  22. <ul>
  23. <li> Every five years, the Drazi people divide by random selection into
  24. two equal groups, green and purple, and fight for supremacy in a
  25. contest that lasts a full year. The group that wins is the dominant
  26. one until the next battle. Group membership isn't permanent and
  27. has no deeper meaning than the color of cloth one happens to select
  28. randomly from a container.
  29. <li> The only son of the Centauri Emperor recently died, leaving no clear
  30. successor to the throne. This has served to increase the scheming
  31. among the Centauri nobility. At least one group, disgusted with the
  32. decay of the Republic, intends to grab for the throne when the Emperor
  33. dies; Londo has all but pledged to support that group.
  34. </ul>

  36. <ul>
  37. <li> Where were the techno-mages going?
  38. <li> Will they return or otherwise make their influence felt?
  39. <li> How do they know about the upcoming conflict?
  40. <li> <em>What</em> do they know about it? Are they aware of the Shadows,
  41. for instance?
  42. <li> What part do Londo's new partners want him to play in their
  43. machinations?
  44. <li> What repercussions will Ivanova's solution to the Drazi problem have?
  45. <li> Were the winged creatures on Londo's back significant, or just a
  46. meaningless practical joke?
  47. </ul>
  48. <h2><a name="AN">Analysis</a></h2>
  49. <ul>
  50. <li> Londo seems to have made up his mind about following his ambition.
  51. He appeared to be seeking the techno-mages' endorsement for his own
  52. political gain, rather than for the good of the Republic. It remains
  53. to be seen whether he'll have the willpower to follow through with
  54. his newfound assertiveness when lives are at stake, though Elric's
  55. statement about the future indicates he will.
  56. <li> Londo is willing to trust Vir with other people's secrets ("He can
  57. be trusted!") but not with his own (e.g., his reluctance to discuss
  58. Morden in
  59. <a href="022.html">"Chrysalis."</a>) Vir is gradually becoming more
  60. assertive, more willing to stand up to Londo. Whether this will
  61. cause Londo to respect or trust him more remains to be seen.
  62. <li> The two Drazi leaders were clearly only in charge of the groups on
  63. Babylon 5, as evidenced by the fact that the decision to up the stakes
  64. of the contest came from the Drazi homeworld. What happens if one
  65. group wins in one place and the other wins back home is open to
  66. debate.
  67. <li> Londo's reference to the techno-mages' presence at the founding of the
  68. Republic, and his recognition of the human mages, suggests that the
  69. brotherhood of techno-mages is very old, and crosses species
  70. boundaries. Perhaps they have been around long enough to have
  71. taken part in the great war recorded in the Book of G'Quan (cf.
  72. <a href="024.html">"Revelations"</a>)
  73. and can see signs of the same thing starting again.
  74. <li> The techno-mages seem to have found some technological way to emulate
  75. the prophetic abilities of some of the Centauri, among others (cf.
  76. <a href="013.html">"Signs and Portents."</a>)
  77. Such abilities are arguably related to time travel; perhaps it is
  78. the techno-mages who supply the technology to bring Babylon 4 forward
  79. in time (cf.
  80. <a href="020.html">"Babylon Squared."</a>)
  81. <li> When Garibaldi was playing with his weapon, it's plausible that he
  82. was contemplating suicide. He has hit rock bottom. He has been
  83. betrayed by a trusted member of his own staff and shot in the back. The
  84. only person he really trusted (Commander Sinclair) is gone. And, he is
  85. probably feeling that he was somehow responsible for the failure to
  86. prevent the assassination of the EA President. He is a recovering
  87. alcoholic, and he has lost the woman he had fantasized about marrying.
  88. If true, this lends a different meaning to Sheridan's comment, "The
  89. universe doesn't give us points for doing the easy things."
  90. </ul>
  91. <h2><a name="NO">Notes</a></h2>
  92. <ul>
  93. <li> Ivanova's broken foot in this episode wasn't originally planned;
  94. Claudia Christian broke her foot, and it had to be explained in the
  95. context of the show somehow.
  96. <li> The end credits list Edward Conery as Devereaux (cf.
  97. <a href="022.html">"Chrysalis"</a>)
  98. but he doesn't seem to actually appear in the episode anywhere.
  99. Since he did appear in the previous episode,
  100. <a href="024.html">"Revelations,"</a>
  101. and wasn't listed in its credits, he may have been listed here to make
  102. up for the omission.
  103. <li> Elric's warning to Vir is almost verbatim from Tolkien's <cite>Lord
  104. Of the Rings</cite>, in which Gildor, an elf, tells Frodo (speaking
  105. about Gandalf,) "But it is said: Do not meddle in the affairs of
  106. wizards, for they are subtle and quick to anger."
