  17. Plot Points
  18. * With the help of a deep scan by Lyta, who is able to break past
  19. blocks put in place by P12 telepaths, Garibaldi has convinced
  20. Franklin and the others that Bester manipulated him into betraying
  21. his fellow officers.
  22. * Garibaldi, Franklin, and Lyta have freed Sheridan.
  23. * Londo and G'Kar have convinced the League of Non-Aligned Worlds to
  24. join the fight against Clark and help Sheridan, who came to their
  25. aid against the Shadows. Sheridan's fleet now contains Narn and
  26. Centauri warships, among others.
  27. * Not all the so-called defectors to the rebel fleet have really
  28. betrayed Earth; there are some spies who have been feeding
  29. information about fleet movement back to Earth.
  30. * Earth has been adapting Shadow technology for use in its own
  31. ships. The resulting vessels are capable of putting up a strong
  32. fight against White Star-class ships.
  33. * Ivanova was mortally injured during a clash with a fleet of
  34. Shadow-enhanced Earth ships. Minbari physicians estimate she has
  35. no more than a week left.
  36. * At Ivanova's request, Sheridan has assumed command of the
  37. Agamemnon once again.
  38. Unanswered Questions
  39. * What other Shadow technology has Earth adapted?
  40. * What impact has Sheridan's interrogation had on his psyche?
  41. * How badly was the White Star fleet damaged by the battle?
  42. * Did Garibaldi and the others leave Mars with Sheridan?
  43. Analysis
  44. * G'Kar's feeling of debt to Sheridan is obvious: Sheridan gave him
  45. sanctuary ([18]"The Long, Twilight Struggle") and aided the Narn
  46. during their war with the Centauri ([19]"Acts of Sacrifice" and
  47. [20]"The Fall of Night," among others.) It's less clear why Londo
  48. would be willing to put his people on the line to the same extent.
  49. Londo, at least from his perspective, took care of the Centauri
  50. Republic's Shadow "problem" on his own, without Sheridan's
  51. intervention ([21]"Into the Fire.") While he may since have
  52. learned of Sheridan's role in sparing Centauri Prime from
  53. destruction by the Vorlon planet-killer, he never worked closely
  54. with Sheridan as G'Kar did.
  55. One possibility is that Londo feels he has to repay Sheridan for
  56. telling him of the approach of the Vorlons ([22]"Falling Toward
  57. Apotheosis.") Londo did tell Sheridan he owed him a favor in
  58. return.
  59. Or it may be a simple matter of redemption: Londo certainly
  60. realizes that he helped the Shadows, and he may feel he needs to
  61. make up for his past misdeeds. In [23]"No Surrender, No Retreat,"
  62. Londo told G'Kar that he wanted to help the humans because they'd
  63. been friends, and he'd been ignoring his friends too long.
  64. * G'Kar praised humanity as a bridge that has allowed the other
  65. races to work together. That's the same argument Londo made to him
  66. in [24]"No Surrender, No Retreat." Delenn has expressed the same
  67. sentiment as well, e.g. in [25]"And Now For a Word" with her
  68. closing remark about humans building communities.
  69. * The League's unanimous vote ran counter to Sheridan's request that
  70. they stay out of Earth's civil war ([26]"No Surrender, No
  71. Retreat.") Upon his return, however, he didn't seem to object to
  72. the presence of the alien vessels; has he changed his mind about
  73. the need to credibly deny that his campaign is due to alien
  74. influence?
  75. * Just how powerful is Lyta? She has set off planetary defense
  76. systems from light-years away ([27]"Epiphanies,") is able to
  77. easily slide past defenses put in place by the Psi Corps' most
  78. talented members, and can project detailed memories into the minds
  79. of others. There must be limits to her ability; Kosh was able to
  80. block her out ([28]"Falling Toward Apotheosis.") But she appears
  81. to be light-years ahead of any other human telepath since Jason
  82. Ironheart ([29]"Mind War.")
  83. * Lyta appeared startled when Garibaldi mentioned the conspiracy
  84. against the Psi Corps. Did she pull the details out of his mind,
  85. and if so, is the knowledge useful to her in any way?
  86. * Why did Number One believe the images Lyta sent to her? Given
  87. Number One's distrust of telepaths, wouldn't she suspect that Lyta
  88. was feeding her fictitious images? Of course, it's possible she
  89. believed it because Lyta also transmitted the belief that the
  90. images were legitimate.
  91. On the other hand, it's strange that Number One's people were also
  92. convinced immediately; given the resistance's innate distrust of
  93. telepaths, why weren't they suspicious of her immediate reversal
  94. of attitude after Lyta apparently did something to her mind?
  95. * How much does Ivanova know about Marcus' feelings for her? When he
  96. walked into the sleeping chamber, he didn't think she suspected --
  97. hence his "You will never know" comment -- but clearly she
  98. suspects _something_ now that she knows what he said to her
  99. earlier ([30]"Shadow Dancing.")
