  1. <Alpha-1> Net Control Boradcast: ALL OPERATORS, ALL NETS,
  2. Please StandBy, Silence Channel Traffic, JMS coming
  3. on-line in 30 seconds
  4. <Alpha-1> Ladies and Gentelmen, J. M. Strraczynski
  5. <<Alpha-1> Undernet: Your First Question Please.
  6. question: <Psi_Cop> Are there any plans for starting the comic book series
  7. again?
  8. <J_M_S> Yes, the plan is tentatively for Titan UK to do the books, with DC
  9. reprinting the books here, under my supervision for stories. Maybe 4 per
  10. year to start. (This is already in the works, btw.)
  11. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  12. JMS: I had the impression that you had at one point promised that when a
  13. character dies in B5, unlike other shows, the character stays dead.
  14. Does B5 still hold to this promise?
  15. <J_M_S> Basically, yes. There is some variation on the extent of one's
  16. death, and what that means, but the totality of it is, yes, dead is dead.
  17. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  18. 1) How strong is WB's support for B5?
  19. 2) Do you feel that WB is behind the store? (i.e. Letter campaign needed?)
  20. 3) What about individual TV station support? Good/bad/indifferent?
  21. What are Turner's plans for the series?
  22. <J_M_S> In reverse order...wow, lotsa questions...TNT plans to run
  23. the show when it's over, and maybe do some movies...the support from
  24. individual stations is variable, some more than others (SF and Portland,
  25. for instance, have always been great).
  26. <J_M_S> When nobody else thought B5 could be done, or that it
  27. *shouldn't* be done, WB let us create this show and bring it to
  28. fruition, and that means a lot.
  29. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  30. <JMSLink1> (Kosh@WB) Will there be another vorlon on the show?
  31. <J_M_S> Another one after Kosh? Yes...his replacement arrived 2
  32. weeks ago in "Walkabout."
  33. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  34. <JMSLink1> (Ivanova@EFnet) <Styphathl> JMS: Will we ever find out
  35. just what happened to Babylon 4 after the last SHADOW war? Did
  36. it survive? is it going to show up in the future to Help the new
  37. war?
  38. <J_M_S> No, it didn't survive much past the last war. It's an Ex-Babylon.
  39. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  40. <JMSLink1> (Ivanova@EFnet) <KdC> To JMS: Are you aware of the
  41. present limited availability of Babylon 5 to Canadian viewers, and
  42. do you know if there are any plans to get Babylon 5 onto more
  43. stations in Canada any time soon?
  44. <J_M_S> This is one area which I confess I don't know as much
  45. about as I likely should. I do know that WB is working hard to
  46. correct the situation, but beyond that I have no details.
  47. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  48. <Othello> Is the original arc for B5 going to be published or made
  49. available at some point? Would really like to see how the stories
  50. differ. -Ranger
  51. <J_M_S> What original arc? Surely you're not suggesting that there
  52. have been CHANGES to the arc? Goodness me, how would that
  53. happen?
  54. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  55. <JMSLink1> (Ivanova@EFnet) Spencer>JMS, do you have a short list
  56. for season 4 titles yet? If so, what are they?
  57. <J_M_S> Season 4 titles: The Hour of the Wolf, Whatever Happened to Mr.
  58. Garibaldi, Into the Fire... Atonement, The Summoning. Others.
  59. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  60. <JMSLink1> (Ivanova@EFnet) <HomerSimp> JMS: I have heard
  61. several women tell me they would quit watching B5 if you ever
  62. killed off Ivanova. Is it really truthful to say that all characters
  63. can die at any time when some characters become so popular the
  64. fans would revolt if they were killed?
  65. <J_M_S> Any character can die. However, if I killed Ivanova,
  66. Claudia would kill me.
  67. <J_M_S> Mutually assured destruction.
  68. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  69. <JMSLink1> (beejmart@WB) When Londo and G'Kar had finished
  70. strangling each other in "World Without End, Part II" -- Vir picks
  71. somethingup from the floor and there is a noise in the
  72. backgroundwhich sounds like a shadow "chitter" -- was/is it?(will it be? <g>)
  73. <J_M_S> No, no shadows there, and what he picked up was the
  74. emperor's insignia, worn by Londo there and by Emperor Turhan
  75. earlier.
  76. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  77. <Lyta> Welcome to IRC JMS! I Love B5. Anyway, I saw Robin Curtis last weekend
  78. and I was wondering if you had plans for the Ambasador Kalika character.
  79. <J_M_S>...nope....
  80. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  81. <JMSLink1> (Tigerlily@WB) Technomag> JMS: Any word on the
  82. Problem with Philadelphia Stations? Your Loyal Philly fans need
  83. there B5.
  84. <J_M_S> NNNNNNNNNext.
  85. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  86. <JMSLink1> (Ivanova@EFnet) <Deirdre> To JMS: What was your part
  87. in the shows "The Real Ghostbusters" & "V"
  88. <J_M_S> On "Ghostbusters" I was story editor and primary writer
  89. for the first syndicated and first ABC season; I left when they
  90. softened up Janine too much....
