" Sheridan into thinking he didn't do it. Vir returns the
  358. dagger to G'Kar later saying, "I said I was sorry."
  359. </P>
  360. <P>
  361. Garibaldi starts getting the sense of the violence that is going to break
  362. out on the station on his way through the station that day. Protesters
  363. are all around with signs pleading to save the alien. Garibaldi true to
  364. form uses his fists to break up a fight and is caught in the act on
  365. camera
  366. by Devereau from Channel 57. Morden happens to be on hand and gets
  367. interviewed as the guy on the street. He says, "I suppose that all life
  368. is important in some way." Then as if nodding to himself, he continues,
  369. "Yes. That's what I believe. Life is important. If you know what to do
  370. with it."
  371. </P>
  372. <P>
  373. Morden then continues to talk with Garibaldi and asks him about assisting
  374. in saving Mollari. Garibaldi rebuffs the suggestion pointing out he
  375. would
  376. die. Morden remains silent. Morden then shrugs and says "Then I'll
  377. consider the debt yet to be repaid." Smiling, he says, "Join me on the
  378. monorail?" Garibaldi is interrupted by Sheridan on the comm link and takes
  379. his leave of Morden.
  380. </P>
  381. <P>
  382. The court chamber. Grond is looking on as the trial commences. Sheridan
  383. takes his place as judge; there will be no jury. nu'Viel is used as a
  384. witness for the prosecution to explain that D'Arc had murdered before.
  385. Sheridan responded to prosecution demands that nu'Viel restrict her
  386. answers
  387. to the questions, cutting her off regularly. (See <A
  388. HREF="#NO">Notes</A>.) On cross-examination, the defense tries to bring
  389. out the issues about D'Arc's psychosis, which seems to fall on deaf ears.
  390. The defense calls Dr. Franklin to the stand for direct who explains about
  391. the brain damage and her child like state. (See <A HREF="no">Notes</A>.)
  392. Sheridan recesses and on return finds D'Arc guilty on murder. As if on
  393. cue,
  394. chaos breaks out in the courtroom. Grond even agrees saying on TV that
  395. she feels justice is not served.
  396. </P>
  397. <P>
  398. In Medlab, Sheridan tries to get Franklin to agree to sedate D'Arc. He
  399. balks and Sheridan begins to administer the hypo and Franklin agrees to
  400. do
  401. it only to prevent Sheridan from killing her by giving the hypo.
  402. </P>
  403. <P>
  404. Garibaldi notices Morden leaving Medlab and that he has used the
  405. life-giver without the assistance of any others to save Londo. Garibaldi
  406. also realizes that the Shadows had a hand since otherwise Morden would be
  407. dead.
  408. </P>
  409. <P>
  410. G'Kar can't bring himself to go through with the suicide because of his
  411. fear of what the future holds. He leaves his quarters to go out and
  412. shape
  413. the future.
  414. </P>
  415. <P>
  416. Jacintha Grond goes to find her husband and sees he is missing. The
  417. station is descending into further chaos as the preparations for the
  418. execution procession commence. The execution will be in an airlock.
  419. Devereau grills Sheridan why such barbarism is being used to execute
  420. D'Arc
  421. and why there are crowds, etc. Then G'Kar
  422. arrived to beg forgiveness from nu'Viel. She grants him forgiveness.
  423. Then,
  424. all hell breaks loose.
  425. </P>
  426. <P>
  427. Even Devereau had never seen violence like this. She managed to don a
  428. gas
  429. mask to aid herself. After enough of the violent protesters were downed
  430. with gas, the procession proceeded towards an airlock. Franklin makes one
  431. last attempt to block the airlock with his body. Delenn offers a very
  432. insightful comment stating:
  433. <BLOCKQUOTE><CITE>
  434. This event has left in my mind an
  435. extraordinary feeling of terror and shame. It seems to me I have been
  436. witness to -- and indeed, party to -- an act of ... of shameful violence
  437. perpetrated by intelligent beings [glance to Sheridan] against one of
  438. their
  439. fellows. No matter what anyone might say, violence will never prevent
  440. violence.
  441. </CITE></BLOCKQUOTE>
  442. </P>
  443. <P>
  444. After the death, a gold channel message comes in while they are all near
  445. the airlock. Sheridan allows it to be played there. No clemency from
  446. the
  447. Senate, either way it was too late.
  448. </P>
  449. <P>
  450. 257 Wounded. 53 Deaths, including a miscarried pregnancy.
  451. </P>
  452. <P>

  461. Franklin and Garibaldi arrive together. Franklin is stating he wants to
  462. lodge a complaint. Sheridan deters him by explaining that Garibaldi and

  464. already dead -- wearing a changeling net -- was executed.

