  60. Subject: 1. Introduction
  61. It was the dawn of the third age of mankind, ten years after the Earth/
  62. Minbari war. The Babylon Project was a dream given form. Its goal: to
  63. prevent another war by creating a place where humans and aliens could
  64. work
  65. out their differences peacefully. It's a port of call - home away from
  66. home for diplomats, hustlers, entrepreneurs, and wanderers. Humans and
  67. aliens wrapped in two million, five hundred thousand tons of spinning
  68. metal, all alone in the night. It can be a dangerous place, but it's
  69. our
  70. last best hope for peace. This is the story of the last of the Babylon
  71. stations. The year is 2258. The name of the place is Babylon 5.
  72. -- Commander Sinclair
  73. #### Narration from the Pilot movie, "The Gathering":
  74. I was there at the dawn of the third age of mankind. It began in the
  75. Earth year 2257 with the founding of the last of the Babylon stations,
  76. located deep in neutral space. It was a port of call for refugees,
  77. smugglers, businessmen, diplomats and travellers from a hundred worlds.
  78. It could be a dangerous place, but we accepted the risks because Babylon
  79. 5
  80. was our last, best hope for peace. Under the leadership of its final
  81. commander, Babylon 5 was a dream given form. A dream of a galaxy
  82. without
  83. war, and species of different worlds could live, side by side in mutual
  84. respect. A dream that was in danger as never before, by the arrival of
  85. one man on a mission of destruction. Babylon 5 was the last of the
  86. Babylon stations. This is its story.
  87. -- Centauri Ambassador Londo Mollari
  88. ------------------------------
  89. Subject: 2. The Setting of Babylon 5
  90. A hundred years ago, humanity made contact with its first alien civilization
  91. -- or more to the point, they made contact with us. Before the arrival of
  92. the
  93. Centauri, we were confined to our own solar system, forced to use slow
  94. sleeper
  95. ships to explore the universe. The Centauri gave us the stars, offered us
  96. the
  97. use of their "jumpgates" -- portals into hyperspace -- and later, taught us
  98. to
  99. make our own. In exchange for this and other technologies, they asked only
  100. for trinkets, novelties to sell back home.
  101. In the eighty years that followed, humanity flexed its muscles, expanding
  102. outward at a rapid pace. When a group of less powerful races was attacked
  103. by
  104. an invading army, Earth came to their aid, cementing its role as a major
  105. galactic power, if a young, brash one.
  106. The wave of euphoria came crashing down when humanity made contact with a
  107. mysterious race called the Minbari. The Earth-Minbari War began with a
  108. misunderstanding, a human captain and a Minbari commander too quick on the
  109. trigger. Thanks to bad luck or something darker, our first meeting with the
  110. Minbari resulted in the death of their supreme religious and political
  111. leader.
  112. To the Minbari, what followed was a holy war, vengeance for the murder of
  113. their spiritual leader. Earth was no match for the technologically superior
  114. Minbari, and they easily beat us back to our home planet.
  115. Then, without explanation, as their ships closed in on Earth and wiped out
  116. our
  117. last desperate defenses, the Minbari halted their advance and surrendered.
  118. Only an elite few knew why.
  119. The Babylon Project was conceived in the aftermath of the war. Modeled
  120. after
  121. the United Nations, it would be a meeting place, neutral ground where the
  122. powers could meet and work out their differences peacefully.
  123. The first three Babylon stations were sabotaged in mid-construction. The
  124. fourth was completed, but just as it was about to go online, it vanished
  125. without a trace. The Earth government would have stopped there, but some of
  126. the alien governments, seeing the value of a meeting ground, offered
  127. financial
  128. assistance for the construction of a fifth station. Naturally, there were
  129. strings attached.
  130. Babylon 5 is the story of the last of the Babylon stations, the last hope
  131. for
  132. a galaxy without war. It begins in the year 2257 with the opening of the
  133. Babylon 5 station.
  134. + + + + +
  135. Season 1 opens almost a year after the station went on-line. Things have
  136. functioned surprisingly smoothly, considering the fate of the station's
  137. predecessors.
  138. ------------------------------
  139. Subject: 3. The Major Players
  140. ======== a. The Earth Alliance
  141. The Earth Alliance, headquartered in Geneva, is in charge of the station and
  142. the surrounding space. It is led by President Luis Santiago, a
  143. forward-looking politician who values Earth's participation in Babylon 5
  144. tremendously. Of special note is a branch of the Earth government called
  145. Psi-Corps, responsible for the tracking and training of human telepaths.
  146. The
  147. EA appointed Commander Jeffrey Sinclair to command Babylon 5, although the
  148. installation of such a low-ranked officer made more than a few people upset.
