  24. <li> Delenn and Kosh tell Sheridan about the Shadows and the Vorlons:<br>

  28. There are beings in the universe billions of years older than either of
  29. our races. Once, long ago, they walked among the stars like giants.
  30. Vast, timeless... they taught the younger races, explored beyond the
  31. Rim, created great empires. But to all things, there is an end.
  32. Slowly, over a million years, the First Ones went away. Some passed
  33. beyond the stars, never to return. Some simply disappeared.
  34. <dt><b>S:</b>
  35. <dd>
  36. I'm sure this is all very interesting, but what does any of this
  37. have to do with Morden?
  38. <dt><b>D:</b>
  39. <dd>
  40. Not all of the First Ones have gone away. A few stayed behind. Hidden
  41. or asleep, waiting for the day when they may be needed. When the
  42. Shadows come again.
  43. <dt><b>S:</b>

  45. Shadows?
  46. <dt><b>D:</b>
  47. <dd>
  48. We have no other name for them. The Shadows were old when even the
  49. ancients were young. They battled one another over and over across a
  50. million years. The last Great War against the Shadows was ten thousand
  51. years ago. It was the last time the ancients walked openly among us.
  52. The Shadows were only defeated, not destroyed. A thousand years ago,
  53. the Shadows returned to their places of power, rebuilt them, and began
  54. to stretch forth their hand. Before they could strike, they were
  55. defeated by an alliance of worlds, including the Minbari and the few
  56. remaining First Ones who had not yet passed beyond the veil. When
  57. they had finished, the First Ones went away. All but one.
  58. <dt><b>S:</b>

