  2. [3][Guide] [4][Background] ### SYNOPSIS ### [5][Credits] [6][Episode
  3. List] [7][Previous] [8][Next]
  4. Shon, a young alien boy, has developed a "congested blockage in his
  5. upper air passages." When Dr. Franklin explains to Shon's parents that
  6. Shon's condition can be cured by a fairly routine surgical procedure,
  7. the parents seem bewildered. "You will cut him open?" they ask, and
  8. explain that the "Chosen of God" cannot be "punctured" -- for their
  9. souls will escape.
  10. [INLINE] "_Food animals_ are punctured."
  11. B5 has received a distress signal from the starliner Asimov, which has
  12. been immobilized because of a fire in its command and control
  13. center--unfortunately, the ship is now adrift in Raider territory.
  14. Ivanova (who pleas with Sinclair to send her instead of Garibaldi) is
  15. sent to lead a fighter wing to rescue the Asimov.
  16. Dr. Maya Hernandez, one of the B5 doctors, tries to convince Shon's
  17. parents to allow the procedure, but they are quite determined not to
  18. allow it. Just as it becomes evident that the parents will not change
  19. their mind, Franklin suggests an alternate procedure. He admits that
  20. this procedure won't work as well, but it's better than nothing. After
  21. the parents leave to consider this new method, Dr. Franklin explains
  22. to Hernandez that, though this procedure will obviously not save Shon,
  23. it will at least give Franklin time to try to convince the parents to
  24. change their mind. Both doctors realize that there are only two
  25. options--surgery or death--but Franklin explains that it is sometimes
  26. necessary to "heal the family before you can heal the patient." Shon's
  27. parents return and say that they are willing to try Franklin's new
  28. procedure.
  29. [INLINE] Franklin comforts Shon.
  30. Franklin, who is speaking with Sinclair, explains his dilemma.
  31. Franklin requests that Sinclair order him to perform the surgery, but
  32. Sinclair declines, commenting that it's a dangerous precedent to set.
  33. Franklin explains that that precedent has _already_ been set--by
  34. Sinclair's ordering Dr. Kyle to save Ambassador Kosh (cf. [9]"The
  35. Gathering")--and when Franklin brings up the idea of making this issue
  36. official by petitioning Sinclair with a formal request to operate,
  37. Sinclair asks him to try to find another solution.
  38. Meanwhile, Franklin's "procedure" is obviously not working. When the
  39. parents become angered, Franklin pleads with them again, but they
  40. still refuse to allow surgery. Finally, Franklin threatens to suspend
  41. their parental authority if they will not allow him to operate--and he
  42. makes a formal request for Commander Sinclair to decide this issue.
  43. Shon's parents go to Sinclair and request that he decide in their
  44. favor. Sinclair explains his dilemma--he must consider Franklin's
  45. request, but he must also act as the parents' advocate because the
  46. parents' race has no ambassador on the station. The parents express
  47. their objection--they don't like the situation and believe that
  48. Sinclair will rule against them because "Earth people always stick
  49. together."
  50. The parents visit Ambassador G'Kar and ask for the Narn to intervene
  51. on their behalf, but G'Kar claims that the parents' world doesn't have
  52. much to offer to Narn--and claims the Narns don't casually enter into
  53. other people's affairs. The parents then visit Ambassador Mollari, who
  54. says that he sympathizes with them but explains that it would be too
  55. expensive to intervene--if the Council was called on this matter,
  56. there would be a whole array of costs that would have to be justified.
  57. Ambassador Kosh proves just as unhelpful to the parents: concerning
  58. the issue of a patient's safety versus the concerns of the patient's
  59. world, he simply says, "The avalanche has already started. It is too
  60. late for the pebbles to vote."
  61. [INLINE] Shon's parents plead with Kosh.
  62. When the parents plea with Delenn, she says that she sympathizes
  63. entirely, but she also says that the Minbari are reluctant to get
  64. involved with the religious affairs of other people--especially
  65. because they've seen what happens when other races interfere with
  66. Minbari religious affairs. Delenn explains that both Dr. Franklin and
  67. the parents believe they are doing what's "right" -- yet how can
  68. either of them prove it?
  69. Meanwhile, Ivanova's team has found the Asimov--but they have also
  70. picked up the signal of an approaching Raider vessel.
