  33. <h2><a name="SY">Synopsis</a></h2>
  34. <p>The scene opens on a busy day at C&amp;C as Commander Susan Ivanova
  35. is monitoring the station's traffic lanes. The screens highlight a
  36. single crippled cargo vessel with failed stabilizers. She orders the
  37. Centauri transport to cut its engines and not to attempt to land under
  38. its own power. Ivanova orders some shuttles to tow the vessel into
  39. the docking bay and consequently must divert traffic to nearby lanes
  40. to leave plenty of room for the shuttles to grapple the freighter. As
  41. the shuttles grapple on, Communications reports that an "urgent and
  42. personal" message has arrived for her. Because it is tagged personal
  43. she chooses not to view it immediately.
  44. <p>Aside from a tense moment when Narn fighter leaves its assigned
  45. lane to cut off the Centauri ship's path, the procedure is both
  46. uneventful and tedious. Once the situation is fully resolved, Ivanova
  47. returns control to the technicians and queries the computer about the
  48. message. The sender is reported simply as "J.D." She figures out
  49. that it is from J.D. Ortega, her former flight instructor who had
  50. chosen to leave Earthforce and go back to Mars to work in the mines.
  51. Finally she views the message:
  52. <blockquote>
  53. <p><i>"Susan, I am in trouble. They say you're Number Two here on
  54. this station. I don't know anyone else who might be able to help.
  55. There's something I have to tell you. Please, meet me in the Alpha
  56. Wing ready room at 20:00 hours."</i>
  57. </blockquote>
  58. <p>After nearly two hours of waiting, she finally asks the computer
  59. about J.D.'s arrival on the station. The computer responds that
  60. although there have been eight Ortegas arriving on the station since
  61. it first came on line, none of them have had the initials J.D. After
  62. doing some more queries about the origin of the message she asks for a
  63. search of all files containing the name "J.D. Ortega", to which the
  64. computer responds that it has found a restricted file.
  65. <p>The computer responds to her executive officer password and the
  66. screen is replaced by an image of his face, along with a fugitive
  67. alert listing him as a suspected terrorist. Ivanova contacts
  68. Garibaldi and, upon mention of the name, he asks her to meet him in
  69. Security Central. After explaining that she and J.D. hadn't seen each
  70. other or corresponded save holiday greetings since her first posting
  71. on Io, she insists that she still can't imagine him having been
  72. involved in any sort of terrorism or conspiracy.
  73. <p>A distress signal is received on Babylon 5 and Sheridan orders
  74. Ivanova to scramble Alpha Wing to protect the transport.
  75. Unfortunately, the transport is unarmed and the ETA to the transport's
  76. last position is nearly 3 hours. The fighter wing arrives, and
  77. long-range scans detect several raiders along with a larger ship.
  78. Ivanova splits her squadron in an attempt to cut the raiders off at
  79. the jump gate while also sending some fighters in towards the raiders
  80. and the transport ship. Combat ensues, and in the end two raiders
  81. collide, taking the jump gate off-line until repairs can be made. The
  82. transport's crew is dead and its hull is ripped open.
  83. <p>Back on the station, J.D. Ortega's body is found in the flight
  84. lockers belonging to Alpha Squadron. Dr. Franklin is called in to do
  85. the autopsy. He uses a compound to relieve rigor mortis, and with
  86. some new techniques, he is able to determine that Ortega was murdered
  87. around 20:00 hours and that the cause of death was a particularly
  88. unusual and hard to detect poison, chloro-quasi-dianimidine. The
  89. poison had been directly injected into the blood stream.
  90. <p>Garibaldi had previously asked Talia Winters to scan the workers
  91. who had found the body. The workers agreed and she performed the
  92. scans, to discover that they had told the truth and knew nothing about
  93. the origin of the body. Garibaldi insists on having Ivanova give a
  94. positive identification of the body, which she provides. He also
  95. shows her a message that was found on the floor of the briefing room,
  96. presumably from Ortega to Ivanova. It reads:
  97. <blockquote>
  98. <p><i>S I -- hardwired</i>
  99. </blockquote>
  100. <p>They agree that "SI" probably stands for Susan Ivanova, but for the
  101. life of her Ivanova can not make sense of the word "hardwired".