  149. ======== b. The Minbari Federation
  150. Earth's former adversary, the Minbari Federation, was the major alien
  151. contributor to the construction of Babylon 5. An old, highly spiritual
  152. race,
  153. Minbari are humanoid with exterior bone crests on their heads. The Minbari
  154. are ruled by a body known as the Grey Council, three members from each of
  155. the
  156. three castes of Minbari society. The reason behind the sudden Minbari
  157. surrender at the climax of the Earth-Minbari War is a closely guarded
  158. secret,
  159. but what isn't a secret is that the warrior caste was none too pleased about
  160. the order; even today, it is a source of tension within Minbari society.
  161. ======== c. The Centauri Republic
  162. The Centauri were the first aliens encountered by humanity. Physically,
  163. they
  164. look nearly identical to humans, and in fact the Centauri initially claimed
  165. that Earth was a lost colony (a claim they later retracted after humans
  166. discovered that the similarities weren't so great after all.) Centauri
  167. women
  168. are bald; men wear their hair in peacock-style fans whose length indicates
  169. the
  170. wearer's social standing. The Centauri Republic is a fading empire, slowly
  171. losing control of its member worlds, a decline much like that of the British
  172. Empire.
  173. ======== d. The Narn Regime
  174. Among those formerly under Centauri domination are the Narn, a
  175. reptilian-looking race who fought off their oppressors in a century-long war
  176. of attrition. Now the Narn Regime is building its military up, trying to
  177. settle the score through an aggressive expansionist policy. Most Narn would
  178. like nothing better than to see the Centauri wiped from the face of the
  179. universe, and from all appearances, they'll shortly be in a position to get
  180. their wish.
  181. ======== e. The Vorlon Empire
  182. The final major government represented on Babylon 5 is the Vorlon Empire.
  183. The
  184. Vorlons are shrouded in mystery. Even though their ambassador is on the
  185. station, nobody knows what they look like; they dress in bulky encounter
  186. suits. Whether the suits are there to keep a noxious atmosphere in or
  187. prying
  188. eyes out is a matter of some debate. The Vorlons are an extremely powerful
  189. race; no expedition into their space has been heard from again. They seem
  190. to
  191. have had dealings with the Minbari in the past, though neither the Minbari
  192. nor
  193. the Vorlons care to discuss the matter.
  194. ======== f. The League of Non-Aligned Worlds
  195. Each of the five races has an ambassador on the Babylon 5 Advisory Council,
  196. something like the UN Security Council. In addition, a number of smaller
  197. governments are members of the League of Non-Aligned Worlds, which is also
  198. represented on the Council. This group is generally sympathetic to Earth,
  199. largely because Earth stepped in to save many of them from invasion by a
  200. hostile race (now extinct) twenty years ago.
  201. ------------------------------
  202. Subject: 4. The Characters
  203. ======== a. Main Cast (appearing in most episodes throughout the season)
  204. i. Humans
  205. COMMANDER JEFFREY DAVID SINCLAIR Michael O'Hare
  206. The commander of Babylon 5 and representative of the Earth Alliance. A
  207. survivor of the climactic Battle of the Line at the end of the Earth-Minbari
  208. War, Sinclair sometimes yearns for his days as a hotshot fighter pilot, and
  209. partially for that reason, he's given to taking unnecessary personal risks.
  210. He's uncomfortable in his position and in fact isn't entirely sure why he
  211. was
  212. given command of such a major post and made a high-level diplomat; his stiff
  213. demeanor is perhaps due to a fear that he isn't up to the job he's been
  214. given.
  215. He is also haunted by suspicions that something happened to him during a
  216. 24-hour blackout during the final moments of the Earth-Minbari war.
  217. Sinclair
  218. was born on Mars Colony and is 39 years old.
  219. LT. COMMANDER SUSAN IVANOVA Claudia Christian
  220. Second in command and in charge of the day-to-day operations of Babylon 5,
  221. Ivanova is an ambitious career officer. She can be quirky or pessimistic at
  222. times, but she has a dry sense of humor that shows itself in the rare
  223. moments
  224. she is able to relax among others. Born in St. Petersburg, Russia, and
  225. raised
  226. abroad on Earth, she has a strong dislike for the Psi-Corps, whose
  227. legally-mandated drug treatments drove her mother to suicide after it was
  228. discovered her mother was a latent telepath. She is new on the station and
  229. often buries herself in her work; her friends are few and her family is all
  230. but gone.
