  189. Well, well...I've been getting some very interesting information on
  190. our friend Ford A. Thaxton, who is involved with a little enterprise
  191. called Silva Screen Records. Perhaps Mr. Thaxton wouldn't mind discussing
  192. some of *his* personal business, like how why he has been using
  193. Christopher Franke's music in his released (remixed) without paying
  194. Chris any royalties...? Apparently he has some real business problems
  195. with Chris, and I would think he has considerable motivation to smear
  196. anything that Chris is involved with. Didn't mention that li'l old
  197. conflict of interest in your quest for the "truth," did old Ford.
  198. And some of the things recently conveyed to me by some who've worked
  199. with, and for Ford, in HIS business practices, are quite illuminating, to
  200. say the least. But I suppose he would think that was a private matter,
  201. not to be discussed on a network.
  202. Maybe I should go and contact Edgar Froese in Germany, and ask about

  212. Next week, in "Revelations," you get G'Kar, Londo, Delenn, Lennier,
  213. Na'Toth, Kosh, Garibaldi, Talia and everybody else. Because there was SO
  214. much happening in #1, that got slid back a bit; also, there's a fair
  215. amount of time required for everything to do what they're supposed to be
  216. doing. (Note that we're operating pretty much in real-time; "Points" is
  217. around 8 days after the events of "Chrysalis," and "Revelations" is about
  218. another week after that.)
  219. One thing I noted here some time ago, as a large part of the reason
  220. I dropped "to be continued" from "Chrysalis" is that this is more of a
  221. three-parter than a two, and some threads pulled in "Chrysalis" won't be
  222. fully resolved in some ways until the third and fourth episodes. There is
  223. a LOT going on, and if we try to cram it all into one episode (as I at
  224. first tried with "Chrysalis, Part Two") you don't give ANY of them the
  225. proper time to have any impact.
  226. Finally, we're getting new people sampling the first episode of the
  227. season, as is true of most shows. Thus, you have to put into dialogue a
  228. fair amount of stuff that otherwise you could just imply or rely on past
  229. experience/prior knowledge. So you kind of introduce the newbies to the
  230. situation, and that requires a fair amount of exposition. This is pretty
  231. much localized to "Points," however; with the next episode, we're up to
  232. full speed. Episode 2 deals with as many issues/plotlines as "Chrysalis,"
  233. with the main difference being that here, they're *resolved* rather than
  234. left hanging.

  390. at some point tuned out of, or aren't interested in, literature and
  391. poetry because they've never really been exposed to it. So just to be a
  392. little subversive, I work some of it into the show. I choose that which
  393. has meaning to the show, and the characters, in the hopes that (as has
  394. happened here), viewers will dig out the original material and be exposed

  403. The fact that Minbari believe in souls does not make it so.
  404. If a story is rigorously SF, but some of the people who inhabit the
  405. story have belief systems, does that automatically invalidate it as SF?
  406. I don't think it's the position of this show to state whether or not
  407. a belief system is true but rather to explore the actions of those who
  408. THINK it's true; not to resolve arguments, but to start arguments. (See
  409. "Believers" for more on this one.)

  529. Sheridan, or more specifically the need for someone *like* Sheridan
  530. began to get through clearly toward the latter part of last season, as I
  531. began planning out season two's progression, and kept looking at elements
  532. of the story and trying to find ways to get Sinclair into the heart of
  533. them. They felt contrived, for the most part; and the other characters,
  534. like Londo and G'Kar and Delenn, were *really* moving forward in a big
  535. way. The role of Sinclair was becoming primarily that of a "problem
  536. solver," and when that happens, a sort of glass bell falls down around the
  537. character, and you can't do much with him.
  538. So what the writer has to do is break that bell in one way or another;

  571. No, we're not going to change the music. The season one music was
  572. right *for that season*. The events in year two are different; the music
  573. reflects where this season is going. The complaints mainly come because
  574. it isn't the same. It isn't *meant* to be the same. It's not an inferior
  575. version of year one, it's a different cue, meant to evoke different
  576. emotions. They say it isn't evoking the same feelings in them as the
  577. first year. Good. That's the intent. It will be changed EVERY season to
  578. correspond with the general sensibility of that season. (And while you
  579. note some who think it's lighter and airy, most others I've heard from say
  580. they think it's darker and more ominous. It's all subjective.)
  581. The only constant in the B5 universe is change.
  582. I've written novels as well as TV. Often, in my published novels, I
  583. include classical quotes at various points as chapter openings. I pick my
  584. quotes to correspond with that section of the book. Should I use the same