  91. <J_M_S> On V I was hired by WB to do a 4 hour new miniseries for
  92. that show, but the final was too expensive for syndication (and
  93. cost was what killed it in the first place, it almost singlehandedly
  94. shut down WBTV.)
  95. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  96. <U-Net> Claudia- Six would like to know how the vocal effects for
  97. the Shadows/Vorlons are done.
  98. <J_M_S> We just put microphones on the real Shadows on Vorlons
  99. and...ooops, I wasn't supposed to say that...forget you heard that.
  100. Next.
  101. <U-Net> Claudia- Six would like to know how the vocal effects for
  102. the Shadows/Vorlons are done. <<< Undernet question
  103. <J_M_S> Just answered that. Why are you asking again? Who do
  104. you REALLY work for?
  105. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  106. <Othello> JMS: In "Walkabout," our heros where saved in Star Trek
  107. Style, it was very predictable, almost no casualties on our side other than
  108. Lyta bleeding from the eye, and that was relatively minor considering 3 ships
  109. fighting against 5. The question is will this be more prevalent as B5 moves
  110. along, or are you going to revert back to more of the human condition
  111. instead of save-the-day(moment) type writing style --Bester
  112. <J_M_S> Othello: wait and see.
  113. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  114. <U-Net> Claudia- Didn't the new Vorlon ambassador think people
  115. would recognize the difference in encounter suits?
  116. <J_M_S> Probably, but whoever has just one suit? (well, me, but
  117. that's another story)
  118. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  119. <JMSLink1> (Ivanova@EFnet) <Styphathl> JMS: Will we see any new
  120. SHADOW ships in the future? Such as battle stations or
  121. transports? Cause the way it seems right now.. there are only
  122. enough shadows to poilte the shadow battle cruisers. There must
  123. be ALOT more SHADOWS somewhere... will we ever get to see
  124. them???
  125. <J_M_S> Yes, you will see something on the Shadow side that's so
  126. insidious, so nasty, so cool, that....I can't tell you. But you'll see
  127. it within the first 4 episodes of year 4.
  128. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  129. <JMSLink1> (Ivanova@EFnet) <Spencer> Ivy: Joe, Has there ever
  130. been, or will there wver be, a machine on Z'HaDum similar to the
  131. one on Epsilon 3?
  132. <J_M_S> No, there's no Draal type situation on ZHD.
  133. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  134. <JMSLink1> (Ivanova@EFnet) <D_Quixote> JMS, do you think that
  135. Babylon 5 will have a seriously significant impact on the way
  136. Sci-Fi and regular dramas are written for television in the
  137. future?
  138. <J_M_S> Well, it's certainly our hope that it will change TV, I know
  139. that many producers have begun coming by the stage and asking
  140. hwo we do this, and we show them, and more shows are coming out
  141. using story arcs, so I think so, yes.
  142. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  143. <JMSLink1> (B5Online@WB) Can I have a raise, Joe? ;>
  144. <J_M_S> (yeah, sure)
  145. <J_M_S> That would mean they first have to start PAYING you, Troy.
  146. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  147. <JMSLink1> (beejmart@WB) from LytaA @ WB irc/#babylon5:
  148. <JMSLink1> (beejmart@WB) jms: would you still like to have Patrick
  149. McGoohan appear on B5? If so, is pmg interested, and what kind
  150. of role would you have him play?
  151. <J_M_S> I'd LOVE to have McGoohan on the show, when we have a
  152. proper story for it.
  153. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  154. <JMSLink1> (Ivanova@EFnet) <Styphathl> JMS: will we ever discover
  155. exactly why the Vorlons are playing around with the devolpment of
  156. the other races with the exception of the Centuari?
  157. <J_M_S> Yes, we'll find that out by the end of the season. next
  158. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  159. <JMSLink1> (Ivanova@EFnet) <KdC> JMS: one quick question, would
  160. any of the cast be there with you today?
  161. <J_M_S> Would they? They would've. Are they? No. Could they?
  162. I don't think they allow actors in here. Next.
  163. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  164. <Othello> <Mr_Morden> JMS: I've heard that a Babylon 5 film is
  165. being made. Is this true, and if so, when
  166. <Othello> (in the B5 timeline) will it be set?
  167. <J_M_S> No, no B5 film is currently being made, but TNT is
  168. considering some original B5 movies set during the arc, one being
  169. a prequel.
  170. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  171. <J_M_S> Even SF fans have SOME standards. Not much, granted...
  172. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  173. <JMSLink1> (Ivanova@EFnet) <Strati> QUESTION FOR JMS: What
  174. sagely advice would you give to the novice would-be-authors
  175. online tonight?
  176. <J_M_S> Find what moves you to passion, and write it. No other
  177. advice means a damn.
  178. <JMSLink1> (Ivanova@EFnet) <Strati> Ivy: Question for JMS: What
  179. sagely advice would you give to all the novice would-be-authors
  180. online tonight?
  181. <J_M_S> Get offline and get back to work, that's what I'd suggest.
  182. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  183. <Lyta> series after Babylon5 series ends?
  184. <J_M_S> Lyta: I think part of your message got lost, or else you've
  185. been hanging out with Vorlons.
