  62. Subject: 1. Introduction
  63. The Babylon Project was our last, best hope for peace. A self-contained
  64. world five miles long, located in neutral territory. A place of
  65. commerce
  66. and diplomacy for a quarter of a million humans and aliens. A shining
  67. beacon in space, all alone in the night. It was the dawn of the Third
  68. Age
  69. of Mankind...the year the Great War came upon us all. This is the story
  70. of the last of the Babylon stations. The year is 2259. The name of the
  71. place is Babylon 5.
  72. -- Captain Sheridan
  73. ------------------------------
  74. Subject: 2. The Setting of Babylon 5
  75. A hundred years ago, humanity made contact with its first alien civilization
  76. -- or more to the point, they made contact with us. Before the arrival of
  77. the
  78. Centauri, we were confined to our own solar system, forced to use slow
  79. sleeper
  80. ships to explore the universe. The Centauri gave us the stars, offered us
  81. the
  82. use of their "jumpgates" -- portals into hyperspace -- and later, taught us
  83. to
  84. make our own. In exchange for this and other technologies, they asked only
  85. for trinkets, novelties to sell back home.
  86. In the eighty years that followed, humanity flexed its muscles, expanding
  87. outward at a rapid pace. When a group of less powerful races was attacked
  88. by
  89. an invading army, Earth came to their aid, cementing its role as a major
  90. galactic power, if a young, brash one.
  91. The wave of euphoria came crashing down when humanity made contact with a
  92. mysterious race called the Minbari. The Earth-Minbari War began with a
  93. misunderstanding, a human captain and a Minbari commander too quick on the
  94. trigger. Thanks to bad luck or something darker, our first meeting with the
  95. Minbari resulted in the death of their supreme religious and political
  96. leader.
  97. To the Minbari, what followed was a holy war, vengeance for the murder of
  98. their spiritual leader. Earth was no match for the technologically superior
  99. Minbari, and they easily beat us back to our home planet.
  100. Then, without explanation, as their ships closed in on Earth and wiped out
  101. our
  102. last desperate defenses, the Minbari halted their advance and surrendered.
  103. Only an elite few knew why.
  104. The Babylon Project was conceived in the aftermath of the war. Modeled
  105. after
  106. the United Nations, it would be a meeting place, neutral ground where the
  107. powers could meet and work out their differences peacefully.
  108. The first three Babylon stations were sabotaged in mid-construction. The
  109. fourth was completed, but just as it was about to go online, it vanished
  110. without a trace. The Earth government would have stopped there, but some of
  111. the alien governments, seeing the value of a meeting ground, offered
  112. financial
  113. assistance for the construction of a fifth station. Naturally, there were
  114. strings attached.
  115. Babylon 5 is the story of the last of the Babylon stations, the last hope
  116. for
  117. a galaxy without war. It begins in the year 2257 with the opening of the
  118. Babylon 5 station.
  119. + + + + +
  120. Babylon 5's mission appears increasingly hopeless. After nearly two years
  121. of
  122. operation, everything is changing for the worse. Though Babylon 5's mission
  123. of peace continues, war appears to be imminent, and there is a dangerous new
  124. power in the galaxy that few even suspect exists. Amid the heightening
  125. tensions, the complex relationships among the major powers are shifting in
  126. unpredictable ways.
  127. ------------------------------
  128. Subject: 3. The Major Players
  129. ======== a. The Earth Alliance
  130. The Earth Alliance, headquartered in Geneva, is in charge of the station and
  131. the surrounding space. Its president was recently killed in an "accidental"
  132. explosion. His successor seems to be taking the goverment in a sinister
  133. direction. President Clark is connected with the Psi-Corps, an organization
  134. responsible for the tracking and training of human telepaths; increasingly,
  135. though, the Corps appears to be meddling in Earth politics, pursuing its own
  136. agenda. Evidence that the last president's death was not an accident isn't
  137. being taken seriously. Babylon 5's first commander, Sinclair, was abruptly
  138. removed from his post and sent to the Minbari homeworld. The new commander,
  139. Captain Sheridan, has his work cut out for him; keeping the peace has never
  140. been more difficult.