  100. * How was Earth able to adapt Shadow technology so quickly, given
  101. that it's millions of years more advanced and apparently has a
  102. completely dissimilar basis (living matter as opposed to steel and
  103. wires?) Did Clark's people, or maybe the Psi Corps, receive
  104. technical assistance from the Shadows at some point?
  105. Earth's weapons researchers weren't completely new to the concept
  106. of living weapons; the confiscated Ikarran artifact in
  107. [31]"Infection" was in their hands for nearly four years. It's
  108. possible that studying that artifact, which presumably was a less
  109. advanced form of organic technology than that used by the Shadows,
  110. gave them the context they needed to begin to understand Shadow
  111. artifacts. The ships on Mars and Ganymede ([32]"Messages from
  112. Earth") would have provided chances for experimentation, if brief
  113. ones.
  114. * Was Sheridan's father freed too, or is he still being held? The
  115. interrogator implied that Clark's forces still had him. Even
  116. without Garibaldi's help, Sheridan's father can presumably still
  117. be used as leverage against Sheridan.
  118. * Sheridan was in a rather confused mental state when he was
  119. rescued. Will his interrogation have any lasting effect on his
  120. psyche? Many people would be scarred for life from such an
  121. experience. On the other hand, Sheridan has already been through a
  122. rough time -- death -- and after that, the rest may seem minor in
  123. comparison.
  124. * Why did Ivanova ask Sheridan to lead the final battle from the
  125. bridge of the Agamemnon? Symbolism, most likely, since she
  126. expressed concern about it earlier. But clearly, he'd be safer on
  127. the bridge of one of the White Star ships, Ivanova's injury
  128. notwithstanding. She must be aware that her request puts the
  129. integrity of the fleet -- which depends on Sheridan himself as a
  130. symbol, every bit as much as it depends on the participation of
  131. Earth ships -- in greater jeopardy.
  132. The symbolism aspect is the most likely explanation; a fleet led
  133. by an Earth warship will be harder for Clark to explain away as
  134. mere alien interference.
  135. It's also possible, given the discovery that not all the defecting
  136. ships are loyal to Sheridan, that Ivanova wanted Sheridan on the
  137. bridge of the Agamemnon to ensure that its captain couldn't betray
  138. the rebel cause.
  139. * Sheridan's use of the Agamemnon after Ivanova's fall has symbolic
  140. meaning on another level: Agamemnon was the commander of the Greek
  141. forces during the Trojan War, and he sacrificed his daughter
  142. Iphigenia to ensure fair wind for his ships. Ivanova, while
  143. obviously not Sheridan's daughter, sacrificed herself to ensure
  144. that the fleet would make it to Mars.
  145. In Euripides' version of the Greek myth, Iphigenia was switched
  146. with a hind (a deer) at the last minute by Artemis, who among
  147. other things was the goddess of virgins. Iphigenia lived
  148. thereafter in a distant country as the high priestess in one of
  149. Artemis' temples. The [33]"Endgame" page has more on that.
  150. * Garibaldi doesn't have very good luck with his back, between the
  151. knifing in this episode and the gunshot in [34]"Chrysalis." An
  152. additional irony is that he was stabbed in the back while helping
  153. rescue Sheridan, who he stabbed in the back in a metaphorical
  154. sense.
  155. Notes
  156. * Earthforce is expanding the underground Mars tunnel system,
  157. leading to instability in the existing tunnels.
  158. * Ivanova has eidetic memory (photographic memory or perfect recall,
  159. as it's more commonly known.)
  160. * The VR machine used to interrogate Sheridan is similar to the
  161. machine used to interrogate Sinclair in [35]"And the Sky Full of
  162. Stars."
  163. * After Franklin finishes sewing up Garibaldi's wound, the team
  164. proceeds down the tunnel. Part of a discarded newspaper is visible
  165. in the background, including the headline "TIAGO" and "TED" on the
  166. next line. The headline is probably "Santiago Elected," the same
  167. newspaper headline visible in [36]"Grey 17 Is Missing."
  168. * The Damocles, which Ivanova's fleet fought at the beginning of the
  169. episode, is named after a figure in Greek mythology. As told by
  170. Cicero, Damocles was a courtier under Dionysius of Syracuse, who
  171. had risen to power by violence. He envied what he imagined to be
  172. his ruler's pampered and carefree life, so Dionysius decided to
  173. let Damocles experience what his life was really like. In the
  174. midst of a sumptuous banquet, Damocles discovered that a sword was
  175. suspended by a horsehair over his head, ready to drop at any
  176. moment. Dionysius said he felt the same anxiety every day,
  177. surrounded by enemies waiting to take his life at the first sign
  178. of weakness.