  107. <li> Elric's name is from Michael Moorcock's series of fantasy novels.
  108. <li> When Garibaldi turns up to rescue
  109. Ivanova, there is a visual gaffe. The Drazi who starts to
  110. get up to answer the door is the one in a red-accented suit
  111. with epaulettes. When Garibaldi is admitted, it is by the
  112. other Drazi, while the one who had started to get up is
  113. guarding Ivanova.
  114. <li> Michael Ansara, who plays Elric, also played Kang, a Klingon, in the
  115. original Star Trek episode "Day of the Dove" and the Deep Space Nine
  116. episode "Blood Oath."
  117. </ul>
  118. <h2><a name="JS">jms speaks</a></h2>
  119. <ul>
  120. <p>
  121. <li> BTW, having now edited seven episodes, and seen several finished ones,
  122. I think that of the first three, "The Geometry of Shadows" (#3) is my
  123. personal favorite. "Revelations" is certainly a biggie, a staggering
  124. chunk of the arc...but "Geometry" is just an absolute hoot, something
  125. of a breather from the intensity, and largely for fun with some
  126. undertones. If you liked "The Parliament of Dreams," you'll probably
  127. love "Geometry."
  128. <p>
  129. <li> There were *substantial* differences made between the first draft
  130. and the final, based on the fact that a lot of the physical stuff I'd
  131. written for Claudia -- getting herself out of the problem she was in
  132. with the Drazi -- had to be dumped because the actress had a broken
  133. foot. So that aspect has to be remembered. We pushed her to the
  134. limits, and I didn't want to push further.
  135. <p>
  136. <li> You hit on the head *precisely*. When Garibaldi was popping the
  137. energy cap in and out of the PPG, he was on the floor, nominally in the
  138. dark, thinking of killing himself. I didn't want to play it up, didn't
  139. want to make it what the story was about...just show him doing it, over
  140. and
  141. over. And from Sheridan's face, seeing the last of this, it's clear he
  142. got it...and I thought he handled the scene *perfectly*, by his whole
  143. demeanor, but NOT talking about it except indirectly.
  144. <p>
  145. <li> If I told you what the 14 words were, they wouldn't mean anything
  146. anymore.
  147. <p>
  148. <li> I don't feel Sheridan was downplaying her promotion; he was sneaking
  149. it up on her to surprise her, making it more of an unexpected delight.
  150. <p>
  151. <li> The idea behind the title "The Geometry of Shadows" was in a sense
  152. a metaphor for the techno-mages; geometry bespeaking the use of math and
  153. equations, the latter being generally something dark, or mysterious, or
  154. mystical.
  155. <p>
  156. <li> "The Geometry of Shadows" seemed to me a good metaphor for the
  157. technomages; a mix of science with something dark and mysterious.
  158. How do you work out the geometry of something that in one sense
  159. doesn't really exist, but is a projection of something else that
  160. DOES exist? That seemed to me as good a notion of technomagic as
  161. anything else.
  162. <p>
  163. <li> Be assured, Vir's position continues to be important, and he moves a
  164. bit closer to the limelight as he does so...remember, he's the one
  165. who has to watch Londo's actions like a man watching an accident in
  166. slow motion, and try to do what he can to stop it.
  167. <p>
  168. <li> Sheridan wasn't talking to himself, but rather to the tech who just
  169. seconds before asked if they should let the techno-mages go. (I'd
  170. trimmed the first part of his speech which made this a little clearer,
  171. figuring it'd be evident who he was talking to. What can I say...
  172. sometimes you get the bear, sometimes the bear gets you.)
  173. <p>
  174. <li> Excuse me, but has *anyone* here considered that Sheridan just might
  175. still be talking to the same tech he was speaking to not *five
  176. seconds earlier*? He wasn't talking to himself, so much, or the
  177. audience, though the push-in (the only shot we had) worked against
  178. that. He *was* talking to the tech. Honest.
  179. <p>
  180. <li> The technomages are from various races and worlds; there are some who
  181. are Centauri, some who are human, even other races such as the Vree
  182. and the pak'ma'ra, though these in particular happened to be from
  183. Earth. (If they were Centauri, why would Sheridan have been
  184. interfering with their emigration?)
  185. <p>
  186. <li> Re: the Drazi...yeah, they all look different in that episode. Our
  187. prosthetics folks did a great job with that, as did the actors, and I
  188. think this one should earn Optic Nerve another emmy.
  189. <p>
  190. <li> And yeah, Garibaldi's "joke" was supposed to be pretty lame; we even
  191. edited it to widen the awkward pause, to make it more difficult. He's
  192. trying too hard, and his spirit isn't in it.