  102. Sheridan offers to take Ivanova to breakfast, and she accepts. It
  103. turns out that the attacked transport was carrying a strategic metal
  104. called "Morbidium" which is vital for the production of phased plasma
  105. weapons. It is a material that has its price and trade strictly
  106. controlled by Earth Alliance, and consequently has a high black market
  107. value.
  108. <p>Ivanova notices that since they were cut off severely last year,
  109. raids seem to be on the rise. She decides to hunt for a pattern to
  110. the raids and receives Sheridan's approval. Because of the broken
  111. jumpgate, C &amp; C is hectic and Ivanova does not find time to
  112. investigate while on duty.
  113. <p>Later that evening Ivanova begins sifting through the data. After
  114. several blind paths she finally tracks down a correlation: the
  115. increase in raids has occurred on transports out of Marsport, and
  116. further, all of them were carrying strategic metals. Worst of all,
  117. they were successful raids. The next morning Ivanova explains her
  118. findings to Garibaldi and he warns her to be careful of stepping on
  119. toes.
  120. <p>Their breakfast is interrupted by a call from Sheridan to Garibaldi
  121. asking him to come to his office. Sheridan orders Garibaldi to
  122. terminate his investigation into Ortega's death and prepare to turn
  123. over all files related to the matter to a special investigator from
  124. Earth Central.
  125. <p>Garibaldi watches the arrival of the transport and the disembarking
  126. of the special investigators. The investigators promptly arrive in
  127. Security and demand that he turn over his files, records and
  128. passwords. The investigators are led by Commander Wallace and his two
  129. assistants, Lieutenants Miyoshi and Khatib.
  130. <p>Garibaldi leaves them to their work, which includes taking some of
  131. his guards under their control and establishing their own lock-up
  132. facility and interrogation rooms. He goes Downbelow where he searches
  133. for leads from sources such as Mort the Ear and an old friend, Nick
  134. Patinos, who is from Mars. Neither is able to offer him any useful
  135. information.
  136. <p>Commander Ivanova is interviewed by Lieutenant Miyoshi who causes
  137. her to lose her temper after he insinuates that she destroyed the
  138. cards and letters of holiday greetings from Ortega to conceal her
  139. involvement with a terrorist. Miyoshi then makes a point of the fact
  140. that Ivanova waited so long after the arranged meeting time to contact
  141. anyone, and that she was unaware of the security notice about Ortega.
  142. He also points out that nobody but Ivanova saw the person leaving the
  143. area as she entered the ready room. Miyoshi also makes a point of
  144. wanting her to figure out the meaning of the note, and finally
  145. dismisses her.
  146. <p>Garibaldi discovers that Wallace has locked out files on some
  147. people, including Patinos, and goes to Sheridan to complain. Sheridan
  148. orders Wallace to release all files not directly related to the Ortega
  149. case and orders Garibaldi to steer clear of the Ortega case. Wallace
  150. then insists that Ivanova be put on restricted duties or arrested.
  151. Sheridan eventually relents, placing her on restricted duties.
  152. <p>Prior to this point, Ivanova had had an unblemished career record.
  153. Sheridan was aware that this flag in her file might ruin her chances
  154. of ever having a command of her own, but he also felt that it was
  155. better than having Wallace go over his head and perhaps having Ivanova
  156. arrested or even shipped back to Earth.
  157. <p>Garibaldi then goes back Downbelow only to discover that Mort has
  158. disappeared from the station. A comm link message informs him that
  159. part of a second body, a foot, was discovered in the in the recycling
  160. facilities. They are able to identify the DNA pattern as belonging to
  161. Fengshi Yang, who had allegedly already departed -- less one foot?
  162. Garibaldi carefully informs his next in command, Lieutenant Torres,
  163. that she is to investigate this matter and that there is no connection
  164. to the Ortega case, if she knows what he means.
  165. <p>Garibaldi returns to pump Nick for information, but his friend is
  166. even more tightly clammed up. Garibaldi does learn that people are
  167. being deported off the station -- presumably by Wallace and his
  168. assistants. Further, he finds out that a telepath is being used to
  169. scan the people being questioned.
  170. <p>Garibaldi makes a point of sitting down with Winters and prying
  171. information out of her about whether Wallace is using her services.
