  25. to enable her to more easily carry one of them.
  26. <li>@@@848310531 The Vorlons, apparently determined to wipe the Shadows
  27. out once and for all, have begun destroying worlds that have had
  28. contact with the Shadows, and to that end have amassed a fleet of
  29. thousands of ships.
  30. <li>@@@848310531 Sheridan has returned to Babylon 5, as has Garibaldi.
  31. <li>@@@848310531 Initially, when the Vorlons and Shadows took on the task
  32. of looking after the younger races, they were equally balanced, obeyed
  33. rules of engagement, and respected each other's perspectives. But at
  34. some point, one of them grew tired of the arrangement and the two
  35. started fighting in earnest, with the younger races caught in the
  36. middle.

  47. <li>@@@848310531 Why did Lorien accompany Sheridan?
  48. <li>@@@848310531 How did they get to Babylon 5? Was that Lorien's ship?
  49. <li>@@@848647375 What exactly did Lyta learn when she scanned Kosh?
  50. <li>@@@848785481 What exactly does Sheridan have in mind to end the war
  51. once and for all?
  52. <li>@@@848989312 What happened to Marcus' family? His brother died in a
  53. Shadow attack
  54. (<a href="045.html">"Matters of Honor,"</a>)

  56. </ul>
  57. <h2><a name="AN">Analysis</a></h2>
  58. <ul>
  59. <p>
  60. <li>@@@848786516 Delenn said, "Everyone I hold dear is gone." She didn't
  61. list Lennier among them. Why not?
  62. <p>
  63. <li>@@@848481032 Lyta says she allowed the Vorlons to modify her because
  64. she believed. Believed in what? What did they tell her about their
  65. intentions? Does she know anything about the Shadows and Vorlons,
  66. and the nature of their conflict, that Sheridan would find useful?
  67. <p>
  68. <li>@@@848358319 What made the Vorlons change their strategy? Most likely
  69. it has something to do with the "unexpected door" they feel Sheridan
  70. opened on Z'ha'dum
  71. (<a href="067.html">"The Hour of the Wolf."</a>)
  72. By attempting to wipe out the Shadows, it's arguable they've lost the
  73. war on a philosophical level; attempting to wipe out a race to gain
  74. supremacy is exactly the method the Shadows advocate.
  75. <p>
  76. On the other hand, if there's no way to get the Shadows to stop
  77. fighting and causing wars except by completely destroying them, the
  78. Vorlons may have reached the conclusion that the very existence of the
  79. Shadows means their philosophy can never take hold.
  80. <p>
  81. <li>@@@848358319 Given that the old Kosh, at least according to Lyta,
  82. cared about the younger races, would he have approved of the Vorlons'
  83. change in strategy? If not, will the piece of him still alive in
  84. Sheridan try to stop the plan?
  85. <p>
  86. <li>@@@865641416 Lyta referred to the old Kosh as "the <em>real</em> Kosh."
  87. What isn't real about the new Kosh? What is the new Kosh's actual
  88. name (or its human-pronounceable version?)
  89. <p>
  90. <li>@@@848785482 Lorien's visit to B5 would seem to indicate that he, at
  91. least, still cares about the younger races. What can
  92. he do about it? Presumably he'll be able to provide valuable
  93. information, but does he have any capabilities beyond that? For
  94. example, does he have access to technology millions of years more
  95. advanced than even the Shadows and Vorlons?
  96. <p>
  97. In
  98. <a href="068.html">"Whatever Happened to Mr. Garibaldi?"</a>
  99. he appeared to have a significant presence on the "dream plane" (for
  100. lack of a better term) through which Kosh sent the dreams to Sheridan in
  101. <a href="033.html">"All Alone in the Night"</a>
  102. and
  103. <a href="059.html">"Interludes and Examinations."</a>
  104. It's plausible that that's where much of a Vorlon's consciousness
  105. lives; if so, Lorien may be capable of much more direct impact on the
  106. Vorlons than his physical presence implies. Whether the same is true
  107. in the Shadows' case is less clear, but the fact that the Eye at
  108. Z'ha'dum found Ivanova while she was in the Great Machine
  109. (<a href="049.html">"Voices of Authority"</a>)
  110. suggests that they too have some presence in that mode of existence.
  111. <p>
  112. <li>@@@848614209 Destroying planets may seem excessive, but perhaps the
  113. Vorlons are doing so, rather than simply wiping out all surface life,
  114. because of the Shadows' habit of burying their ships underground
  115. (<a href="052.html">"Messages From Earth"</a>)
  116. and building cities underground
  117. (<a href="066.html">"Z'ha'dum."</a>)
  118. They may feel that completely destroying a planet that's been visited
  119. by the Shadows is the only way to ensure that there are no surprises
  120. left behind.
  121. <p>
  122. <li>@@@854124175 Is the current Vorlon rampage due in part to the death
  123. of the original Kosh at the hands of the Shadows? If so, there's a
  124. parallel to the Earth-Minbari War, in which, according to Delenn
  125. (<a href="055.html">"Ceremonies of Light and Dark"</a>)
  126. the Minbari went collectively mad after the death of their leader
  127. Dukhat at human hands.