  141. ======== b. The Minbari Federation
  142. An old, highly spiritual race, Minbari are humanoid with exterior bone
  143. crests
  144. on their heads. Once an adversary of Earth, the Minbari Federation has
  145. continued to show interest in and friendship with humanity. Over the past
  146. year, a few have discovered why: the Minbari religious caste believes that
  147. some humans are carrying reincarnated Minbari souls, a discovery made by the
  148. Minbari ruling body, the Grey Council, on the brink of victory over Earth
  149. eleven years earlier. The abrupt cessation of the Earth-Minbari War was a
  150. direct result; Minbari have a strict moral code against killing others of
  151. their kind. Some in the religious caste also believe in a prophecy of their
  152. original spiritual leader, Valen, that the Minbari must unite with another
  153. race to defeat an ancient enemy.
  154. ======== c. The Centauri Republic
  155. The Centauri Republic, long considered a fading empire, seems to be on the
  156. upswing, thanks to a deal that Ambassador Londo Mollari struck with a
  157. mysterious race he knows next to nothing about. In terms of appearance,
  158. Centauri appear human at first glance, though that's deceptive. Women shave
  159. their heads; men wear their hair in fans, with length indicating social
  160. standing. The Republic is rife with political intrigue and backstabbing.
  161. ======== d. The Narn Regime
  162. Among those formerly under Centauri domination are the Narn, a
  163. reptilian-looking race who fought off their oppressors in a century-long war
  164. of attrition. The Narn Regime has been building up its military, and it
  165. looks
  166. like that preparation may pay off, as the Centauri have gotten aggressive
  167. again and there may be more conflict ahead. Only Narn Ambassador G'Kar
  168. believes that somebody else is responsible for the Centauri's military
  169. flexing
  170. and that more races than the Narn are in danger.
  171. ======== e. The Vorlon Empire
  172. Even though the Vorlon Empire has had a representative on Babylon 5 for a
  173. year
  174. and a half, almost nothing is known about their race; even their appearance
  175. is
  176. shrouded in mystery as their Ambassador, Kosh, is only seen in a bulky
  177. encounter suit. Kosh seems to be taking an interest in Captain Sheridan,
  178. but
  179. his interest in humans is still shrouded in mystery. The Vorlons are an
  180. extremely powerful race; no expedition into their space has been heard from
  181. again. There seems to be some history between the Vorlons and the Minbari,
  182. but neither one is willing to say what it is.
  183. ======== f. The Shadows
  184. The Shadows are a strong and dark power who are clearly not interested in
  185. being discovered. Only those who pay attention to prophecies suspect they
  186. may
  187. have returned after a centuries-long absence. Through their human agent
  188. Morden they have offered to help Londo restore the Centauri Empire's
  189. glory...
  190. but clearly that's only one step in their larger plans.
  191. ------------------------------
  192. Subject: 4. The Characters
  193. ======== a. Main Cast (appearing in most episodes throughout the season)
  194. i. Humans
  195. CAPTAIN JOHN SHERIDAN Bruce Boxleitner
  196. The commander of Babylon 5 and representative of the Earth Alliance. One of
  197. the few heroes of the Earth-Minbari War, Sheridan scored Earth's only major
  198. victory of the war, something which has earned him the hatred of the Minbari
  199. warrior caste. Charismatic, quick-thinking, and occasionally serious,
  200. Sheridan was hand-picked by the President to replace Sinclair. Sheridan is
  201. still recovering from the loss of his wife Anna, who died on an alien
  202. archaeological dig. Most of his career has been spent aboard starships;
  203. he's
  204. still in the process of getting used to being the head of what is
  205. essentially
  206. a small city in space. Sheridan and Ivanova have served together in the
  207. past.
  208. COMMANDER SUSAN IVANOVA Claudia Christian
  209. Second in command and in charge of the day-to-day operations of Babylon 5,
  210. Ivanova is an ambitious career officer. She can be quirky or pessimistic at
  211. times, but she has a dry sense of humor that shows itself in the rare
  212. moments
  213. she is able to relax among others. Born in St. Petersburg, Russia, and
  214. raised
  215. abroad on Earth, she has a strong dislike for the Psi-Corps, whose
  216. legally-mandated drug treatments drove her mother to suicide after it was
  217. discovered her mother was a latent telepath. Although she has become more
  218. comfortable with her job and her role on Babylon 5, she has a tendency to
  219. bury
  220. herself in her work. Her promotion to Commander has given her new
  221. ambassadorial duties, which she finds extremely challenging.
