  3. List] [7][Previous] [8][Next]
  4. (Continuing where [9]Part 1 left off)
  5. Garibaldi is relieved to hear that Sinclair and Ivanova are returning
  6. from the planet, but his relief is cut short when a tech announces
  7. that a ship, a _big_ ship, is coming through the jump gate. He looks
  8. down at his computer display. "What the hell?"
  9. The ship is an Earth Alliance heavy cruiser, the Hyperion, Captain
  10. Ellis Pierce commanding. He says he's been ordered to take control of
  11. the situation.
  12. [INLINE] The Hyperion comes through the gate.
  13. In Medlab, Sinclair and Franklin watch over the alien from Epsilon 3.
  14. Franklin says he is still studying the alien's biology, but that he
  15. seems to be stabilizing.
  16. Pierce is waiting in Sinclair's office, looking at an onscreen
  17. introduction to Babylon 5's facilities, when Sinclair arrives. Pierce
  18. says his crew will enjoy getting a little R&R on such a "cushy"
  19. station. Sinclair wants to know who authorized Pierce to take over;
  20. Sinclair has jurisdiction over Babylon 5's sector. Pierce says the
  21. Hyperion was in hyperspace when it received orders to divert to
  22. Babylon 5. The potential of the technologies Sinclair has discovered
  23. are enormous, and Earth wants a show of force so other races don't try
  24. to get a piece of the action before Earth has had its pick; if the
  25. Hyperion weren't present, the situation could get very messy. Sinclair
  26. angrily replies that the situation was fine until Pierce charged in
  27. with a heavy cruiser and shook things up.
  28. [INLINE] Pierce tells Sinclair why he's there.
  29. Garibaldi is at a bar, drinking water and watching the news with some
  30. other patrons. The top story, of course, is the revolt on the Mars
  31. colony. Earth is sending in shock troops to quell the rebellion. The
  32. other bar patrons are delighted, and start insulting the Mars
  33. colonists. "We pay taxes so they can have the best atmosphere
  34. reprocessors, water reclamation... They ought to be damned grateful."
  35. One of them suggests, jokingly, that Earth should do "what my
  36. grandfather always said: nuke 'em till they glow and shoot 'em in the
  37. dark. That'd take care of 'em, just like magic." Infuriated, Garibaldi
  38. performs a magic trick of his own, assaulting the mouthy bar patron
  39. and stalking off.
  40. Sinclair confers with Senator Hidoshi, complaining that he'd been told
  41. personally by President Santiago that he has jurisdiction over Babylon
  42. 5's sector. He threatens to resign over the issue unless Hidoshi can
  43. get Santiago to reaffirm his authority in the matter. Hidoshi says
  44. he'll see what he can do, but it might not be much as the President is
  45. preoccupied with the Mars colony revolt.
  46. In the command center, Ivanova tells Sinclair that the Hyperion has
  47. just launched an expedition to the planet's surface, and that the
  48. planet's defense systems, much more active than before, are preventing
  49. them from getting close. Sinclair demands that Pierce call off the
  50. expedition, making up a story about needing a special jamming device
  51. to get through the defense systems.
  52. Ivanova then tells Sinclair that they've been monitoring greatly
  53. increased seismic activity from the planet, activity that seems to be
  54. artificially induced and that's increasing in severity. If it
  55. continues to do so, the planet will rip itself apart, taking Babylon 5
  56. with it.
  57. Later, Ivanova reports that they've discovered the planet is
  58. honeycombed with passages and fusion reactors, some of them miles in
  59. diameter. The fusion reactors seem to be set to overload. She
  60. estimates less than 48 hours until the planet is destroyed. Garibaldi
  61. says it would take at least three days to evacuate the station even if
  62. all the ships in the sector were called in.
  63. [INLINE] Discussing the situation.
  64. Londo catches up with Ivanova in the corridor and demands to know
  65. what's going on. He presses her on the issue, until she replies, "You
  66. want to know what's really going on down there right now? Boom. Boom
  67. boom boom. Boom boom. _Boom_. Have a nice day."
