  4. It is January 8, 2259. The Earth Alliance ship Agamemnon jumps into
  5. hyperspace. Its commanding officer, Captain John Sheridan, receives a
  6. gold channel message from General Hague of the joint chiefs of staff.
  7. General Hague tells Captain Sheridan that a Minbari warship has
  8. appeared several times in Earth-controlled space, only a short
  9. distance from Babylon 5. Hague believes that the ship may have hostile
  10. intent. Sheridan doesn't understand until Hague tells him that the
  11. ship is a renegade warship, which Sheridan correctly guesses is called
  12. the Trigati. The Earth Alliance is awaiting the arrival of a ship sent
  13. by the Minbari government to assist should the warship decide to
  14. attack. Sheridan is ordered to make personal contact with that ship to
  15. help with the search. Sheridan questions the wisdom of that action,
  16. remembering his previous encounter with the Minbari, when he destroyed
  17. one of their warships. Hague understands Sheridan's reservations, but
  18. tells Sheridan to proceed to Babylon 5 to perform one additional duty.
  19. [INLINE] The Agamemnon.
  20. On Babylon 5, Ivanova, currently in command of the station, walks
  21. through the halls and is bothered by several aliens, whom she sets in
  22. their place during an elevator ride. The action of the scene continues
  23. under her voice, a status report for the station: "It is now eight
  24. days since the death of Earth Alliance president Louis Santiago, and
  25. five days since Commander Sinclair was recalled to Earth without
  26. explanation--and the whole place has gone straight to Hell. I can only
  27. conclude that I'm paying off karma at a vastly accelerated rate.
  28. Security Chief Michael Garibaldi remains in critical condition in
  29. Medlab. Dr. Franklin's done all he can, but we still don't know if
  30. he'll recover. As for Ambassador Delenn, well, something's going on in
  31. her quarters. That's for sure."
  32. General Hague contacts Ivanova and tells her that Commander Sinclair
  33. will not be returning to Babylon 5 and that he has been permanently
  34. reassigned to the Minbari homeworld as the first human ambassador to
  35. the planet. Hague informs her that Captain Sheridan is the new choice
  36. for the commander of Babylon 5, but Ivanova is unsure of the decision,
  37. claiming that it is "bound to be a controversial choice." Hague
  38. understands, but tells her that the decision has already been made. He
  39. ends the communication.
  40. In Delenn's quarters, Lennier continues to maintain a vigil over the
  41. chrysalis in which Delenn is changing. Another Minbari, Hedronn,
  42. enters and addresses Lennier directly. "So...she's done it, hasn't
  43. she? She's in there. We told her to wait. `The prophecy will attend to
  44. itself,' we told her. Now we are committed to the path. I've spoken
  45. with the other members of the council. The Trigati has been seen in
  46. this sector. If it should appear, you must go to the humans and tell
  47. them what we told you. It's time they knew the truth."
  48. An officer approaches Ivanova, and wants to talk to her about
  49. Sheridan's arrival. She orders him to have a full honor guard in place
  50. when he arrives, but he tells her that Sheridan's transport has
  51. already docked; there was a miscommunication about the time. She
  52. rushes off and meets Sheridan just as he comes aboard, and he
  53. officially takes command of the station. While his luggage is
  54. delivered to his quarters, Ivanova takes him on a tour of the station.
  55. He asks her what the status of the station is, and she recounts it for
  56. him. After hearing about Garibaldi, G'Kar, Delenn, and the
  57. ever-mysterious Kosh, the only reply he can come up with is
  58. "Interesting place you have here..."
  59. Elsewhere on the station, there is another arrival -- a Minbari who
  60. asks the computer to show him the station, but walks away after
  61. hearing the description of the green sector -- the ambassadorial
  62. quarters.