  172. She eventually acknowledges that he is, and Garibaldi points out that
  173. the people she is scanning probably haven't really consented. Later,
  174. Winters visits Sheridan and explains that the people aren't actually
  175. consenting. He informs her that he will talk to Wallace, but
  176. ultimately it is a matter between her and Psi Corps. Sheridan
  177. contacts Wallace and a heated discussion takes place in which Wallace
  178. refuses to budge, and Sheridan informs him that he will contact Earth
  179. Central about Wallace's conduct.
  180. <p>When Winters arrives at the interrogation room, Miyoshi is waiting
  181. and complains about her lateness. Miyoshi then informs her that she
  182. will confine herself exclusively to their needs. Miyoshi then pulls
  183. out a viewer card and hands it to Winters. In her hand, a glowing Psi
  184. takes holographic form (<em>cf.</em> <a
  185. href="/lurk/guide/006.html">"Mind War"</a>), and she feels a message
  186. force itself into her mind:
  187. <blockquote>
  188. <p><i>Obey. No questions. Obey.</i>
  189. </blockquote>
  190. <p>Meanwhile, Ivanova reports for duty, and Sheridan puts her in
  191. charge of escorting transports in an attempt to reduce raider attacks,
  192. and to give her something useful to do.
  193. <p>Garibaldi has kept all of the information about Yang's death out of
  194. the computer to avoid prying by Wallace, and promises Ivanova he will
  195. continue looking into things. Sheridan calls Garibaldi to view a high
  196. priority message direct from Admiral Wilson of the Office of the Joint
  197. Chiefs, informing Sheridan that he is to give Wallace every degree of
  198. cooperation with regard to the investigation.
  199. <p>Garibaldi finds himself called to the Casino to break up a fight
  200. between patrons that is breaking down along human-alien lines,
  201. concerning cheating. An alien has accused a human of cheating, and
  202. the human has accused the alien of being a telepath. Telepaths are,
  203. of course, banned from gambling (<em>cf.</em> <a
  204. href="/lurk/novels/001.html">"Voices"</a>). Garibaldi ascertains that
  205. the human was cheating, and with Winters' help discerns that the alien
  206. is a telepath as well. With the fight broken up he turns his
  207. attention to the human who confesses without too much effort. The
  208. gambler also recognizes Yang's picture and explains that he was an
  209. enforcer for AreTech Mining. Garibaldi convinces the man to leave the
  210. station quietly.
  211. <p>Another day, and Ivanova finds herself back on escort duty once
  212. again. This time the ship <i>Kobold</i> is helped by them. They
  213. escort the ship all the way from the jump gate back to the station.
  214. Ivanova notices that the pilot seemed to be expecting a raid and the
  215. pilot agrees to discuss the matter further once back at the station.
  216. Raiders do attempt to get her to pull her squadron off escort, but she
  217. doesn't fall for it and the <i>Kobold</i> has a smooth escort all the
  218. way to Babylon 5.
  219. <p>Garibaldi goes back Downbelow to meet with someone, a meeting
  220. arranged by Patinos. The man does not recognize the picture of Yang,
  221. and Garibaldi wanders off realizing he has hit a dead end. He doesn't
  222. notice the man come up from behind, who then whacks him with shock
  223. sticks. When he awakes he is trapped in a locker, and he fights
  224. frantically to attract attention.
  225. <p>Lieutenant Torres decides to contact Sheridan when she realizes
  226. that Garibaldi is missing, and she explains the investigation that is
  227. going on. After Garibaldi is found and brought to Medlab, Wallace
  228. enters, rather aggressively, against the wishes of Franklin and a
  229. tech. Garibaldi mentions Yang's name to Wallace and realizes that,
  230. when he claims not to recognize the name, he is probably lying, but
  231. having said he didn't know the person, Wallace is forced by Sheridan
  232. to leave. Sheridan insists that this time things are going to be done
  233. his way, and that he will bring in Garibaldi's contact.