  60. There's still one of them left. Where?

  76. <p>
  77. <li> Delenn's question to Kosh (cf.
  78. <a href="022.html">"Chrysalis"</a>)
  79. was, "Have the Shadows returned to Z'ha'dum?"
  80. <p>
  81. <li> The Icarus, an Earth exploration vessel carrying Anna Sheridan, arrived
  82. at Z'ha'dum in late 2256 (see
  83. <a href="#AN:dates">Analysis.</a>)
  84. A landing party, exploring a cave, inadvertently
  85. discovered the Shadows, awakening them. The Shadows destroyed the
  86. Icarus so its crew could not return to warn others, and killed the
  87. crewmembers who wouldn't cooperate. Morden was one of the crew.
  88. <p>
  89. <li> Delenn and Kosh knew about the reawakening of the Shadows immediately --
  90. maybe even witnessed it somehow as it was happening.
  91. <p>
  92. <li> The Earth government has formed a new agency, the Ministry of Peace
  93. (nicknamed "Minipax" by its employees,) with the alleged goal of
  94. helping reduce internal tensions among the EA's populace. Its first
  95. visible action was to establish a program called the Night Watch,
  96. paying people 50 credits a week to wear black armbands and report
  97. suspicious people to the authorities so that troublemakers can be
  98. reformed before they disrupt the peace.
  99. </ul>
  100. <h2><a name="UQ">Unanswered Questions</a></h2>
  101. <ul>
  102. <li> Is Sheridan's wife still alive?
  103. <li> What is the Ministry of Peace really up to?
  104. <li> Will Talia join?
  105. <li> Similarly, what significance is there in the fact that Delenn narrated
  106. Sheridan's vision? Was she sharing it with him, or had she seen it
  107. before?
  108. <li> What kind of information did Morden bring for Londo?
  109. <li> What, if anything, happened to the ship that originally discovered
  110. the ruins on Z'ha'dum? Someone must have discovered them before the
  111. Icarus' arrival, since the crew of the Icarus knew they were going
  112. to explore an ancient civilization.
  113. </ul>
  114. <h2><a name="AN">Analysis</a></h2>
  115. <ul>
  116. <li> Delenn's opening remarks about the First Ones bear a striking similarity
  117. to G'Kar's comments about the beings at Sigma 957 (cf.
  118. <a href="006.html">"Mind War."</a>)
  119. Could those beings also be First Ones? If so, are the Vorlons aware
  120. that they are still around in some form?
  121. <li> Her remarks also echo her comments about humans in
  122. <a href="020.html">"Babylon Squared"</a>
  123. -- suggesting that she believes humanity has the capacity to eventually
  124. rival the First Ones.
  125. <li> Delenn stated that all but one of the First Ones have gone away, and
  126. that the last one is Kosh. But does she mean that only one race
  127. remains, or only one individual? Or is there a difference where
  128. Vorlons are concerned? (See
  129. <a href="#JS:vorlons">jms speaks</a>)
  130. <li> If Kosh would be recognized by "everyone" because (as implied by Delenn)
  131. his race had once walked openly among lesser ones, it's plausible that
  132. Kosh may resemble something from legends thousands of years old -- an
  133. angel, perhaps, since the Shadows bear some resemblance to demons and
  134. Kosh's suit seems to have room for wings. This would tie in with
  135. Kosh's statement in
  136. <a href="035.html">"Hunter, Prey"</a>
  137. that Sheridan must be ready "to fight legends" before Kosh will reveal
  138. himself -- otherwise he'd be mistaken by some as a divine being rather
  139. than an alien. Of course, angels and demons are far from the only
  140. figures in the human pantheon, let alone alien mythology, and Kosh
  141. may be something else entirely.
  142. <li> Or the encounter suit may allow Kosh to control who gets visions like
  143. Sheridan's; if he took it off, everyone who tried to look at him would
  144. see something different, something personal. (See
  145. <a href="#JS:hand">jms speaks.</a>)
  146. This brings up a potential connection to the flashes in
  147. <a href="020.html">"Babylon Squared"</a>;
  148. perhaps the Vorlons were involved in Babylon 4's time travel, and
  149. the flashes were a side effect of that.
  150. <li> Why did Delenn demand to see Kosh in
  151. <a href="022.html">"Chrysalis"</a>
  152. before she was willing to undergo her change? She seems to know enough
  153. about Vorlons that she would have had some idea what he looked like.
  154. Did she simply want to verify that Kosh was one of the First Ones
  155. mentioned in the Minbari history books? Or does his appearance have
  156. something more directly to do with her wanting to become partially
  157. human? That's assuming he was showing himself to her at all, rather
  158. than sending her a dream sequence.
  159. <li> How did Kosh know what happened on Z'ha'dum? Or was he just inventing
  160. the scene he showed Sheridan based on what he figured must have
  161. happened? Perhaps he gleaned it from his meeting with Morden in
  162. <a href="013.html">"Signs and Portents,"</a>
  163. though Delenn claims she and Kosh have known about it for the past
  164. three years.
  165. <li> <a name="AN:dates">The Icarus expedition</a>
  166. seems to have set forth in late 2256. In
  167. <a href="024.html">"Revelations,"</a>
  168. which is set in early 2259, Sheridan's sister says that it's been
  169. two years since Anna's death. In this episode, Delenn implies that
  170. the Shadows were awakened three years earlier. Late 2256 makes sense
  171. if both of them were rounding.
  172. <li> The Shadows on Z'ha'dum may have been awakened in 2256,
  173. but they weren't the first. The creature in
  174. <a href="027.html">"The Long Dark"</a>
  175. awoke during the Earth-Minbari War and was headed for Z'ha'dum.
  176. What caused it to wake up before its masters did, assuming its
  177. masters are the beings the Icarus discovered?
  178. <li> Delenn's question was, "Have the Shadows <em>returned</em> to
  179. Z'ha'dum?" That implies they were elsewhere; if so, where? Perhaps
  180. the same thing that drew the abovementioned creature to Z'ha'dum
  181. also drew the Shadows there. In that case, they may have already
  182. been awake before the Icarus arrived.
  183. <li> Sheridan let Morden go so he wouldn't suspect that his true nature
  184. is known. But the damage may already be done; Morden and his
  185. associates are likely to be suspicious of his sudden release.
  186. The reason given to Morden -- "it was all a mistake" -- is going to
  187. seem especially suspicious; "the Centauri asked for your release"
  188. or "you're right; we can't hold you without charges" seem like they
  189. would have been better excuses. Of course, the latter may be what