  128. <p>
  129. <li>@@@848358915 By wiping out younger races as they battle the Shadows,
  130. the Vorlons can no longer really claim to be looking after their
  131. juniors. What will the other First Ones think of that? They don't
  132. seem to be on particularly good terms with the Vorlons to begin with
  133. (<a href="049.html">"Voices of Authority"</a>)
  134. and this change in attitude may further irritate their peers. Lorien
  135. will likely be able to provide greater insight into the feelings of
  136. the other First Ones toward the Vorlons.
  137. <p>
  138. <li>@@@848684259 If the Vorlons are truly intent on wiping out any worlds
  139. the Shadows have touched, that means they'll be targeting Mars,
  140. Centauri Prime, Earth, and B5. Depending on how recently a planet
  141. has to have had contact to be considered tainted, they may also
  142. destroy Narn. Only the Minbari seem, so far, to have never been
  143. under Shadow influence, so their homeworld may be spared.
  144. <p>
  145. The only evidence so far of Shadow influence is the assassination
  146. attempt against Kosh in
  147. <a href="000.html">"The Gathering,"</a>
  148. but given that the Shadows didn't try to touch Kosh until the Vorlon
  149. offensive in
  150. <a href="059.html">"Interludes and Examinations,"</a>
  151. the hallway meeting in
  152. <a href="013.html">"Signs and Portents"</a>
  153. notwithstanding (Kosh initiated that confrontation too)
  154. it's more likely the Minbari warriors were acting of their own
  155. volition.
  156. <p>
  157. <li>@@@865733889 The Vorlons' new tack is somewhat ironic, given that they
  158. filed an official protest when the Centauri used mass drivers to
  159. bombard Narn from space
  160. (<a href="042.html">"The Long, Twilight Struggle."</a>)
  161. Clearly the Vorlons don't have any qualms about attacking planets
  162. from space if <em>they're</em> the ones doing it.
  163. <p>
  164. <li>@@@848684377 Since the Shadows have already come to Centauri Prime,
  165. could the blasted landscape of
  166. <a href="061.html">"War Without End, Part Two"</a>
  167. be due to a Vorlon attack, not the doing of the Shadows? If the
  168. Vorlons attack because of the Shadow presence, that would explain
  169. Londo's bitterness toward Sheridan, who he might consider to be
  170. on the side of the Vorlons.
  171. <p>
  172. <li>@@@848786082 Does Sheridan share the Vorlons' goal of wiping the
  173. Shadows out completely, or does he have some other plan in mind? The
  174. fact that Lorien accompanied him suggests the latter, since Lorien
  175. commented that he didn't approve of warfare among his juniors
  176. (<a href="068.html">"Whatever Happened to Mr. Garibaldi?"</a>)
  177. On the other hand, his speech to the crowd did imply that he had
  178. genocide against the Shadows in mind.
  179. <p>
  180. <li>@@@848787026 The original Kosh tried to train Sheridan "to fight
  181. legends"
  182. (<a href="035.html">"Hunter, Prey."</a>)
  183. But in his speech, Sheridan appeared to be setting himself up as a
  184. legend of sorts: "the only man to come back from Z'ha'dum alive."
  185. (A claim, incidentally, which isn't true; Morden and Anna were on
  186. Z'ha'dum and left alive, if changed.) His bravado seems to indicate he
  187. now sees himself as having a larger role to play than before, and
  188. validates the Shadows' view of him as a nexus
  189. (<a href="066.html">"Z'ha'dum."</a>)
  190. <p>
  191. @@@850286419 Oddly, in
  192. <a href="059.html">"Interludes and Examinations,"</a>
  193. Sheridan pointed out to Kosh that the <em>Vorlons</em> were legends,
  194. or wanted to be perceived as such. Did Kosh know that eventually
  195. Sheridan might have to combat the Vorlons?
  196. <p>
  197. <li>@@@848787026 Sheridan returned from Z'ha'dum under unknown
  198. circumstances, accompanied by an alien he won't tell anyone about.
  199. Garibaldi's whereabouts were unknown for two weeks, and he turned up in
  200. a ship that self-destructed to avoid being closely investigated. Why,
  201. then, do Delenn, Ivanova, and the others accept both of them back
  202. seemingly without question? Given the threat of implanted
  203. personalities and other modifications
  204. (<a href="041.html">"Divided Loyalties,"</a>
  205. <a href="066.html">"Z'ha'dum"</a>)
  206. the crew should at least be skeptical that both returnees are what they
  207. appear.
  208. <p>
  209. <li>@@@865734218 Sheridan's speech from the catwalk echoes his appearance
  210. on the catwalk in the dream in
  211. <a href="033.html">"All Alone in the Night."</a>
  212. If Garibaldi symbolized "the man in between," a description that fits
  213. Lorien at least as well as anyone else, then was the Sheridan on the
  214. catwalk "the man on the other side," presumably the other side of
  215. death? If so, Sheridan has now become that man.
  216. <p>
  217. <li>@@@855943691 G'Kar's refusal to scream was foreshadowed in
  218. <a href="005.html">"The Parliament of Dreams."</a>

  220. and tortured, he said he would rather die than cry out.