  222. SECURITY CHIEF MICHAEL ALFREDO GARIBALDI Jerry Doyle
  223. In charge of security on Babylon 5. He has a troubled past, bouncing from
  224. position to position and trying to overcome alcoholism. He was picked by
  225. the
  226. station's first commander, Sinclair, who knew that Garibaldi would be
  227. persistent, not willing to give in to political pressures -- in Sinclair's
  228. words, "a pain in the ass." Garibaldi is something of a smart-aleck, always
  229. ready to crack a joke, but given to bouts of self-doubt and introspection
  230. when
  231. nobody's looking. His natural sense of paranoia wasn't reduced when he was
  232. shot in the back by his own second-in-command while he was investigating the
  233. death of President Santiago; he recovered, but is now convinced that
  234. something
  235. is dreadfully wrong at the heart of the Earth Alliance. His rank is "Chief
  236. Warrant Officer."
  237. DR. STEPHEN FRANKLIN Richard Biggs
  238. Dedicated and assured, a specialist in xenobiology (alien biology,) and in
  239. charge of Medlab on Babylon 5. His background is mainly in experimental
  240. medicine, so his bedside manner is occasionally not what it should be. His
  241. strong sense of personal morality is at times in conflict with his duties as
  242. the chief medical provider for aliens from hundreds of worlds and cultures,
  243. some of whom view his obligations rather differently. Often bordering on
  244. the
  245. obsessive and overworking himself frequently, Dr. Franklin is known to
  246. operate
  247. outside the rules when he feel the issue is important: he runs a free clinic
  248. in the Downbelow section for those who cannot afford medical care; he also
  249. serves on an "underground railroad" for telepaths who do not want to be
  250. found
  251. by the Psi Corps. In his middle thirties now, he spent years hitchhiking
  252. through space, offering his doctoral services in exchange for the
  253. opportunity
  254. to examine new life forms.
  255. TALIA WINTERS Andrea Thompson
  256. Babylon 5's resident telepath, on her first solo assignment, with level 5
  257. psi
  258. rating, bound by the rules and regulations of the Psi Corps. She sells her
  259. telepathic services to businessmen and occasionally assists the station
  260. personnel. Talia was raised and trained by the Psi Corps, meaning that that
  261. organization is her family. Last year, she was visited by an old teacher
  262. who
  263. had undergone a Psi Corps experiment. He altered her, giving her
  264. telekinetic
  265. abilities and possibly other powers as well. He also warned her of the
  266. changing nature of the Corps; she is now not entirely sure she trusts its
  267. motives.
  268. ii. Ambassadors
  269. AMBASSADOR LONDO MOLLARI Peter Jurasik
  270. The representative of the Centauri Republic. Londo views Babylon 5's
  271. mission
  272. as something of a sham, with limited chance of helping his people regain
  273. their
  274. lost glory and sense of purpose. He has a biting, cynical sense of humor.
  275. Without realizing it at first, Londo has struck a bargain with the Shadows,
  276. who are working to advance his career and restore the Centauri to their past
  277. splendor, asking in return only the granting of an unspecified "favor" at
  278. some
  279. point in the future. It is a bargain he is already beginning to regret, but
  280. the restoration of his people means so much to him that he feels it's worth
  281. the price.
  282. AMBASSADOR DELENN Mira Furlan
  283. Represents the Minbari. A member of the Minbari ruling body, the Grey
  284. Council, she came to Babylon 5 posing as a simple ambassador to study humans
  285. after the discovery that some of them carry Minbari souls. She was offered
  286. the leadership of the Council but turned it down, instead returning to
  287. Babylon
  288. 5 to play a role in a prophecy involving a struggle between darkness and
  289. light. Once back, after consulting with the Vorlon ambassador, she used a
  290. mysterious device to transform herself into a bizarre half-Minbari,
  291. half-human
  292. hybrid. She claims she undertook the change to act as a bridge of
  293. understanding between humans and Minbari; whether that's the real reason or
  294. not, only she knows.
