31. the story will work regardless of renewal
32.

33.

34.

35. It appears that Warner Bros. may not make an announcement concerning
36. B5's renewal status until July. The cast's contracts obligate Warner Bros.
37. to tell the actors whether or not they'll be working for another year by a
38. certain date. Originally, the date was June 15. However, JMS recently had
39. this to say:
40.

41. The info was wrong. The new date is July 15th. WB asked for and
42. got an extension from the cast.
43.

44.

45. A followup asked if this was an unusual thing to do:
46.

47. Well, it's the first time they've done it.
48.

49.

50. Another asked why they did it:
51.

52. Because Warners is working on several options to keep the show on
53. the air in the absence of PTEN, and a crowded syndication market,
54. they've asked for, and received, a 30 day extension on the drop dead day
55. from the cast. So now they have until July 15th to make it work.
56.

57.

58. Is there any hope for renewal?
59.

60. If there were not hope, WB wouldn't have asked for the
61. extension.
62.

63.

64. Stations have already begun filling their fall schedules with the assumption
65. of no fifth season. Won't that prevent B5 from showing up on enough stations
66. to make it economically viable?
67.

68. No, it isn't really a problem...the worst that could happen is
69. that the show might have to go on in January rather than November, but
70. that's only a small gap. The stations haven't locked down their
71. January schedules yet, and there's always fallout from what goes out in
72. November, so there are still many possibilities.
73.

74.

75. What will they do with the extra month?
76.

77. It's a means of making time for them to work out the limitations
78. of the PTEN contract, and the new syndicated market, which has been
79. going through massive changes in the last year or two; basically the
80. market has collapsed or been driven out (depending on the market you're
81. in) by all the new networks and program glut. Virtually every
82. syndicated show has dropped from last year to this year; the only ones
83. that have improved over last year are B5 (7%) and Xena (18%). Just
84. about everything else has dropped bigtime.
85.

86.

87.

88. It's worth noting that July 15 is only a deadline and the announcement could
89. come at any time before then. Presumably
90. Warner Bros. would have asked for more time than they thought
91. they were likely to need, just to be on the safe side. Of course, that's
92. just speculation and isn't based on any inside knowledge.
93.

94. When there are more details, you'll see them on the Lurker's Guide home page.