  179. * The title most likely refers to the mantra recited by Delenn and
  180. others upon entering the Grey Council: "I am Grey. I stand between
  181. the candle and the star. We are Grey. We stand between the
  182. darkness and the light." ([37]"Babylon Squared," among others.) It
  183. may also refer to a transition from darkness to light; Sheridan's
  184. return certainly qualifies.
  185. jms speaks
  186. * It's a nice, quiet little episode.
  187. Well, at least, in comparison to what's coming....
  188. * _Was this episode filmed after Claudia Christian decided to leave?_
  189. Negative. We'd finished all S4 shooting at the time this occured.
  190. _Were new scenes shot and edited in?_
  191. Negative.
  192. * _Was there a scene missing between Sheridan shooting the guard and
  193. his arrival on the Minbari ship?_
  194. Yes, there was a small scene that got cut for time.
  195. Good catch.
  196. * The Garibaldi material through the map sequence with Number One
  197. was originally in "Intersections." It got shunted over to 419 when
  198. 418 ran 7-8 minutes long, and 419 ran 8 minutes short.
  199. * _During the interrogation, the female interrogator said, "Put a
  200. bullet in his head." But Earth uses PPGs now, not bullets._
  201. Nope. We've established (in Grey 17 is Missing, for instance) that
  202. guns are still used on Earth and elsewhere; but in a space
  203. station, you don't want a slug-thrower because it tends to a)
  204. ricochet a lot off metal walls, or b) cut through something vital
  205. that would breach the hull potentially.
  206. * _About Ivanova's eidetic memory_
  207. She's a latent telepath. About a P1. As has been established on
  208. the show in the past. That gives her a slight edge in many areas.
  209. Also, an eidetic memory does not equal facility with language. I
  210. have a somewhat eidetic memory. I can usually remember visuals and
  211. things said to me with extreme clarity. (Unless I'm in convention
  212. mode at the time, at which point all bets are off.) But I have a
  213. real problem with learning languages, which involves not just
  214. memorization, but *translation,* which is a skill, a knack that
  215. some others have and some don't. (Spanish rolled off me, but for
  216. some reason I have a knack for German, though my vocabulary's gone
  217. all to hell.)
  218. * "These new EA ships with Shadow tech...Are they susceptible to
  219. telepaths like the shadow vessels were?"
  220. Negative...they don't have living beings as CPUs, they're still
  221. working at adapting the basic tech, the other stuff is still a bit
  222. advanced.
  223. "By the way, the EA adaptation to the shadow tech is accurately
  224. done. Keep the basic Omega design and modify where needed."
  225. Got it in one.
  226. * The Advanced destroyer group was still somewhat in the works when
  227. they hauled it out to go after the fleet. They'd been expecting
  228. mainly to go after other Earth ships (as was noted in the
  229. episode), and didn't count on exclusively being confronted by
  230. Whitestars. Still, there were a lot of them here, and they did a
  231. lot of damage by sheer force of numbers.
  232. Corwin would be running the station in everyone's absence.
  233. * _About Ivanova's speech_
  234. Yeah, it was a bit over the top, deliberately so.
  235. I put it in the category of a boxer who's going up against an
  236. opponent who may be well matched...and wants to psych the other
  237. person out.
  238. If you look at "Give me liberty or give me death!" or similar
  239. statements, made to rally support or make a point, they're
  240. generally bigger than life, a bit over the top. That's so we can
  241. know where the top is so we can climb up there ourselves.
  242. * "If we want to be logical here, it really seems improbable that a
  243. White Star could run into a piece of debris. Ok, the pilot
  244. (Marcus) wasn't paying attention, they were at high speeds and
  245. visability was poor."
  246. Well, if you want to go back and listen to what's being said in
  247. the episode, Marcus calls out that the navigational system was
  248. damaged, and they were trying to repair when the big chunk of
  249. debris hit them. They couldn't get out of the way for that reason.
  250. * Some have complained about the rescue, arguing that they wanted to
  251. see a big battle. (To which answer #1 is wait 7 days.) They wanted
  252. to see the fleet smack Mars and free him in a big battle.
  253. Well, if you do that, you can kiss goodbye any chance of the fleet
  254. then doing what it's SUPPOSED to be doing, which is the liberation
  255. of Earth. While they're tied up and planetbound (on one side) at
  256. Mars, Earth swoops in and knocks them out. You also lose any
  257. possible aspect of surprise.
  258. It *had* to be done quickly, through the back door, rather than
  259. the fleet that some might have been expecting, so it'd look like a
  260. Resistance job, not a Fleet job.
  261. * "Why were there no cameras monitoring Sheridan?"
  262. Torturers rarely videotape their work, thus assuring that it can
  263. never be used against them should things not go their way all the
  264. time. This is kinda pro forma in South America, for instance.