  234. <p>The <i>Kobold</i>'s pilot, Mr. Pal, insists upon buying dinner for
  235. Ivanova as a thank-you gesture. He explains that they were expecting
  236. an attack, and that he thought that her ships might have been raiders
  237. until they identified themselves. Pal is on the union's central
  238. committee and he explains that when he left Marsport, their demands
  239. for better protection were still being studied. Ivanova explains,
  240. mindful of the trouble she is already in, some of her findings from
  241. her earlier computer analysis. Pal explains that they have started to
  242. think that Earth Central has a reason to be looking the other way.
  243. Pal also explains that they have started to wonder what they are
  244. really carrying morbidium, or perhaps just "slag", worthless mass.
  245. <p>The union thinks the plan would be to ship the rigidly
  246. price-controlled item and have it raided, then resell the product on
  247. the black market while also taking the insurance money. Or perhaps
  248. for each cargo there might be two ships: one for which they collect
  249. the insured value, and the other, which goes to the black market. In
  250. other words, pay raiders to attack ships carrying slag. Pal offers to
  251. have the insurance agent tell Ivanova the results of opening the
  252. crates at the final destination.
  253. <p>Later, Ivanova turns in response to her name being shouted across
  254. the Zocalo by a young businesswoman approaching. Luz Espada of the
  255. Universal Underwriters Corporation introduces herself and offers to
  256. buy Ivanova coffee. The two sit down to talk. Ivanova once again
  257. explains the results of her computer analysis of the raids, and Espada
  258. explains that her company has begun to reach a similar conclusion.
  259. She explains that ships and cargoes are generally separately insured,
  260. by different companies, and so it could take some time before losses
  261. would be noticed. Espada is able to provide some of the information
  262. about insurance companies that the computer couldn't provide Ivanova
  263. earlier. It turns out that shipments from AreTech Consolidated Mining
  264. Corporation of Mars -- headquartered on Earth -- have been the targets
  265. of a high proportion of raider attacks.
  266. <p>Their discussion is interrupted when Ivanova receives a request
  267. from Security to arrive at Docking Bay 18, where the <i>Kobold</i> is
  268. docked, to help with an incident. Torres explains the situation to
  269. Ivanova: Khatib has orders from Wallace to search the <i>Kobold</i>'s
  270. cargo and the crew is refusing, claiming that someone arrested their
  271. pilot. Torres explains that Security does not have the pilot and that
  272. Khatib has ordered the security squads under his control to use force,
  273. but they won't without confirmation from Babylon command. The captain
  274. is unavailable, making Torres the highest-ranking officer.
  275. <p>Ivanova talks with the members of the crew and convinces them to
  276. just leave unless Pal is returned, and only to agree to a search if it
  277. can be observed. They resist initially, but after convincing them
  278. that she will do everything to get him free and that the station will
  279. not stop the launch, they agree to the bluff. Ivanova explains the
  280. deal to Khatib, who rebuffs it but eventually realizes he will need to
  281. relent when C &amp; C refuses to take his order to stop the launch of
  282. the ship.
  283. <p>Pal is returned, drugged, and the cargo is searched. The cargo is
  284. in fact real morbidium ingots. Ivanova also realizes that the reason
  285. for interrogating Pal is that they wanted to see if she had passed
  286. information to him, information from Ortega.
  287. <p>Garibaldi finds out that Patinos is being held, on Sheridan's
  288. orders, and goes to him. Patinos explains that he had Garibaldi
  289. attacked. Garibaldi gets the name of the attacker and tries to track
  290. the man down, but his quarters are empty. Meanwhile he tries to track
  291. down information about Yang on Mars, and discovers that the records
  292. are now classified -- as of just hours after he told Wallace that he
  293. was investigating Yang's death. Garibaldi is certain that he has
  294. Wallace caught in a lie now. Garibaldi finds out from Patinos that
  295. the name of the attacker was really Josef Nagy, and he sets out to
  296. find the man before Wallace can.
  297. <p>Ivanova is again on escort duty and this time they receive a
  298. distress call from the transport <i>Duster</i>. They intercept the
  299. raiders before they have a chance to destroy the transport and even
  300. manage to capture one of the raiders alive. In the process, one of
  301. Ivanova's squad members is killed. Ivanova allows another pilot to
  302. fly her Starfury; the <i>Duster</i> takes the damaged Starfury on
  303. board along with Ivanova, so she is able to question the raider.