  190. Zack told Morden.
  191. <li> The Night Watch armbands seem more a tool of terror than of peace,
  192. reminiscent of the armbands worn by Nazis and other tyrannical
  193. regimes, a constant reminder to everyone that they're under
  194. observation. The program seems designed to cause people to turn in
  195. their neighbors, and it's probably naive to believe that people
  196. accused of suspicious behavior (or worse, suspicious "attitudes")
  197. will simply be put into therapy and
  198. released shortly thereafter. Combined with the Ministry of Public
  199. Morale (cf.
  200. <a href="037.html">"And Now For a Word"</a>)
  201. it suggests the Clark government is more interested in keeping the
  202. citizenry under its thumb than anything noble.
  203. <li> If it's true that the Night Watch considers thoughts dangerous, they
  204. may well be involved with Psi Corps somehow; certainly it would make
  205. sense for them to try to involve telepaths in rooting out undesirables.
  206. Or, perhaps more likely, they're simply another of Psi Corps'
  207. machinations.
  208. <li> The Shadows aren't the only ones inhabiting places of power. Londo
  209. observed that the technomages (cf.
  210. <a href="025.html">"The Geometry of Shadows"</a>)
  211. were usually cloistered in their places of power. And now the
  212. technomages are headed for the Rim, or beyond it, because of a great
  213. darkness approaching; what do they hope to achieve?
  214. <li> Unless the holding cell cameras are very advanced, the Shadows'
  215. invisibility is not all that good. Presumably there are aliens on the
  216. station who can see well into the infrared or ultraviolet; the Shadows
  217. would be easily detected by such beings in any public area. Perhaps
  218. that's how Kosh knew who Morden was in
  219. <a href="013.html">"Signs and Portents."</a>
  220. On the other hand, it may simply be that some aliens <em>have</em>
  221. seen the Shadows with Morden, but didn't think them remarkable enough
  222. to be worth mentioning; they're probably far from the weirdest-looking
  223. creatures walking around the station.
  224. <li> Talia was able to detect the Shadows without even trying. That suggests
  225. that telepaths will be a valuable weapon against the Shadows -- which
  226. leads to the suspicion that the Shadows are working to co-opt Psi-Corps
  227. behind the scenes so human telepaths will be less likely to work
  228. against them. It's not clear whether her ability to sense the Shadows
  229. was typical for a P5 telepath, or a result of her enhanced abilities
  230. (cf. <a href="006.html">"Mind War."</a>)
  231. <li> It's also worth noting that Talia saw Morden darken the same way Delenn
  232. did in
  233. <a href="013.html">"Signs and Portents"</a>
  234. -- does this mean Delenn has some telepathic ability?
  235. <li> In
  236. <a href="004.html">"Infection,"</a>
  237. Franklin says the Ikarans built their war machines to fend off
  238. invasions, the last of which was 1000 years ago. Could they have been
  239. participants in the last conflict with the Shadows? Will the
  240. technology obtained by Earth in that episode be used in the upcoming
  241. war?
  242. <li> Morden's triangular hand placement while he was in his cell is
  243. reminiscent of Lennier's meditation posture. Perhaps there's no
  244. connection, or perhaps there is.
  245. </ul>
  246. <h2><a name="NO">Notes</a></h2>
  247. <ul>
  248. <li> The name "Ministry of Peace" and its abbreviation Minipax are from
  249. George Orwell's "1984."
  250. <li> The convention mentioned by Talia is probably not the one described
  251. in the novel
  252. <a href="/lurk/novels/001.html">"Voices"</a>
  253. because the novel takes place before
  254. <a href="031.html">"The Coming of Shadows."</a>
  255. <li> Delenn's narrative bears some resemblance to Gandalf's description of
  256. the coming of Sauron near the beginning of the first book of "The Lord
  257. of the Rings." In particular, this passage:
  258. <blockquote>
  259. "The rumours that you have heard are true: he has indeed arisen again
  260. and left his hold in Mirkwood and returned to his ancient fastness in
  261. the Dark Tower of Mordor. That name even you hobbits have heard of,
  262. like a shadow on the borders of old stories. Always after a defeat
  263. and a respite, the Shadow takes another shape and grows again."
  264. </blockquote>
  265. </ul>
  266. <h2><a name="JS">jms speaks</a></h2>
  267. <ul>
  268. <li> <a name="JS:about">"In the Shadow of Z'ha'dum"</a> is an
  269. episode that is as emotionally raw as
  270. <a href="022.html">"Chrysalis"</a>
  271. with some major
  272. revelations that force Sheridan to make the most important decision
  273. of his life.
  274. <p>
  275. <li> Correct; Delenn and Kosh have said nothing about G'Kar's claims
  276. because they're trying to keep a low profile.
  277. <p>
  278. <li> The shadows know that Kosh knows, because the Vorlons *always* know;
  279. they also know (or think) that they're in a superior position because
  280. if Kosh should tell the others, either a) most wouldn't believe him,
  281. or b) the shadows would move aggressively now, costing untold lives.
  282. They're more worried about an alliance between lots of races than the
  283. Vorlons alone.
  284. <p>
  285. <li> I would not create a race as potentially unstoppable as the
  286. shadows without making sure they had one -- but only one -- Achilles'
  287. heel. Though it may take our characters a long time to figure out what
  288. that is...almost *too* long....
  289. <p>
  290. <li> <a name="JS:vorlons">No, "all but one" refers to the race,</a>
  291. not an individual. The First
  292. Ones are various species/races. One of these species/races is still
  293. around at this time. The Vorlons. Of which Kosh is one.
  294. <p>
  295. <li>@@@882988098 BTW, the one big reason that Sakai [Catherine, Sinclair's
  296. old flame in the first season] could not have filled Anna Sheridan's
  297. role in awakening the shadows...and this is the one thing that everyone
  298. who advocates this theory tends to forget...is that they were *already
  299. up and awake* in the first season, as we saw in "Signs and Portents."
  300. They were up, around, and had had some time to build stuff up, reclaim
  301. some of their ships, and in other ways get organized and develop their
  302. contacts.
  303. <p>
  304. Also, Morden was already working for them.
  305. <p>
  306. <li>@@@838583849 <em>Why did Delenn demand to see Kosh?</em><br>
  307. She wanted to see Kosh to assure herself that the Vorlons, who