  186. <Lyta> Is there any plans to continue characters after b5 is over
  187. <J_M_S> No, once the show is over, the characters go with it.
  188. (Meaning the cast have to be nice to me.)
  189. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  190. <JMSLink1> (BluKnight@WB) One of our users is disabled, and he
  191. enjoyed seeing Franklin in a wheelchair after his Walkabout. Do
  192. you have any story plans dealing with disabilities (other than
  193. addiction)?
  194. <J_M_S> Not at the moment, no.
  195. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  196. <JMSLink1> (Ivanova@EFnet) <Styphathl> JMS: Did the SHADOWS
  197. destroy the first 3 stations cuase they looked like B4 or was it
  198. somone else we haven't seen yet???
  199. <J_M_S> No, others destroyed B1-3, some human, some minbari, no
  200. shadow influence.
  201. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  202. <JMSLink1> (beejmart@WB) 1) Will Bureau 13 be making another appearance?
  203. <JMSLink1> (beejmart@WB) 2) Will Zathras ever return?
  204. <JMSLink1> (beejmart@WB) 3) Is Ivanova an even more telepath thah
  205. has originally been made out to seem?
  206. <J_M_S> 1) No, 2) no, 3) no...you're batting a thousand.
  207. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  208. <U-Net> Claudia- Ilya asks why Vorlon technology/ships appears
  209. not to have changed in 1000 years, since the end of War Without
  210. End.
  211. <J_M_S> But they have...look more closely at their ships, and they
  212. ARE different, we designed variations on them.
  213. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  214. <JMSLink1> (Brett@EFnet) JMS: Do you plan to get involved in
  215. Interactive TV/Drama. I.E. a show that has a link to say a web
  216. site where the fans can "take part in the show?"
  217. <J_M_S> Yes, there's something in the works that I hope will change
  218. how TV is done, but it's down the road a bit.
  219. <J_M_S> And it's not a B5 project anyway.
  220. <J_M_S> (just realized that when I log off, and it says jms QUIT babylon5,
  221. it's going to start rumors)
  222. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  223. <JMSLink1> (Ivanova@EFnet) <e99> ivy: question for JMS. Having
  224. studied in a theological seminary, what influenced you into
  225. aethiesm. As an aethiest you are giving quite good presentation of
  226. the "sprititual side " of things in B5.
  227. <J_M_S> What influenced me to atheism was reading the bible twice
  228. cover to cover.
  229. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  230. <JMSLink1> (Ivanova@EFnet) <UMan> JMS: we are seeing much
  231. Shadow activity, but mot much about the WHY behind the activity.
  232. When will we learn more about the Shadows' reasons for their
  233. activities?
  234. <J_M_S> Yup. You'll learn exactly what they're doing, and why
  235. they're doing it, by the tine the last of the 5 held-over 3rd
  236. seasons episodes airs in 3 weeks.
  237. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  238. <U-Net> Claudia- Question for JMS: Will we see more of the Sigma
  239. 957 aliens, or other First Ones?
  240. <J_M_S> U-net: yup.
  241. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  242. <JMSLink1> (Ivanova@EFnet) <Skyfox> Question: "How has the B5
  243. story arc changed since its original conception? e.g. was sinclair
  244. always going to leave the show?"
  245. <J_M_S> Changes? Changes? Where? Good heaens, where does this
  246. come from?
  247. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  248. <JMSLink1> (Ivanova@EFnet) <Styphathl> JMS: Is LightWave the
  249. only 3d rendering program you use or is 3d Studio used a little as
  250. well?
  251. <J_M_S> Insofar as I know -- and my knowledge of this is 3 steps
  252. removed from reality -- we use Lightwave principally for ship and
  253. other animations; if the others are used elsewhre, they don't tell
  254. me because it would scare me, and I'd get confused and fall
  255. down.
  256. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  257. <JMSLink1> (Ivanova@EFnet) <Spencer> Ivanova: JMS: Was Draal
  258. aware of the events going on at ZHaDum in the season finale?
  259. <J_M_S> Yes, if Draal was watching the show that night.
  260. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  261. <JMSLink1> (Tigerlily@WB) Garibaldi@wb > JMS, does the
  262. reference to "We are all Kosh" have any relation to Sebastian's
  263. questioning of Delenn? Would "We are all Kosh" perhaps mean
  264. that all of the Vorlons aren't necessary one Kosh, but share a
  265. single defining outlook on the universe?
  266. <J_M_S> Kosh is more of a description than anything else.
  267. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  268. <Lyta> <Shaktot> Good morning (from Sweden). My two in
  269. <Lyta> one question is. how did you began as scriptwriter and what
  270. <Lyta> was your very first scriptwork? Btw, now the regular, thanks.
  271. <Lyta> Thank you for creating such a wounderful show.
  272. <J_M_S> I began writing for local theaters and community theaters
  273. and the like; it's a good place to cut your teeth.
  274. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  275. <Othello> <Shayla> How does it feel to be the "hero" of so many fans
  276. and how has creating B5 changed your life?
  277. <J_M_S> I'm not a hero, and shouldn't be seen as such; the story is
  278. the star here, and the cast who work so hard at it. I"m doing this
  279. story because I can't NOT write this story. It's not heroism, it's
  280. maintaining my sanity.