  68. Delenn and Draal are returning to Delenn's quarters when Draal hears
  69. the sick alien's voice calling out to him. The two of them head for
  70. Medlab.
  71. Sinclair goes to talk to Garibaldi about the incident in the bar.
  72. Garibaldi expresses his frustration at finding himself helpless; he
  73. can't help Lise, doesn't even know if she's alive or dead. "The planet
  74. we're parked next to is about to go up like a Roman candle. What am I
  75. supposed to do, arrest it?" He says he just snapped. He and Sinclair
  76. discuss his reluctance to call Lise over the years -- he was afraid
  77. she'd reject him, and even more afraid she wouldn't -- and Sinclair
  78. promises to try pulling a few strings to get Garibaldi a comm channel
  79. to Mars. He asks Garibaldi to make sure Ivanova leaves the station if
  80. they end up needing to evacuate.
  81. Draal and Delenn arrive in Medlab. Franklin tries to stop them from
  82. going in to see the alien, but the alien awakens and calls out to
  83. Draal. He says everyone must stay away from the planet, that it will
  84. explode without a heart, "without another."
  85. [INLINE] Draal and Delenn listen to the alien.
  86. After getting that confirmation that expeditions to the planet will
  87. only hasten its detonation, Sinclair arrives in the command center to
  88. find that Pierce is about to launch another group of ships to the
  89. planet. He knows what the alien (whose name is Varn) said, but feels
  90. that Varn has every reason to lie to keep people away. Sinclair
  91. threatens to shoot Pierce's ships out of the sky if they approach the
  92. planet, and orders the station's fighters to prepare for launch.
  93. Convinced that Sinclair feels he has nothing to lose, Pierce backs
  94. down.
  95. Suddenly, an unknown alien ship enters through the jumpgate and scans
  96. the station's language and translation files. Its captain, Takarn, who
  97. appears to be of the same race as Varn, claims that the planet belongs
  98. to his people, who have been searching for it for 500 years. He gives
  99. Sinclair and Pierce ten hours to leave the area, or he'll take the
  100. planet by force.
  101. [INLINE] The Hyperion and Babylon 5 are scanned.
  102. Before Sinclair can respond, Pierce answers Takarn with his own
  103. ultimatum: withdraw within nine hours, or the Hyperion will attack.
  104. Varn tells Sinclair that the newcomers are outcasts, rejected by his
  105. people, who are all long dead now. He has been guarding the planet,
  106. connected to the heart of the machine, for five hundred years. He
  107. monitored Babylon 5's construction, learned its languages from its
  108. transmissions, but the time wasn't right to reveal himself until his
  109. failing health forced the issue. He warns Sinclair that the newcomers
  110. must not be allowed to take the planet. It is for the future.
  111. Sinclair talks to Delenn and Draal, who claim that Varn didn't tell
  112. them anything more than what he told Sinclair. Sinclair leaves, and as
  113. Delenn and Draal talk about what Varn meant by "another," Londo enters
  114. and says the three of them need to talk.
  115. Pierce tells Sinclair that he needs Babylon 5's forces to make an
  116. effective attack against the alien ship. Sinclair assures Pierce that
  117. when the time comes, he'll commit his forces to the battle.
  118. Londo, Delenn, and Draal talk about Varn; Londo tells them of Varn's
  119. appearance in the hallway earlier. He wants to help, to take a risk,
  120. as he did years before when he led the raid on Frallis 12. He realizes
  121. that one of the group will have to stay behind permanently.
  122. [INLINE] Londo volunteers his help.
  123. Ivanova clears a transport to leave the station: "The more we get out
  124. now, the fewer we'll have to evacuate later." It flies off -- it's a
  125. shuttle with Centauri markings -- just as Garibaldi links in to report
  126. that someone has stolen Varn from Medlab.