  193. <p>
  194. <li> No, actually, the technomage symbol (all of them, actually, including
  195. the ones on the wall) are all derivations, specifically altered, of old
  196. runes and the like. In some cases, we removed words and inserted
  197. mathematical symbols. The fiery symbol is all one piece, and is also an
  198. old rune.
  199. <p>
  200. <li> Actually, Londo has two coats, a cloak, several different colored
  201. vests (blue, black, others), often wears just his shirt, we've seen
  202. him in his PJs...he's got a fairly large wardrobe.
  203. <p>
  204. <li> Also, Londo looks for the blessings of the technomages the same way
  205. the witches performed that role in "Macbeth." There are other parallels
  206. one might draw as well, though again they're still two different
  207. stories.
  208. <P>
  209. <li>@@@842211102 <em>What happened to the Emperor's son?</em><br>
  210. Ah...a very sad case, that. Turhan's only child, his son, died during a
  211. boating accident, of all things. He drowned. His personal guard, who
  212. was apparently unable to find Turhan's son in the murky water, was found
  213. dead several days after making his report; his own death was officially
  214. ruled a suicide, out of grief. But there are always stories....
  215. <p>
  216. <li> <em>How was it written before Claudia Christian injured her ankle?</em>
  217. <br>
  218. Mainly it was written with Ivanova solving her problem on her own,
  219. without Garibaldi being there.
  220. <p>
  221. <li> <em>Re: Squaring the account of Ivanova's promotion with Comic #1,
  222. "In Darkness Find Me"</em><br>
  223. The president spoke truthfully; Sheridan could petition for a
  224. promotion for her, but it's up to Earthforce to grant it, so the line
  225. still tracks. (Note also there's no pronoun there; "Giving her a
  226. field promotion." The imperial We still stands, though.) Also,
  227. Sheridan says he put through the paperwork the day after he got there;
  228. which is fairly close to the time frame in the story in which the
  229. President says they'll be giving Ivanova a promotion. There's no
  230. discontinuity here.
  231. <p>
  232. <li> Actually, originally, the plan was for President Clark to indeed
  233. notify Ivanova in "Points of Departure," but introducing a new
  234. character in the General added some changes when we shot the scene.
  235. But by then it was too late to modify the comic [#1, "In Darkness
  236. Find Me"].
  237. <p>
  238. Also, in the comic, Clark doesn't *specify* who's giving Ivanova the
  239. promotion, just that it's being done. (And Sheridan comments that he
  240. put through the paperwork the day after he arrived, which tracks with
  241. this time-wise.)
  242. <p>
  243. <li> Ivanova did NOT take the kerchief off either of the Drazi leaders in
  244. the council chambers; she walked PAST them, and signaled for two of
  245. the regular Drazi to come down out of the cheap seats.
  246. <p>
  247. <li> Nope, that really was Claudia walking on her broken foot in the
  248. council chambers. She's a trooper....
  249. <p>
  250. <li> "A race that speaks in macros" referred to the Drazi constantly
  251. repeating their stance, Green must fight Purple, Purple must fight
  252. Green, over and over...macros.
  253. <p>
  254. <li> Ann Bruice did a great job on the technomage costumes; I agree. She
  255. found ways to implement what was described in the script that were
  256. both creative and wore well, and fulfilled the function. I wanted
  257. black, with fine silver lines, and an almost circuitboard look to the
  258. patterns in places, but not *obviously* that, stylized. She took that
  259. and came back with a true niftyness....
  260. <p>
  261. <li> In order to create more involved alien makeups, and because many
  262. actors have a hard time with prosthetics, we created what we call the
  263. Babylon 5 Alien Rep Group; last year about five, and this year about
  264. 12 actors who we have taken full head and (in some cases) body casts,
  265. so we can use them in mid-level speaking roles as aliens and rotate
  266. them in and out. Since we had fewer last year, you saw Mark more than
  267. you'll see him this year. Green Drazi #1 in "Geometry" is one such
  268. rep group alien.
  269. <p>
  270. We keep trying to find interesting solutions to interesting problems.
  271. <p>
  272. <li> The techno-mages were not a homage to ShadowRun games, since I've
  273. never seen the game, and have never heard of it prior to seeing this
  274. message.
  275. <p>
  276. <li> Yes, Ivanova's title in the opening credits *will* be changed to
  277. Commander, to reflect her change in rank. And we'll be adding a rank
  278. for Lt. Keffer. It's kind of funny; we keep treating the opening
  279. title this year as a work in progress, reflecting little changes here
  280. and there...changes in faces, narration, little musical changes that
  281. will come by about episode five or six.....
  282. </ul>