  308. she'd never met before, were who she believed them to be, and that this
  309. was a true Vorlon and not a pretender. He had to be in place as part
  310. of Valen's prophecy.
  311. <p>
  312. <li> The rim, and the "veil" beyond which the bulk of the First Ones
  313. passed, is the Galactic rim. As for why the shadows are doing what
  314. they're doing...that's kind of the key to the whole thing, which we
  315. haven't turned yet.
  316. <p>
  317. <li>@@@839189753 Some of the first ones just got bored after millions of years,
  318. and went off in general. The rest, for the most part, went beyond the
  319. Rim for the same reason you cut down old trees to make room for new
  320. ones.
  321. <p>
  322. <li> <em>Are the First Ones as old as the universe itself?</em><br>
  323. Well, to some degree you're limited by the amount of time it
  324. takes to evolve life per se, then into intelligent life, then into
  325. spacefaring life. You need time after the Big Bang for planets to be
  326. formed, cool, develop environments capable of supporting life...then
  327. the long haul begins.
  328. <p>
  329. So yes, on the one hand, you've got races that are millions of
  330. years older than humans, who were prowling around while we were still
  331. furred, fanged, and slamming bones together. But they're not as old as
  332. the universe, because they can't be.
  333. <p>
  334. <li> Exploration and archeological/scientific vessels like this usually
  335. piggy-back on Explorer or other jump-capable ships, with an arrangement
  336. that they'll be there for X-number of days or weeks, then another ship
  337. will come that way and again piggy-back them out.
  338. <p>
  339. <li> Thanks. I like Vir a lot. Many folks were willing to write him off
  340. in the beginning, not understanding that there was more beneath the
  341. surface (a problem Vir has also had in his "life"). But you gotta be
  342. careful; characters have a way of surprising you. And I like that, and
  343. intended that, Vir be the first one to stand up to Morden.
  344. <p>
  345. <li> Again, look at the Kosh/Morden scene in
  346. <a href="013.html">"Signs."</a>
  347. A light is suddenly blown out off to one side. Morden didn't move.
  348. So who did it...but his constant companions?
  349. <p>
  350. <li> <em>Kosh's command to Morden in "Signs"</em><br>
  351. His comment would have been addressed to the shadows and their current
  352. emissary.
  353. <p>
  354. <li>@@@839120486 <em>How does Morden communicate with the Shadows so
  355. easily?</em><br>
  356. Well, one can always assume that Morden received some help, in one form
  357. or another, in adjusting to the shadows....
  358. <p>
  359. <li> The difference is just in accent. ZA HA DOOM is the way I pronounce
  360. it, but ZA cHA DOOM is also acceptable (from someone who's learned to
  361. more or less accept the 47 different ways in which one may pronounce
  362. straczynski).
  363. <p>
  364. <li> And, as you note, one of things that I like to play with is the
  365. layering of ambiguity. Let's say, just for the sake of argument, that
  366. we set up two sides: Shadowmen vs. Vorlons, which looks like evil vs.
  367. good. Fundamentally, I would find that boring. What you would then
  368. have to do is get into WHY they're doing what they do, and HOW they're
  369. doing what they do.
  370. <p>
  371. There is, for instance, the "good" that says, "We know what's best
  372. for you, we'll protect you, nurture you, but you'll do it our way, and
  373. we'll keep you away from ideas and beliefs you shouldn't be exposed
  374. to." Okay, maybe that fits one definition of good...but is it?
  375. <p>
  376. On the flip side, for instance, there's the "bad" that says "There
  377. must be conflict and death, because it's only through conflict and
  378. death that we grow stronger, that we can eventually create an ordered
  379. universe. The gene pool must be kept strong. To do that, there must
  380. be war and strife and death." Okay, maybe that fits the definition
  381. of evil, but is it?
  382. <p>
  383. The key, again and always, is that nothing is what it seems on
  384. Babylon 5. And even if it looks like it IS what it is, you have to
  385. look at WHY it is what it is...and maybe at that point it isn't.
  386. <p>
  387. One of the things about this show is that you see as much as
  388. you're willing to see. You can gloss over it, say, "Okay, these are
  389. the good guys, these are the bad guys." But the closer you look, the
  390. more you see the shades. I imagine when the Shadowmen are more fully
  391. revealed, some folks'll think we're going for a basic good/evil
  392. conflict...but believe me, there's a hell of a lot more involved in
  393. it than that.
  394. <p>
  395. <li> <a name="JS:hand"><em>(From a 1993 GEnie message -- presumably we can
  396. replace "Sinclair" with "Sheridan" now.)</em></a>
  397. <p>
  398. I've just sat here for five minutes trying to decide how to phrase this
  399. and not give something vital away...and it's damn near impossible.
  400. <p>
  401. (another five minutes passes)
  402. <p>
  403. Okay, look...do this. Get a piece of paper. Write down the following:
  404. "Sinclair sees the hand, but Sinclair does not see the hand. And
  405. five other people standing in the room would not see the hand that
  406. Sinclair sees, or see the hand that they see."
  407. <p>
  408. I know it looks like gibberish. But trust me on this. Put the piece of
  409. paper in your wallet (next to the condom) and hold onto it for about two
  410. years. Assuming we're still around that long, at some point that
  411. message will make absolute and perfect sense.
  412. <p>
  413. <li> Kosh is always and forever *exactly* what he appears to be, no less and
  414. no more. At the same time, Kosh is absolutely *nothing* like what he
  415. appears to be.
  416. <p>
  417. These are not contradictory statements.
  418. <p>
  419. And this is about the straightest answer I've given yet on the subject,
  420. believe it or not.
  421. <p>
  422. <li> I think it would be just about impossible to put Kosh on the outside
  423. of a mug.
  424. <p>
  425. <li> Exactly. You will note that Macabee says, of the Ministry, "...or
  426. Minipax, as we like to call it around the office." It's an in-house
  427. joke, not the real name of the thing.
  428. <p>
  429. <li> Re: the two speeches by G'Kar and Delenn...yes, they were constructed
  430. specifically to echo one another, because the walkers at Sigma 957 are
  431. one of the older races that flit through but don't really pay any
  432. attention to us anymore.
  433. <p>