  63. Ivanova and Sheridan complete their tour and arrive in the new
  64. commander's quarters. She takes the opportunity to ask him about his
  65. appointment as head of the station. He tells her that he was President
  66. Santiago's second choice to head the station, probably because he had
  67. worked with many races, including the Minbari. This worries Ivanova,
  68. who reminds him that the Minbari still refer to him as "Starkiller,"
  69. and guesses they won't be happy to learn he is in command of Babylon
  70. 5. He hopes they have forgotten, but doesn't believe they have. He
  71. asks her to help bring him up to speed. They talk about the crew's
  72. reaction to the President's death. Many of them are having a difficult
  73. time accepting the loss. Ivanova and Sheridan are no exceptions.
  74. Because of the recent turmoil around the station, Ivanova is
  75. especially glad to see Sheridan again; they had served together at the
  76. transport point near Io. They make plans to go to C&C so that he can
  77. deliver a "good luck speech" to the crew.
  78. [INLINE] Sheridan describes his speech.
  79. Elsewhere on the station, Hedronn notices someone he recognizes -- the
  80. Minbari who was on his way to the ambassadorial sector of Babylon 5 --
  81. as Kalain. Hedronn runs after Kalain, who grabs and threatens him,
  82. claiming that the Grey Council betrayed the Minbari. Kalain explains
  83. that he has intercepted a message saying that Sheridan had been chosen
  84. to lead Babylon 5. When Hedronn protests that the wishes of the Grey
  85. Council were ignored, Kalain asks if Delenn also ignored the Council.
  86. Kalain says his people have supporters in the Grey Council, who have
  87. told them that Sinclair is on Minbar, though Kalain does not believe
  88. that Sinclair being an ambassador is the whole story. Kalain lets
  89. Hedronn go, warning him to leave while he still can.
  90. [INLINE] "Minbari do not kill other Minbari!"
  91. After she goes to check on Garibaldi's condition, Ivanova finds
  92. Sheridan and tells him that the officers on C&C are ready for him. He
  93. enters and begins his speech, talking about the visit he made when he
  94. was twenty-one to Tibet and the Dalai Lama. After eating a very simple
  95. dinner, the Dalai Lama asked if he understood. Sheridan didn't. "Good
  96. beginning," the Dalai Lama said to him. "It will be even better when
  97. you begin to understand what you do not understand."
  98. During Sheridan's speech, a call from security says that a Minbari is
  99. demanding to speak to Sheridan. Sheridan and Ivanova leave. While they
  100. are on their way, Kalain attempts to enter the green sector, but is
  101. stopped by a security officer, whom he attacks. Kalain steals the
  102. officer's weapon and proceeds into the green sector.
  103. It turns out that the Minbari who wanted to speak with Sheridan was
  104. Hedronn, who has some important information regarding Kalain. Hedronn
  105. tells Sheridan and Ivanova that Kalain was second in command of one of
  106. their flagships during the Earth-Minbari war and that he vanished when
  107. the war ended. Ivanova asks why Hedronn believes Kalain is here to
  108. cause trouble, but Hedronn just answers that he has his reasons.
  109. Sheridan suspects the ship Kalain was second in command of was the
  110. Trigati. Ivanova has never heard of the ship, but Hedronn explains
  111. that at the end of the war, Sineval, one of their warship commanders,
  112. committed suicide rather than obey the Grey Council's order to
  113. surrender. When that happened, Kalain took command of the ship, and it
  114. vanished. Sheridan says that, while the ship had been seen over the
  115. years, it had never attacked. Hedronn suspects that its recent
  116. reappearance suggests it might be "out of retirement."
  117. Sheridan doesn't understand, however, why Hedronn, who claimed that he
  118. was from the Ministry of Culture, knew Kalain, a high-ranking member
  119. of the warrior caste after twelve years. Hedronn doesn't respond,
  120. saying only that he would answer if he recognized Sheridan's
  121. authority, but he doesn't because the Minbari government was not
  122. consulted on Sheridan's appointment. Sheridan tells Hedronn that the
  123. president decided on him because the Minbari had too much influence
  124. over an Earth outpost.
  125. "And the day that a man such as yourself is given a position of this
  126. importance is a dark day indeed," Hedronn says. "We lost many of our
  127. best warriors because of you. And we do not soon forget such things.
  128. If there is a doom on this station, it is because you brought it
  129. here." Hedronn then leaves abruptly.
