  4. Synopsis by Katrina Glerum (kat@midwinter.com)
  5. Ivanova requests a favor from Delenn. She wants to borrow a White Star
  6. ship to go in search of First Ones like the ones found at Sigma 957
  7. ([9]"Voices of Authority") who might assist them in their desperate
  8. mission next week against Z'ha'dum.
  9. Vir and Londo hear a party in the throne room. Draped in chains and
  10. garbed in a punishing jester's costume which is thrusting spikes into
  11. his head and body, G'Kar silently suffers the merry abuse of
  12. Cartagia's courtiers.
  13. Ivanova and Marcus are having no success in their search, which is no
  14. wonder considering that they are relying on wild stories that
  15. travelers have told of godlike beings or ancient civilizations. So
  16. far, they all lead only to dead ends.
  17. Zack has located the transport which is supposed to have found
  18. Garibaldi's Starfury, and he takes a wing out to investigate.
  19. Alone with Londo in the imperial pleasure gardens, Vir finally erupts
  20. in outrage against G'Kar's humiliation and agony and Londo's seeming
  21. unconcern. Once again Londo counsels biding their time. The entire
  22. business of plotting against the Emperor is too disturbing for poor
  23. Vir. That is, until the Emperor chances upon them, waving bloody hands
  24. and complaining strenuously at G'Kar's refusal to scream under
  25. torture. Without a bit more action, Cartagia regrets that he will just
  26. have to kill the Narn. It's really no fun any other way. After
  27. Cartagia departs, Vir decides regicide isn't so objectionable after
  28. all.
  29. Delenn pays a visit to Lyta Alexander. There is nothing in the
  30. telepath's quarters but a mattress and the standard communications
  31. console. A bit embarrassed, Lyta explains that the new Vorlon
  32. ambassador has required her to remove everything else because they are
  33. distractions, and since he can force her to obey, she has. Delenn
  34. wants Lyta to find out why the Vorlons are not assisting in the
  35. mission against Z'ha'dum. Lyta replies that the Vorlons appear to have
  36. plans of their own and they don't seem to be interested in what
  37. happens to others any more. Although terrified of the ambassador, Lyta
  38. vows to try to help Delenn.
  39. Zack and his team find the transport they are looking for and order it
  40. to surrender. When it maintains radio silence they fire to disable it.
  41. It ejects a life pod and explodes. Inside the pod is Garibaldi, meshed
  42. down to a table, unconscious, and wearing a week-old beard. A computer
  43. voice says, "Activating program," and Garibaldi awakens for a moment.
  44. Zack rushes him to the station, where Dr. Franklin is disappointed
  45. that Zack can't tell him anything about who was holding Garibaldi; but
  46. the prognosis is good and Garibaldi is expected to recover.
  47. The Vorlon streams out of Lyta to her great discomfort. She angrily
  48. shouts that she deserves some respect for her sacrifices to the
  49. Vorlons, and some answers. "Respect? From whom?" the Ambassador
  50. replies. As she dejectedly turns to go she decides to chance it and
  51. mentally probes the Vorlon. He slaps her across the room with a blast
  52. of energy. Then, leaning forward, he says chillingly, "You would know
  53. my thoughts? Would you?" The disk on the head of his suit dilates and
  54. her screams begin.
  55. "A little scream. Is that so much to ask for?" Londo begs. If G'Kar
  56. will just put aside his pride and give the emperor the reaction he
  57. craves, he can live to fulfill his bargain with Mollari. G'Kar
  58. refuses, arguing that he would no longer be a Narn if he gave in, and
  59. that of course Londo can't possibly understand.
  60. "Yes I do," Londo retorts savagely, as he leaves G'Kar's cell. "Yes I
  61. do!"
  62. Ivanova broods in the captains chair. With a couple of hours to kill,
  63. Marcus asks her about her plans if they live through this war. She
  64. wants to return home, travel some, pay her respects to her dead
  65. father, but there's no one special waiting. Marcus has someone
  66. special, he says, but she doesn't know it yet. He's never actually had
  67. relations with a woman, it turns out.
  68. "I thought First Ones were rare," Ivanova mutters.
  69. Just then, the ship's controls pick up some odd signals which appear
  70. to indicate a pocket in hyperspace hidden by a distortion field. They
  71. switch course to investigate. As they enter the pocket, they can see
  72. from the forward windows a vast fleet including some absolutely
  73. enormous ships. The smaller vessels shooting around the edges reveal
  74. that this is a Vorlon fleet on the move.