  281. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  282. <U-Net> Claudia- Question for JMS: You said that the new Kosh is
  283. younger than the original... how old are Vorlons?
  284. <J_M_S> I'd ask, but it'd be rude, and you know how they are.
  285. <J_M_S> Suffice to say they're REAL old.
  286. <J_M_S> They even remember Winky Dink.
  287. <J_M_S> (And with that he lost the entire audience.)
  288. <Othello> <Tatsu> What is "Winky Dink"?
  289. <J_M_S> What is Winky Dink? How dare you ask that in a public
  290. forum, there are children around, y'know.
  291. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  292. <JMSLink1> (Ivanova@EFnet) <D_Quixote> JMS: It seems as if the
  293. story is less about Good vs. Evil than it is about the way each side
  294. tries for dominance, and ends up merely restoring balance. Would
  295. this be an accurate statement?
  296. <J_M_S> Yes; good and evil is too easy to do. It's about choices,
  297. and responsibility and consequences. Evil rarely looks in a miror
  298. and sees evil. We all have reasons for what we do; we have to be
  299. always aware of our reasons to avoid doing the wrong thing.
  300. <J_M_S> And yes, invariably we tilt back toward a balance...it's the
  301. way of things.
  302. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  303. <JMSLink1> (beejmart@WB) 1) will we *EVER* see tapes of B5 in
  304. the states for purchase?
  305. <JMSLink1> (beejmart@WB) 2) I understand that TNT ( I think ) as
  306. part of the syndication is looking at 2 additonal 2 hour movies as
  307. part of the package, with one being a prequel. Where would the
  308. other movie fall ( between which seasons ... )?
  309. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  310. <JMSLink1> (beejmart@WB) 3) How much has B5 evolved from the
  311. original concept that was started in the 80's ( i.e. such as Kosh's
  312. death... I believe that it was not something that you originally
  313. intended, but it just naturally fell out as part if the creation
  314. process ... ).
  315. <JMSLink1> (beejmart@WB) 4) Will we see the tri-luminary again in B5?
  316. <JMSLink1> (beejmart@WB) 5) Will we see anymore of the
  317. 'creature' that inhabited Sheridan, and went back through the
  318. time rift in sector 14?
  319. <J_M_S> Tapes: not soon, WB is dragging their feet (hello, WB); the
  320. other projects remain to be seen; little things change, and Kosh's
  321. death happened sooner because, well, Kosh insisted.
  322. <J_M_S> Yes, you'll see the Triluminary again, and no, no more of
  323. that creature.
  324. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  325. <Lyta> <MrSpark> Is there going to be any further
  326. <Lyta> development of Psi ability seen in G'Kar or his race?
  327. <J_M_S> It would take generations for that to happen, and the story
  328. only covers a few years, so no.
  329. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  330. <JMSLink1> (Ivanova@EFnet) <Brett> for JMS: Can you tell us about
  331. the funniest moment that ever happened on the set of Babylon 5?
  332. Either some event or a practical joke? I've heard there are some
  333. real jokers in the cast and crew....
  334. <J_M_S> Nothing much...Jerry dropping his pants on Andrea's first
  335. day, the afternoon we convinced Jason his character had been
  336. killed...little stuff. Keeps us going. WE're a mean bunch, but
  337. we're fun.
  338. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  339. <U-Net> Claudia- Question for JMS from Burmese: Will there be
  340. more friction between norms and psi's as a result of their needing
  341. psi's to beat the shadows?
  342. <J_M_S> U-net: yes.
  343. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  344. <J_M_S> ogod it's wb again...i'm going to grow old and die her.
  345. <J_M_S> er, ehre.
  346. <J_M_S> er, here.
  347. <J_M_S> ....nutz.
  348. <J_M_S> first we pay. we pay beads. heap many beads. you type.
  349. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  350. <JMSLink1> ::: (WB) * ^DEJABLUE asks Mr.Straczynski what had
  351. made you get in to Sci-Fi and what were you doing before this??
  352. and what are your plans after b5???(marjluna@warwick.net
  353. <J_M_S> I've always loved SF, it's something I grew up with.
  354. Before this I was into other TV shows, working on Murder, She
  355. WRote and elsewhere. AFter B5...I plan to sleep.
  356. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  357. <JMSLink1> (BluKnight@WB) What do you think of the whole idea of
  358. conventions, especially fan-run ones?
  359. <J_M_S> I love cons, the fan-ones more than the professional ones.
  360. <JMSLink1> (BluKnight@WB) In that case, did you get good words
  361. from Richard (Biggs) about Denver?
  362. <J_M_S> Yes, I got good words from Richard, bu they were "wibble"
  363. and "boxers," so we're still translating.
  364. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  365. <Othello> Why did the new Kosh treat Lyta so roughly?
  366. <J_M_S> Because he's a jerk.
  367. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  368. <JMSLink1> (Ivanova@EFnet) <Styphathl> JMS: in the story Sinclair
  369. became Minbari and this caused Human souls to be born in human
  370. bodies... How can this be??? Wouldn't id be a Minbari becoming
  371. Human causeng that soul switchover? I mean think about it... How
  372. does Delenn turning human cause minbari souls to go back to
  373. Minbari? Its seems a little Backwards to me
  374. <J_M_S> Styph: believe it or not, we'll get into this.