  130. Because of Hedronn's attitude, Sheridan believes that he is a member
  131. of the Grey Council, because no one else would know someone so high in
  132. the warrior caste so well. Sheridan then admits that Ivanova was
  133. correct, that the Minbari don't want him in command of Babylon 5. She
  134. points out that they are a prideful people, and that he did destroy
  135. their flagship, the Black Star. She asks how he destroyed it. Sheridan
  136. explains that, because their weapons could not lock on to the ship,
  137. due to some sort of stealth technology, he mined the asteroid field
  138. between Jupiter and Mars with fusion bombs, which don't need direct
  139. targets. It destroyed the Black Star and three other heavy cruisers.
  140. "It was the only real victory we had in the whole damn war, and I am
  141. not about to apologize for it!"
  142. Sheridan suddenly remembers Hedronn's statement that Kalain felt
  143. betrayed by the Minbari homeworld, and deduces that, in such a
  144. situation, it would be natural to attack the representative of that
  145. world. Realizing they might not have much time, Sheridan and Ivanova
  146. rush to Delenn's quarters to find Kalain pointing a gun at Lennier.
  147. They are able to easily apprehend Kalain, but when Sheridan attempts
  148. to get a close look at the chrysalis, Lennier stops him. Ambassador
  149. Delenn is indisposed, he says, and Sheridan should come back
  150. later...much later.
  151. [INLINE] Lennier defends Delenn.
  152. Sheridan and Ivanova interrogate Kalain, asking him about the Trigati
  153. and why he has suddenly appeared on Babylon 5. Sheridan can't believe
  154. that Kalain's goal was to murder Lennier and Delenn; he had ample time
  155. to kill both of them.
  156. "Everyone knows Minbari do not kill Minbari," Kalain says. Sheridan
  157. doesn't accept that as an answer and again asks Kalain about his
  158. presence. "Perhaps everyone is wrong."
  159. Sheridan concludes that Kalain never intended to kill them, but that
  160. something else was going on. "Perhaps you are the problem," Kalain
  161. replies.
  162. Ivanova tries to intervene, claiming that they are getting nowhere,
  163. but Sheridan has one more question for Kalain. "I'm told that after
  164. the death of your commanding officer, you took command of a Minbari
  165. war cruiser. But if you're here, where's your ship?"
  166. Sheridan and Ivanova leave. Lennier catches up to the two of them
  167. outside and apologizes for his earlier behavior. He says that he needs
  168. to speak to both of them. "It concerns," he explains, "the reason you
  169. were sent here, the relocation of commander Sinclair, and the reason
  170. we surrendered at the Battle of the Line." When they reach Sheridan's
  171. office, Lennier begins his story:
  172. "After three years, the Holy War that began when our leader was killed
  173. by an Earth explorer division was almost over. To avenge Dukhat's
  174. death, we had pursued your forces all the way back to your homeworld.
  175. The few surviving Earth ships that were ordered to defend your world
  176. at any cost... were not an obstacle. The Grey Council had come to
  177. oversee the final victory of our forces."
  178. The scene shifts, back to the inside of the Grey Council ship, where
  179. the Grey Council is in session surrounded by a display showing the
  180. battle raging outside.
  181. [9][LINK]
  182. "They fight bravely. They cannot harm our ships, but they continue to
  183. try," says Delenn.
  184. Hedronn dismisses her comment. "Whether they fight or not, they know
  185. they will die anyway. So really, is this bravery or simple
  186. desperation?"
  187. "Perhaps they are the same thing. We should bring one of them aboard
  188. for questioning. If our next step is the final assault on their world,
  189. we must know their defenses."
  190. "Very well, Delenn. Choose, but quickly. We are fast running out of
  191. candidates."
  192. Delenn sees a Starfury making a suicide run at their ship. "That one,"
  193. she says. A beam immobilizes the Starfury, and it is brought aboard.
  194. Lennier continues his story. "This was the first time the Grey Council
  195. would have direct contact with a human, in this case Sinclair. He was
  196. tortured, interrogated, scanned. During the course of the scan, the
  197. Council discovered something terrible. At first, they refused to
  198. believe it, so they took in other humans and had them scanned as well.