  295. AMBASSADOR G'KAR Andreas Katsulas
  296. Represents the Narn Regime. Though ambitious and often antagonistic, G'Kar
  297. is
  298. extremely spiritual, and his knowledge of ancient scripture has led him to
  299. realize that an ancient race has come back to help the Centauri rebuild
  300. their
  301. empire. He has even survived an encounter with the shadows, but none in his
  302. own government or the Babylon 5 council admit to believing him. G'Kar is
  303. well-read, deeply spiritual, and extremely intelligent.
  304. AMBASSADOR KOSH NARANEK Ardwight Chamberlain
  305. (translation)
  306. Chris Franke (voice effects)
  307. Jeffrey Willerth (in the suit)
  308. and animatronics
  309. After a year and a half on the station, Kosh and his people are still an
  310. enigma, and Kosh seems to prefer it that way. With the coming of the
  311. Shadows
  312. -- Kosh is one of the few who seem to know about them -- he has started
  313. attending council meetings, though his reasons for coming to Babylon 5 are
  314. still unknown. Kosh communicates through a complex sequence of musical
  315. tones,
  316. translated into English by a device on his encounter suit. When he speaks,
  317. his words are few and sound cryptic, but often have a strange truth to them.
  318. Kosh's quarters are filled with a dense atmosphere of methane and other
  319. gases;
  320. whether he needs it or is using it to make himself less accessible is an
  321. open
  322. question. Even when he's receiving visitors there, Kosh wears his suit.
  323. ======== b. Supporting Characters (also in the opening credits)
  324. iii. Ambassador assistants
  325. LENNIER Bill Mumy
  326. Delenn's aide, recently of a monastery on the Minbari homeworld. He reveres
  327. Delenn as an almost holy figure and accepts her transformation without
  328. question. Still something of an innocent thanks to his isolated upbringing,
  329. Lennier is slowly learning the ways of diplomacy. First appears in "The
  330. Parliament of Dreams."
  331. VIR COTTO Stephen Furst
  332. Diplomatic Attache to Ambassador to Londo. Generally timid and unsure of
  333. himself, Vir occasionally works up the nerve to confront Londo about the
  334. dangerous path he's following by dealing with Morden.
  335. NA'TOTH Mary Kay Adams
  336. A female Narn, assistant to G'Kar. She is one of the few whom he's told
  337. about
  338. his discovery that an ancient enemy is on the move. Fiercely loyal to
  339. G'Kar,
  340. she prefers the direct approach rather than G'Kar's subterfuge and
  341. deception.
  342. iv. Humans
  343. LIEUTENANT WARREN KEFFER Robert Russler
  344. Head of Zeta Squadron, the newest of Babylon 5's fighter wings. Keffer
  345. leads
  346. many of the excursions away from the station, when the presence of a
  347. command-level officer isn't required. Keffer's family is back on Earth.
  348. First appears in "Points of Departure."
  349. ======== c. Recurring and Past Characters
  350. +-----------------------------------+
  351. | This section lists characters |
  352. | that are seen from time to time |
  353. | on Babylon 5. Characters that |
  354. | have appeared in the past, and |

  356. | current season, are listed here |
  357. | as well, to provide context. |
  358. +-----------------------------------+
  359. AMBASSADOR JEFFREY DAVID SINCLAIR Michael O'Hare
  360. The commander of Babylon 5 and representative of the Earth Alliance for its
  361. first two years of operation. Shortly after the death of President
  362. Santiago,
  363. Sinclair was recalled to Earth and assigned to a new post, as the first
  364. human
  365. ambassador to the Minbari (cf. comic "In Darkness Find Me.") He had been
  366. named
  367. commander of Babylon 5 at the insistence of the Minbari, who captured him
  368. during the Battle of the Line and scanned him. Delenn is certain Sinclair
  369. has
  370. an important destiny (cf. "Soul Hunter," "A Voice in the Wilderness, part
  371. 2.")
  372. This is borne out by the brief glimpse into the future in "Babylon Squared,"
  373. in which he was the leader of an army of light fighting in a great war.
  374. PRESIDENT WILLIAM MORGAN CLARK Gary McGurk
  375. When President Santiago was killed in an "accidental" explosion, Clark took
  376. office and immediately began his own agenda. He personally assigned
  377. Sheridan
  378. to his position, unaware of Sheridan's interest in fighting the mounting
  379. corruption in Earth government. Not much of an advocate of Babylon 5's
  380. interests. First appears in "Chrysalis."