  436. <p>
  437. <li> Kosh is a Vorlon. The Vorlons fought the Shadows. There are many
  438. Vorlons, back home. (The Writer committed an error in that he used

  440. <p>
  441. <li> <em>Was Kosh's line about Sheridan going to Z'ha'dum a warning or a
  442. threat?</em><br>
  443. Yes.
  444. <p>
  445. <li> How do you get a shot of Morden's head on a pike past the censors?
  446. <p>
  447. Easy.
  448. <p>
  449. You frame the shot so the head is draped...in shadows.
  450. <p>
  451. If I were to be planning such a thing, of course....

  453. <li> MPs (Military Police) also wear armbands. So do the Red Cross and some

  455. <p>
  456. <li> <em>How many times did you shoot the scene with Talia slapping
  457. Sheridan?</em><br>
  458. Only twice. Mainly 'cause she tended to whack him real hard.
  459. [...]
  460. The take you see is the first one printed.
  461. <p>
  462. <li> He said stop because Zack had found the right wavelength (at least
  463. briefly) and didn't want him to go further and lose it again.
  464. <p>
  465. <li> <em>Will Vir, even metaphorically, get to wave at Morden?</em><br>
  466. That would be telling.
  467. <p>
  468. <li> <em>Was the Great Machine inside Epsilon 3 built by a member race of the
  469. First Ones?</em><br>
  470. Could be.
  471. <p>
  472. <li> No, Varn was not one of the First Ones.

  475. <ul>
  476. <li> <em>Bruce: what has the most challenging episode been for you so
  477. far, and why?</em><br>
  478. The episode we just finished filming today.
  479. It's called In the Shadow of Za'Ha'Dum and my character deals with