  199. But it was true."
  200. "What was true?" asks Ivanova.
  201. "It is our belief that every generation of Minbari is reborn in each
  202. following generation. Remove those souls, and the whole suffers. We
  203. are diminished. Over the last two thousand years, there have been
  204. fewer Minbari born into each generation. And those who are born do not
  205. seem equal to those who came before. It almost as if our greater souls
  206. have been disappearing. At the Battle of the Line, we discovered where
  207. our souls were going. They were going to you. Minbari souls are being
  208. reborn, in part or in full, in human bodies."
  209. "So you stopped the war to avoid harming your own souls?"
  210. Lennier confirms that, and continues. "But the Council knew that our
  211. people, and yours, were not ready for this information. It could
  212. unravel our entire society. So we could not tell our generals the
  213. reason for the surrender. We had all memory of the examination erased
  214. from Sinclair's mind, and we let him go. It has been our secret. Now
  215. it is yours. It must be kept."
  216. "I don't understand. If this is such a secret, why tell us?"
  217. "Because changes are coming. Commander Sinclair was the first. There
  218. will be more."
  219. The meeting is interrupted by a call from C&C--a Minbari cruiser, on
  220. an attack vector, is coming through the jumpgate. Warren Keffer, the
  221. leader of Zeta Squadron, watches with the other people in his squad,
  222. but can't believe what he is seeing. Sheridan arrives at C&C and
  223. orders a red alert. He activates the defense grid and puts all
  224. squadrons on standby. While this happens, Kalain, in his detention
  225. cell, removes a tooth from his mouth. He opens it, revealing a blue
  226. liquid. He puts the tooth in his mouth and swallows.
  227. [INLINE] Kalain practices poor dental hygeine.
  228. Captain Sheridan communicates with the warship, which the commander
  229. identifies as the Trigati. She demands that Kalain be returned, since
  230. he did not kill or harm anyone aboard Babylon 5. When Sheridan
  231. refuses, she launches her fighters. Sheridan counters, launching the
  232. fighters aboard Babylon 5. He informs her that an attack could be
  233. considered an act of war.
  234. "The war has already begun, Captain. All that remains now is honor and
  235. death."
  236. This remark puzzles Sheridan, since no one has yet been killed. He
  237. suddenly realizes what's going on: they are attempting to start a war,
  238. but since Kalain hasn't killed anyone and the Trigati hasn't attacked,
  239. they must be trying to frame Babylon 5. This is confirmed when
  240. security reports that Kalain has killed himself. Ivanova can't believe
  241. that Minbari would attack after learning they were sharing Minbari
  242. souls, but Sheridan reminds her that the Trigati was not informed of
  243. that. The Minbari fighters close in on the station, and Sheridan
  244. orders his fighters to intercept and engage.
  245. While the Babylon 5 fighters move to intercept, Sheridan looks at a
  246. display of both groups of fighters; somehow Babylon 5 is able to track
  247. the Minbari fighters, even though it's using the same kind of tracking
  248. system Earthforce used during the war.
  249. Sheridan orders his fighters not to attack. He gives a message to
  250. Ivanova, telling her to transmit it through the jumpgate without the
  251. Trigati intercepting it. She does so, but doesn't think it will work
  252. if it is a distress signal, as no one could arrive in time.
  253. [10][Movie] A tight-beam transmission using the station laser.
  254. The Trigati's fighters continue to advance, but Sheridan orders his
  255. fighters to maintain position. When the Trigati's fighters reach the
  256. Earth ships, they do not attack -- they fly past and return to the
  257. Trigati. Another Minbari ship suddenly comes through the jumpgate.
  258. Ivanova is afraid that the Trigati fighters were waiting for
  259. reinforcements, but Sheridan tells her that, since he knew another
  260. Minbari ship was looking for the Trigati, he figured they must be
  261. waiting in hyperspace.
  262. [INLINE] [11][Movie] The Minbari fighters fly past.
