31.
Lost Scenes from Babylon 5

32.
As written by J. Michael Straczynski

33.

34. Here's another scene, which was filmed for the pilot movie, but
35. cut when the pilot ran long. It takes place at the top of the
36. movie, in the teaser.
37.

38. INT. OBSERVATION DOME
39. One of the consoles BREEPS and Laurel goes to it. With a push
40. of a button, the slender glass panel in front of her fills with
41. the image of SECURITY CHIEF MICHAEL GARIBALDI, early forties,
42. dark haired, hard-edged.
43. LAUREL
44. Garibaldi, what's up?
45. GARIBALDI
46. Looking for the Commander. We've got
47. someone down in Bay 12 needs his
48. personal clearance to come aboard.
49. LAUREL
50. He just linked in a few minutes ago,
51. said he was on his way. Had to take
52. care of a "tourist problem" first.
53. And no, I don't know what he meant,
54. so don't ask. I just hope it works
55. out better than the last one.
56. And with that, we go to
57. INT. CASINO
58. where we PAN the surroundings, revealing a mix of alien and
59. human life forms. There's smoke, music, dancers, and a colorful
60. blend of costumes and strange drinks on the bar. We FIND COMMANDER
61. JEFFREY SINCLAIR moving slowly through the crowd, keeping a close
62. eye on
63. A COUPLE
64. male and female from the look of it. He's human, she's alien,
65. and there's something vaguely chitinous about her skin, something
66. both exotic and forbidding. He's clearly coming on to her. He
67. surreptitiously hand her a credit chit. She smiles and moves away
68. from the bar, taking his hand as suddenly Sinclair is behind her.
69. He takes the chit from her and hands it back to the human.
70. SINCLAIR
71. I wouldn't.
72. (to the alien woman)
73. You know the rules about crossing
74. species. Stick with the list.
75. HUMAN "JOHN"
76. What're you, a bigot or something?
77. SINCLAIR
78. No. But obviously you've never me
79. an Arnassian before. After they
80. finish, they eat their mate.
81. With that, Sinclair heads away. The human looks back at the
82. woman with a very new perspective. And this time it's her turn
83. to smile...and now she holds up a hand, offering *him* money. On
84. his wary look, we CUT.

91. The following scene is excerpted from the script for "The
92. Gathering." It was filmed, but was eliminated from the
93. final cut due to time restraints.
94. Earlier in the story, Dr. Benjamin Kyle has had...an
95. encounter with what is inside the Vorlon's encounter suit.
96.

97. INT. MEDLAB
98. where Laurel and Kyle look through the glass at Kosh.
99. LAUREL
100. So, Doctor...just what *did* you see
101. when you looked inside that suit?
102. KYLE
103. (a long beat, then:)
104. There are moments in your life when
105. everything crystallizes. When the
106. whole world reshapes itself, right
107. down to its component molecules, and
108. everything changes.
109. (beat)
110. I've looked upon the face of a
111. Vorlon, Laurel...and nothing's the
112. same anymore.
113. And, his thoughts distant, Kyle moves off, leaving Laurel
114. to peer through the mist at the shrouded figure within the
115. isolab, and wonder....

121. Here's a little something I came across in my computer
122.
123. this evening. I had always sensed that the Londo introduction/narration
124. at the top of the pilot was the way to go. But it never hurts to try
125. other avenues...you discover the darndest ideas that way. Anyway, I came
126. up with an alternate introduction, just to see if it worked or not. I
127. rather liked it...and still do, to some degree...but finally opted to go
128. with the Londo intro instead, which is what we'll stick with.
129.

130. But since it's not going to be used, I figured...why not let y'all
131. take a look at what would've been an alternate opening for the pilot?

133. BABYLON 5
134. Insert/Prologue
135. FADE IN:
136. ON STATIC. Then: a BLACK SCREEN, OVER which we HEAR the FEMALE
137. voice of a news broadcast in progress:
138. FEMALE VOICE (vo)
139. _ continue to bring you updates on
140. the Interplanetary News Network.
141. And now, gradually, a PICTURE begins to emerge from the darkness
142. _ grainy, slightly washed out, a VIDEO IMAGE of Babylon 5.
143. FEMALE VOICE (vo)
144. In other news, the Earth Alliance
145. space station Babylon 5 celebrates
146. its first year in operation with the
147. imminent arrival of an ambassador
148. from the Vorlon Empire.
149. And now: a MONTAGE of shots from within B5, and some EFX shots
150. from outside...the casino, the customs area, the bazaar and other
151. areas. During this, the IMAGE BEGINS TO SHRINK, to recede into
152. the distance, and gradually the stars begin to come out on all
153. sides of the picture, framing it. This UNDER:
154. FEMALE VOICE (vo)
155. Located in neutral territory, Babylon
156. 5 has exceeded all expectations in
157. dealing with the many life forms that
158. pass through the five mile long
159. station. As a result, Earth Central
160. has approved an appropriations bill
161. to keep the orbiting freeport open to
162. travelers, businessmen and diplomats
163. for another five years.
164. And now the image shifts, and the picture continues to recede
165. into the distance, now only a few inches across...a grainy black
166. and white image:
167. FEMALE VOICE (vo)
168. Meanwhile, a new binary star
169. discovered by Mars colony scientists
170. has been named Kennedy Proxima, after
171. 20th century president John F.
172. Kennedy, born 340 years ago this
173. week.
174. And now, in the small picture framed by stars, receding more
175. rapidly from view, we SEE footage of JFK speaking before the
176. Democratic convention the eve of his presidential nomination:
177. KENNEDY
178. I believe that the times require
179. imagination, and courage, and
180. perseverance. I'm asking each one of
181. you to be pioneers toward that New
182. Frontier. My call is to the young at
183. heart, regardless of age; to the
184. stout of spirit, regardless of party;
185. to all those who respond to the
186. scriptural call, "Be strong and of
187. good courage. Be not afraid, neither
188. be dismayed." For courage, not
189. complacency, is our need today.
190. UNDER this, Kennedy's image recedes further into the distance,
191. growing smaller and smaller until he is now one of the many
192. surrounding stars splashed across the blackness of space. A
193. moment, and the MUSIC RISES, brave and martial, as we
194. TILT and PAN ACROSS to reveal Babylon 5 itself, up close and
195. personal in all its huge splendor. PUSH IN on the station as
196. a ship approaches, and we HEAR:
197. LAUREL (vo)
198. Confirmed, Delta Gamma Niner, you
199. are clear for docking.