  375. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  376. <JMSLink1> (Ivanova@EFnet) <JumpGate> Are there any plans for
  377. plastic model kits of B5 characters and ships?
  378. <J_M_S> I hear that Monogram/Revell has just licensed models, so
  379. soonish.
  380. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  381. <U-Net> Claudia- Question from Sirilyan: How involved have you
  382. been with the Pabylon Project RPG from Wireframe Productions &
  383. Chameleon Eclectic?
  384. <J_M_S> Fairly involved; I've got the text of their sourcebook with
  385. me, and reading it now...so far it looks great.
  386. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  387. <Lyta> <Mr-Mischief> <mr-mischief> for JMS : are there gonna
  388. <Lyta> be any more shows in future seasons that have bits cut
  389. <Lyta> when they are aired in the uk?
  390. <J_M_S> Lyta: almost certainly. We look forward to it.
  391. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  392. <Othello> <Ivanova> JMS: what books did you read as a kid that gave
  393. you all the crazy ideas for
  394. <Othello> babylon5?
  395. <J_M_S> None, but in terms of SF, I read Bradbury, Clarke, Asimov,
  396. Russell, Heinlein, Ellison...all gave me that sense of wonder that
  397. works in the show.
  398. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  399. <JMSLink1> (Ivanova@EFnet) JMS: Delenn changes half from
  400. Minbari to Human, and Sinclair from Human to Minbari, Doesn't
  401. this imply that there must be another half minbari to human change
  402. to even up the soul exchange?
  403. <J_M_S> Well, Sinclair looked minbari from the outside, but parts
  404. were still very human, so there was one before th is.
  405. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  406. <U-Net> Claudia- Question for JMS: What do you think it would
  407. take to get Claudia Christian to an east coast Ren Faire? ;-)
  408. <J_M_S> Depends on how much ale you've got handy.
  409. <Alpha-1> I got a whole case of ale here ;)
  410. <J_M_S> We can get her looped and toss her into a plane.
  411. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  412. <JMSLink1> (beejmart@WB) 1) How about the B5 US releases on
  413. Laserdisc -- widescreen of course!!!
  414. <J_M_S> WB keeps saying there's no market for tapes/disks...even
  415. though the tapes are regularly #1-2 on the UK retail charts. Go
  416. figure.
  417. <J_M_S> The hostage negotiations in Iran got a faster release than
  418. our tapes.
  419. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  420. <JMSLink1> (Ivanova@EFnet) <Stilgar> JMS- In the first war, did
  421. any "First Ones" fight on the side of the shadows? if so, are they
  422. expected to return and fight once more, or will the Shadows only
  423. recruit new allies, as they have done so far?
  424. <J_M_S> One or two, yes, but they're gone now. Good riddance.
  425. The carpet's a mess.
  426. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  427. <Othello> <Mollari> Will the Earth Alliance or Rebels get involved in
  428. the war against the shadows ?
  429. <J_M_S> Othello: nope.
  430. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  431. <JMSLink1> (Ivanova@EFnet) <HomerSimp> why Psi Corps hasn't
  432. developed a blood test for the telepathy gene since they knew
  433. enough to develop Dust?
  434. <J_M_S> The genes indicate potential, yes, but not the reality, so
  435. it's more problem than its' worth.
  436. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  437. <JMSLink1> (beejmart@WB) 1) Is Sheridan carrying Kosh's essence
  438. and can it be reached by another... ie; Lyta or the new Vorlon?
  439. <JMSLink1> (beejmart@WB) 2) Are the Forces of Darkness growing,
  440. ie; are other races joining the Shadows to fight the Forces of Light?
  441. <JMSLink1> (beejmart@WB) 3) Will we see Bester fight the
  442. Shadows?
  443. <J_M_S> WB: in theory...we'l see. And yes, the dark forces are
  444. growing, in ways we'll have to see a bit later.
  445. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  446. <JMSLink1> (Ivanova@EFnet) <drakon> JMS: About Barbie Costumes,
  447. do you know anything about fan made costumes? did the maker get
  448. spanked by WB legal?
  449. <J_M_S> .....WHAT B5 barbie costumes? This is the first I've heard
  450. of it. No, they're not licensed. Now that I know, we smash.
  451. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  452. <Othello> <Lenann> Have we seen most of the races included in the
  453. Arc, or is there some Major player waiting out there yet to be
  454. discovered?
  455. <J_M_S> Othello: not as such, no.
  456. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  457. <JMSLink1> (Ivanova@EFnet) <Styphathl> JMS: Who is more
  458. advanced... the SHADOWS or the Vorlons. Cause when the Vorlons
  459. attacked the SHADOWS it took a dozen of them to kill one... does
  460. this mean the Vorlons are not as strong as the SHADOWS or were
  461. they holding back? Also why haven't the Vorlons hepled protect
  462. B5?
  463. <J_M_S> The Vorlons interests may not be quite the same as ours...as
  464. we'll find out in season 4. The question is predicated on them
  465. wanting to be helpful as we would need them to be. They may be
  466. other.