  263. The other cruiser orders the Trigati to surrender. Sheridan continues
  264. to explain to Ivanova that, because they could track the Minbari
  265. fighters, that probably meant the Minbari wanted to be destroyed. The
  266. Trigati was in exile for twelve years, and could not go home, fight
  267. without causing a war, or surrender without being dishonored. If
  268. Babylon 5 was forced to attack, they would die at human hands, thereby
  269. becoming martyrs.
  270. The Trigati attempts to back off and open up a jump point, but the war
  271. cruiser cuts off their engines with a beam. They order the Trigati to
  272. surrender and be boarded, but the Trigati refuses, and replies with
  273. only one word: "honor." The Trigati self-destructs in a ball of flame,
  274. apparently from their fusion reactors. A signal comes in from the war
  275. cruiser; Sheridan greets the Minbari commander.
  276. [INLINE] [12][Movie] The Trigati is attacked.
  277. "Perhaps to you," the Minbari on the other end says to Sheridan, "this
  278. was a tactical problem to be solved. For us, this has been a great
  279. sorrow. The crew of the Trigati were heroes to many of our people.
  280. Their death will be mourned, and your name will be remembered." The
  281. Minbari war cruiser cuts off the communication and vanishes into the
  282. jump gate.
  283. Later, Sheridan is in his quarters, looking through his belongings,
  284. which have recently been delivered. Ivanova arrives and asks Sheridan
  285. if something is wrong. "When I got my orders," Sheridan explains, "I
  286. figured this place was a great opportunity. And now I wonder if coming
  287. here was irresponsible. This whole mess with the Trigati might not
  288. have happened if I hadn't been here. I mean, my presence, my...actions
  289. in the war...I'm to blame for bringing all this trouble to Babylon 5.
  290. What was it our friend in the Grey Council said? 'If there is a doom
  291. on this station, it is because you brought it here.' Well maybe he was
  292. right. I spoke with the president. He is the only other human who
  293. knows why the Minbari surrendered, and he doesn't believe this stuff
  294. about us sharing Minbari souls, and I can't say that I do either. But
  295. they believe it. That's why they chose Sinclair to run this place...
  296. that's why they've picked him to live on their world. He was their
  297. first human contact. Him they trust. But me? I don't know. If Sinclair
  298. had been here instead, maybe they might not have attacked."
  299. Ivanova tells Sheridan to give himself the benefit of the doubt.
  300. Before she leaves, she tells him that he can talk to her any time, if
  301. he needs to.
  302. Lennier is busy preparing candles in Delenn's quarters, and setting
  303. them around her chrysalis. "I told them, Delenn, as I was ordered. I
  304. only wish I could have told them the rest -- about the great enemy
  305. that is returning and the prophecy that the two sides of our spirit
  306. must unite against the darkness or be destroyed. They say it will take
  307. both of our races to stop the darkness. I am told that the Earthers
  308. will discover all this, soon enough, on their own. I hope they are
  309. right. Because if we are wrong, no one will survive our mistake." He
  310. says good night, and leaves right before the chrysalis begins moving,
  311. and Delenn begins to emerge.
  312. [INLINE] "I only wish I could have told them the rest."
  313. Ivanova, Dr. Franklin, and Keffer discuss the recent events in a
  314. nightclub on the station. Keffer asks what they think of the new
  315. captain, and Dr. Franklin and Ivanova both believe that he will be
  316. okay. He was supposed to meet them there for drinks, but Franklin says
  317. that when he last saw Sheridan, he was going to the C&C to deliver his
  318. good luck speech.
  319. "It was an early earth president, Abraham Lincoln, who best described
  320. our situation. 'The dogmas of the quiet past are inadequate to the
  321. stormy present. The occasion is piled high with difficulty, and we
  322. must rise to the occasion. We cannot escape history. We will be
  323. remembered in spite of ourselves. The fiery trial through which we
  324. pass will light us down in honor or dishonor, to the last generation.
  325. We shall nobly save, or meanly lose, or last best hope of Earth.'"
  326. Though there is no one else on C&C, he has still delivered his speech
  327. in time. He leaves C&C to begin the second day of his new command.