  591. and some don't like the new one. Next year, folks'll be lamenting the

  602. still *be*. However, to do what I can with the question (never let it be
  603. said I don't try to accommodate....).
  604. If Lyta had stayed on B5, her arc would be pretty close to that of
  605. Talia, except that she would have begun to form a strong link to Kosh,
  606. first in the form of dreams, then something with implications that could
  607. be read as menacing or benign.
  608. If Dr. Kyle would have stayed around, he would have moved more into
  609. the position of advisor/paternal figure for Sinclair. He also would have
  610. continued to be more scientist than doctor.
  611. Takashima would have been revealed as having been in on the Vorlon
  612. assassination attempt by season's end, and would have betrayed Garibaldi
  613. in the events in "Chrysalis," either giving him over to those involved
  614. with the coup, or pulling the trigger herself. While we would know this,
  615. our characters would not, for as much as another full season.
  616. Carolyn Sykes would've gotten into major trouble with one of the
  617. major EarthCorps.
  618. Finally, if Sinclair had stayed with B5 at this juncture, the events
  619. in "Points" (the reveal of the Minbari surrender) would've taken place in
  620. episode 3 instead of 1. Episode 1 would've consisted mainly of the events
  621. in "Revelations," which was mainly as a bystander to the events around
  622. him, since the sister aspect specific to Sheridan obviously wouldn't be
  623. there. Basically, with all the events surrounding Delenn, Londo, G'Kar
  624. and others, he didn't have one whole hell of a lot to *DO* in the first

  645. My sense has always been that no one hanging thread should be allowed
  646. to hang more than one season. And all information needed to understand
  647. any thread must be included in the episode.
  648. When I work here on the nets with notes about foreshadowing, it's
  649. basically to play and allow some folks to start to figure out stuff before
  650. it happens. This is something that, from talking to many non-netted
  651. viewers, the regular audience member doesn't really try to do. The
  652. emphasis in the minds of most viewers is tuning in to see what happened.
  653. The emphasis here on the nets is to try and figure out what's going to
  654. happen BEFORE it happens.
  655. The influene on the show by the nets is really minimal, if at all.
  656. Mainly the purpose of the nets, from my perspective, is a) to help

  764. world that has to consider cross-continental flights, shooting schedules,
  765. and a thousand other areas.
  766. Further, in episode one, from a strictly creative point of view,
  767. I had to a) introduce a new character and make him interesting, b) tie
  768. up some important war threads from season one, c) come up with a present
  769. time/foreground story (the Tragati) to make the episode self-contained,
  770. d) keep all of the other characters moving...and a zillion other things.
  771. If I had dropped a piece with Sinclair into the midst of this, it would
  772. have royally screwed up my structure.
  773. I COULD NOT HAVE GIVEN THAT SCENE THE TIME AND ATTENTION AND
  774. IMPORTANCE IT DESERVED. When we *do* see Sinclair again, it will be in
  775. a context where it will be important, and can be handled properly.
  776. I *really* don't like people second-guessing me; worse still when
  777. they imply motivations and engage in personal speculations that have
  778. NOTHING WHATSOEVER to do with the real world, or the story that I'm trying
  779. to tell. Okay, Theron, YOU wouldn't have done it this way. So go make
  780. YOUR show. This is mine. And I'll do it as I see fit, in order to tell
  781. the story that I want to tell.
  782. Can we now resolve this and move on?

  970. Here's why I'm troubled by this discussion not at all.
  971. I've been here before.
  972. Last season, in the first handful of episodes we aired, some folks
  973. were screaming that they hated Sinclair, O'Hare was a terrible actor, on
  974. and on and on (many of them now the ones yelling about how he was the
  975. great thespic center of the story, and is irreplaceable). Same thing now
  976. with Sheridan.
  977. You get to know a character OVER TIME. I made a conscious decision
  978. at the top not to go for broad-strokes characterization, but rather peel
  979. back layers over time. Lots of folks hated Londo at first. Then they
  980. got to know him *over time*, and turned around to the favorite character
  981. for many people.
  982. This was made clearest to me after "Infection" aired, number four to
  983. be broadcast, when lots of people said that they felt O'Hare was finally
  984. settling into his role and had improved. Only later they discovered that
  985. "Infection" was actually the FIRST episode we shot, it just aired later
  986. than it was produced (4 rather than 1). It wasn't that O'Hare had settled
  987. into Sinclair, it was that the AUDIENCE was settling into Sinclair.
  988. One of the things I've seen most often on the nets is a certain lack
  989. of patience...if the actor doesn't grab one right off with some folks,
  990. it's "he's a bad actor!" No, you don't work as much, and as successfuly,
  991. as Bruce and be a bad actor. He's not. It's just taking time -- as with
  992. ALL our characters -- to get to know the audience, and vice-versa.
  993. I've been here before...heard some yelling that they hated Ivanova,
  994. Claudia was a rotten actor, space her (now one of the most popular
  995. characters on the show), same for Garibaldi and others at varying times.
  996. But by season's end, once we got to KNOW who these people WERE, then that
  997. changed. As it'll change here.