  224. <li>@@@853315199 Marcus has never been romantically involved with anyone.
  225. This was hinted at in
  226. <a href="057.html">"A Late Delivery From Avalon,"</a>
  227. in which he jokingly compared himself to Sir Galahad, the chaste knight
  228. from Arthurian legend. In
  229. <a href="055.html">"Ceremonies of Light and Dark,"</a>
  230. he told Delenn he'd lost a woman he cared a great deal for, but that's
  231. not necessarily a contradiction; he didn't say she felt the same way.

  234. Star ships was originally written and filmed for
  235. <a href="068.html">"Whatever Happened to Mr. Garibaldi?"</a>
  236. but was cut from that episode for time.
  237. <p>
  238. <li>@@@850502410 This is the first regular episode to feature all the cast
  239. members listed in the opening credits; aside from

  243. <li>@@@848389578 G'Kar was whipped 39 times, because 40 would kill a Narn.

  265. It's the roller coaster theory: if you move someone to horror or fear or
  266. shock from a neutral place, the emotional jump is less than if they're
  267. laughing...then suddenly you whipsaw them into the absolute emotional
  268. opposite.

  270. <li>@@@848469111 <em>A planet-busting weapon is so improbable as to be
  271. more magic than technology.</em><br>
  272. Re: "magictech"...I believe it was Arthur C. Clarke who pointed out,
  273. "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."
  274. <p>
  275. You wanna go argue with Clarke, feel free.
  276. <p>
  277. Lemme just make one point here. In the handful of decades between the
  278. discovery of the atom, and its use at Hiroshima, we learned how to
  279. blow up substantial portions of the planet and render it
  280. uninhabitable. But it would've taken a lot of them, hundreds, to do
  281. the job. In the 50 years since then, with the development of
  282. thermonuclear weaponry, the job is even easier. It's been reckoned
  283. that you'd only need about 75 really decent sized thermonuclear
  284. detonations to render the entire continental United States dead and
  285. uninhabitable.
  286. <p>
  287. The shadows and the vorlons are *millions* of years ahead of us.
  288. We're talking differences in technology that are orders of magnitude
  289. beyond what we can hope to comprehend.
  290. <p>
  291. I think a planet killer eminently achievable.
  292. <p>
  293. <li>@@@848607166 <em>If the Shadows and Vorlons are so far advanced, why
  294. haven't the Shadows wiped everyone out already, including B5?</em><br>
  295. Because up until now, they haven't been out to destroy
  296. everyone, that's not the point...you can't sow chaos if there's no one
  297. around in which to sow that chaos. And they may have some ideas on how
  298. B5 could be turned to their advantage....
  299. <p>
  300. <li>@@@848786154 Bear in mind that the White Stars are partially based on
  301. Vorlon technology, which is similar in strength to the Shadows. That
  302. helps a lot. Also, other ships can have an influence in sufficient
  303. numbers. Even a lion can be brought down by a sufficient number of
  304. hyenas. The idea that higher technology always equals victory didn't
  305. help Custer.
  306. <p>
  307. <li>@@@850325094 I don't see it really as a change of heart...they've always
  308. been very ruthless in their way. Remember, it was the Vorlons who
  309. simply decided to off Deathwalker in first season.
  310. <p>
  311. There's some amount of escalation going on, obviously, which
  312. will be explained a bit more in upcoming episodes, but they've always
  313. been this way, it's your perception of them that's at odds. You fell
  314. for what they wanted you to see them to be.
  315. <p>
  316. <li>@@@850523463 <em>Who's the worse enemy, the Shadows or the

  328. She can keep secrets a little...but not if he pushes.
  329. <p>
  330. <li>@@@848917005 <em>Was Sheridan's uniform different?</em><br>
  331. No, that's the funny thing...I've seen a number of posts about
  332. how his uniform was changed, but it *wasn't*. It was exactly the same
  333. outfit right out of the wardrobe closet...not sewn, not cleaned, just
  334. dusted off a bit, by hand, the way he might've upon coming in. You can
  335. clearly see that the sleeve is still torn as he's up there.
  336. <p>
  337. All I can figure is that the red Z'ha'dum lighting made it look
  338. a lot worse than it was.
  339. <p>
  340. <li>@@@850550250 <em>Is Ivanova's hug a sign she's attracted to
  341. Sheridan?</em><br>
  342. No, it was just relief, letting her guard down, allowing
  343. herself to feel, which she hadn't done much before this. There's no
  344. romantic interest there. You can have situations where men and women
  345. work together, and can care about one another, without it turning into
  346. more than that.
  347. <p>
  348. Men seem to understand this less often than women.
  349. <p>
  350. <li>@@@848684042 <em>Sheridan seemed a lot more belligerent, and
  351. seemed to be suggesting genocide against the Shadows.</em><br>
  352. Yup, I'd say it's very likely that some people close to Sheridan are
  353. going to be wondering about his attitude...and maybe even acting on it.
  354. <p>
  355. <li>@@@848786154 Someone should get outraged...and will. It's

  359. <li>@@@865283274 Certainly there will be some people who will wonder