  467. The book ends with some words from Kosh. Kosh looks at him quietly.
  468. Like
  469. a mirror. Fear is a mirror. Sheridan speaks, "I understand now.
  470. Because
  471. I was scared I became devious. I took advantage of people and events to
  472. accomplish my own ends... ...my fear has enabled me to understand myself
  473. more clearly." Finally, Kosh said, "You are the light, yet the hope of
  474. all
  475. darkness." Pause. "You are touched by Shadows." Then Kosh leaves. The
  476. book ends with Sheridan realizing in a moment of truth
  477. that his life would end as it had begun with awe and wonder, pain and
  478. terror. And Shadows, always with Shadows.

  480. <H3>Epilogue: Truth</H3>
  481. <P>"Earth: The First Truth": We see Clark contemplating the future in the
  482. Senate Chamber in late December 2259. He realizes that the actions he
  483. takes today will cause him not only to be remembered by the future but to
  484. define it. A quote next to the page explains how EarthGov has subpoenaed
  485. the footage from the execution to avoid scandal. Devereau (the anchor)
  486. also
  487. mentions that the death penalty has now been repealed to avoid scandal.
  488. </P>
  489. <P>"Tuchanq: The Second Truth": nu'Viel stands surveying the planet now
  490. that Tuchanq is being "aided" by the Centauri. She realizes that in
  491. reality the Tuchanq song now belongs to the Shadows.
  492. </P>
  493. <P>"The Rim: The Final Truth": Captain Varese finds his ship under
  494. assault by screaming ships. As he dies, he has a peculiar sense of deja
  495. vu
  496. about his final words, "They fired first."

  508. What's the deal with singing and songs? The issue has been brought

  527. What is Kosh up to with Sheridan? As the ending dialog suggests,

  540. This particular novel fits with the overall storyline much tighter than

  555. <LI> The second lie portion of the prologue should probably be dated
  556. October of 2259 not 2258. This is an editing error in all likelihood.
  557. The reason it is an error is that Clark did not become president until
  558. the
  559. very end of Season 1, which took all of 2258 and further a death penalty
  560. law would not go a full year without a test. Also the Tuchanq second lie
  561. is, we presume, supposed to occur shortly after the re-enactment of the
  562. death penalty.

  564. <LI> This book has extremely detailed albeit sometimes apparently
  565. inaccurate descriptions of the station -- Ivanova's quarters -- but it
  566. does give a nice sense of the station.
  567. </LI>
  568. <LI> Another editing error seems to involve the captain's name in the
  569. prologue and the epilogue both should presumably be the same since
  570. presumably the deja vu has do with previously having said "They fired
  571. first."
  572. </LI>
  573. <LI> It is surprising that G'Kar and perhaps Narns in general have such
  574. difficulty grasping human subtlety. Contrast this with the generally
  575. broader understanding demonstrated by the Minbari and Vorlons at reading
  576. between the lines, etc. This may have more to do with experience and
  577. knowledge due to general species age than anything else. Alternatively
  578. it

  620. In the United States today, the death penalty has and continues to be
  621. carried out on the mentally retarded, even upon people with IQ's as low
  622. as
  623. 60. (McCollum v. No. Carolina, US SC 1994: Blackmun's dissent from the
  624. denial of review mentions that the person to be executed has a 9 yr old
  625. mental age and can barely read at a second grade level. He was "under
  626. stress and easily influenced by others." Continuing, Blackmun explains
  627. how
  628. the lower court found:
  629. <BLOCKQUOTE>
  630. that he committed the felony murder under the influence of
  631. mental or emotional disturbance, that he had cooperated with the police,
  632. that he had no significant history of prior criminal activity, and that
  633. he
  634. had adapted well to prison. In addition, the trial judge concluded that
  635. "[a]ll of the evidence tends to show that [McCollum's] capacity ... to
  636. appreciate the criminality of his conduct or to conform to the
  637. requirements
  638. of law was impaired." McCollum was 19 at the time of the crime.
  639. </BLOCKQUOTE>
  640. Blackmun's dissent concludes on a note that is similar to the rationale
  641. that the senate used in turning down the death penalty:
  642. "Our system of capital punishment simply does not
  643. accurately and consistently determine which defendants most "deserve" to
  644. die."
  645. The sole standard that the Supreme Court has established is that at
  646. the time of death the person must be able to comprehend what is going to
  647. happen to them thus leading to ironies like lawyers trying to have their
  648. clients taken off anti-psychotic drugs to prevent executions.