  467. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  468. <Othello> <Ranger> Have you been to Katana's Zocalo web site?
  469. <J_M_S> Othello: no.
  470. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  471. <JMSLink1> (Ivanova@EFnet) <Merlyn> JMS: As far as souls being a
  472. non-localized ohenomenon, are they non-localized in time as well?
  473. Is that why the Soulhunter wanted Delenn's soul so badly? Was it
  474. 1/2 human even then?
  475. <J_M_S> The nonlocalization of a soul is something beyond human
  476. comprehension...but no, her soul was then not half human...though
  477. there *is* something about Delenn's background in this area you
  478. don't know yet, and will find out soon.
  479. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  480. <U-Net> Claudia- Question for JMS: Was it an accident or did you
  481. do on purpose that the Centauri dress, act and talk like humans,
  482. and especially Russians in the 19th century?
  483. <J_M_S> There's a lot of influence in the Centauri: russian, german,
  484. prussian, early Roman...lots of stuff. I wouldn't tag it down to
  485. one thing.
  486. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  487. <JMSLink1> (Ivanova@EFnet) <Styphathl> JMS: was the dream with
  488. Sheridan in a Psi Cops uniform signifying his relationship to
  489. bester or does it mean he will get the Corp to join the Army of
  490. Light? Also why was he wearing the Uniform instead of just seeing
  491. a image of Bester?
  492. <J_M_S> That is answered in just 2 more weeks, and I'd rather let
  493. that come out in the show than here.
  494. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  495. JMSLink1> (Tigerlily@WB) <LilWolf @WB> Does anyone know
  496. exactly how strong Ivanova's telepathic powers are? Are they
  497. strong enough for her to play any significant role in fighting the
  498. shadow ships?
  499. <J_M_S> No, her skills aren't that enhanced.
  500. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  501. <JMSLink1> (Ivanova@EFnet) <Stilgar> JMS- Are we going to see any
  502. interference or action from the other planets (Orion 7 and
  503. Proxima 3) who broke away with Babylon5?
  504. <J_M_S> Stilgar: yes, in time.
  505. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  506. <JMSLink1> (Ivanova@EFnet) Spencer> JMS: Does Delenn carry in
  507. her a part of a Vorlon in a similar way to Sheridan?
  508. <J_M_S> Spencer: no.
  509. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  510. <JMSLink1> (Ivanova@EFnet) <HomerSimp> JMS: B5 is
  511. understandably popular with many in the military. But is it
  512. realistic to show Sheridan commanding a ship for which he has had
  513. no training or preparation for? Sheridan was shown actively
  514. training his pilots to fight the Centauri in FoN.
  515. <J_M_S> Well, bear in mind that Sheridan started as a fighter pilot
  516. and worked his way up to his current position. That helps.
  517. (That's my story and I'm sticking to it.)
  518. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  519. <JMSLink1> (Ivanova@EFnet) * ^DEJABLUE asks JMS ....... do you
  520. ever use these chat programs to just go on and chat and not tell
  521. them who you are and if you do .do you like them??????
  522. <J_M_S> Dejablue: no, I think that'd be unfair.
  523. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  524. <JMSLink1> (beejmart@WB) from Spike @ WB irc/#babylon5:
  525. <JMSLink1> (beejmart@WB) 1) Do you have storylines under
  526. development past the current 5 year arc?
  527. <JMSLink1> (beejmart@WB) 3) Do you get greater creative freedom
  528. under PTEN (or what's left of PTEN) than he would under a major
  529. network(ABC, NBC, etc)? Would you make compromises to the
  530. show to get a shot at airing Babylon 5 on one of the major networks?
  531. <JMSLink1> (beejmart@WB) 4) Is there grounds for some Oliver
  532. Stone-like conspiracy theory in that both of the regular B-5
  533. commanders have had the same initials as theircreator: JS? Do
  534. you see parts of yourself in their characterizations?
  535. <J_M_S> There's always been a sequel possibility...so yes, but we'll
  536. see.
  537. <J_M_S> I get a LOT more freedom on PTEN than I would get on
  538. ANY network, and I'm appropriately grateful. (Just...ignore all
  539. that other stuff I said, WB...no, really...I'll go back to washing
  540. your car tomorrow).
  541. <J_M_S> Re: initials...good heavens, I'd never noticed that
  542. before...imagine that.
  543. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  544. <JMSLink1> (Ivanova@EFnet) <Styphathl> JMS: Did the SHADOWS
  545. know about the battle cruisers on Mars and Gynamyde or did they
  546. forget about them from the last war? Also what are the chances of
  547. a SHADOW Battle Cruiser being burried under EarthDome?
  548. <J_M_S> They were seeded on Mars and elsewhere to hide them.
  549. MOre on this later in the show.
  550. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  551. <Othello> <Shayla> How difficult was it to develop the discipline
  552. needed to become a PAID writer?
  553. <J_M_S> Othello: you just do it; you start the discipline as an
  554. UNpaid writer. You don't write because you want to, or for the
  555. money, or for any reason other than that you can't NOT write.