  231. SECURITY CHIEF MICHAEL ALFREDO GARIBALDI Jerry Doyle
  232. In charge of security on Babylon 5. He has a troubled past, bouncing from
  233. position to position and trying to overcome alcoholism. He was picked by
  234. Sinclair for the job; the two worked together in the past. Sinclair knew
  235. that
  236. Garibaldi would be persistent, not willing to give in to political pressures
  237. -- in Sinclair's words, "a pain in the ass." Garibaldi is something of a
  238. smart-aleck, always ready to crack a joke, but given to bouts of self-doubt
  239. and introspection when nobody's looking. His rank is "Chief Warrant
  240. Officer."
  241. DR. STEPHEN FRANKLIN Richard Biggs
  242. Dedicated and assured, a specialist in xenobiology (alien biology,) and in
  243. charge of Medlab on Babylon 5. His background is mainly in experimental
  244. medicine, so his bedside manner is occasionally not what it should be. His
  245. strong sense of personal morality is at times in conflict with his duties as
  246. the chief medical provider for aliens from hundreds of worlds and cultures,
  247. some of whom view his obligations rather differently. In his middle
  248. thirties
  249. now, he spent years hitchhiking through space, offering his doctoral
  250. services
  251. in exchange for the opportunity to examine new life forms.
  252. TALIA WINTERS Andrea Thompson
  253. Babylon 5's resident telepath, on her first solo assignment, with level 5
  254. psi
  255. rating, bound by the rules and regulations of the Psi Corps. She sells her
  256. telepathic services to businessmen, and occasionally assists Sinclair in
  257. negotiations. Talia was raised and trained by the Psi Corps, meaning that
  258. that organization is her family.
  259. ii. Ambassadors
  260. AMBASSADOR LONDO MOLLARI Peter Jurasik
  261. The representative of the Centauri Republic. Londo views Babylon 5's
  262. mission
  263. as something of a sham, with limited chance of helping his people regain
  264. their
  265. lost glory and sense of purpose. His assignment on Babylon 5 is not
  266. considered an important position, in spite of the high status that his
  267. regalia
  268. and high-standing hair would indicate. A war hero in his younger days, he
  269. has
  270. since grown decadent and indulgent. Londo can often be found in one of the
  271. station's bars or casinos, drinking himself to oblivion. He has a biting,
  272. cynical sense of humor. Perhaps his only real friend is Garibaldi, who
  273. understands something of what Londo has been through.
  274. AMBASSADOR DELENN Mira Furlan
  275. Represents the Minbari Federation. Delenn is a member of the highest
  276. Minbari
  277. governmental body, the Grey Council, and why she's masquerading as a lowly
  278. ambassador is one of the ongoing mysteries of Babylon 5. A member of the
  279. religious caste, Delenn's belief in fate and destiny is often evident. She
  280. is
  281. fascinated by humans and tries to learn all about them; some say she is
  282. suspiciously watchful of Commander Sinclair.
  283. AMBASSADOR G'KAR Andreas Katsulas
  284. The representative of the Narn Regime rose to his position in part thanks to
  285. his wife's renown as a hero of the revolutionary war against the Centauri,
  286. but
  287. his own ambition and ability are more than equal to the job. G'Kar will
  288. waste
  289. no opportunity to turn a situation to the Narns' advantage, even if it means
  290. antagonizing everyone else on the station. He takes pride in his position
  291. and
  292. himself, a pride perhaps bordering on arrogance at times. G'Kar would like
  293. nothing better than to see the Centauri, and Londo in particular, pay dearly
  294. for their brutal occupation of Narn.
  295. AMBASSADOR KOSH NARANEK Ardwight Chamberlain
  296. (translation)
  297. Chris Franke (voice effects)
  298. Jeffrey Willerth (in the suit)
  299. and animatronics
  300. Even less is known about Ambassador Kosh than about his race. He arrived on
  301. the station in 2257 and was promptly the victim of a complex assassination
  302. plot involving the Minbari and others. He is rarely seen in council
  303. meetings,
  304. claiming that "we take no interest in the affairs of others," and Vorlons'
  305. reasons for coming to Babylon 5 at all are unknown. Kosh communicates
  306. through
  307. a complex sequence of musical tones, translated into English by a device on
  308. his encounter suit. When he speaks, his words are few and sound cryptic,
  309. but
  310. often have a strange truth to them. Kosh's quarters are filled with a dense
  311. atmosphere of methane and other gases; whether he needs it or is using it to
  312. make himself less accessible is an open question. Even when he's receiving
  313. visitors there, Kosh wears his suit.
  314. ======== b. Supporting Characters (also in the opening credits)
  315. iii. Ambassador assistants
  316. LENNIER Bill Mumy
  317. Delenn's aide, fresh out of a monastery on the Minbari homeworld. He's
  318. something of an innocent abroad, perhaps the one person on Babylon 5 without
  319. a
  320. hidden agenda or a knife waiting to stab someone in the back. He reveres
  321. Delenn, whom only he knows of her high stature back home; to him she's a
  322. holy
  323. figure. First appears in "The Parliament of Dreams."