  381. ALFRED BESTER Walter Koenig
  382. A Psi-Cop, one of an elite unit of the Psi Corps whose function is to track
  383. down rogue telepaths, among other things. Perhaps in part because of his
  384. P12
  385. psi rating -- more than twice as high as Talia's -- he seems to have risen
  386. to
  387. a position of some importance in the Corps. Bester ruthlessly pursues his
  388. agenda, which most of the time is the same as the Corps'. First appears in
  389. "Mind War."
  390. MORDEN Ed Wasser
  391. Little is known about the human agent of the Shadows. He is able to
  392. communicate with them directly, and is one of the few who know they've been
  393. on
  394. Babylon 5. Never a major player, he is always ready to talk to Londo and
  395. pass
  396. messages to and from his "associates." Delenn and G'Kar have met him, but
  397. only Delenn has any idea who he is. Morden is meticulously polite, but
  398. nonetheless is a menacing presence who can casually discuss the deaths of
  399. tens
  400. of thousands of Narn as easily as most people talk about the weather. First
  401. appears in "Signs and Portents."
  402. JACK Macaulay Bruton
  403. Garibaldi's seemingly naive and loyal assistant until he shot him in the
  404. back
  405. on New Year's Eve when Garibaldi discovered a conspiracy to assassinate
  406. President Santiago. Garibaldi identified him as his assailant, but he
  407. disappeared while being transferred to earth for prosecution. Possibly
  408. associated with the Psi Corps. First appears in "Mind War."
  409. LOU WELCH David Crowley
  410. One of Garibaldi's lieutenants. First appears in "Survivors."
  411. ZACK ALLAN Jeff Conaway
  412. One of Garibaldi's lieutenants, Zack is earnest and trustworthy, if not
  413. necessarily the brightest person on the station. After the arrest of
  414. Garibaldi's old aide for attempted murder (cf. "Revelations,") Zack has
  415. risen
  416. to a new level of importance in Garibaldi's staff. First appears in "A
  417. Spider
  418. in the Web."
  419. LORD REFA William Forward
  420. A ruthless, unprincipled Centauri noble with whom Londo is cooperating in a
  421. bid for power. First appears in "The Geometry of Shadows."
  422. LYTA ALEXANDER Patricia Tallman
  423. Babylon 5's first commercial telepath, rating P5, in her early thirties or
  424. late twenties. She was transferred off the station shortly after examining
  425. Kosh, presumably due to her newfound knowledge of the Vorlons. First
  426. appears
  427. in "The Gathering."
  428. DRAAL John Schuck
  429. The steward of the vast machinery below on Epsilon 3. He is a Minbari who
  430. was
  431. looking for a new purpose in life when he heeded the call to replace the
  432. caretaker of the planet, immediately declaring it off-limits to all until
  433. the

  444. The first season, titled "Signs and Portents," introduced the players and
  445. plot
  446. elements of the five-year saga. The Psi Corps is shown to have a very
  447. strong
  448. control of the government back home. Commander Sinclair's involvement in
  449. the
  450. sudden Minbari surrender in their war with Earth ten years before is
  451. partially
  452. explained, and it is clear that Delenn is more than just an ambassador on
  453. Babylon 5. A strange man named Morden does a favor for Londo Mollari, who
  454. doesn't realize how dearly he will pay for that favor. The planet under
  455. Babylon 5 turns out not to be lifeless, but its caretaker does not want any
  456. visitors. Babylon 5's predecessor, Babylon 4, which had mysteriously
  457. dissapeared just after going online, appears again, and is being yanked
  458. through time to serve as a military base for a war in another time; a much
  459. older Sinclair seems to be involved in that war. Finally, on New Year's Eve
  460. of 2258, Delenn, acting on a prophecy, builds a device which produces a
  461. physical transformation for her; the Earth Alliance president is
  462. assassinated
  463. and it appears that the political climate back home is getting worse; and
  464. Londo calls upon his new friend and his mysterious associates to wipe out a
  465. Narn base which will plummet the Centauri and Narn into war.