  304. <p>Meanwhile, back on the station, Garibaldi stops the launch of a
  305. ship and manages to search, finding Nagy aboard. Garibaldi questions
  306. Nagy about Free Mars, Yang, and Ortega. The questioning is
  307. interrupted by the discovery of Khatib's body.
  308. <p>Upon questioning her prisoner, Ivanova discovers that AreTech has
  309. been selling out information about its shipments to the raiders
  310. directly from their office on Mars.
  311. <p>Wallace attempts to interfere in the investigation of the murder of
  312. Khatib but Garibaldi gets microfilms off the body and away from
  313. Wallace. Franklin locks the films inside the biohazard area. This
  314. results in the rather funny situation of Wallace being knocked out by
  315. the biohazard security system when he later tries to go back and get
  316. access to the films.
  317. <p>Meanwhile, a near riot has erupted on the station as people were
  318. complaining of lock-ups of hundreds of people by Wallace and Miyoshi.
  319. Sheridan orders the guards back under his command and has the
  320. prisoners released.
  321. <p>Wallace and Miyoshi are arrested for complicity in Yang's murder,
  322. and Ivanova returns, with the connection to AreTech Mining becoming
  323. clearer and clearer. (Ortega had worked for AreTech.)
  324. <p>Sheridan has contact with the Joint Chiefs again. Admiral Wilson
  325. reveals that the problem involving AreTech was quite real and that
  326. Wallace was a special investigator for them. He also explains that
  327. there will be no reprimand for Sheridan or his staff, but stops short
  328. of reinstating Ivanova, saying her case will be reviewed, eventually.
  329. <p>As if realizing the depths of her plight, Ivanova finally decides
  330. to turn to Talia Winters for assistance. The two return to Winters's
  331. quarters, and a deep scan is performed on Ivanova. The scan reveals
  332. that Ortega had a view that a pilot and their Starfury should be
  333. "hardwired together", so to speak, and Ivanova realizes that this
  334. means that the information is on her Starfury.
  335. <p>Ivanova boards her Starfury and queries for a file by keyword
  336. "J.D." A file is produced and she downloads it onto a data crystal.
  337. As she leaves the ship, she is knocked to the floor. Miyoshi has
  338. attacked her and has taken the data crystal from her. The two become
  339. engaged in combat, with Miyoshi clearly trying to kill Ivanova.
  340. <p>Winters gets onto the communicator with Garibaldi and warns him
  341. that she thinks Ivanova is in danger; Garibaldi reacts. The security
  342. officer that comes upon Miyoshi attacking Ivanova is forced to kill
  343. Miyoshi. The data crystal is removed from Miyoshi's pocket and the
  344. scene shifts to Sick Bay where Ivanova is recovering, and Sheridan,
  345. Garibaldi and Franklin are examining the data crystal. Ivanova comes
  346. to, and insists on seeing the contents of the crystal, too..
  347. <p>Computer analysis reveals that it is a description of a new atom,
  348. number 156, supermorbidium. Its chemical properties are such that it
  349. will be a potent portion of a weapon system. Sheridan and Ivanova
  350. contact the Joint Chiefs in private with information about recovery of
  351. the plans.
  352. <p>The novel ends with Ivanova back at her station and things
  353. returning back to normal.

  392. Earth Central, perhaps in President Clark's office.
  393. Alternately, we can see this as showing that the corruption goes
  394. to the highest ranks of Earthforce, and that Sheridan and

  397. certainly will have their hands full in trying to put a stop to
  398. the conspiracy.
  399. <li>Now that Ivanova has been scanned -- deep scanned, in fact -- it
  400. would seem to put rest to the notion that she might be a
  401. telepath trying to avoid detection from Psi Corps. On the other
  402. hand, if we take into account some of what we have learned about
  403. Winters in
  404. <a href="/lurk/novels/001.html">"Voices"</a> and
  405. <a href="/lurk/guide/030.html">"A Race Through Dark Places"</a>,
  406. it is possible that she and Ivanova have developed a close bond
  407. of shared secrets; consequently, even if Winters discovered that
  408. Ivanova was a telepath, it might not get reported to Psi Corps.
  409. <li>Things between Earth and Mars seem to be getting steadily worse.