  324. VIR COTTO Stephen Furst
  325. Diplomatic Attache to Ambassador Londo. Timid, unsure of himself, at times
  326. he
  327. seems little more than someone for Londo to throw things at. However, he is
  328. the only one to know what Londo is going through as difficult times
  329. approach.
  330. NA'TOTH Caitlin Brown
  331. A female Narn, assistant to G'Kar. Though she appeared on the scene in
  332. somewhat dubious circumstances, she is fiercely loyal to G'Kar. She prefers
  333. the direct approach rather than G'Kar's subterfuge and deception. First
  334. appears in "The Parliament of Dreams."
  335. ======== c. Recurring and Past Characters
  336. +-----------------------------------+
  337. | This section lists characters |
  338. | that are seen from time to time |

  344. | This includes characters from |
  345. | the pilot that are no longer on |
  346. | the series. |
  347. +-----------------------------------+
  348. ALFRED BESTER Walter Koenig
  349. A Psi-Cop, one of an elite unit of the Psi Corps whose function is to track
  350. down rogue telepaths, among other things. Perhaps in part because of his
  351. P12
  352. psi rating -- more than twice as high as Talia's -- he seems to have risen
  353. to
  354. a position of some importance in the Corps. Bester ruthlessly pursues his
  355. agenda, which most of the time is the same as the Corps'. First appears in
  356. "Mind War."
  357. MORDEN Ed Wasser
  358. A human who spent a while on the rim, and seems to have made contact with
  359. the
  360. mysterious race, known only as the shadows. His aid to Londo has put the
  361. ambassador in a difficult situation. First appears in "Signs and Portents."
  362. CATHERINE SAKAI Julia Nickson
  363. She works for an Earth company that surveys asteroids and planets for
  364. mineral
  365. exploitation. Runs the survey ship Skydancer. She and Sinclair have had an
  366. on-again, off-again romantic relationship over the past decade. First
  367. appears
  368. in "The Parliament of Dreams."
  369. JACK Macaulay Bruton
  370. Garibaldi's assistant, whom Garibaldi has taken under his wing. Friendly,
  371. and
  372. seems a bit naive. First appears in "Mind War."
  373. LOU WELCH David Crowley
  374. One of Garibaldi's lieutenants. First appears in "Survivors."
  375. N'GRATH (animatronics)
  376. An insect-like non-humanoid alien, a sort of underworld boss, who can
  377. arrange
  378. or fix things for a price. First appears in "Soul Hunter."
  379. SENATOR HIDOSHI Aki Aleong
  380. A member of the Senate committee overseeing Babylon 5. Senator Hidoshi is
  381. often the one to deliver unpleasant government orders to Sinclair, though he
  382. seems personally to agree with Sinclair much of the time. First appears in
  383. "Deathwalker."
  384. LYTA ALEXANDER Patricia Tallman
  385. Babylon 5's first commercial telepath, rating P5, in her early thirties or
  386. late twenties. She was transferred off the station shortly after examining
  387. Kosh, presumably due to her newfound knowledge of the Vorlons. First
  388. appears
  389. in "The Gathering."
  390. LAUREL TAKASHIMA Tamilyn Tomita
  391. Originally the second in command of Babylon 5 (cf "The Gathering"),
  392. Takashima
  393. was reassigned, and has not been heard from since. She was raised on Earth,
  394. and had worked with Sinclair on Mars.
  395. CAROLYN SYKES Blaire Baron
  396. Sinclair's former romantic interest; she owned a trader ship that passed
  397. through Babylon 5 from time to time. She left Sinclair because he wasn't
  398. willing to give up his command to travel with her.
  399. DR. BENJAMIN KYLE Johnny Sekka
  400. Formerly Babylon 5's chief physician and xenobiologist. African, in his
  401. fifties, with a subtle sense of humor. After treating -- and seeing --
  402. Ambassador Kosh, he was recalled to Earthdome.

  411. Season one opens after the station has been operational after nearly a year,
  412. much longer than the odds would have predicted. In "The Gathering" (the
  413. pilot
  414. movie), Ambassador Kosh, the last ambassador to arrive, was poisoned
  415. immediately upon arrival. Sinclair was framed by a radical member of the
  416. Minbari warrior caste. In saving Kosh, B5's doctor and resident telepath
  417. saw
  418. Kosh under his encounter suit; they were transferred back to Earth shortly
  419. afterward. Babylon 5's second in command, Takashima, was replaced by Lt.
  420. Commander Ivanova.