  556. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  557. <Othello> <Tatsu> When do we find out exactly what Vorlons are (or
  558. did I miss somehing somewhere)?
  559. <J_M_S> (That'll teach you to ask what the Vorlons are REALLY...you
  560. really think they'd let me answer that? HAH!"
  561. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  562. <Othello> <Ranger> Any chance of 1. The correct spelling of najas
  563. duvaneal? and 2. What it means
  564. <Othello> when translated from Minbari to English? (from the scene
  565. where Delenn makes it rain for Sheridan).
  566. <J_M_S> Ranger: alas, my Earth/Minbari dictionary is at home.
  567. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  568. <Othello> <Mr_Morden> JMS: Will B5 DEFINITELY be limited to 5
  569. seasons?
  570. <J_M_S> (My, this is rather chaotic. Like a Centauri birthday
  571. party, but without the tentacles and whipped cream.)
  572. <J_M_S> Now I can tell you the REAL truth...
  573. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  574. <U-Net> ToeKnee Describe what it was like seeing the 5 year story
  575. arc at once ... how do you feel?
  576. <J_M_S> It's a dream cone true, literally...it fills me with immense
  577. pride. The job of the writer is to stock the shelves so when he's
  578. gone, the store stays open. The shelves are well stocked now.
  579. It's wonderful.
  580. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  581. <Othello> <Pretender> If when Sinclari changed to a Minbari and
  582. then Minbari souls started being born in Human souls, does that
  583. mean because Delenn changed that Human souls will be born in
  584. Minbari's, or will they cancle out? Or did it happen the first time
  585. because Sinclair was traveling through time?
  586. <J_M_S> It will, in theory, cancel out. But something more has to be
  587. done.
  588. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  589. <JMSLink1> (B5Online@WB) Joe.. we never heard boxers or briefs.
  590. Must have been a conspiracy.
  591. <J_M_S> sure, WB. Well, you can ask.
  592. <J_M_S> who, me?
  593. <J_M_S> Can't remember...justa minute...I can't do this and type at the same
  594. time.
  595. <J_M_S> briefs
  596. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  597. <Othello> <Fury161> will the scripts ever be available for
  598. publication?
  599. <J_M_S> and the first 4 are the best we've done so far. (BTW,
  600. someone asked about scriptwriting...my Complete Book of
  601. Scriptwriting in new and expanded form just this week came out
  602. from Writer's Digest Books)
  603. <J_M_S> End of commercial.
  604. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  605. <Othello> <Bird> (REPOST) JMS: Where are you scriptwise in season
  606. 4 and production-wise in S4?
  607. <J_M_S> We're just finishing shooting #5, we have 4 edited, and 2
  608. mixed and delivered; they're terrific. Script #9 was just turned
  609. in....
  610. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  611. <JMSLink1> (Ivanova@EFnet) <B5Jim> JMS, What do you think of the
  612. series 2 B5 cards?
  613. <J_M_S> I've seen virtually all of the new cards, and they're
  614. *dynamite*, just gorgeous. I'd say a 500% improvement over set
  615. one. I heartly recommend them.
  616. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  617. <Othello> <Radix> Did Melissa Gilbert ask to be on Babylon 5 or was
  618. it all Bruce's idea?
  619. <J_M_S> (Actually, I thunk up using Melissa...just thought it was a
  620. good idea.)
  621. <JMSLink1> (beejmart@WB) WOW you thought up Melissa.. do her
  622. parents know?
  623. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  624. <J_M_S> Foundation has gone on to other projects; the CGI has now
  625. been taken in-house.
  626. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  627. <JMSLink1> (Ivanova@EFnet) <Skyfox> Question: "JMS, Do you
  628. enjoy torturing the cast? e.g. Ivanovas sex scene, BOOM SHAK
  629. ALAKA...etc.."
  630. <J_M_S> The cast get nervous sometimes because I listen, and toss
  631. things in they didn't know I heard...like Jerry's attitude on
  632. capital punishment is the same as Garibaldi's. It's a good way to
  633. unnerve them.
  634. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  635. <JMSLink1> (Ivanova@EFnet) <Lyta> jms: any b5 figures are going to
  636. be released?
  637. <J_M_S> No figurines are set yet that I know of...but I've just seen
  638. the first Hamilton Collector's PLate, and it's *nifty* in the
  639. extreme. (Suddenly this has turned into a commercial.)
  640. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  641. <JMSLink1> (beejmart@WB) from AndraX @ WB irc/#babylon5:
  642. What was the name of the hymn you wrote?
  643. <J_M_S> I didn't write the hymn, it's an old gospel song.
  644. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  645. <Othello> <Valen> Who is going to do the new intro?
  646. <J_M_S> Who's going to do the new intro? Can't say.
  647. <J_M_S> Well, can...just won't.
  648. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  649. <JMSLink1> (Ivanova@EFnet) JMS - Will there be a series of
  650. collector plates for b5? (including Ivanova :))
  651. <J_M_S> Yes, the plates have all our major characters on them.
  652. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  653. <JMSLink1> (Ivanova@EFnet) <chanlon> JMS:One question. What did
  654. the Vorlons answer when someone asked them, "What do you want?"