  71. Sinclair explains to Garibaldi how distraught he is--the buck keeps
  72. being passed back to him. Earth Central refuses to advise, and the
  73. other ambassadors refuse to take action. Later, when Sinclair visits
  74. Shon, Shon explains that, though he doesn't want to die, he doesn't
  75. want the surgery either.
  76. When Sinclair finishes speaking with Shon, Dr. Franklin asks him what
  77. his decision on the request will be. Sinclair explains that it's a
  78. difficult decisions: both sides, according to their own beliefs, are
  79. morally "right." "Who should I believe?" asks Sinclair. "You [Dr.
  80. Franklin], because we share the same beliefs? Or do we? ... What makes
  81. a religion false? If any religion is right, then maybe they all have
  82. to be right. Maybe God doesn't care how you say your prayers, just as
  83. long as you say them ... What we hold sacred gives our lives meaning.
  84. What are we taking away from this child? ... I have to refuse to sign
  85. the order. I can't allow you to perform the operation."
  86. When Franklin angrily confronts Sinclair, Sinclair explains that he
  87. really had no choice in the matter. According to his personal beliefs,
  88. he would sign the order right away--but as commander of B5, he wants
  89. to ensure the neutrality of the station. He explains that he can't
  90. just set other races' beliefs aside whenever it's convenient or
  91. whenever they violate human beliefs. He also says that, though he is
  92. violating the precedent set when he ordered Dr. Kyle to operate on
  93. Kosh, that particular precedent must be stopped somewhere.
  94. Meanwhile, Shon's condition is worsening. Franklin calls Shon's
  95. parents, who say how grateful they are for Sinclair's wisdom, and who
  96. tell Shon how proud they are of him that he is dying honorably. When
  97. Shon's parents leave, however, Franklin decides to operate on Shon
  98. anyway--he can't allow a simple legal order to get in the way of
  99. what's "right," according to him. Dr. Hernandez decides to help him.
  100. [INLINE] Preparing to operate.
  101. The Raider ship that is approaching Ivanova is meanwhile getting
  102. closer. Ivanova, in defiance of general orders to the contrary, breaks
  103. formation and pursues this Raider ship--as the rest of the squadron
  104. escorts the Asimov back to B5. Ivanova successfully destroys this
  105. ship, but notes a large squadron of Raider ships approaching after
  106. her. She reverses her thrusters, trying to escape.
  107. Franklin's operation was successful, and Shon--who is now _physically_
  108. fine--comments that he doesn't feel spiritually any different than he
  109. did before. When his parents arrive, however, they angrily shun
  110. Shon--they treat him as if he were some sort of evil demon and try to
  111. exorcise him.
  112. [INLINE] Shon, abandoned by his parents.
  113. Sinclair, when he hears, angrily confronts Franklin. However, they are
  114. both interrupted by Hernandez, who summons them to the Med Lab. At Med
  115. Lab, the parents have again arrived--and this time they appear a
  116. little more complacent. They say that if it were in their power to
  117. forgive Franklin, they would--because he meant no harm, and because he
  118. did what he did out of compassion. They leave, after wrapping Shon in
  119. a "travelling robe."
  120. A little later, when Franklin and Hernandez are researching the
  121. customs of Shon's race, Franklin comes across a description of a
  122. "travelling robe." Suddenly, he rushes out of the Med Lab, runs
  123. through the corridors, and arrives at Shon's room--only to realize
  124. that he is too late, that the parents have already killed Shon. The
  125. parents, however, don't see why Franklin is so upset--they comment,
  126. "This was not our son. This was only a shell. There was nothing to do
  127. but end the pain of the shell."
  128. [INLINE] "Do not grieve, Dr. Franklin."
  129. Later, Sinclair tells Franklin that he won't ask for his
  130. resignation--this time. However, he comments that Franklin shouldn't
  131. have made the request--then, he wouldn't have had to violate it.
  132. Franklin is quite upset with himself, however, for not knowing that
  133. the parents would kill Shon. Franklin wonders if things might not be
  134. better or easier if nobody cared about life or religion.
  135. "What makes us human is that we care--and because we care, we never
  136. stop trying," replies Sinclair.
  137. Meanwhile, Ivanova and her squadron have returned safely. When
  138. Garibaldi asks her about the orders she violated, Ivanova explains
  139. that sometimes things work out when one takes an educated risk.
  140. Garibaldi replies that at other times, they don't--and he explains the
  141. events of the preceding days to Ivanova.