  75. Garibaldi comes to in Medlab. He tells Zack that he's having bad
  76. dreams, but doesn't elaborate on the visions of Shadow ships and
  77. incarceration that are hounding him. He seems surprised that two weeks
  78. have passed since Sheridan left for Z'ha'dum, but not very surprised
  79. that Sheridan died there.
  80. An enormous bird-shaped ship travels though hyperspace on an unknown
  81. trajectory.
  82. Delenn thanks the Brakiri ambassador for bringing information
  83. regarding what the other races are planning. Those who oppose the
  84. decision to attack Z'ha'dum intend to hold a rally in the Zocalo to
  85. gather support for stopping the assault. Delenn insists that the
  86. Shadows will attack in any case so it's better to strike now when they
  87. are weak. As he departs, the Ambassador asks if she knows anything
  88. about the large vessel that seems to be approaching Babylon 5. She
  89. does not.
  90. Vir and Londo are roused in the middle of the night and led by a
  91. taciturn guard to a secret alcove. Vir is terrified. And well he
  92. should be, for they are guests in Cartagia's personal torture chamber.
  93. They are not the entertainment however... G'Kar is. The Emperor has
  94. decreed that there and now, G'Kar will either cry out under the stroke
  95. of the electro-whip, or die on the 40th beat. G'Kar suffers mightily,
  96. as Londo surreptitiously mouths "scream" at him. At the 39th stroke,
  97. the Narn finally gives a mighty wail and sinks to the floor.
  98. Jumping into B5 space, Ivanova orders an immediate meeting with Lyta
  99. Alexander and a thorough scan of sector 70x10x53.
  100. Lennier sees an unusual level of activity in the Zocalo and notifies
  101. Delenn.
  102. The huge birdlike ship exits the jump gate and initiates docking
  103. procedures without the station's approval. Ivanova orders a security
  104. red alert. Garibaldi struggles off his bed to go investigate.
  105. From a catwalk above the Zocolo, the Drazi leader begins to stir up
  106. the crowd with anti-Minbari rhetoric.
  107. Zack isn't happy to see the Chief out of Medlab but can't stop to send
  108. him back. Security forces square off against the personnel transport
  109. as it approaches the floor of the docking bay. Two forms are visible
  110. inside. But when the door opens, all Garibaldi can say is, "Well, I'll
  111. be damned."
  112. The crowd in the Zocalo begins to grow more rowdy as the Drazi
  113. continues. He claims that they will all be destroyed if anyone attacks
  114. Z'ha'dum, just as Sheridan was. To the astonishment of them all, the
  115. dead man himself steps up onto their platform.
  116. "Captain. We're sorry. We thought you were dead."
  117. "I was. I'm better now," Sheridan says ironically, sharing a look with
  118. Lorien standing in the shadows.
  119. The Captain begins to address the crowd. No more hesitation. They must
  120. now assemble the greatest fleet in the history of the galaxy. The only
  121. man to have survived Z'ha'dum calls on them and their governments to
  122. end this war once and forever, not just until next time. The crowd
  123. cheers their support.
  124. Delenn rushes to his side, and as they embrace, John promises never to
  125. leave her again.
  126. Ivanova finds Lyta collapsed in her quarters. "You know, don't you,"
  127. Lyta says. "It's started."
  128. The war council gathers in Sheridan's office for a briefing. He
  129. explains what he has learned about the Vorlon and Shadow objectives,
  130. and how the balance between them has been lost. "Something, Mr.
  131. Garibaldi?" Sheridan snaps at the Chief who is glaring at Lorien
  132. suspiciously.
  133. "I just want to know who our new best friend is," Garibaldi growls. He
  134. isn't satisfied with just a name, or Sheridan's assurances, or the
  135. rest of the secrecy surrounding the Captain's return.
  136. Ivanova and Marcus enter with Lyta. The joy of reunion is quickly
  137. overshadowed by the report of the vast Vorlon fleet followed by the
  138. telepath's news. To everyone's horror it appears that that fleet has
  139. just destroyed an inhabited planet because it had harbored a Shadow
  140. force. The Vorlons have decided that it's time to destroy everything
  141. that has been touched by the Shadows. Now the Army of Light must stop
  142. both the Shadows and the Vorlons if anyone hopes to survive this
  143. struggle.
  144. Meanwhile, the Vorlon planet-killer ship cruises towards its next
  145. target.