  127. Takarn signals the station, furious that they're allowing a transport
  128. to try to go to the planet. Ivanova checks, and sure enough, the
  129. Centauri shuttle is headed for the surface. Takarn launches his
  130. attack, prompting Babylon 5 and the Hyperion to unleash their fighter
  131. wings. The battle is joined.
  132. Londo, piloting the shuttle, seems delighted to be back in the thick
  133. of things. "Who says the good old days are gone, eh?" Draal and
  134. Delenn, tending after Varn, look a little nervous about Londo's
  135. daredevil piloting style.
  136. [INLINE] Londo looks for the landing thruster controls.
  137. On the station, Sinclair and Ivanova note that the planet isn't
  138. attacking the Centauri shuttle for some reason. Garibaldi goes after
  139. it in a shuttle of his own.
  140. Deep within the planet, with the battle raging furiously overhead,
  141. Garibaldi finds Delenn, Draal, Londo and Varn in the room where
  142. Sinclair and Ivanova discovered Varn initially. Draal tells Garibaldi
  143. that he's staying behind; someone has to run the machine, and it will
  144. give him the purpose, the life in service of others, that he has long
  145. been missing among his own people.
  146. [INLINE] The Hyperion fires its main gun.
  147. Back in space, the battle continues. The station takes a direct hit,
  148. sustaining serious damage. It's about to be fired on again when a
  149. strange force emanates from the planet, causing all the controls in
  150. the command center to go dark. A translucent image of Draal appears,
  151. informing all three parties that the planet belongs to none of them.
  152. "It belongs only to itself, and to the future." As the planet's
  153. secrets would give a huge advantage to any race that had them to
  154. itself, he places the safekeeping of the planet in the hands of the
  155. Babylon 5 Advisory Council, whose enlightened self-interest he hopes
  156. will cause them to leave the place alone. But if not, he warns that
  157. the defense systems are now fully operational, and any ship that
  158. attempts to land will be destroyed.
  159. [INLINE] Emanation from Epsilon 3.
  160. The aliens, apparently not believing the threat, fly toward the
  161. planet. As promised, a tremendously powerful weapon fires from the
  162. surface, vaporizing them instantly.
  163. Delenn says an emotional farewell to Draal. Varn, staying behind to
  164. watch over Draal, assures her that the planet is wondrous, that
  165. Draal's life will be extended. He will "see all the futures, hear all
  166. the songs, and touch the edge of the universe with his thoughts."
  167. As the Hyperion leaves, Pierce says he's received a message from Earth
  168. reaffirming Sinclair's authority. He apologizes to Sinclair. After the
  169. ship leaves, Ivanova tells Sinclair she has a channel to Mars for
  170. Garibaldi.
  171. Garibaldi is delighted to learn that Lise is alive, even more so to
  172. talk to her. She was caught in the crossfire while getting food, but
  173. her wounds aren't serious and she's expected to recover. She says the
  174. fighting has begun to die down; the Earth-supported provisional
  175. government seems to have the upper hand. Garibaldi tells her he's
  176. sorry he ever left, and asks if he can meet up with her on his next
  177. leave. She tells him she's married, and expecting a baby. The news
  178. crushes him.
  179. Later, Garibaldi is in an observation area, staring out into the
  180. stars, when Delenn joins him. He asks why she and Londo didn't come to
  181. Sinclair once they realized someone needed to be in the planet. She
  182. says she didn't, "because I know in my heart that if I had, Commander
  183. Sinclair would be down there now. He is searching for a purpose. But
  184. his destiny lies elsewhere." Garibaldi asks how she managed to get
  185. Londo to go. She says she offered him a deal. She now owes him a large
  186. favor, which she's sure he'll collect eventually, but she says he
  187. enjoyed the adventure, as it awakened something in him that had long
  188. been buried.
  189. [INLINE] Delenn joins Garibaldi.
  190. "One thing I've discovered," Garibaldi says. "Some things are better
  191. left buried." He leaves.
  192. Delenn gazes out across the stars. "Good night, old friend," she says.
  193. "Sleep well."