  655. <J_M_S> The vorlons wouldn't be asked that. The shadows know
  656. what they want.
  657. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  658. <J_M_S> WB: yes. Chris wants to put the walkabout songs on CD,
  659. but I"m not sure if I want to do that, because I like the CDs being
  660. all instrumental. We're discussing it.
  661. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  662. <JMSLink1> (Ivanova@EFnet) * JMSisGOD begs even more to ask the
  663. question about who is writing Season 4
  664. <J_M_S> So far the first 9 scripts are jms scripts.
  665. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  666. <JMSLink1> (B5Online@WB) Any news about an enhanced CD? or
  667. can't say? ;>
  668. <J_M_S> Nothing's set yet.
  669. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  670. <JMSLink1> (beejmart@WB) from DomesticB@ WB irc/#babylon5:
  671. Will the scripts ever be available in a novelized format?
  672. <J_M_S> No immediate plans for it.
  673. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  674. <JMSLink1> (Ivanova@EFnet) <Morganna> JMS: this collectors plate?
  675. ...where will we be able to buy it from? ..WB shops?
  676. <J_M_S> Not from WB, no, but likely via ads and direct from
  677. Hamilton's.
  678. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  679. <JMSLink1> (Tigerlily@WB) Hacker> Mr. Straczynski: First of all, I
  680. would like to say how much I have enjoyed Babylon 5 for the last
  681. few years. My question is what made you think of creating Babylon
  682. 5, what was your inspiration?
  683. <J_M_S> It's hard to point to any one inspiration for B5...I wanted
  684. to do a saga, I wanted to do a space station story, and one day I
  685. realized that they were both the same story.
  686. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  687. <JMSLink1> (Ivanova@EFnet) <Styphathl> JMS: What are the chances
  688. of a Human and a Minbari being able to concive. Or is B5 going to
  689. pull a Star Trek and allow genetic crossovers?
  690. <J_M_S> No two difference species can mate without
  691. *considerable* genetic manipulation. It can't be done as on ST.
  692. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  693. <Lyta> Valen> May i please ask if there will be another series in the
  694. b5 universe since it is -i now
  695. <J_M_S> Lyta: WB has asked to see a treatment for a sequel; I
  696. wrote one; they like it, but we'll have to see.
  697. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  698. <JMSLink1> (beejmart@WB) 1. Any word on the status of future B5 comics?
  699. <JMSLink1> (beejmart@WB) 3. Will we ever learn who specifically
  700. conceived of the Babylon project?
  701. <JMSLink1> (beejmart@WB) 4. And lastly (it never hurts to ask)
  702. can I have a job?
  703. <J_M_S> Answered the comics question earlier; yes, later this
  704. year/spring; (you went from 1 to 3, which confirms you work for
  705. WB)...and 3, eventually, and 4...you can have my job, but you'll
  706. have to lose all your hair first.
  707. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  708. <Othello> JMS can you describe how the Arc was written out?
  709. <J_M_S> The arc is written (was written) over a couple of years in
  710. bits and pieces, it's now in a 300 page file triple-encrypted in my
  711. computer.
  712. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  713. <JMSLink1> (ToeKnee@Undernet) Describe what it was like seeing
  714. the 5 year story arc at once ... how do you feel?
  715. <J_M_S> It was quite stunning to see the whole story at once...it just
  716. flashed into my brain. Someone said of poems once that he didn't
  717. write poems, he discovered them, they were always there, waiting
  718. for someont to write them. I think that may apply here.l)
  719. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  720. <JMSLink1> (Ivanova@EFnet) <_Codex> JMS: how long it took to
  721. render one frame in "shadow dancing" fighting scenes? How many
  722. ships there were in the fight? Was that biggest fight in the story?
  723. <J_M_S> Don't nkow about rendering times; but overall our biggest
  724. CGI episode in our history will be in the first 6 episodes. It's a
  725. corker.
  726. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  727. <JMSLink1> (Ivanova@EFnet) <Sharpe> JMS: Will there be any
  728. ground battles coming up, or is everything going to be space
  729. based?
  730. <J_M_S> Space for now, ground later.
  731. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  732. <JMSLink1> (Ivanova@EFnet) JMS - will Melissa Gilbert be in any
  733. episodes in Season 4 ?
  734. <J_M_S> Nopers.
  735. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  736. <JMSLink1> (Claudia-@Undernet) JMS: What is the breakdown of
  737. telepath levels? Specifically, what percentage of human telepaths
  738. are P12?
  739. <J_M_S> That's a way too complicated question for this forum, alas.
  740. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  741. <JMSLink1> (Ivanova@EFnet) <Spencer> IJMS: Would you die for
  742. The One? (after writing the rest of the show, of course)
  743. <J_M_S> I wouldn't go get pizza for the one. That ain't my job.
  744. I'm just the writer.
  745. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  746. <Othello> <]{osh> JMS: Are any Babylon 5 tech books going to be
  747. made? If so, when? Are their examples of the Story arc in your
  748. Book.
  749. <J_M_S> The UK is coming out with a tech manual from Boxtree.
  750. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  751. <JMSLink1> (Tigerlily@WB) <TwoKnives@wb> Who is YOUR favorite
